Sugar addiction

Hello, I am so happy 😊 to be here. I have a problem staying away from sweets. The older I get the harder it is. Been trying to lose weight also. My problem is self control. I need lots of help in that category. Any ideas would be helpful.

For me the best thing to do is just not buy the stuff I will overeat. If you get an urge that you can't overcome by a small portion and be done with it.

I also find it the longer I eat relatively healthy food all the time the more I enjoy it. Changing buying habits is the biggest hurdle for me.

For me, making it a point to eat more fruit helped reduce my cravings for more calorie- dense sweets like candy and baked goods.

I first heard the suggestion from a registered dietitian, who recommended 3 fruit servings daily to start. I tried it. As I recall, it took a small number of weeks for the effect to kick in, so did take some will power at first. But it worked for me.

I'm sure it wouldn't work for everyone - no single eating strategy ever does, I think - but I've read some others here say it helped them, too. Might be worth a try?

Wishing you success, no matter what route you choose!

I tackled my sugar addiction the same way I quit smoking years ago. I quit cold turkey, gave up all added sugar and while the first two weeks felt like a special kind of hell, ever since it's easier.

I am not a doctor or a nutritionist, but sugar seems to work the same way as other addictive substances do. You eat it and you want more. When I still smoked, I walked in the night to the gas station to buy cigarettes, because I couldn't stand the thought of being without them. Sugar works in my case the same way. If it's around I will eat like chipmunk. I cannot just have one piece.

I had to give up sugar because my last blood work showed I was already pre-diabetic, right on the border to have Type 2 diabetes which starts at an A1C of 5.7 and mine was 5.6.

    Big wake-up call!

Today is day 88 on my new lifestyle. I have lost 32.6 pounds and my glucose numbers are normal.

Nobody can help you, you have to get it under control yourself. If you are able to enjoy candy and sweets in moderation, go for it. If you know you can't behave yourself quit the habit.

I eat 2 pieces of fruit a day (in my oatmeal in the morning) and a pear or orange as a snack. I use maple syrup in my oats and it seems this satisfies my sweet tooth enough to not bother me :-)

I am very determined and realize now that I have to change my ways for good. It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle change. I even founded a group and found like-minded people like me who want to get healthier and lose weight (without weight loss injections. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/147326-determined-losers-on-a-mission-its-not-a-diet-its-a-lifestyle-change

I wish you success! Tackle the sugar monster :)
