LESS Alcohol ~ DECEMBER 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

So..... December is not starting with the bang that I planned.
12/1 was the "bottle open" syndrome. @SparkSpringtime69 mentioned something similar. So I had a couple of glasses to finish the bottle.
12/2 Yesterday started perfectly. I went to the gym for a good workout, but it trailed downhill from there. I've got to practice the art of saying "no". Husband wanted to stop for lunch/fast food. I got a chicken sandwich vs the beef combo that I usually get and a small fry. This restaurant has this to die for caramel salted cake, and I don't even like cake, so he added one of those to our menu. I took a couple of bites (it is good) and pushed the rest his way. Calories maxed for the day.... not good. Now, it's late afternoon, and he wants to make pomegranate sours. Angel on one shoulder, devil on the other. Devil wins....
12/2 Today - I will exercise discipline and practice saying "NO".

@Missmay ~ thanks for sharing your story. I'm not sure that I read it before. I agree, it's the real people with real struggles that helps the journey. While I'm still drinking, with no desire to eliminate it completely, I am drinking much less than before joining this group. I am guilty of disappearing when I can't say I've succeeded, but I'm going to show up in December!
@NonnieDoiron ~ Don't take a pass on your birthday, especially a milestone one. Do something, even if it's simply and quiet.... Prayers for your MIL.
@womona ~ awesome to stop after one glass of wine!
@surfergirl1982 ~ sorry you're having an issue with another user on MFP. One thing I love about this group...everyone if very respectful of each other and there is no judgement what so ever.
Hang in there....
@xbowhunter ~ congrats on our success. You are crushing it!!

6 AF days in a row (started Thanksgiving) - trying to be AF until Christmas Eve. Gonna be tough!8

MIL had her MRI yesterday, and now we wait to see when the dr will schedule the surgery.
Everyone seems to be starting off December with great numbers and/or attitude. The struggle is real right now for me. It’s taking a lot of effort for me not to go to the store. Friday isn’t too far away, and I know I’ll have to ask my husband to avoid the wine aisle because I don’t need it magically appearing this month.
My son has a competition on Saturday, and I have decided to stay home this time. We’re not sure when MIL’s surgery is, and I can’t leave my daughter home alone. So, I’m going to stay home, watch the live stream, and might bake some bread… I’ve seen a few recipes I want to try. We’ll see how I feel Saturday morning.8 -
Thinking of you, @NonnieDoiron It's frustrating not to be able to have the magic words to help you, but just know we're all rooting for you and we're here to listen anytime!
We went do dinner with my son's family last night before they headed back to Arizona this morningI had the wine devil in my ear for hours before we arrived, but I ordered water. I'm glad I was able to stick to my guns because I would have been so disappointed in myself if I had caved. Plus, the calories would have added up even more after all the chips and guacamole I ate!
I have been content not seeing them too often since they moved (5 times in 2 years) but this visit has really made me miss them. I think I'll plan a trip out to stay for a few days sometime in the next few months.

@globalhiker your words to me yesterday were so moving. I thank you ever so much for them. Yet more than anything I am so happy that I could give you courage, strength and insight to knock that devil off your shoulder when you needed it. You are so treasured. Many hugs.5
-
@NonnieDoiron thinking of you with all those weights of waiting. And congrats on your raise at work.
@chicbuc nice dodge on the dinner wine.
@tmbg1 LOOK at you girl with 6 ALCOHOL FREE DAYS in a row!!!
@SurferGirl1982 my fingers are crossed for you to achieve that AF day you so deserve. I thought that problem with the other MFP user had been resolved? there are just some people that have to stir the pot just to get attention. This person sounds like that.
@itladyee I hear you on the salted caramel. I would eat old dirty cardboard smeared with it.My husband brings home sample containers of salted caramel gelato from work, and it does not last the night. great job on getting to the gym.
@Michieb125 I am celebrating your 2 year anniversary on here this month, even if you did not start posting for another two months. Thank you for being a part of our LESS family.
@SparkSpringtime69 I hope things are becoming a bit better after all you have endured with you SIL passing. Healing takes time.
@Womona deep breath for you at this time of year. Boating, tennis and such is only suspended until better weather comes back.
@RubyRed427 you are the star on the top of my tree.

60 day milestone today for me without nagging alcohol devil.
12 -
Good morning my LA friends.
AF days - 80
Almost at 90 days AF. My original goal was 90 days that will occur on Friday Dec 13th but I will keep going through the holidays and beyond as a challenge for myself.
Stay strong my friends!9 -
-
3 months and 3 days AF done. Today will be an AF day. Last night I watched a youtube show called Sober Again... and there are many in this series but I really connected with yesterday's episode about after being sober for awhile and "when should you start drinking again".
The response was: you've spent all this time and effort running towards the better version of yourself, why would you want to go to back to the bad version of yourself, the one that you've worked so hard to run away from?
Have a great day running towards the better version of you!9 -
@NonnieDoiron, I'm sending you strength and encouragement to handle everything on your plate. It's nice that you will be able to livestream your son's competition, some days I LOVE technology
@chicbuc ~ great job on kicking that wine devil to the curb!!
@missmay ~ nicely done 60 days!! congratulations!!!
@tmbg1 ~ keep it going!!!

Already 4 days into December and we know Christmas will be here in a flash. Congrats to those who are starting off great with their personal LA goals.
I’m hosting a holiday dinner tomorrow night for some longtime friends and will have some planned wine with these light drinkers. They will drive home so anticipate they will have very little. But I had unplanned wine last night while I finished decorating the house!
It was like a deep seated neurological message and response to putting up holiday decorations. It was the strangest thing. I was fully aware of what “I said I would NOT do” but went with the pleasure feeling instead and did anyway. Finished the open bottle of wine. Today I will be more aware of how to live out my intentions.
Today is a new day - some exercise and to bed early!7 -
@SurferGirl1982 ...don't you DARE ditch us because of a Grinch on another site. Yeah, I snooped on one site that was just full of folks complaining about no friends, and disappearing "newsfeeds" [??} No sympathy, no support. And I concluded that I wouldn't want to be their friend either ...LOL.
Whether you are ready to quit the alcohol entirely or just cut way back, you will do it when your mind and body are ready.
I'm really good at quitting for a few months or years, but the wine devil keeps bringing me back to try for moderation. And I fail at that. Every. Single. Time.
No drinking during my Pig Pickin' Weekend except for my annual mason jar full of homebrewed moonshine. Too busy having fun...and keeping close to the bonfire. It's not usually so cold at the end of November...some years are shorts weather. Sunday morning breakfast was mincemeat pie washed down with a pot of black coffee at dawn while wearing my ancient fur coat by the fire. Her name is Myrtle. BTW. We are both 78.
Thanks @globalhiker for the bolded part of your last post. Should tattoo that on my corkscrew....😂💙💛♥️6 -

About time you got in here woman LOL Your bon fire sounds nice, so glad to hear your having FUN. Life is too short.6 -
@SurferGirl1982 geez, what are we in, 7th grade????? I remember you mentioning a run in with that other person a few weeks ago. Any way to block her or not see her posts? How frustrating. Welp, she did self identify as “selfish and self-centered.” When people tell you who they are, believe them.
At any rate, so glad you’re sticking with us! I feel the same way- none of you are “internet strangers” , but friends all on the same journey.

I wound up having 3 glasses of wine last night, but the party went late into the night, so I didn’t get wasted. Tonight was 1.5 glasses. Not my best. Tomorrow is a new day!6

Tonight I pulled all the old broken lights off my Christmas wreath and mantle garland and restrung them with new lights. I was very proud of myself for not putting it off any longer. Maybe I will make that bread on Saturday if I can keep this kind of momentum. 😉
Today, I got a call from a coworker who has been doing what I do for 2 years (I just started in June) asking me for help with some of the most basic stuff. I don’t know how he has been in this position for 2 years and still doesn’t know how to use the company’s administrative portal. Anyway, it looks like I’ll be on his speed dial now because I was able to show him a few tricks to help him out.
MIL spoke to her pulmonologist today because her oxygen saturation keeps dropping below 90 unless she’s on her oxygen that the doctor didn’t want her using. The doctor told her to stay on the oxygen. But every time she came out of her room, she didn’t have it on (her line is long enough to go to the kitchen… pretty long). She doesn’t follow doctors’ orders well, but it’s not my life. So, I can’t do anything about it.
Haven’t gone for a walk since Saturday. Really need to get out there. Not just for my health and exercise, but to pick up all the dang trash! I don’t understand why people litter. Do they get a high from it? Is there something wrong with throwing their fast food bags, takeout containers, soda cans, water bottles, beer cans, liquor bottles, used and unused condoms, douche bottles, dirty diapers, over-the-counter HIV test kits, etc in their own trash cans when they get home? (Yes, I’ve picked up all those things… with my trash grabbers, not my hands! 🤢) Why do they have to throw it in our yards? So irritating, but it makes me feel better to pick it up knowing that I’m helping my neighbors (especially the elderly) get the trash out of their yards and trying to be a good steward of what God gave us… too bad I can’t stop judging those who drive by me and wondering if I’m picking up their trash!😡
About to head to bed shortly. Good night all.6 -
@forestdweller1 I LOVE this, and we should all remember this when we feel like we're failing. "Whether you are ready to quit the alcohol entirely or just cut way back, you will do it when your mind and body are ready."
@globalhiker Words of wisdom to remember!! "you've spent all this time and effort running towards the better version of yourself, why would you want to go to back to the bad version of yourself, the one that you've worked so hard to run away from?"
@NonnieDoiron Those walks must make you feel so accomplished. I wish people were more considerate.
@Womona Good job moderating!! That's a win!
@SurferGirl1982 Hahaha @ the image of shorts and a parka! Hang in there and just keep on pondering. It will come.
@itladyee Good to see you here, too!
@ MissMay Great streak! I'll bet that feels awesome!
@xbowhunter Love your streak as well!
We (my son and I work in the same office for my SO which is his dad) had a bit of a late night at work, so I got lazy after I got dinner ready and didn't work out last night. I went to bed around 9:30 and up early, and I finally got my work out in this morning. Now to try to get a habit started again. I feel so much better, physically and emotionally, when I get a work out in 4-5 times a week...even if it's just a walk. No wine or thoughts of wine last night

It is soooo frustrating when our elders don’t follow medical advice, or take care of themselves in general (and hey, I guess that happens at any age). I find it extremely hard to adopt the “not my circus, not my monkeys” attitude, but for self preservation, it’s something we have to do.
As for the trash, OMG do I feel this! I am on a main road near a stop sign, and for some reason the approach to a stop sign makes people think it’s all right to throw their soda cans and cigarette butts out the window! Gak! Mercifully, I have not had to deal with condoms and used medical tests, and that is arguably worse!3 -
My weight loss journey is feeling like my golf game…. I get better at putting, and my drives go to hell. Try to improve my short game, and my putting sucks again.
I concentrate on logging and moderating my food and alcohol intake, and exercise gets blown off for the week. I commit to attending all my exercise classes, wake up late and cancel them all (I’ve done that many times this week). I stay on top of putting away all the things out in the house where they don’t belong, and I stop tracking my budgeting app. It’s like my brain can handle only so much tracking and diligence! Something always falls by the wayside. Anyone else experiencing this?2 -
Well, it's not working. I think it's creature of habit, routine. I worked Tuesday and Wednesday and it's just reflex, come home, start dinner, pour that glass of wine.
Today is not a work day so .....I will focus (crap, but its football Thursday). I wish I could enjoy the NA wines, but I like reds and I haven't found a good one. Instead I was successful substituting the 5 calorie juices...(so Charissa, just do it!)
At any rate, I am thinking about revisiting some of the resources posted earlier on.

@Michieb125 ~ I think you just described that "habit/routine" that I just talked about.
@NonnieDoiron ~ oh my, that's a lot of yucky trash!! Do you think people are intentionally tossing their trash or could it be a "wind" thing? It's been particular windy here and on trash day....everyone's trash is in the street. Now granted, I haven't seen some of the stuff that you mentioned! Can the situation be reported to the city...not sure they would actually do anything about it....
@forestdweller1 ~ quite timely and @chicbuc for calling it out!! "Whether you are ready to quit the alcohol entirely or just cut way back, you will do it when your mind and body are ready."
Off to the gym
Have a great LA day!

We’ve had birthday parties, family visits and Thanksgiving and now my holiday party is tonight. It’s been pretty busy around here. Glad this weekend and next week is going to be calmer, fingers crossed. I want to focus on the peace of the Advent season too!
@Womona - when I am trying to juggle numerous things it’s always harder for me to track consistently too. Luckily we can find our way back to homeostasis!! You will!
@globalhiker - love this……Our time and efforts should be honored, and you are such a great example of what that means.
@chicbuc - wow, so true when I/we look back at how and why I/we started this LA journey. We can tell when we’ve been ready and also not quite ready.
Hello @forestdweller1!! Glad to see you here!
Off to the gym for some me time then I’ll get cooking.
May you find your best resolve just for today.5 -

YES!!! This happens to me regularly! I try, but things just get in the way it seems. Every time I vow not to miss a walk, a million things will happen at work and I have to work through my designated walk time, or I’ll have some kind of pain, or my husband planned something else for us, or any number of things. I’ve just learned that I’m going to just have to do well on the days I do well and the rest will work itself out… I hope.🙏🏻

I wish it were the wind. It’s a combination or litter bugs and contractors that don’t tarp their loads or throw trash in the bed of their truck and it just blows out.
It’s all over our area. Littering in this area just seems to be the thing to do. Streets are just covered. I live in the county, so the city won’t do anything and they haven’t done anything in town either. The county recently passed a law that says all trucks must be tarped when carrying loads, but people don’t do it. And, the sheriff deputies don’t enforce it. We don’t even have regular patrol on our street. We’ve lived here for 6 years, and I’ve only seen a patrol car 3 times.
Every time I go for a walk I pick up at least a half a kitchen trash bag of trash. I was surprised that today was only 1 full bag after not having walked since Saturday!

@SurferGirl1982 we put up lights every year. As much as my husband hates climbing a ladder and getting on the roof, he likes the lights too. I refuse to decorate until after Thanksgiving because I firmly believe each holiday should be celebrated in its time. I hate seeing Christmas stuff before Halloween in the stores! One holiday at a time! LOL
Here’s my fireplace with the garland I replaced the lights in last night as well as my husband asleep on the floor. LOL
I grew up with tv commercials about not littering and the message being preached at school. My mother would’ve kicked my butt if I threw something out of the car! My kids know that littering is bad, too.
I’ve seen the “oxygen purses”. I suggested one when she initially got the oxygen after her last hospital stay. I can’t remember why she couldn’t use or get that type of equipment. It may have been something to do with her insurance. I stopped asking, making suggestions, and for the most part worrying about it. If she doesn’t use her oxygen and suffocates because her oxygen saturation drops too low, then that’s on her. I can only try to be helpful and concerned for so long before I decide that it’s just not worth the effort or anger. She’s either going to do it or not. I just hate to see how it affects my husband.
Anyway… still wine free.

Yes! me. I'm ditching tracking weight. All the micro-tracking, bye-bye. Makes me want to snack and drink. I am also not checking retirement investment finances till Jan., otherwise I get stressed. Dec. is too busy since I still need to buy presents for 5 more people and get a zillion things prepared for work since I am covering for the bosses during the holiday weeks. I need to zero in on "the important" and let the rest go. And yes, I will go the gym but leave early in order to get what I need to get done.5 -
Day 97 AF. What do you all want for Christmas? Have you thought of that or are you like me and just plain tired of all the pressured shopping for gifts?
@forestdweller1 your writing style is so cool, vivid and unique. You make moonshine? Really?
@NonnieDoiron I love how you decorated your fireplace. Holiday lights in my house really boost my mood. So much that I insist on keeping lights up till mid Jan. and secretly wish I could keep them on all year. I need to buy myself some lighted decor I can leave up year-round.
On the topic of litter - I would like to see a very steep fine for littering in the U.S. It would help teach people respect for others. Places in the world with steep penalties are sparkling clean. NY was the worst, the smell of garbage put outside and the homeless, cats, rats, or raccoons would tear into the garbage bags and leave a disaster behind. One of the reasons I moved away to a more civilized place was because of that. Sadly, I have to pay steep association dues that keep getting jacked up to pay for the landscapers who keep the community very litter-free and clean. Why would clean people need to fund this? See how illogical this is - I am paying because of the bad behavior of people who litter. The people who litter don't get penalized, I do. The people who litter should be covering this cost, do community service clean up and learn to stop. End of rant.5 -
Two glasses of champagne last night on “wine night” at work-my colleague brought it in to celebrate my birthday (that I had last week).
I’m off today, and excited to get the candles in the window, and interior Christmas decorating done. The tree isn’t for another week or two so I don’t kill it.4 -
Hello Friday!
It is cold here in Florida this AM. BRrrrrrr. Covered my flower garden areas last night with comforters so nothing would die. I have 6 or more salmon colored hibiscus buds that want to open and I didnt want to see them drop off.
People that throw anything out a window should get fined, period.
Things that get in my way of getting my fitness in for the day -the weather (if I am going to walk outside). Getting to comfortable after I drop husband at work in the morning. I know, way too many excuses. I used to be that girl that would wake up, be out the door in any weather, do my 4 mile power walk, then go work a very physical job for 8 hours, those were the days.
I agree, each holiday needs its own space to be enjoyed. I HATE overlapping them. Christmas stuff in some stores as early as late August, it is insane. Since we moved to Florida two years ago my husband still keeps asking me where this or that is for decorations we used to have at our large house before. We downsized MAJOR during our move. My Christmas collection was enormous, I could have shared it with 5 families each year. LESS of it is more manageable, plus after taking it all down after Jan 1st now it doesn't look like my house was robbed because the house once again looks so bare, LOL
I have my husband's Christmas party next Friday night. They provide free drink tickets, I will just give mine to my husband. I am going there for the beautiful buffet, holiday atmosphere and mingling.
Then there is New Years Eve to hurdle. If I can get past ALL of these (on top of having my AF 2024 Halloween and Thanksging already) I will be making history with myself. I WANT THIS BADLY!
Hold on everyone that needs extra support and reassuring during these holiday times. The pressure is REAL. I wonder how many other silent folks we run into each gathering or party, et; that would LOVE to be drinking LESS like us, but are afraid to rock the holiday boat???
Be THAT person that rocks the boat. BE BOLD!
