TIPS & OBSERVATIONS FROM OUR USERS:

•Getting Started or Starting Over.
•Some people find it easier to set small attainable goals at the beginning to help boost confidence.
•If you have been drinking daily the first days will be some of the hardest and drinking again will feel like a cure but it delays the relief that only time can provide.
•There will always be a reason to delay the start/restart of your journey.
•For those ready to commit to being alcohol-free permanently, the videos on YouTube by Craig Beck will help. He also has a program you can join.
•You may experience mood swings and anxiety during your first two weeks. It is suggested you try and focus on the benefits of your goal.
•Cravings are said to last only 6 minutes, so find something to distract you like arming yourself with alternatives: tea, mock-tails, activities, etc.
•You may find that filling the time you drink with other activities like exercise or hobbies can be a helpful distraction.
•If you find them tempting try and avoid events/outings that will have drinking for a time.
•Don't let pride or shame keep you from asking for the help you need.
•Sometimes talking it out or posting your thoughts/feelings/struggles may help you work things out for yourself.
•It is okay that you don't always have all the answers.
•Some days will be easier than others.
•You may have initial/increased sugar cravings.
•You should never take a day that you have lived up to your goals for granted.
•Celebrate the smaller victories too. Less alcohol is still less alcohol even if your goal was zero at that moment.
•Once you begin sticking to your goals for one day to many days you should believe you are capable of the same and more because you are.
•Failure is not giving in and drinking. Failure is to stop trying to accomplish your goals.

Life with Less Alcohol:

•It can be helpful to educate yourself with books and web research (Some suggested books and links listed below).
•There is no benefit to comparing yourself to others because this is a personal journey.
•You may often feel conflicted. You will know that there are numerous real benefits to sticking to your goal while at the same time think that alcohol is an important part of stress relief, relaxation, celebration, etc.
•You may feel punished by not drinking or drinking less but that feeling usually fades with time.
•Sometimes drinking less or quitting will strain friendships that centered around alcohol.
•Having a list of reasons to stick to your goals handy for yourself can be helpful. Some lists have included remembering how bad it feels to have a hangover, excess/unwanted calories, having a racing heart during the night, sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression.
•It is a good idea to have a plan for how you might deal with various tempting scenarios before engaging in a social situation.
•Self-Reflection is an important part of the journey. Once we figure out why we drink we can hopefully use that information to form new habits and make better and more mindful decisions.
•Sometimes doing something nice for yourself like a little reward for a success makes the journey easier.
•You will see many helpful suggestions and ideas that work for some people. However, finding what tactics work for you may involve some trial and error.
•It is not uncommon for certain activities that were once combined with alcohol to trigger temptation. Many have said that outdoor activities in warmer weather made alcohol very tempting.
•Many that have spent time with no alcohol after drinking again realized that it doesn't enhance experiences like they once believed it did. Some have said they no longer like the taste.
•Don't forget how sticking to your goal has made your life better and remember it to motivate you again if you fall off your path.
•If you begin drinking daily again whether planned like a vacation or unplanned you may once again face a struggle to get it under control.
•For some people it is easier to not drink than it is to moderate drinking. Others have found moderating impossible.

How to Be Kind to "Tomorrow You":

•Instead of lumbering with guilt, headaches, and poor nutrition hangovers in the morning, Think of think how nice it would be not to feel that way tomorrow.
•Worry about "me" and don't let "tomorrow Me" feel awful.
•Instead of thinking alcohol is something nice to have *now*, think of *NOT drinking* as something nice we can do for the person we are when we awaken in the morning.
•Do you bank calories for a festive occasion? (Handy tactic) We can bank a good mood for when we wake up.
•We need to have sympathy for "Tomorrow You" and be kind to her/him.
•Don't look at a day without alcohol as a punishment for being bad or having no willpower.
•Not drinking is a lovely, sympathetic gesture towards the person we are now, and whom we will wake up as.
•You’d be kind to a stranger. Be kind to "Tomorrow You".

Three weeks ago I decided that nightly wines were not my friend, they did not bring me joy and in fact made me feel crappy. Since then, I have applied an "only on actual occasions" drining theory and have stuck to it with very little effort. I've had drinks on 3 occasions - 2 dinners and a lunch, all events with friends.
I'm sleeping so much better, I've lost weight, my concentration has improved, my body aches less, and I just feel better about myself. I plan for this to be normal from here on out.14 -

Popping by to say good morning before September arrives!
Taking the time to reflect on what went well in LA August and what didn’t.
Since February 2023 I am no longer a daily wine drinker…..thanks to finding this wonderful thread!
Yet, not here to quit 100% but to continue my personal LA journey with mindfulness.
Which leads me to say……This month we have a two week all-inclusive cruise. I have been a little worried because there will be a few days of having MORE because of some drink choices I plan to try while on a cruise. However, I realize there are endless low calorie, non-alcoholic mocktail choices I can also choose, and will.
I do know I will be front loading my AF days to start the month off on the right foot!8 -

I want September to be a repeat of August in that I don’t drink a full bottle of wine in one evening. After this morning’s headache after only 2 glasses of wine, it may not be that hard to accomplish.

So last night I did have wine, we were celebrating a bit of a success. This morning my head hurts and I'm in bed an hour later than normal and I realise that wine didn't ADD anything to the evening, I'd have been just as happy without it. I'm posting this here so I remember!8 -

I feel the same as you. In the evenings I feel like drinking. But in the morning I wish that I hadn't 😒
Since you're new you don't know my story. I had been drinking daily (whiskey and soda) and I had a heck of a time just getting 1 day AF. But once I did, I did really well.
I would like to have a good AF streak again in September. But at the same time, I feel like I should allow myself an A day from time to time. I guess we'll see what September brings.
Since I've cut down it really hits me harder. The first time I drank after a 21 day streak I felt buzzed after the first drink.

I've been in a similar boat, but with wine. My husband and I have had a rough 6 months, and wine's been the default at knock off time every day. I've been feeling more and more that I don't even enjoy it, it's just what I do, and even that I only do it because it's easier to be around someone drinking when I'm also drinking.
It's been a vicious circle, I drink, I feel crappy during the day and have no motivation, I eat poorly, sleep poorly, and so by evening, I reach for a wine glass.
I decided enough was enough, and instituted the "occasions only" rule and it's early days but it seems to be working so well. Last night was interesting because it was juuuuust inside my definition of "occasion" but my first thought on waking this morning (at some ungodly hour because drinking does that to me) was "that was absolutely not worth it.
I'm hoping to keep a hold of that feeling, and this group seems like a wonderful way to do so!9 -

Welcome! So happy for you that you’ve been able to get to “only on special occasions.” That’s my goal too - right now I’m a daily drinker, trying to stick to just one before I tackle “special occasions only.” Your post is inspiring!

Happy September everyone! So great to see everyone here. Welcome newcomers!
So we closed on the boat technically, but there are some punchlist items that need to be done, so we do the official christening this Friday. My Big Moment was thwarted!🤣
I did fine Friday, had two glasses of wine and an early dinner, and took a huge nap. When I woke up, My son was drinking port. It looked good so I poured myself a glass. I took two sips and said, you know what? I don’t really want this. So I gave it to him.
Yesterday, wine at lunch, then came home and took a nap. Last night while binging in Emily in Paris, the ‘ol Wine Devil came a-knocking at about 6:00. I thought about staving him off but said “nah” and had two glasses of a delicious Riesling we brought back from Germany last year. So, that’s three drinks. Over my goal by one. 😠
Clearly, a glass of wine at lunch makes me completely useless for the rest of the day. Nothing gets done, so I’ll avoid that for the rest of the weekend.
Regrouping today, recommitted to my goals.6 -
Happy September! Hello friends, I am back and ready to set new goals. I'd like to really stop drinking for 40 days since I don't have any planned events during this window and need to buckle down on my diet as well.10

Good morning and HELLO SEPTEMBER.
I did some reflecting and researching yesterday through my drink calender ( yes, it is a real log I keep).
I noticed that last year this time, I definitely was prompted to drink more and gave in. This year, even with many different challenging events I am more focused, aware and ready to put a 🛑 stop sign in front of me before indulging.
The other evening out with my husband, we met up with his Uncle and wife (15 + years our age) I over heard a comment my husband said to his Uncle which completely through me off my balance.
He told his Uncle, You were more fun 8 years ago when you were drinking. I was dumb struck at his comment to this older man. Obviously the "fun" is clearly not the lack on his Uncles part. It is the lack of what is a FUN perception on my husbands end when HE is drinking.
So on the other flip side my goals for September are to continue my dry streak until possibly Sept 28 when we spend an over night in Panama City Beach, Florida.
I have to keep in mind I am the only driver in our family, so NO hangovers the next morning for the drive back home.

Welcome September. Continue to reduce if not just be sober. To keep myself occupied periodically working to redo my backyard from grass (its actually just mowered weeds) to something more ecofriendly to pollinators (birds-butterfly's-bees). Backbreaking work especially in the miserable humidity to break down the hard clay (which is my entire yard) and mix with garden soil to grow native plants. Next spring hoping to grow native milkweed to bring in some Monarchs. While still small, nice to see things buzzing around or on the plants and some smaller butterfly species.12

Last night when I turned the calendar over to September I saw a blank slate. I'm thinking about going AF for the whole month (30 days).
After going weeks without drinking I noticed many positive changes. I wake up feeling good in the morning. I have more energy and more motivation to get things done. I've regained my balance and coordination. I'm much more active. Not to mention the weight loss that goes with being AF.
@Alatariel75 I know what you mean about the vicious circle. When I was drinking daily I would wake up and the first thing I would think about was when I was going to start drinking that day. After I started drinking, I didn't feel like eating. So I would eat whatever was around when I would get hungry. For some reason, nutritious meals weren't appealing to me. I lacked motivation also. But I was also physically sick. It was hard for me to do anything (even go shopping). My energy, balance and coordination were just too bad. I had no strength. I had some other problems that were related to drinking also. All of which have improved in the last few weeks.
I guess I off to a good start...I'm not drinking right now! Although it's only noon 🙂

It’s great to see many returning LA friends here whom are all striving to meet healthier goals!
As I check in for today and review my diary from January - August, it is evident that I am no longer a “daily” wine drinker but think it’s safe to say I am considered a “regular” wine drinker. I know I would like to get back to my 2023 stats where I could say I am only an “occasional” drinker which means no more than 2 x a week.
September is about being more mindful to achieve what I want — greater clarity of mind, more energy to do things, improved physical health and trying new things.
Just a little rant/vent:
Yesterday, I listened to a podcast on macros and alcohol and the registered dietician put it simply for me. Alcohol is its own macro next to Fats, Protein, and Carbohydrates and has only calories and no nutrition. Yes we know this but sometimes I need to hear it again. So when I choose that wine, I am literally allowing myself 300 extra calories of zero nutritional value. Times that by 4 and that’s a whopping 1200 extra calories a week of just alcohol. An obvious block to achieving weight loss.
So my goal for September is to come close to August AF days, enjoy my long vacation and then come October, get back on track BIG time. But for today, I would love a little Prosecco but will be exercising restraint and trying a NA mocktail instead!7 -

@Michieb125 So true about the extra calories, and I rarely ever have just one glass. I'm probably getting anywhere from 800-1200 calories on the days I drink. Should be a good enough reason to stop, but alas....9 -
I don't usually do this, but I'm calling my first day of September AF. Normally I'm afraid I might cave to a craving, but it's already 6:30 and not a craving in sight, WOOHOO.
@SurferGirl1982 I want to shoot for a full 30-day dry streak too. I'm sure I'll have some days of struggle, but I really want to try to do that this month.

Finally played the recorded episodes of one of my favorite reality shows...and realized that I actually forgot to open the saved bottle of out-of-country wine that I intended to drink while watching. 🙄 Went to my wine cellar for the last bottle of Chianti and opened it last night. End of month-long AF streak, but no regrets. Also ordered enough wine to fill 1/4 of my wine rack. [Southern Maryland antique from a local winemaker that holds 160 bottles]. Moderation Attempt 4,321...
Am I just going to be "Maxine" ?? I already have the cat.

Had the last two glasses from the bottle I opened the night before last night which means no wine today when we have guests over because I don’t have any. Completely fine with me.
Welcome to the group @Pokey4321. The yard work to keep your mind off drinking is a good idea. I like to craft to keep my hands busy and my mind off the wine.

@MissMay I guess I don’t remember or know much of your back story. Sorry. Is your hubby a heavy drinker? What he said to his uncle sounds like something I used to think about people, and I’ve since realized it wasn’t that they were more fun when THEY were drinking. They were “more fun” to me when I was drinking. Like you said… perception. I am learning those people are still fun, but differently than I “remember” because I could never remember the times I was drinking anyway. If he is a heavy drinker, I can see why you keep a log and started this group to help you scale back. It’s not easy to slow down/stop when your partner goes hard in the paint all the time. @MissMay your DH’s comment was an eye-opener to you, I’m sure. How we interact with others when we slow down drinking definitely changes. It’s kind of like saying to someone who has been losing weight “ you were so much more fun when you were fat and always ordered dessert!”
Slightly over two glasses of wine last night at a party, then stopped because I had to drive home. One of my friends is also trying to cut down on the wine that we love so much, so we promised to check in with each other for support. I’m so happy to find a like minded person in the wild!
Today we all golf, and I don’t plan to have a drink while playing. I know I will take a sip or two of my husband’s drink while on the course, but I won’t order my own. Just one with dinner afterwards. And then that’s it! I need to balance out my weekend!5 -
I drank 250 ml of whiskey last night (just over a half pint). But as usual I didn't really enjoy it. I wanted to have an AF September. I'll just have to be AF on October 1st. So I can still have my 30 days 🙂

I hope everyone enjoys their holiday marking the end of summer. I’m logging for today as it is already planned out. We’re cooking ribs and chicken with a healthy Mediterranean salad later this afternoon. Will finish open wine, then focus on wine free days for the rest of the week. August was a bust with only 10 AF days. I know I always find unexpected joy when I have a lot more dry days than not!

Last month I really got into hard cider and found it such a refreshing summer drink. Since it's AF month for me, plan is to try out Two Towns Cider Sidekick Cosmic Crisp. 50 calories and NA. Will report back if it's any good.5
