    Mo - what great news about your mom being able to stay put. And I agree with many others who have commented here. That mom pushed boundaries. I wonder if having a very sick child that you have helped care for helped her feel like you were one of the family? Sounds like she's not getting emotional support elsewhere, but you're right - her mental, emotional and physical health are beyond your scope of responsibility. I admire you for standing firm.

    Barbara - Aronia berries. For many months now, I've been making a chia pudding with some milk, greek yogurt, and a bit of slightly sweetened (with monkfruit) whey protein. I normally would add a handful of blueberries, raspberries, cherries, etc. Now with the Aronia ripening, I toss a tablespoon or so of them into the mix. Through trial and error, I discovered that they are best when some berries start shriveling on the bush in mid-late September. They start to acquire a little sweetness which counteracts the astringency (the "choke" sensation). And since I've eliminated sugar from my diet, some foods just taste sweeter so for me, they are edible as is. They could probably be added to cookies, muffins, etc. Which I rarely eat anymore.

    Rita - yummy looking supper. Glad your DS is doing ok, thoughtful of him to call. :)

    Ginny - after I posted about the garage door, I remembered back before the days of garage door picker-uppers, I opened and l closed a lot of garage doors. Of course I was in my 20's and 30's back then and this was before my left shoulder went bonkers. Thanks for the reminder to just give it try though. I think I mentioned in this group that in early 2023, I purchased a small power supply with solar charging panels. Yesterday, I decided to see how well it would power items larger charging than the laptop, tablets and phone. Well, it has enough power to run a small electric blanket on low for a couple hours. If I was in dire straights, it would be useful for a quick warm-up for a few minutes to conserve the battery.

    It doesn't have enough juice to run DH's old 3.6 cu ft. mini fridge. So mulling over options. Get another bigger power supply? Much smaller "RV" type 12v. fridge/cooler? I'll be heading down some rabbit holes :p .

    KJ Kelly and Kylia and Rosemarie - I'm sure you are super busy, please pop in when you get a chance. Ketone Karen - good to see you if only for a second! Hope life is good at the "old geezer's home." :p

    Hey, kids,

    Up at my usual design-brain moment - 1:30 a.m. for some ungodly reason - because I had an idea that couldn't wait until a reasonable hour to find some paper and sketch out with some details... ah well, sleep will always come back around at some point.

    Stopping a moment to say "Hi" and peel y'all off my conscious thinking process, and then going after that and the resolution to my pocket problem.

    Machka - I know you're aware than most of this little fact that occurs to me on occasion. There is no way on Earth that I would be alive (and awake! Ha!) without the advent of modern medicine. At any other time in our history, I simply wouldn't have survived some parts of my life, and others would have disabled me partially or completely. For instance, I would have been half blind at 14 had an eye doctor not been available to repair my eyelid and tear duct when my brother kicked me in the eye. That was just one. I get a little cranky about the various medical-industrial establishments, but am terribly grateful for medicine and those who practice it.

    And apparently, sleep (in four-hour chunks anyway) is where my inspiration lurks, waiting, to surface from the dark waters of my subconscious (or maybe pre-conscious) mind. I'd prefer exercise... 😂 Will have to try it!

    We’re losing our DST, too. I have to just dream of when it’ll be back

    When we cut the grass, I’m going to try not wearing the special insert and see how it goes

    Today we cut the grass, then I put down more “shade only” seed (wanted to use up the bag) and seeded a few other areas. Then came in the house to make icing and ice the chocolate banana cake I made for Vince

    Lisa – I love pocketbooks with lots of pockets for all sorts of things. You did a fantastic job!

    Vince’s plantar fasciitis: he keeps saying “everything I’ve read says that you should rest it”. Well, I’ve decided that the next time he rests it, I’m going to tell him that even tho I’m not dr. Google, Dr. Google is wrong and he needs to be exercising that muscle. It’s shortened and he needs to lengthen it. If he keeps on staying off his feet, he’s only going to make it worse. I was where he is. I remember having pf a while ago and I remember that when I went to the water aerobics class, I’d stand on the steps into the pool, drop my heels and stretch that muscle. There is no reason in the world that I can think of why he can’t sit and do other work while rolling the foot on an ice water bottle. Exercise really is the best medicine. Enough rant.

    My hips were tight so I did some yoga this morning that concentrated on the hip opening. I feel so much better.

    Didn’t wear the insert while cutting the grass and didn’t feel the burning or anything. Think I’ll try wearing another pair of shoes tomorrow to work that I like but with just the regular insert and see how it goes

    Well, Vince hasn’t said anything about having to stay off his feet (according to Dr. Google). A few years ago, Loki peed on the one bedroom door. This was before we knew that he had an anxiety disorder. Anyway, at that time I mentioned to Vince that we should get a new door. He wanted to fix it, told me how it was going to happen. But it never happened...until recently when I pushed for it. Of course, in the years its gotten worse. Anyway, to get the sanding started, guess who had to do it? Then he tells me that we’re going to paint the entire door in the garage. Why couldn’t we just have sanded and painted in the garage so I wouldn’t have the mess to clean up? Well...I guess it could be worse.

    Lisa and anyone else, have you replaced an interior door but not the frame? Did you encounter any problems, and if so, what were they?

    I have no voice.

    One thing I hate about air travel is that I pick up disease from someone sitting nearby.

    However, on a positive note, I have lost 1.4 kg of water weight from what I retained during the flight.

    Well done on the decluttering! I've been meaning to congratulate you for a while.

    Now that I'm home, I need to keep unpacking and decluttering and organising. We got our place to a point where we can basically function before we left, but we need to improve on that.

    I'd like DST to remain in place year round.

    Because of the hours I work, during standard time, I can go days without seeing daylight. That plunges me into the depths of Seasonal Affected Disorder.

    When Alberta lengthened DST to 8 months, that helped a lot. By the time standard time comes into effect in Alberta, it's close enough to Christmas that people start putting up more lights and there are events and things to attend. January and February are depressing but it's only 2 months.

    Here, standard time is 6 months (April, May, June, July, August, September) during which time there are no events, no special holidays, no twinkling lights ... just 6 months of darkness. A lot of us 9-5 office workers struggle with it. If they were to shorten it to just May - August (inclusive), like Alberta did, that would help because we would have evening light in April and September. I've asked ... but they aren't inclined to do that.

    It's one of the reasons I've gone to a 9-day fortnight at work ... so I can actually see daylight an extra day each fortnight!

    It's one of the reasons we chose to buy the house we did. Our rental house was good that it had big windows and a nice view ... part of the reason we stayed there 10 years! We looked at a lot of houses many of which I turned down because they had a view of the neighbour's wall next door or across the street, and I knew I wouldn't get the feeling of openness and light I needed.

    And it's one of the reasons we (and lots of other people here) travel or simply take days off between April and September. I wasn't as desperate for DST this year because I took a 4-day weekend each month, I had a week off at the beginning of August and a month in Canada in September. Just as days were becoming darker in Canada, we came back here to the increased light! :)

    My husband doesn't really care one way or the other about DST (although he does like when we've got light in the evenings to cycle) and the change isn't a jolt for him ... but that's because he's retired and doesn't have to be places at a certain time. But for those of us who work ... it matters.

    Anyway ... we're into the happy time of year now. :) And as soon as I recover from whatever nasty I picked up on the flight, we'll be exercising in the evenings again. :)



    Good morning, Friends. I have had a challenge from a parent who demanded the charge nurse to assign me to her child. Then she asked for my number, and I said, "No, Mam." I explained that it was against the rules She didn't want me to leave and had me looking at pics on her phone Last night she wanted me to go in the bathroom with her to look at her butt cause she is bleeding I told her I would watch her child, while she goes to the ER I explained that I am not a proctologist Then she told me that she brought her chart if I needed a refresh of her history I told her I am here to care for her daughter not her She said that I always set her straight even in November 13, 2022 when I first cared for them She asked if she could call me Ti-Ti or Grandma I told her that she could call me Monique or Mo My friend use to help me get out of the room in the past and then she would get stuck So I had to tell my co-workers to help me if I was gone too long (they didn't) I got out late, and the day shift laughed at me Her daughter is so sweet Then the woman asked if I could cook her a meal today and bring it in I told her no My meals are pre-planned, so I do not have to cook when I am working So, I have a challenging weekend I did have a cute baby to care for, but the mom didn't share The other one, the mom and I got along well.
    I wonder if I am getting mean at my mature age. I am very protective of my time, and my neighbors want me to hang out with them individually—especially the one who smokes. I stayed with her when she fell until AMR arrived to get her up. I can't tolerate cigarette smoke due to my asthma.

    Is there a carer's peer group for mom's of sick kids? Maybe she needs to get in with others in the same circumstance to learn some coping techniques or just to sympathise with each other.

    Yes, Canada has that model of care. Australia has a few, but they haven't really got on board with it yet which is problematic for my husband and me.

    However, the place my mother likes (and many others she is less keen about) have what they call "aging in place": Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Full Care. Most of those are private and have various payment schemes.

    The place my mother likes offers rentals for between about $6000 and $7000/month for a 2-bedroom unit (for my mother and father) for independent living, plus a list of fees for various and sundry services. I thought meals might be included in that, but nope, if you're a rental client, you get a 10 or 15% discount at the on-site cafes and restaurants.

    That's one option. The other option is something they call a Life Lease. The client hands over about $800,000 up front for a 29-year Life Lease. The "rental" costs are about $2400/month which come out of the $800,000. If a person leaves after 10 years (dies or moves out), they will have "spent" $2400/month * 12 months = $28,800 * 10 years = $288,000 of the $800,000 so they will receive back $512,000. Or in the case of death, their heirs will receive $512,000. But it seems there are still a lot of additional fees and things for housekeeping, meals, etc., so not only would the client need $800,000 up front, the client would need additional money in the back or source of income to pay for the additional fees.

    My parents don't have that kind of money for either option.

    There are other places which offer "aging in place" like the one my grandmother was in. It's 2-bedroom rentals are about $4000/month and include 1 meal a day plus a few other things. I think that's a better option.

    There are any number of similar places with varying degrees of quality. But they all appear to be apartment buildings, which my father doesn't like.

    There are also some public facilities but they seem to be for further down the line.

    Unfortunately there does not seem to be a central source of information so it is very difficult to find out what is available in terms of private, public, home care, funding sources, etc. etc. I've waded into the rabbit warren of websites and have come away confused each time.


    In Australia (not for my parents, but for my husband and me), there are a few aging in place facilities, but not many. The push here is to age at home until right near the end. People here are encouraged to take advantage of family members or if necessary, try to get one of the few home care packages.

    But there is a central source of information which is helpful.


    However, in Canada, my parents live in an accessible house, and in Australia we now live in an accessible house, so we could conceivably continue to live where we are for a few more years which I think will be the most economical choice. And if I can manage to wade through the convoluted home care information in Canada, I might be able to put something like that into place for my parents.

Alas, no time due fellowship prep I procrastinated on last night. Maybe when I get home from church? Yes dogs to powerline. Lovely afternoon, view of the ocean. ;)

    Barbie I’m with you about the gradual vs abrupt time changes. Hope this isn’t too political:
    Oregon tried to “ditch the switch” back in 2019 by keeping DST year round (like CA and WA?)-but that requires US Congressional ok. Rather than wait, earlier this year the state Senate voted to put Oregon on permanent standard time, but the state house of representatives didn’t address the bill and it died. https://www.opb.org/article/2024/03/05/oregon-legislature-no-end-to-daylight-saving-time-this-year/ [sigh]

    Machka eight years of piano lessons in my youth have mouldered. Finally gave Mama’s piano to SIL for niece before we left Idaho. Kept this keyboard for picking out hymns, but haven’t got it set up right for practicing or playing for pleasure. Maybe once it’s completely de-cluttered ;)

    Welcome Wendie. Most of us have endured your same struggles at least once in our lifetime. Hope you find some good tips here - this group is great at support. ;)

    Barbara - thank you for posting your decluttering, it's such a good reminder for me to get after some of the piles I have around here.

    Tracey - I see Walmart has small 100 watt heaters that people buy to put under their desks to keep their feet warm. I'm going to pick one up and see if my little power station can run it and if so, for how long.

    I also have a Little Buddy heater than runs off a small propane tank. It's still in the box, lol. Part of the problem is it needs ventilation, but I've heard that it can make a small area cozy for a bit without becoming a carbon monoxide hazard, but I'm no expert on this. The price of propane in those little 1# bottles is outrageous, but what isn't. :s Sorry your foot is bugging you again. This seems to be the year of the painful foot for many of us. :o

    Lisa - awesome job on that bag, love the compartments. I've seen high-end bags like that which go for big $$.

    I took a chance and ordered shoes off Amazon a week ago. Since the New Balance 1080 V13 aren't available in my size anymore, I got another version of NB1080. Wore them most of the day yesterday with success. They seem a teensy bit longer and wider than the V13, but that's OK. VERY thankful they work and I didn't have to drive to the Olympia and go shoe shopping. ;)

    It's supposed to be warm this afternoon - upper 70's. Leaves are starting to fall, and if they are dry enough I'll get after them with the leaf blower and spread them in the yard and mow them into mulch later.

    RVRita in Roswell who slept too long this morning. I was up at least 4 times with dogs during the night. Aging for anything/anyone is not for the weak!!
