Today isGarlic Day! FYI I planted some garlic for next year harvest. We are planning on moving sometimes in the beginning of 2025 into a house and want to take my bucket garden with us. That is going to be tough! Lots of weight lifting!!
Teachers, Grandparents, and Badgers (?) to celebrate today! Have a great day today!

Mo - what great news about your mom being able to stay put. And I agree with many others who have commented here. That mom pushed boundaries. I wonder if having a very sick child that you have helped care for helped her feel like you were one of the family? Sounds like she's not getting emotional support elsewhere, but you're right - her mental, emotional and physical health are beyond your scope of responsibility. I admire you for standing firm.
Barbara - Aronia berries. For many months now, I've been making a chia pudding with some milk, greek yogurt, and a bit of slightly sweetened (with monkfruit) whey protein. I normally would add a handful of blueberries, raspberries, cherries, etc. Now with the Aronia ripening, I toss a tablespoon or so of them into the mix. Through trial and error, I discovered that they are best when some berries start shriveling on the bush in mid-late September. They start to acquire a little sweetness which counteracts the astringency (the "choke" sensation). And since I've eliminated sugar from my diet, some foods just taste sweeter so for me, they are edible as is. They could probably be added to cookies, muffins, etc. Which I rarely eat anymore.
Rita - yummy looking supper. Glad your DS is doing ok, thoughtful of him to call.
Ginny - after I posted about the garage door, I remembered back before the days of garage door picker-uppers, I opened and l closed a lot of garage doors. Of course I was in my 20's and 30's back then and this was before my left shoulder went bonkers. Thanks for the reminder to just give it try though. I think I mentioned in this group that in early 2023, I purchased a small power supply with solar charging panels. Yesterday, I decided to see how well it would power items larger charging than the laptop, tablets and phone. Well, it has enough power to run a small electric blanket on low for a couple hours. If I was in dire straights, it would be useful for a quick warm-up for a few minutes to conserve the battery.
It doesn't have enough juice to run DH's old 3.6 cu ft. mini fridge. So mulling over options. Get another bigger power supply? Much smaller "RV" type 12v. fridge/cooler? I'll be heading down some rabbit holes .
KJ Kelly and Kylia and Rosemarie - I'm sure you are super busy, please pop in when you get a chance. Ketone Karen - good to see you if only for a second! Hope life is good at the "old geezer's home."
I've been working on this post for hours. Getting many interruptions so better get it posted before it's days old.
Weekly Check-in reminder for those of you participating. Please get info to me no later than tomorrow noon. TIA! (Is it just me or Mondays coming quicker than they used to?)

Up at my usual design-brain moment - 1:30 a.m. for some ungodly reason - because I had an idea that couldn't wait until a reasonable hour to find some paper and sketch out with some details... ah well, sleep will always come back around at some point.
Stopping a moment to say "Hi" and peel y'all off my conscious thinking process, and then going after that and the resolution to my pocket problem.
Machka - I know you're aware than most of this little fact that occurs to me on occasion. There is no way on Earth that I would be alive (and awake! Ha!) without the advent of modern medicine. At any other time in our history, I simply wouldn't have survived some parts of my life, and others would have disabled me partially or completely. For instance, I would have been half blind at 14 had an eye doctor not been available to repair my eyelid and tear duct when my brother kicked me in the eye. That was just one. I get a little cranky about the various medical-industrial establishments, but am terribly grateful for medicine and those who practice it.
And apparently, sleep (in four-hour chunks anyway) is where my inspiration lurks, waiting, to surface from the dark waters of my subconscious (or maybe pre-conscious) mind. I'd prefer exercise... 😂 Will have to try it!
Onward through the fog...
Love y'all!

I was a blue baby when born, so I have nothing but gratitude for medicine, and the medical community as a whole. Without it, I just wouldn't be here. 👍🏼😁🤗

Finished my first Kokopelli bag. I have five more of these - they're woven table mats I picked up at a yard sale when we lived in West Texas. Hung onto them for a dozen years. Now I know why!

Great job, Lisa! Like the pockets and zip.
Had delicious dinner of pork cheeks stewed in dark beer. Heaven!
Unusually for me, I wrote this Sunday morning. I reckoned I wouldn't be able to do it tomorrow as I have physio, then covid and flu jabs. It always sets the day up nicely.
I've been concentrating on strengthening my glutes, and can now just about walk down the stairs with both feet. Amazing! Going up is much harder, but I am encouraged by my progress in such a short time!
Love to all, must practice my Duolingo before bed. Revising my Spanish.

Well, since tomorrow is the cut off date for me to earn my jersey (raise $1000), kirby said the kids (our dogs, yogi, Lucy and chispas). Wanted to donate the rest and use the allowance that they have been saving up. So they donated the $109.09 I needed to get my jersey. I have such good kids. 2 nephews came through and donated, which was awesome. It got me thinking, I wonder what amount of money do they think I am expecting from them. One, two, three hundred? A donation in my mind just that a donation, $5, $10, $20 is good enough, I am over the moon when I get more. I haven’t called them and will wait until they call me,then I will say something, ESPECIALLY to my sister regarding the ignorant text I got from her son, just makes me want to punch him!
Feels good sitting in in my back patio again.

Did Jillian Michaels Banish Fat Boost Metabolism DVD and then some yoga. Then took a walk around the neighborhood then Aldi. In a few we’ll go cut the grass
We’re losing our DST, too. I have to just dream of when it’ll be back
When we cut the grass, I’m going to try not wearing the special insert and see how it goes
Today we cut the grass, then I put down more “shade only” seed (wanted to use up the bag) and seeded a few other areas. Then came in the house to make icing and ice the chocolate banana cake I made for Vince
Lisa – I love pocketbooks with lots of pockets for all sorts of things. You did a fantastic job!
Vince’s plantar fasciitis: he keeps saying “everything I’ve read says that you should rest it”. Well, I’ve decided that the next time he rests it, I’m going to tell him that even tho I’m not dr. Google, Dr. Google is wrong and he needs to be exercising that muscle. It’s shortened and he needs to lengthen it. If he keeps on staying off his feet, he’s only going to make it worse. I was where he is. I remember having pf a while ago and I remember that when I went to the water aerobics class, I’d stand on the steps into the pool, drop my heels and stretch that muscle. There is no reason in the world that I can think of why he can’t sit and do other work while rolling the foot on an ice water bottle. Exercise really is the best medicine. Enough rant.
My hips were tight so I did some yoga this morning that concentrated on the hip opening. I feel so much better.
Didn’t wear the insert while cutting the grass and didn’t feel the burning or anything. Think I’ll try wearing another pair of shoes tomorrow to work that I like but with just the regular insert and see how it goes
pip – what absolutely fantastic kids you have. That’s probably because you deserve it
Well, Vince hasn’t said anything about having to stay off his feet (according to Dr. Google). A few years ago, Loki peed on the one bedroom door. This was before we knew that he had an anxiety disorder. Anyway, at that time I mentioned to Vince that we should get a new door. He wanted to fix it, told me how it was going to happen. But it never happened...until recently when I pushed for it. Of course, in the years its gotten worse. Anyway, to get the sanding started, guess who had to do it? Then he tells me that we’re going to paint the entire door in the garage. Why couldn’t we just have sanded and painted in the garage so I wouldn’t have the mess to clean up? Well...I guess it could be worse.
Lisa and anyone else, have you replaced an interior door but not the frame? Did you encounter any problems, and if so, what were they?

Mo Great job in setting boundaries with the parent of one of your patients. Sorry you have to set the boundaries in the first place.
Debbie I am sorry MIL is so awful. DH is the one who needs to set boundaries. I understand why it is so hard to do! The fact that it is costing you peace of mind and money is not right. You are correct she will not care what it costs you. She sounds like a very troubled woman.
she really is something. I have never met a person so hateful and mean, especially to her own son when he does everything for her and there is no one else that is around to help at all. Only other family she has is a niece who lives in Osaka,Japan(she wants to "help"her, AFTER she gets her name on all the bank accounts/house,etc- then she will put her in a home over there and take all her money)
When the niece came to visit about 10 yrs ago, MIL accused her of stealing some of her jewelry- Not sure if she really did or not.
It seems DH is FINALLY started to not let her words get to him as much and he is walking away sooner and not sitting there taking the abuse as long as he was. Hoping he gets better at it. Everyone has been telling him he needs to do it- maybe he is finally listening.
Barbie- It really is. Together 35 yrs, married for 32- If it really was that easy, I would have left a long time ago. I just have to not let their bitterness and anger get to me.5 -

Machka - lovely picture of you and your grandmother.
Barbara - paper stacks is always a thing. I have managed to contain mine in a file folder box. I set most things to electronic these days.
Remember the old letter sorters we had hanging, usually in a kitchen. When I painted years ago, I painted one that said bills, bills and more bills instead of the usual mail, letters and bills.
Ginny - the old nursing home I worked at was owned by a society. There was an apartment next door to us that had a pedway that lead to the manor. Residents there could come eat meals in our dining room. Our social worker checked in on the residents and helped them out if needed. When they needed more help they had first priority for the home.
Lisa - I remember things from the way back machine and not the sentence I’m trying to speak sometimes, you’re not alone! You’re also not alone in cooked fruit. I am not a fan, I love the smell though.
Allie - does your cruise leave from Florida?
Miles and Delia look cozy, is Miles adjusting to her well?
Lanette - I have been looking for a way to heat my DH little shop without electricity. It’s a tough thing to find.
Michele - I agree with you about the exercises, but I was advised by my doctor and physio that I did need to rest my foot to allow it time to heal with along with the calf exercises. I was petrified when I started my practicum it would get worse again. It’s actually flaring again now even with all of the remedies.
I finished my grocery shopping today, it was a pricier week than normal because our Costco membership needed renewed, and I needed to buy a turkey for next weekend. The smallest one I could find was $32. I did buy a small stick vacuum, mine is too big and cumbersome for what I need. It’s old but still works. I’ll post it on Marketplace for $10 and see if I get a bite. The one I bought was only $34.
I bought a small roast beef for supper tonight, it’s my favourite meal but they have been so expensive this year I think it’s the first one I’ve bought. I ate way too much at supper.
I’m watching a 50th anniversary special of the American Music Awards. I record these shows so I can scroll on by what I’m not interested in.
I’m sleepy but it’s only 830 so seems way too early to go to bed.
It’s supposed to be 24 tomorrow! There are also supposed to be awesome Aurora’s tonight but they usually peak after my bedtime.

Will tackle the remainder another time.
Well done on the decluttering! I've been meaning to congratulate you for a while.
Now that I'm home, I need to keep unpacking and decluttering and organising. We got our place to a point where we can basically function before we left, but we need to improve on that.
Do you play the piano? The days get longer and shorter all by themselves. DST just shifts it from one end of the day to the other. Depending on how one lives ones life, it matters whether the light is in the morning or the evening. Days are getting shorter here, and will continue to do so until December. I find it very jarring when the clocks change because I am a creature of habit and the gradual changes fit better with me than a sudden change.
Barbie in NW WA
I'd like DST to remain in place year round.
Because of the hours I work, during standard time, I can go days without seeing daylight. That plunges me into the depths of Seasonal Affected Disorder.
When Alberta lengthened DST to 8 months, that helped a lot. By the time standard time comes into effect in Alberta, it's close enough to Christmas that people start putting up more lights and there are events and things to attend. January and February are depressing but it's only 2 months.
Here, standard time is 6 months (April, May, June, July, August, September) during which time there are no events, no special holidays, no twinkling lights ... just 6 months of darkness. A lot of us 9-5 office workers struggle with it. If they were to shorten it to just May - August (inclusive), like Alberta did, that would help because we would have evening light in April and September. I've asked ... but they aren't inclined to do that.
It's one of the reasons I've gone to a 9-day fortnight at work ... so I can actually see daylight an extra day each fortnight!
It's one of the reasons we chose to buy the house we did. Our rental house was good that it had big windows and a nice view ... part of the reason we stayed there 10 years! We looked at a lot of houses many of which I turned down because they had a view of the neighbour's wall next door or across the street, and I knew I wouldn't get the feeling of openness and light I needed.
And it's one of the reasons we (and lots of other people here) travel or simply take days off between April and September. I wasn't as desperate for DST this year because I took a 4-day weekend each month, I had a week off at the beginning of August and a month in Canada in September. Just as days were becoming darker in Canada, we came back here to the increased light!
My husband doesn't really care one way or the other about DST (although he does like when we've got light in the evenings to cycle) and the change isn't a jolt for him ... but that's because he's retired and doesn't have to be places at a certain time. But for those of us who work ... it matters.
Anyway ... we're into the happy time of year now. And as soon as I recover from whatever nasty I picked up on the flight, we'll be exercising in the evenings again.mcmillonmail wrote: »Good morning, Friends. Is there a carer's peer group for mom's of sick kids? Maybe she needs to get in with others in the same circumstance to learn some coping techniques or just to sympathise with each other.Machka-I don't know if they have them in Canada but I am looking at independent living with an assisted living option available-hopefully that would eliminate 2 moves. I am thinking that while now I feel pretty good, as I move into my 70s it might be nice to assistance if needed-during illness and such. Of course, you all know I can change my mind at any moment, but that is what is appealing.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio
Yes, Canada has that model of care. Australia has a few, but they haven't really got on board with it yet which is problematic for my husband and me.
However, the place my mother likes (and many others she is less keen about) have what they call "aging in place": Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Full Care. Most of those are private and have various payment schemes.
The place my mother likes offers rentals for between about $6000 and $7000/month for a 2-bedroom unit (for my mother and father) for independent living, plus a list of fees for various and sundry services. I thought meals might be included in that, but nope, if you're a rental client, you get a 10 or 15% discount at the on-site cafes and restaurants.
That's one option. The other option is something they call a Life Lease. The client hands over about $800,000 up front for a 29-year Life Lease. The "rental" costs are about $2400/month which come out of the $800,000. If a person leaves after 10 years (dies or moves out), they will have "spent" $2400/month * 12 months = $28,800 * 10 years = $288,000 of the $800,000 so they will receive back $512,000. Or in the case of death, their heirs will receive $512,000. But it seems there are still a lot of additional fees and things for housekeeping, meals, etc., so not only would the client need $800,000 up front, the client would need additional money in the back or source of income to pay for the additional fees.
My parents don't have that kind of money for either option.
There are other places which offer "aging in place" like the one my grandmother was in. It's 2-bedroom rentals are about $4000/month and include 1 meal a day plus a few other things. I think that's a better option.
There are any number of similar places with varying degrees of quality. But they all appear to be apartment buildings, which my father doesn't like.
There are also some public facilities but they seem to be for further down the line.
Unfortunately there does not seem to be a central source of information so it is very difficult to find out what is available in terms of private, public, home care, funding sources, etc. etc. I've waded into the rabbit warren of websites and have come away confused each time.
In Australia (not for my parents, but for my husband and me), there are a few aging in place facilities, but not many. The push here is to age at home until right near the end. People here are encouraged to take advantage of family members or if necessary, try to get one of the few home care packages.
But there is a central source of information which is helpful.
However, in Canada, my parents live in an accessible house, and in Australia we now live in an accessible house, so we could conceivably continue to live where we are for a few more years which I think will be the most economical choice. And if I can manage to wade through the convoluted home care information in Canada, I might be able to put something like that into place for my parents.

Barbie I’m with you about the gradual vs abrupt time changes. Hope this isn’t too political:Oregon tried to “ditch the switch” back in 2019 by keeping DST year round (like CA and WA?)-but that requires US Congressional ok. Rather than wait, earlier this year the state Senate voted to put Oregon on permanent standard time, but the state house of representatives didn’t address the bill and it died. https://www.opb.org/article/2024/03/05/oregon-legislature-no-end-to-daylight-saving-time-this-year/ [sigh]Lanette, not just you. My word for 2024 is "enough"
Hi All
Thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself. I'm Wendie, I'm 60 next year, I have two grown up sons who live away, two idiot dogs and a long term partner who is a fantastic cook and insists on cooking weekends (and whenever he feels like taking over on weekdays) but can't grasp portion size or healthy options. Oh and I am a hopeless yoyo dieter who comfort eats.
Five years ago I hit my chosen weight after eighteen months of eating ro lose and then just piled it back on. So, I know I can do it but I can't seem to get in the right mindset this time. I'm hoping the right encouragement will help me.
Thank you for reading this.

Welcome Wendie. Most of us have endured your same struggles at least once in our lifetime. Hope you find some good tips here - this group is great at support.
Barbara - thank you for posting your decluttering, it's such a good reminder for me to get after some of the piles I have around here.
Tracey - I see Walmart has small 100 watt heaters that people buy to put under their desks to keep their feet warm. I'm going to pick one up and see if my little power station can run it and if so, for how long.
I also have a Little Buddy heater than runs off a small propane tank. It's still in the box, lol. Part of the problem is it needs ventilation, but I've heard that it can make a small area cozy for a bit without becoming a carbon monoxide hazard, but I'm no expert on this. The price of propane in those little 1# bottles is outrageous, but what isn't. Sorry your foot is bugging you again. This seems to be the year of the painful foot for many of us.
Lisa - awesome job on that bag, love the compartments. I've seen high-end bags like that which go for big $$.
I took a chance and ordered shoes off Amazon a week ago. Since the New Balance 1080 V13 aren't available in my size anymore, I got another version of NB1080. Wore them most of the day yesterday with success. They seem a teensy bit longer and wider than the V13, but that's OK. VERY thankful they work and I didn't have to drive to the Olympia and go shoe shopping.
It's supposed to be warm this afternoon - upper 70's. Leaves are starting to fall, and if they are dry enough I'll get after them with the leaf blower and spread them in the yard and mow them into mulch later.
Make it a fabulous week.
Lanette

Happy Monday!
Welcome Wendie!
Lisa ~ Your shoulder bags look good and many will love all the pockets and space. They show quite a bit of what seems to be tedious work.
Barbara ~ I love your saying about open your heart before your mouth. I have had to do a lot of lip biting lately in dealing with my DH who is still on the IF way of eating. He is losing weight which is great but does cause problems. Also, your continued work on decluttering is inspiring. When you speak of living among the fir tree forest and being able to see the ocean when you descend the hill, it makes me just imagine the beauty of it. I would love to see that.
Another night of not sleeping but that's OK. My HP desktop has been acting WONKY for the last month and I am ready to throw it out. It won't work with my camera (I want to sell some of that jewelry I showed a week or so ago) mainly because the flash drive is not detecting the camera. I think a lot of this has been caused by all the Windows updates. I spent most of Sunday and Saturday trying to find a fix with no luck. On impulse, I ordered a Dell desktop and will see if I keep it or return. I had a Dell laptop at school when I was teaching and I liked it a lot.
My own decluttering continues slowly one bit at a time. Right now I am sorting through my Mom's & MnL's handbags and will donate them. They are very pretty and in good shape. DH is not happy about me giving stuff away. He hates to get rid of anything. When we pass on our son will have a huge task getting rid of all the stuff in the basement. It makes me want to cry.

Carol - Good job on persisting with the decluttering. It's great to pass on things so that other people will love them. They will have another life and you are doing good in this world. Plus the charity benefits, so wins all round. The better the quality, the more good you are doing. Sneak a few things out of that basement every day!
I've signed off at the physio, as I think we've done enough together. The YouTube exercises I've found have done more in two days than weeks with him. I didn’t quite tell him that, but did say I was concentrating on glutes. He's nice, and we get on well, but there's nothing I can't glean for myself from other sources. Fortunately, I haven't had to pay for these eight or so visits, as it was included in my operations package. It only costs me the Uber.
I am feeling increasingly optimistic about my dodgy knee.
I walked down to Canhams for a couple of chilli Scotch Eggs and also bought some 'herby pork sausages' for dinner. We will have white haricot beans with it, lots of garlic, and I bought tenderstem broccoli later to go with it.
I caught the bus to the jab pharmacy, but managed to fit in sending back an Amazon parcel, buying organic garlic, gluten free bread for Edie, focaccia, and the broccoli. Then I had a coffee outside in the sunshine. Wandered back down to the pharmacy and a charming young man did my jabs. A reasonably long walk home, laden with shopping and my jacket I took off, so I must have walked a good mile this morning, carrying stuff.
Pretty much knackered when I got back and my nap was over long. I can feel my arm now, and expect to have some reaction. I always do. Tomorrow is a clear day, thank goodness.
My brother comes out of hospital today and is making baby steps of improvement. My ex is also home.
Much love to all. Heather UK xxxxxxxx7 -
Talked to my daughter Lisa yesterday, texted my middle DD (problem child), and texted back and forth with my brother who moved from Arizona to Kentucky last week. Middle DD didn’t reply, not unusual. Dinner yesterday my DH called Thanksgiving practice! Chicken breast, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pan fried potatoes, a bit of gravy, and French cut string beans.

Today is: a good to soak in a tub with a book and a frappe if you have them! 🛁
RVRita in Roswell who slept too long this morning. I was up at least 4 times with dogs during the night. Aging for anything/anyone is not for the weak!!

Listening to Ben make little farting noises as he sleeps in the living room. I am glad I have no sense of smell.😂
Last night he decided to not sleep on the dog bed in the closet in the bedroom. In the bedroom all he wanted to do was stick his nose in clothes on the floor and chew on them (which I wasn't allowing). He finally went to bed on the dog bed in the living room at 11 pm. I snuck down to the bed and slept. He woke up at 5:30 am, wishing to go out.
My cousin and husband arrive home midnight tonight. I plan on just napping on top of their bed, then switch to the couch when they arrive home. No sense blowing up the air bed. I really dislike them. They shouldn't have to organize all that at that hour. I want them to be able to sleep in their own bed after traveling.👍🏼

Carol, My decluttering has been to make my house and my life more comfortable and to pass things on to others to enjoy them. I remind myself that I won't be here to watch when our kids have to clean up after us. I won't see it and I won't know what happens. I have to stay in the moment.

Hi Gals,
Sorry to mia for so long, but just in over my head with stuff here.
Carol and Barbara – great jobs on de-cluttering and just keep at it. Carol I wonder if you could get your daughter in law to help you, not do the work but could you “give” her a handbag or two or other “girl” items and she could take them to a charity shop for you? Would that make things easier with DH? Also remember that handbags are a great thing to de-clutter because you can tuck other thing inside so it looks like you are donating one handbag but inside is a number of other small things.
Lisa the bag is great! I love specific sized pockets and a hook for my keys.
Heather – great job on the exercising and walking into town…. Glad you have been able to find exercises that are helping.
Lanette – I have found of all the clothing out there to buy on line “tennis” shoes are the easiest- once you know the brand and model the colors change from year but the sizing doesn’t and I have found some great deals one a previous year’s color or a color that is quite ugly but for my morning walking shoe I do not care what the color is just that they are comfortable and supportive.
Rita- I am so impressed by the way you manage in the heat and small space. Are you and DH planning on renting when you move?
Allie – the weight loss is great!!! Keep adding a bit of exercise and before you know it you’ll be in great shape. Heather and Pip (our exercise heroes) started small and added and added until they got to where they are today.
Machka - so glad you and DH are able to travel again…. I can “hear” the joy you have from being able to see family and to get a change of scenery
More thoughts for everyone, lots I don’t remember.
I participated in a craft fair this past weekend, what a bust. 2 days – 15 hours total time committed and made $50 - totally not ok. A group of 3 crafty friends and I did this a couple of years ago and decided to do it again, we did it at one of the other gals home, and I was completely unimpressed. The location is good, but the set up for showing stuff off was not good. And the gal said she would do signs and local advertising and failed at both. The other gals really want to do it again, so next year at my house. One day only and I will be advertising a ton! If I don’t make at least $100 I’ll not be doing it again.
The bigger news is that I am getting a roommate in a couple of weeks, long story but I am “taking in” a friend who is in need of a soft landing while he gets finances and life back in order. He’s paying rent (just a reasonable rate instead of the highway robbery levels in the SF Bay Area) and will be doing some chores and helping out. It is a short term gig for now, we agreed on 3 months as a trial and then we will see as time goes on. He comes with a dog, a real sweetie named Queenie, so my house has a dog again. Which I really missed. Queenie loves other dogs and we have it set up that I will be able to continue my dog sitting biz also.
Thinking of you all,
