LESS Alcohol ~ OCTOBER 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

Back from Biloxi. I did not stick to my guns. I drank 2 out of 3 days but back home now and AF last night and back on track. It is what it is.
AF = 26

Day 58 AF done and day 59 AF has arrived. Made it past my second hurdle, the birthday. I bought myself SeaGlass Pinot Grigio NA. Yes, it's overpriced juice but I was curious. It tasted like very watered down pinot grigio with no smell to it. Not a repeat BUT it's a good improvement over the crap NA wines on the market. At least I could taste the right grape varietal and it didn't taste like sweet apple juice mixed with table vinegar.
Did have my annual check up and TADA - I am GOOD! She is happy my enzymes came down, my blood sugar came down, and my LDL came down ever so slightly but it's apparently ok my total cholesterol is over the limit because I exercise and she wants the HDL to stay high. Weight down 10 lbs. since last year (I forgot about that). I don't need another liver scan as long as I am trending downward on all the biometrics. I left with no meds!
Make it a great AF day!!

Last night, I had two big glasses of the low alcohol wine I like.
Making a choice this morning for an AF night tonight — I am leaving for a Barre class now, always a fun (and hard) workout!
On Halloween, I will have some planned wine with our scary movie. It’s an annual tradition around here after handing out candy to the little monsters and princesses in our neighborhood. Then, lights out for some spooky fun!

What great news @globalhiker. ALL your hard work has really paid off. And a forgotten 10-pound loss was a bonus.
CONGRATS4 -
@womona sorry to hear you have to have your boat pulled. I would think they would let the boaters enjoy every luscious day they could on the water.
Thanks for the words about my weekend. Had I been even drinking slightly I know I would have reacted so totally different about everything. Being AF has taught me to bite down hard on my tongue and keep the lips sealed.5 -

Still busy. Had to sit down to rest my leg. I think my IT band is too tight. I probably need to roll my leg. 😕 No time for that.
No wine since last post. Been to the grocery store 3 or 4 times, thought about it, but stopped myself.
All the liver enzyme conversation is interesting. During the heaviest drinking period in my life, I was on a drug that require monthly blood draws for liver function because the drug could destroy my liver. You know, the doctor never told me there was anything to be concerned about nor that there wasn’t anything to be concerned about. Hmmmm… 🤔
YEESH!!! I am a little concerned your DR. did not give you better insight about your liver. Especially if they were doing monthly blood draws for a drug that caused issues.
What is the IT band for?4 -

You can plug your numbers in here. Obviously this does not replace anything your Dr has to say. I'll post this in the November link too.
Thanks @SunnyDays930 I should add this to our intro section for DECEMBER 20245 -

@SurferGirl1982 NEVER apologize for giving us to much informative information. We are sponges for it all.
You are doing fantastic.6 -

What is the IT band for?
The iliotibial, or IT, band is a long fibrous band of fascia tissue that runs from the outside of your hip down to the outside of your knee. It has a complex job description: it helps lift your leg to the front and to the side of your body, and it supports your knee during flexion and extension.
Unfortunately, my hip down to my knee is hurting badly, but the inside and outside of my ankle and up the outside of my calf is also hurting. The only thing I can think of is overuse from walking 2.5-3 miles a day or being on my feet cooking for long periods of time. I sit to work for 8-9 hrs a day which I’m sure doesn’t help because it’s not elevated or being stretched or anything.

Kinda gave up keeping track but this month has been about 50-50 which isn't awful but I know i can do better.8

I started drinking in my mid twenties, slowly at first as my husband always used to have a bottle of cider each night and slowly i started to have half a class which then became 1 pint a night by my thirties i was having a pint and a half a night some times i would be hung over by slowly my body got used to it then events like christmas and holidays it increased and by my forties i was having missed nights when i just didnt remember things but i slept and as it was stressful with my 2 sons who were ADHD and full on i kind of thought it was an escape. In my fifties i had moved on to red wine, husband started buying cartons each week and used to say its only 2 glasses but that increased to include 2 glasses of whisky, now i dont remember the ends of a night or i fall asleep on the settee.
Now at 62 have now started to only have 2 small glasses of wine and included 2 days of AF a week but its hard to reduce. Each day i wake up and promise myself i will change but i think its the stress of having my son who drinks massively and my husband who has cancer and drinks, my ADHD grandson who lives part-time with us, then my other son who constantly drops his kids round , two crazy dogs into the pot too, it all gets too much for me running around after everyone and trying to hold it together, i get to 1 am in the morning as husband doesnt sleep well due to his meds and i finally give in.
I however remain set that i wll change things maybe slowly but i will get there.
This month 20 days drinking 9 days AF so far
Sorry for the long post12 -
@annliz23 Hugs to you. It's a familiar story. Stick around and keep trying!
Flying out to to my son, DIL, and 4 grands in Arizona today to help my DIL with the 30 hour drive back. No drinking for me to finish out the month, so these will be my final numbers. Not too shabby even though I missed my sober October. This is going from a daily bottle+ of wine per day every day up until April 1st of this year. If I can do it, anyone can! Trust me!
October final numbers:
AF = 29
A = 28 -
Amazing results everyone. I am so proud of you.
AF - 45
A - never again

Day 59 AF done and Day 60 AF is here. I really wish I could say this is easy, it's gotten "easier" but it's not easy for me. I would still absolutely LOVE to take off on a month-long European vacation and drink local wines every day, as much as I want, without a worry and without counting.
Instead each day I get to deal with daily life "irritations" and unpredictability and bosses and the drinking husband who drinks too much, all without my wine to make the problems magically shrink. Instead, I manage by watching funny stuff on youtube to distract me and I still follow a drinking ritual of drinking a soda or fizzy water or NA drink before dinner.
My rational self did become stronger with being AF in a stretch. But crap, today my wine devil is asking me at 5 a.m.: When is this going to end?
All I know is not today, dear wine devil. Alcohol is a class 1 carcinogen, in the same class as all the really bad stuff, go look it up. It damages DNA and shortens telemeres too. I want long telemeres= longer life, anti-aging. Do I really want to self medicate myself with a class 1 carcinogen at my age that can give me cancer and make me look older? Don't I have enough problems already?
Wine devil response is: well, everything will kill you, toxins are everywhere.
Me: exactly why I need to control the risks I can. I want to lower my cancer risk and avoid as many toxins as possible to have a good life.
The wine devil conversation in my head abruptly ended. Looks like I will continue AF past day 60. Here we go!!10 -
Improved upon September dry days! I also kept limits in check with a 2 glass limit (but yes a few times over). That is huge for me. I’m finding I like feeling good in the morning!
For November, I’m going to place more emphasis and focus on losing 5 lbs by 1/25/25 which means caloric limits = less wine.

You've all been doing so well! I drank the last two days. But I plan to get serious. I plan on making November AF. Some may think that will be hard because of Thanksgiving. But my husband and I don't have any relatives close by, so it's just the two of us (and the cat 😺). My husband would like to see me quit drinking and he doesn't drink (or even suggest it) when I'm not drinking. He's the type that likes to have a few beers from time to time. But can leave it alone too.
@annliz23 Yes, your story is very familiar. Most of us can relate. You actually have three more AF days than I do this month. Keep it up!
@chicbuc Sorry that you didn't make your sober October. But you did surprisingly well. Are you going to try for sober November?
@globalhiker I know it can be tough. I wish I could be a normal drinker too. But it's never worked for me. I once went almost 4 months AF (118 days) back in 2021 & 2022. But I decided to drink and that was all she wrote. I figured that I had gone that long and that most of the damage had been reversed...labs came back good, everything looked good on the ultrasound and my endoscopy looked great according to my doctor. But once I drank, it quickly returned to daily drinking ☹️ It's sad that your husband still drinks. It would be so much easier if you were both on board.

Had wine last night, drank 1 glass too many though.
I felt unsettled yesterday (no other way to describe it), so I picked up my son from work and stopped by the store to get my wine on the way home. The man in front of us at the register paid for my wine which was very sweet of him.
By the time I got home, hubby was asleep in the living room. I called my mom because my dad is back in the hospital and talked to her for awhile while drinking my wine. I don’t remember what time I went to bed. It was later than normal, and I have had a headache all day. Not a horrible one, just enough to remind me why that 1 extra glass was not necessary.
I still went on my walk this morning, still doing laundry, and still working; so I’m still doing what I have to do. No real impediment to my day. Just a day with a headache.🤷🏻♀️9 -
@globalhiker Thank you for your post that reminded me that alcohol is a carcinogen. It is so easy to glamorize wine; indeed advertising does that for us on a daily basis. I need to remember to be grateful for my health and protective of it. At 61 I have more yesterdays than tomorrows and I need to keep that in mind when it comes to what I eat and drink.8

I didn't do well in the AF department this month - too much stress and too many things going on to add quitting drinking to them. I'm going to shoot for a very dry November though, see you all there!

31 AF days in October
Current streak 39 days AF
I check this thread all the time and read every word. Thanks for your honesty and thoughtful posts. It helps me so much. Happy Halloween!8 -
Happy Halloween my friends!
I won't be posting my AF days anymore because I stopped counting. I feel free and it's just awesome. You couldn't pay me to drink again. So many benefits not poisoning myself. I wish I would have stopped a long time ago but you can't change the past but you can shape your future!
have a great BOO day !

HAPPY 🎃 HALLOWEEN
October has proved to be a very successful month for me. I want to continue this path. Two drink days the first week, 3 drinks total.
Now on my 26th consecutive alcohol free day, sliding right over to November to add more days.

60 AF days done, today is AF day 61! Thank you, Team! This is not a solo effort by any means.
See you all in November. I reflected back to the 5 or so months AF I did perhaps it was Nov - April and I couldn't believe how the wine secretly and slowly crept back into my life full swing by August. Be on guard!9 -
