My ice cream was swirly caramel - it’s the children’s so not a fancy brand, but that being said, one thing NZ does particularly well is ice cream. When we’re feeling indulgent we pop up the road to our local ice cream shop which has some amazing flavours - not a huge selection, but always new and exciting ones. I’ll go for anything coffee, particularly with chocolate. Second favourite is chocolate (which my girls won’t eat so it’s never in the house), followed by caramel.5

And January is almost a wrap. Thank you @AlphaHowls for continuing to set up our monthly group! It looks like even with injury your mileage is incredible.
@quilteryoyo I did not mean to imply that your old gym was a scam, just to tell a story about one that was. I hope the new one works out well and a 3 month trial seems appropriate. I think PTs are the way to go to actually keep on target but I have not actually used one except years and years ago when I joined the y. Oddly enough she had me doing floor exercises and using a ball when I sort of thought I could have stayed home and done that. Bring on the equipment and weights. I did like the rower and really wish I had room for one in my house.
@tarun_yadavA congrats on killing your 5 miles this morning. You were off by a step again tho. 🤪😎🤷♀️
I was reading somewhere that Hagan Daas ice cream actually has the most natural ingredients of a lot of brands of ice creams without a lot of the fake stuff and chemicals. My Mom's fave was coffee ice cream but wow talk about a lot of cals and sugar rush. I stick with my replacement yasso chocolate chip cookie dough bars at 100 cal each and find those satisfy my ice cream urge completely.
We had pouring rain this morning and thunderstorms but I am off work so was able to wait until 10 to get my run in. 8 miles to ensure that I avg 7 miles per day for Jan. I think this month I have really pushed the envelope and feel grateful that my body did not break down. It's hard to know sometimes what that window is but I decided that I was no longer happy with just maintaining my fitness and want to get better this year so only one way to do that....

126!
Not the best month for me. Lost 3 days at the start due to travel and flying back/timezones.
Then lost 3 after a week of being back due to my left arch - which still isn't right but a lot LOT better

@SummerSkier I read that too about Haagen Dasz having the least additives/most cream etc.
@ContraryMaryMary kiwi ice cream is renowned! Don't see it as much here in England... But have seen NZ ice cream this, NZ ice cream that in Dubai, India etc.
PS: coffee though!? 🤔4 -
@chris_in_cal wow. thank you so much for your encouragement. 😀😀 This is going to be OUR year for sure. And good to see you able to get back to it this week again. It definitely is all about the logging for me. and running. And the willingness to take some action when things are a little out of hand instead of waiting for a tsunami of failure.
One more session for Jan. It will be a shorter one as I want to rest up to start Feb off this weekend. I love having the 1st on a Sat or Sun so there is no pressure of work.
Congrats @tarun_yadavA meeting your goal this month in spite of all of the distractions. And yes. coffee ice cream. try it. You won't go back. Esp when it sort of is half melted and swirls on the tongue.5 -

@SummerSkier @tarun_yadavA @Laurz9191 @kgirlhart @AlphaHowls nice mileage for the month!
Did a 6k night fast hike last night leading a group. 2 prior weeks of flat ground movement had me running up some hills which my group wasn't too impressed with as they were huffing to keep up
I'll probably end with 125 of 150km goals for the month if it doesn't crazy snow this evening. Good for some recovery before I start piling on the mileage for this year. My recovery is not like it used to be. I had to cut back a bit on the number of days per week for running. Used to be able to do streaks but not anymore....
Weather is looking decent for tomorrow's LSD but sunday is meh. Probably go climb a mountain trail run to get heat in....

@WarmJellyfish I can see how that would let you outrun the fork for a few days! Beautiful scenery! It's interesting that not all of the mountains have names. I don't think any of those temps look good! Have fun climbing the mountains.
Have fun @martaindale and good luck on your race! I hope you can get your watch issues taken care of beforehand.
Nice running @Mari33a . I hope the foot continues to heal.
Great running for the month @Teresa502 !
You did great in Jan @SummerSkier ! I know you weren't calling my old gym a scam. Just wanting to clarify why I think he left so quickly. When you break up with the girlfriend and you are living on her parents property, I guess a hasty exit is required. LOL I like the rower too, but really disliked the ski machine. I didn't notice one of those (ski) at the new gym. BTW, I know a couple have asked how I like the new gym. It will take some getting used to, but I think I will like it. With the frequent personal training sessions, it is a bit too expensive for me though. I will probably drop them, or just do one a week or something after the three months are up.
You are doing great @brnlow ! Consistency first, then worry about mileage and speed goals.
Great job meeting your goal @tarun_yada with 6 days of inactivity.
You did great @AlphaHowls , esp considering all you are going through and your injury.

Yasso is my go to as well. I have one almost every night. The cookie dough is maybe my fav. Recently tried mango and it is amazing! Also love the brownie and the caramel swirl.
@tarun_yadavA Coffee ice cream is delicious!! You definitely should try it.3 -
January mileage roundup:
running miles: 9.9
walking miles: didn’t bother to keep track but guesstimate is about 10
Total walk/run/step miles: 76.4/80
Total run/walk miles: ~19.9/25
Did not quite meet my goals.
Below is the update on “my left foot” (that should be a movie title!) Oh wait, it is! Memorable movie - I liked it.
Picked up my new orthopedic arch support for my left foot late yesterday. Wore it this morning for my 1.9 mile “run” which was more walk than run. It’s definitely better than the first attempt. We’ll see if it fixes my problem. Ankle didn’t hurt. It definitely has more “arch” to lift up my flat foot, which is what the doctor said it should do. It also has heel posting to raise the right side of my heel a little bit. It definitely straightens my ankle more than the first insert. So far, so good.
Tomorrow is the first day of our 10K Training Team. I’ll be “coaching” the walkers. It is a “training team” and set up in two groups. So far there’s one person who signed up for the higher group known as the Shakers (along with 3 coaches). Hmmm… what a runner to coach ratio! About 20 people who are walkers, called the Movers, with only me as their walking coach. Clearly the other coaches are going to have to suck it up and work with the “little people.” It’ll be fun though! I’m looking forward to it 😀
See you in the February thread all!

90.00/80.00 miles
Posting two days today. Yesterday, I went to the gym for my first workout with the new personal trainer. It was ok..not the same as the old gym, but I wouldn't expect it to be. I think it will be good. We did bench press and other upper body exercises. I maxed out at 45 pounds x 10 reps. That's what happens when you don't lift for a while.
I had about an hour after I finished before my haircut appointment, so I used their treadmill and did 1.5 miles of running at an avg pace of 12:16 min/mile and walked 0.50 miles for warm up and cool down.
After I got home, I did another treadmill session...walking 0.50 miles and running 1.50 miles at an avg pace of 11:51 min/mile.
I've had some home repair issues this week. It's a bit frustrating, so I just wasn't in the mood to run, but I did make myself walk 3 miles to make 90 miles total for the month! I'm very pleased with that.
If you are interested in my homeowner woes, see the spoiler below.Monday, I did a load of laundry. When I went in the wash room afterwards, I smelled a burning rubber smell. I didn't see anything, so did another load. This one, there was no smell, but it wasn't spinning right and I couldn't get the suds off the clothes. I rinsed it about 4 times before enough got off to be "safe" to dry.
I called and made an appointment for a repairman to come look at it today. What a waste of our time and my money. He was very nice and honest, but just looked up the model on his phone, guessed as to what the problem probably is, and quoted a price that was more than a new machine would be to get it repaired. He did say that his company was horrible about that and charged way too much for both parts and labor and he suggested I just buy a new one somewhere. Of course, I had to pay for the service call and his time.
Also, last night, my microwave quit working. I was trying to pop popcorn and it wouldn't pop. Everything was working, it just wasn't getting hot. I mentioned it to the repairman and he said it was probably the magnetron, which is what went bad on the last one I had. This is a built in microwave/oven combination unit, so not something that is cheap or simple to replace.
I spent the afternoon looking to try to find when I got the unit I have now and why I decided to replace it instead of getting it fixed. Turns out it was in 2017. It's hard for me to believe it was that long ago. I never did find anything in my journals about when the old one tore up or why I replaced it. I just found references about needing to start looking for a new one 6 months before I actually bought one because it had been a long time since it tore up. Procrastination at it's finest.
I have called another repair person to come look at both items on Tues. So, we'll see what they say. I may have to wind up buying both (oven, microwave, and washer). If I do, I will try to get built in units that are separate, but stack. (The oven and microwave.)
Then, my sink drain has been slow running for a couple of weeks. It was getting worse, despite the fact that I was using drain-o type things in it. So, I decided to take it apart yesterday and see if I could find where it was stopped up. Everything under the drain was clear, so I used my drain snake in the drain that goes into the basement. It got to a point that I couldn't get it to go any further. I wasn't sure if it hit something solid, or I just wasn't doing it right. So, I poured some drain-o into that pipe so it would get to the plugged up area, left it a bit, and then poured hot water down the drain. Well...that was a bust. Now it is totally stopped up and it took 24 hours for a little bit of water to leak down. I was planning to take it back apart today and try the snake again, but I just didn't have the energy. I may try tomorrow.
I do have a plumber that is coming to fix a couple of other things I have going on - basement leak and shut off valve in the master bedroom. I texted him and he said he could also unstop the drain, or at least try. Problem is, I'm not sure when he is coming. He has been sick for 2 weeks and, I've heard, is getting married tomorrow. (He's my cousin.) I can live with the other things, but not having a working kitchen sink is a big pain in the XXX. It's almost as bad as not having water at all.
I know these are basically minor first world issues and I am blessed to be able to afford these fixes without huge financial difficulties. It'll all work out. I was just frustrated today. This week has felt like a week of Friday the 13ths.8 -

It looks like we were running twins this month @tarun_yadavA. 126/125 miles. I ran 4 miles this morning to made my goal. I wasn't sure I would get it this month after being sick. It was cooler today and windy. I didn't really want to get going this morning, but once I did, it was a good run.
Looks like you're having a great time @martaindale. Good luck on the rest of the races.
Sorry about your homeowner woes @quilteryoyo.
