We heard from Edie yesterday that she took her exams on Monday, and had an interview, to get into the school that Max goes to. She thought she had done well, and seemed happy, but won't know for a while.
We keep out of the political stuff, but of course we are supportive to her. Her parents are hoping she gets a scholarship towards the fees, and I think, though I don't know, that the other grandparents are helping out. Edie is hoping for a 'all-rounder' scholarship. This morning she was up at 5.30 to go swimming.
We have organised for her to come over one afternoon on the 7/8th. Can't wait!

(OK, both of them are "my office" or "your office" when we speak to each other, but still...) When we moved here, it was labeled as a dining room, which we don't need, as we have a table in the kitchen. But English language room naming is so weird when you think about it.
A bedroom has a bed in it, a bathroom sometimes has a bathtub, sometimes not, but a toilet always has a toilet. But then there's a kitchen. Why not a "stove room?" Or a "sink room?" Then there are dining and living rooms, which have verbs instead of "table room" or "couch room." Which if we followed that train of thought would mean we'd have sleeping rooms, cooking rooms, pooping rooms, and so on. And then there's a "mud room," which doesn't fit any of it.
Living rooms, on the other hand, used to be "parlors" which comes from the French parlour to speak, which was generated from the monasteries, which had the one speaking room where monks who'd taken a vow of silence had leave to speak when absolutely necessary. So a parlour was a speaking room. Now it's a watching room or a reading room. We won't even talk about porches (from the Latin for passage), or verandas (from Hindi for railing) for the posh. And the word closet originally came from the Latin for "small," which opens up a whole 'nother can of worms. Such an odd language.
Thus endeth today's squirrel.
Later,
Love y'all,
Lisa
In Australia, the "living room" is called a "lounge room".
Bathroom is where you bathe, shower, or wash your hands etc.
Toilet is where you go to the toilet. I think in the majority of houses these rooms are separate, but in modern houses, like our new one, the toilets are in the bathrooms. The toilet is also called a WC (water closet) or loo or occasionally dunny.
Our garden is our yard. We have a front garden (an area with horrible grass-like stuff which I will be removing) and back garden (also an area with horrible grass-like stuff and a bunch of other odd plants growing about, which we are converting into a fruit and veg area)
Wizard of Oz and Wicked
I have a DVD of Wizard of Oz and have watched it many times. Among my favourite movies. I think it's one of my father's favourite movies too. Whenever I think about it, I start singing, "If I were King of the Forest!"
I saw Wicked as a play here in Tasmania a few years ago. It was great!!
Christmas
As usual, we're keeping it low key.
We won't likely get gifts for each other. After all, we're trying to declutter and get rid of stuff in our new place.Snowflake1968 wrote: »Machka - I used to hold things in too long and then explode, thankfully I haven’t gotten to that point in a few years. I probably still hold it in too long but I’m better at letting it out.
Barbie - I don’t think we can fix anyone but ourselves. I don’t know why I thought DH would follow through on the ornaments this year. He hasn’t wanted to do them the last couple years. I thought that since it was his idea this year to do markets he would have I guess.
Tracey in Edmonton
That's how I would start the conversation with him.
"On or about Tuesday 5 October, whilst we were eating dinner, you suggested that we should do the markets. That statement led me to believe that you were going to help me with the ornaments we would offer for sale at the market. I realise now that I should have asked more questions then, so I'll try to remedy the situation by asking now. Do you really want to do the markets this year? Do you want to help me with the ornaments? Don't worry ... if you don't want to do the markets and don't want to help with the ornaments, that's OK. We don't have to do any of it. In fact, the Christmas season might be more relaxing without. But if you do want to do the markets, what is your plan?"
It's almost funny ... sometimes my husband insists he wants to do something but I have a feeling he doesn't really want to and one way to tell is that when I ask him directly, he'll say, "We'll do it because you want to" and he'll stick to that through me asking the question in several different ways. Finally I'll say, "Stop trying to make me happy! Tell me what YOU want!" And there we are having a minor argument about each trying to make the other happy.

John said he would make his gorgeous chicken stew tonight. V happy about that! He has to pop out to buy celery, but we have everything else in the house. It's so comforting this weather. (Raining and grey again).
I am having my hair trimmed this afternoon. Allie, yours looks great!
I will call into the butcher, (almost next door), to get some gluten free sausages to make gf stuffing balls soon for Christmas. I'm going to make double quantities as there are 7 of us at the table. I don't think Bea will eat any, but the rest of us will, and they are great cold.
John has finished in the bathroom, so on with the painting!

Heard yesterday that my DDIL , Dr Jessamy Hibberd, is writing a new book about 'Overthinking'. That's something I used to be very guilty of, but I seem to have got better about it. Thank goodness, as it can be crippling.
She's going to Dubai next year to give talks on all her books. All expenses paid by the publisher! She could have taken the family along, but it's term time, so she's taking her parents instead. Wow!
She's written a lot of books, but the main ones are 'The Imposter Syndrome', 'How to Overcome Trauma', and this latest, that she hasn't finished yet. So three lectures in total.
She's very excited about the swimming pool at the hotel!
I must admit to being a bit jealous, but I'm very excited for her.
She and my son have signed up to be Joint Chairman of their cycle club. As if they haven't got enough to do! Last night they were hosting dinner for the departing chairman to get all the gen.
Good luck to them!

Another busy week and we're only halfway through.
5 days of work this week, but I'm working from home on Friday partly because this Friday is my work from home day and partly because there's a metro strike on Friday.
On Monday evening we had a brain injury association AGM.
On Tuesday the memory foam mattress toppers I got for us arrived so I adjusted each bed and fixed them into position with yoga blocks so that the curtains won't get scrunched. Then I put the mattress toppers on and redressed each bed.
Last night was our first night with our new memory foam mattress toppers. I felt like I should have taken today off as a mattress topper test day! My husband said he woke up with less shoulder and hip pain, and I woke up with less hip pain. I've been having all sorts of issues with my right hip, but this morning was better.
Tonight I have started getting things ready for the cycling event we're organising on the weekend. There are stacks of food and other supplies around the house now and I've just found clipboards and things.
And happily, I finally found my mouthguard! A new one would have cost me over $800!!

Morning, my chicklets,
Life is good in Arkansas, a little chilly outside, warm cat on my lap, husband nearly out of the house for his last day of work before four days off.
Today is just a quick nip out to the store at its opening moment to get some eggs and celery, the two things I didn't get on yesterday's list, and laundry all morning. Oh - and putting together pecan pie bars and getting them baked, as they have to refrigerate overnight. Not a terribly stressful day. I'll put pinto beans in a pot to soak overnight before I go to bed, and then get them going in the morning tomorrow to simmer slowly.
Tracey - Love that description of the English language. I think I'd get along really well with your daughters.
Allie - The haircut looks great. Do you like having shorter hair to deal with? I don't think I'll ever go back to longer hair. My sister even cut her hair, and it was almost three feet long. Got tired of dealing with it all.
Heather - What a wonderful thing for your DDIL! The only thing I know of the UK publishing scene is Alistair working with Lionel on his autobiography in "As Time Goes By." I've seen all nine seasons of it, at least three times over. Does Jessamy still see patients? Loved the pic of the tree out your bedroom window, as well, but forgot to say it at the time.
Ah, there goes Corey, time to gently shoo Egg off my lap and get started on a couple things.
Later, my lovelies,

Sue - so sorry to hear about your continued electrical woes. Hope you can get an electrician out quickly to replace that worn breaker. Was a bad breaker the reason your furnace kicked off?
Mo and those of you who recommended the Land's End pants - mine finally arrived and they fit perfectly. The material is a little bit thinner than I'm used to, but I think they'll be just fine, especially in warmer weather. Land's End got it right.
Lisa - I'm ready for a nap hearing about your preparations for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Hope the visit with the Ortho doc is fruitful.
Debbie - when I drove to the feed store yesterday I saw several of those blow up balloons in someone's yard. You got a great deal! I wonder if we'll see a lid on the price of food anytime soon. I still manage to get good deals on plenty of things at my local Safeway if I shop the sales - I get the Rewards points plus in-store special pricing too. Between that and being able to price things at Walmart ahead of my shopping trip, I'm able to keep the food budget in line. If I had others in the household to feed who liked snacks and processed foods, I think it would be a different story.
Heather - Crossing fingers Edie gets into Max's school and secures a nice scholarship. I bet your son is excited to head to the US and meet with the folks from the Bourbon company. Has he been to the US before? Your DIL is a prolific writer and the new book looks intriguing - I am so good at overthinking.
My DH was so good at cutting through the chatter in my head and just simplifying whatever I was hashing around. "Just do _______". It used to bug me that he was so quick to get the point, and I used to think he didn't want to listen to me jabbering on and on, which was probably true too.
Allie - love that haircut! And I see Delia is in competition with SMiles in the smiley face category. Let's see.... what's her new handle? What about Delightful? I was going to say Delicious but people might think I'm a cannibal, .
Pip - that's a neat tour of the cabin. You and your friend will have a blast. When is it again?
Annie - thinking about you and hope you are feeling better!
I'm going to pop a beef roast in the crockpot today with a little spaghetti sauce and Italian spices. I found a bag of frozen chicken ravioli in the freezer and will bake that tomorrow with the rest of the spaghetti sauce. I've eaten so much ham and turkey recently I needed a change.
Better close for now. I started this yesterday. Sorry I've missed some of you - will try to catch up today.

Good morning beautiful ladies!
I'm feeling much better, but a little overwhelmed at chores piling up. Plus Dad has been clingy lately. He asks me what he is supposed to be doing, as if I am the entertainment coordinator! Well maybe I am, because I got him a new jigsaw puzzle and he is distracted again. Yesterday he didn't charge his hearing aids so he was here and bored all day. I tried to post and got interrupted over and over.
Today the electrician is coming to do a safety inspection thing.
Sue warm hugs to you! My heat was out for weeks many years ago and it was miserable.
Machka glad you found your mouth guard Yay!
I have a three inch foam queen mattress topper that I used for camping. Very comfy! But heavy to move around.
I'm one who keeps quiet more than I should. I doubt my feelings, and wait to see if I feel the same later on, but then the moment passes and I forget about it. I don't feel like I'm bottling up my emotions, more like they aren't strong enough to voice. Something to work on in my next relationship, because voicing my feelings to my Dad is pointless.
Anyway, have a great day! May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

Last year I read a book called "At Home" by Bill Bryson. It's a very long book in which he recounts the history and origin of all the rooms in his house including a lot about how the rooms got to be called what they are called now. It's a long read but filled with interesting information.
Jake is going out to lunch with a friend today which will allow him restaurant food without me and allow me a few hours with him gone. Of course, the dogs will be here so it won't be "me time".
Allie, great haircut and darling grandkids.
Just to be clear, I'm not opposed to speaking up and asking someone to do or not do something, I just don't agree with the supposed value of "venting". Not venting is not the same as bottling up emotions. Many people take stock of resentments by writing them down, looking to see what's affected in their lives and then finding their own part in the whole mess. I get nowhere thinking about how someone else can change. The only person I can change is me.

Hello Ladies! I missed you all. I read quickly through the post. I wanted to post on Monday and Tuesday, but I felt down and questioned humanity on Monday. On Tuesday, my Rose was quite demanding. I took care of a boy who just got out of Peds ICU. This 7-year-old boy was intubated and placed on a vent. This poor boy was beaten by his 17-year-old brother. This boy suffered a skull fracture and subdural hematoma, with some bleeding noted and TBI. The parents were devastated, for the boy was mild-mannered and loved to hide in a quiet place to read. Two doors down, there is a baby that is only 3 months old and has brain damage because her mother and father beat her. Forensics is getting called in. That poor baby wanted to be held all night, to be reassured. We all took turns holding her. I don't understand people.
I was so exhausted mentally and physically that I didn't work out, and I feel awful about that. I haven't slept well during my stretch, and DH wants me to watch a show simultaneously. Working out helps me sleep and decreases stress. I will work out today. I will take Rebecca's advice and journal my feelings about DH. My friend called me, and I told her that DH wants to know how much money I will get to retire because he wants me to pay for a place for Julia and Horace. I am done with Julia, for I had to pay $20,000.00 for Julia to go to boarding school. So, any "Extra money" will go toward travel and living. I have done my part. I even paid for her to go to college; she dropped out and got the money to spend with her boyfriend. She needs to grow on her own. She will not work hard if we give it to her. As for Horace, I will work hard to help him, but he needs to meet me halfway. It is a part of adulting.
DS has an interview to assist the teacher with a creative writing class. I need to find out how that went.
Carol, DS- Horace Alexander, is the only one I gave birth to and lived. Alexandra died in our arms a few hours later. My co-workers held her when I fell asleep, and Horace had to go and let our dog at the time, Rusty. The doctor from the NICU came and checked on her. I told the doctor I knew we could do nothing to save her. We learned the last lesson, and that was that in the subsequent pregnancy, I sewed up my cervix early on at 11 weeks, and that is what worked. The miscarriage before her, we learned that I needed progesterone. Julia, we adopted shortly after we lost Alexandra.
Lisa, thank you for reminding me to tell the "Gas Station Story."
I went to Kroger to fill up my tank. I saw an older woman who looked like she was in a gang and had gold teeth. I told myself that I was stereotyping her. Rose was in the back seat. I thanked Rose for watching my bag and then looked through my bag to find my wallet. Suddenly, that woman was out of her car and behind me, asking for $10.00. I screamed because she scared me. I told her I don't keep cash on me, and she drove off. I had a bad feeling about her. She didn't have trouble driving her car. She said she needed gas money. She didn't say excuse me, and she was in my personal space.
Pip, I love the new addition to your patio.
Welcome to the group, Rosalind!

I'm sure nearly everyone is super busy but I'm taking a chance here some of you will read this and respond.
Do any of you still go to the same hairdresser/stylist that you have gone to for years?
Like Barbie, I started cutting my own hair during the pandemic but need to find someone to "shape it" even though I'll recut it when I get home. So far, no luck. Might have to try Walmart or Great Clips.
Seems like over the past decade, when I'd find one who knew how to deal with my shorter curly/wavy hair plus could give me early morning appointments, something would come up that they'd take time off or cut back clients because of the kids, change their hours or weren't taking new clients.
My hair is getting thinner and finer like my mom's was, otherwise I'd love to let it grow out and put it in a ponytail.

Mo - Holy guacamole, I would have screamed too.
Lanette - I just finally found a young woman at Sports Clips in town who cut my hair correctly and well. Been back once. That's usually it for the same reasons you said. But I'll check in on her in six or eight weeks to see if she's still there. And who cares if your hair is thin? It's your hair, do what you like, grow it out if you want.
Took a break between chores, going to swan my happy behind off to the store and get eggs and celery, and come back and get some baking done. Saw this and thought someone might could use a lift this morning...
Apparently, his name is Squirrely Dan. (Remember Steely Dan? 😸)

I've just come back from the hairdresser. She did a good job. I save a few pounds by having a 'wet cut', not a blow-dry, but she does more or less ruffle dry it before I step out into the cold. I just had an inch off. I do my own colour.
I've been going to the local salon around the corner for six years, with just one change of actual stylist. Both have been fine.
They gave me a Christmas card with 15% off my next appointment in Jan/Feb.
Lisa - Yes, Jess still has clients. She sees them three days a week on Zoom. The other days are spent writing up notes, admin, and writing books. She is very attentive to the children and does a lot for them, starting late and finishing early etc. My son does nearly all the cooking, though she does make the kids easy stuff. She orders food and milk for delivery and has a cleaner. She generally supervises the diary. My son does a lot of the driving around, and takes Edie swimming at 6 in the morning. He goes for a run.
She is able to charge a huge hourly rate, which would make your eyes bleed, but I guess she's worth it. She does quie a bit of media, talks, etc. She is much the higher earner. I admire her grit and determination. She has worked hard for her self-belief. She would be the first one to say it didn't come naturally.

I used my new metallic acrylic paints that John bought me, but it was hard to get depth of colour. Just for a change, I decided to do a 'realistic abstract'. Not my usual style. I'm not entirely happy, but it was an experiment on a smallish canvas.

Yes love my hair, and hairdresser,we have been dear friends for years..and since i wont see her until after the new year gave her a nice Christmas bonus..
Only think with it being this short is i have to wash it everyday.
Dan and I going to see Lion King tonight..
Thats his Christmas present, and money towards his 40th birthday..which is Han 2nd
Carmine I will give a 50.00 Amazon gift card .I don't think she deserves much more than that from me as,she doesn't call, text or even bother acknowledging me.5 -
I love my hairdresser. I’ve been using her for several years. She knows how to cut my naturally curly hair AND she’s the first person to successfully straighten my hair to where it stays straight after I walk out of the salon. I’ve colored my own hair for years. Now that I’m transitioning to gray, she is going my color.

Mo - how heartbreaking that you have little patients who are the result of family domestic violence. Is this normal or have things ramped up recently? I remember when I was at 911 I would pull tapes for court - so hard to listen to children calling in to report a parent in the process of injuring another family member. Some of them brought me to tears. The racket in the background and the child often sobbing. The dispatchers making this a priority call and making sure to send 2 officers to the scene.
And you have to deal with the aftermath. Sending many (((hugs))) your way.
Also, I really miss my DH but NOT the discussions about family finances and spending. Maybe I was too controlling with the purse strings, but in the end it paid off since I didn't have to worry about the stress of not having enough $$ in case he'd need to be in a care facility for a while as his memory loss worsened.
About hair: I neglected to mention... I have the female version of "male pattern baldness" setting in. I noticed it starting couple during my ponytail years. The tension of the ponytail pulled out hairs on the top front of my head and they weren't quick about growing back, so now I keep it short and more "puffy" and try to avoid stress in that region.
I could go the Minoxidil/Rogaine route but that's just one more thing to fuss with.
About the feed store: Yesterday I picked up some high protein chicken "scratch" at the feedstore - cracked corn, wheat, peas, oats, soybeans - and have put some on the deck rail. I currently have turtle doves, blue jays, Oregon juncos, a rosy finch and some type of blackbirds (yuk) out there having a meal. Price was $.43 a pound.
The guy at the feed store, K, is in his early 50's, just broke up with his long time GF according to T who is a friend of his. If I was 20 years younger, I'd be at the feed store every day! As he was helping me yesterday, he was so nice and I thought his parents did a great job raising a friendly kid who was also a good business man. Bet he treats his mom like a queen.
Interesting fact - his dad passed away this summer. They buried him in the family plot right on the farm. K and his brother and brother in law dug the grave themselves and handled everything, as was probably done 100 years ago. Afterward, there was a big potluck and celebration of Dad's life. In the photos K posted, they all had smiles on their faces. What a loving family and great send-off.
Ok ladies, beef is in the crockpot and smelling great.

I never found anyone who could manage my hair. It is dead straight, no body, thin and fine. It doesn't curl unless I glue each curl and then it's a sticky mess. So I stopped fighting it. I just didn't want to spend an hour a day fixing and cleaning my hair. I let it hang straight and I stopped cutting it because that was also an unrewarding hassle. Long hair really isn't any trouble for me. It stays in place behind my shoulders mostly.
My mom used to say a lot of unkind things about how I might be attractive if I only had curly hair. Bah humbug. I try to think I am a wonderful person no matter what my hair does.
Yes it's still a trigger for me. Especially since I really want to wash it before Thanksgiving dinner but I can't leave Dad alone so I'm kind of stuck.

MO ~ Your job would break my heart. Prayers for you!
Lanette ~ How nice that you are keeping the birds fed as the weather gets colder and their food stores lessen.
Heather ~ I am so happy for you being close to your son's family. It has been good for them and for you and John.
Annie ~ I would love to see a photo of you in your long hair. I bet it is pretty.
Hair: I have a nice head of hair that does a lot better when I make myself get it trimmed. Last week I got a short bob cut. I am trying to find blonde shades of dye that will make the white around my face look less obvious. When I take time to blow dry it it looks pretty good.
My son's family is coming soon to bring the old Christmas tree up from the basement. Last year I didn't even try to decorate it but think I will this year. We will take them to our favorite Mexican restaurant for dinner.

Aside from myself, as an adult, I don't think I have been to the same hairdresser twice. All different.
About once a year I get mine cut to waist length.
Mine varies between straight in low humidity and ringlets in high humidity. Right now there is high humidity and mist so my hair is like a lion's mane.

Definitely in the ‘If you don’t ask you don’t get’ camp. I tend towards positive encouragement, and planting ideas in DH’s head, letting him mull them over, then thinking they’re own his idea 😂 It works a treat.
Early grocery shopping this morning, then Psychology before lunch. I got 3 small Xmas Gifts for daughters and granddaughter. Crystal rainbow makers with little glass angels. The vendor gave me a pretty freebie because I bought 3 of them.
We have had to scrape snow off the windscreen for the last 2 days, but it’s been dry and sunny during the day.
