WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2025

Lanette I just bought a new Lazer printer to print off what I needed for taxes. I wanted to do it from my laptop that has more security. My old desk top has a printer but it takes forever to make prints off of it and because of its age I don't feel it is as secure as my lap top. Like you I use a cable. The printer did not come with a cable I had to pay about 10 dollars for it. I bought a Lazer because I don't print very often and the catriages don't dry out like ink jet printers. I don't do any color printing. It is nice to easily print from it. You just plug it into the laptop and then the printer and good to go. It is WiFi compatible but it was too complicated to make it work. I like the cable idea better anyway for the reason you gave...more secure. If you do decide you want WiFi make sure it is one that is compatible with your computer. I like Chromebook and not all Wifi printers work well with it but the cable to computer will work with most computers.2

Walked to Upscale Retail. Usually I can find nice things there, but no luck today. Had dinner, saw a launch but there was so much cloud cover that you couldn’t see it much. Then played mahjongg with one of the ladies here. Didn’t win, tho. Signed up for the lady’s lunch tomorrow, I think it’s at 11:30 but I need to check to be sure.
Allie – hope you don’t get sick, either

Kelly WOW Lots of inches pared away. Well done!!!
Ginny prayer said for favorable scans and positive outcome intervention if needed. Well done for doing your research homework and being your own advocate. ((hugs))
Tracey wow that Aspen, what a little firecracker! Sweet pic of you snuggling the new pup.
Lanette, might there be a little USB port on your printer? Maybe all you need is the cable? Way cheaper than investing in a new printer! Since I’m so paranoid (no financial/banking/information done on any wireless device) my printer is cable connected to my laptop, whose wifi radio has been turned off forever ;} Jacques Pepin and Lidia Bastianach were lovely! So down to earth and flavorful.

Lisa one of the gals at church recommends this https://a.co/d/j6I5fab as having made her skin “silky.” Me, I’d be inclined to seek something where the bovine source was organic/grass fed… Back in the day, used to dring Knox unflavored gelatin, but never noticed and improvement in my nails. :{ I LOVE “learning to knit” and Kels for sending it to you.
Beth, “…completed day 3” well done!
Rita thank you for the daily giggles. Sharing them occasionally with a line dance buddy who, despite being healthy, lean, active and vegan, recently suffered a stroke. I blame it on the surgery to repair torn knee stuff.
Debbie glad to hear your DH is not so easily irritated lately. So sorry to learn it was a short-lived respite.((hugs)).
Rebecca I made biscuits and gravy Saturday for us (not a frequent event!) from my favorite Southeastern Mills Country Buttermilk Biscuit mix (plus ½ C milk) and Country gravy mix (plus 1-3/4 C water). Only had the peppered gravy mix, far prefer the sausage flavor. Just as well, means I didn’t eat as much . . . I don’t even knead them, just stir enough so no milk remains and put ice cream scoopfuls on parchment paper to bake. Rats! Now I’m getting hungry for them again! Great gratitude.I am so with you about bugs. Eeek!
Cindy impressive pineapples! The one I have growing in my office has never fruited, guess it’s just not warm enough in here. ;{
Kylia I am so sorry for your frustration. One of the side effects of eliminating nicotine is that it frees up oxygen in your bloodstream so your body can “get more” out of the food you eat, so even if intake and outgo are constant, excess storage goes up. You will conquer this but it will take time.
Barbie “procrasticlutter” I like it! You are wise not to give into the “get rid of everything” impulse. Hard as it would be, best to wait a year before any big changes. (((hugs held extra extra extra long)))
Terri Ah “mousse” that sounds much more appealing. Doggoned autofill…
Rori, wow! Be safe!
Mo ((hugs)) Sleep in your current case is crucial. You can work out another day but you can’t make up for missed sleep. ((hugs))
Machka not a very restful day off from work . . .
Carla ((hugs)) and hankies.
Heather your pic makes me smile.
Margaret what you said about gaslighters and how best to respond.
Michele thanks for the HB eggs reminder, meant to prep some for deviled eggs, time to get up and do that NOW

Its been years since I had biscuits and gravy. I used to make a mean pan full of sausage gravy! I have a Knorr packet of Hollandaise sauce mix. One day I shall make that with crusty toasted hearty grains bread, bacon, and creamy Sunnyside up eggs. Love eggs benedict.💖

I so admire you ladies that are learning the path in your next chapter. Hugs to you.
Lisa - I sure didn’t want to go to work today.
It is supposed to start warming up tomorrow and teach +1C on Thursday.
How frightening for Kelsey, and for you and Corey to hear.
Beth - I remember when you were getting the original produce boxes.
We have a new produce market here, he explained that there are tiers to the fruit in stores. The top tier is reserved for the grocery stores and he buys the second tier. I tell you his prices and selection are great. I need to go there this week.
Heather - I poke your interpretation of a vision board. I’ve thought of building one and never seem to do it.
Lanette - we haven’t plugged them in. Thankfully they both start.
DH is up through the night and starts them though too
I noticed this morning that it was daylight when I went to work and it was daylight when I came home. It makes such a difference.
I have an iPhone and can scan text using the Notes App. I’ve used it a lot quite successfully.
Rebecca - We had to go to the food bank a couple of times before we moved to AB, we weren’t given a choice of anything. It was just a bag. I ended up giving some stuff away because no one in the family would eat it. I think conferring is a better way.
I agree, you do what you have to do in life.
Debbie - I’m sorry you spoke to soon.
He should just not go visit his mom for a bit knowing he’s going to be yelled at when he does.
She’s being well cared for now, he doesn’t need to put himself through it.
I watched two episodes of Scamanada tonight. Wow she had a lot of people under her spell.
Our temps are still ridiculously cold.

Lanette, they checked mine in my forties, and I don't know if it was due to being overweight or due to my PCOS diagnosis. My gynecologist had it tested. Then they continued to test, and one day, I had an A1c of 10.6. It is also a family issue. My aunts and paternal grandmother had diabetes. My having PCOS made me more susceptible to it. I was placed on Metformin. My doctor took me off Metformin after my surgery. Then my A1C started creeping up, and as a result, My primary care doctor prescribed Ozempic. Then, my weight loss doctor changed it to Mounjaro. Currently, my A1C is 5.4. I recently discovered that when I was 330 pounds, my A1c was as high as 12. I believe insurance should cover that test. I have seen a man in his late 30s lose a leg because of type 2 diabetes. If diabetes runs in the family, their descendants should have their A1C checked. It would save insurance companies millions. That would be an excellent question for you to ask Lanette. I am curious about the answer. I will ask Dr.Lauren about it as well. They only do Pap smears once every three years.
Lisa, I forgot about another similar experience. I had a gastric sleeve done two years ago. I lost weight, but it started creeping back. So, the nutritionist put me in my place. I wanted to cry, but instead, the nurse practitioner sent me to the weight loss doctor at the hospital where I work. I had to work hard to lose. It isn't as easy as it sounds.
Ginny, medication costs and healthcare need to be addressed, period. They are out of hand. I am sending a tight hug and positive vibes.
Michelle, we are talking about returning to FL, just the two of us. I want to wait until it warms up.
Tracey, I hope you enjoy your new puppy.

But I have had a my blood glucose tested and a glucose tolerance test. My blood glucose test results have been borderline high. My glucose tolerance test results are within a normal range.Machka not a very restful day off from work . . .

My days off work are rarely restful and are usually full of things to do and stress. Days off work are days to to do work at home - house work.
I might have half a dozen days in a year that I would consider restful.

Waiting for Max. He is late. I wonder if he has forgotten!
I texted him and he said he had lost track of time.
Tried twice to ring the dentist. My tooth where the filling has fallen out is now aching. For 15 mins they said I was 3rd in the queue. I abandoned it. I will call in in person after lunch. If I catch the right bus it is very near.

Last night G suggested a group trip to Madeira next Feb. I said no, because it's very near my 26 day cruise in March and I will be penniless. P said yes, as did B. Then P started saying she wanted to go to Berlin by train and didn't want to fly. This went on and on. I do not do group holidays any more because of this kind of mess.
😶
Then B said her husband would come if they were successful in selling their holiday home in Cyprus. So P says she could come after all.
Best out of it.
I have spent 10 days in Madeira with John and we are visiting it again in October on our cruise.
Basically, I just hate group things.

Lanette - Thank you! What a wonderful compliment. One of the advice videos online said, "Just keep doing it, the first ones will be terrible. You WILL get better." I had to stop trying to get better, and just keep taping myself, and am so glad the difference shows.
The reality of posting on YouTube:Like I said - mostly, it's just fun. I'm honestly writing the same kind of opinion columns I wrote as a newspaper editor - I write 800 words or so on a subject I find interesting. I go back to it a day later, edit it, break it down to a one-page outline with the key words and thoughts, and then I tape it.
I've deliberately chosen a format that means I have to do almost no editing. You will seldom see any edits in the pieces I'm posting. The average YouTuber that isn't making enough to afford to hire an editor takes one hour of editing time per one MINUTE of video. Meaning mine would take 11 to 12 hours. Uh uh. Nope, not doing it.
Mine run closer to one minute per minute of video. I'm using AI (Copilot) and PowerPoint to create the title thumbnails, and most of the time is just downloading the video and then uploading it to YouTube. Takes a bit more effort there, but I can re-use my descriptions from previous ones, so that helps.
But one thing I'm doing is also keeping all the 800-word pieces, and when there are enough of those (at least 50), I'll publish them, just like I did my first two collected opinion article books on Amazon.
Data realities
I honestly pity the folks who are trying to write OR post videos because they need to make money. Fewer than 1% of people who list their job as authors to the IRS make enough money to actually survive - the median salary is $12,800 a year. The average is terribly skewed by Stephen King and his ilk. Most genuinely make less than their expenses.
The number of videomakers who make enough on YouTube to make it a full-time job is pegged at around 3/10ths of 1%. Considering that there are 2.2 million books a year and 3.7 million videos posted Every. Single. Day., both are barely better than buying a lottery ticket.
I'm doing this because it's a creative outlet that I haven't done before, and one that is very comfortable from the writing aspect, and adventurous due to never having been in front of a camera. I wanted to explore the ins and outs of the whole thing, and I'll continue it until it's not fun.
Like Machka's post, I'm pretty good at quitting when it's time to do so. OK, maybe a little past time, but not much!👀😂🐈⬛
Huh - That went longer than I thought, so I dumped it in a spoiler.
Anyway - we're at 9 degrees F (-13 C) and it was 6 when I got up. Corey got out early, and I just got my good morning call from him, he said the roads weren't terribly bad, and they had treated the bridge over the Arkansas River--they're pretty good about that, usually.
All their guys are out blowing snow off the top of the ice and putting down the salt mixture to get the sidewalks and parking lots safe for the hospitals and clinics and then any businesses they're contracted to that aren't actually shut down.
I'm pushing videos up to YouTube this morning, and trying to get warm. Old houses have odd drafts and cold floors. Brr. Exercising will help - I think I'll get that done now, get my blood moving. Always reminds me of my mother's answer for both being too cold and for any form of boredom - "Go outside and do some jumping jacks!" No sympathy whatsoever... 😂👀😉
Love y'all,

Lanette ... My A1C is checked every 6 months and I do not have diabetes. BUT, I am overweight and, without medication, flirt with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The A1C test has always been covered by our insurance.
And the Vitamin D test is covered as well which I have had done regularly. I've been confused lately by my results as they keep changing the metrics. I've enclosed two types of tests I've had recently for Vitamin D. The first one was done last July. The other test is dated. I've not changed the amount of Vitamin D3 that I supplement with by any appreciable a mount.
I got the produce box delivery date wrong ... it is being delivered today ...
Stay warm!

Pip, thanks for sharing more about your experience after Lenny's death. Grief is a long process. I know that he continues to be a part of your life even with your long happy marriage to Kirby.
Thank you to all the others (I didn't write names and now I've forgotten) for all your encouragement. I know that I am expecting too much of myself. I say that I'm putting one foot in front of the other and then think that it's not enough. I feel almost knocked over by waves of sorrow and grief and think I should be doing better.
Having you all by my side means more than words can express. I have online friends, neighborhood walking friends, and face to face friends but your consistent presence in my life is priceless.
I got something in the mail from the insurance company addressed to me alone so I know that my hours on the phone have gotten results.
Among the items on my gratitude list this morning (besides all of you) were health (staying home all the time keeps me away from the germs) and You Tube where I have a constant source of music and wise words

Weather will start taking a turn to getting us out of the deep freeze. By Saturday we will be back in 20's, 30's at least for awhile. We have not had massive snows this season but there is March to come. The end of winter is in sight. Brother in St. Louis informed me his home in south of St. Louis might get 9 inches of snow. I would think that is close to a record there.
Staying in again today. I checked the pipes at son's house yesterday! NO FROZEN PIPES! Yeah! Putting that extra vent in the basement I think helped!6 -
Went to Hobby Lobby yesterday to therapy shop! The yarn was on sale so I bought enough to knit a blanket along with needles. Met and spoke with a lovely lady who lives in town. We didn’t exchange numbers and I regret that. We got along really well. I also got a small “paint with diamonds” kit to try. The parts may be too small for me but I will see. I finished Jack and am working on Sally now. She will go fast as she is colorful. I’ll post a picture of the two once I finish her. I think I may start the ‘diamond’ kit next, not decided yet. The blanket will go fast as I bought thick yarn and large needles to go with it. Anxious to start both! DH got himself a couple small model kits to work on. We don’t have much space to keep those, but he loves to do models and build things.
Other than shopping, we went to Chili’s for dinner which I took half the order and brought home for dinner. I didn’t eat anything for dinner so will have that today. I’m getting in the habit of bringing home 1/2 the meal when we ate out. Half a restaurant serving is more than enough for me!
It has been really cold here as well so limited walking. It’s not so much the temp as the wind along with the temp. The wind here makes it feel much colder than it is.
I noticed I forgot yesterday’s thought so you get 2 today! 😂

Betsy - good job getting those taxes done. I went back into TaxAct yesterday, found a few entry errors and it's looking better, thankfully don't owe. In the meantime, I also started the free 1040 form yesterday on IRS Direct File and ran into a snag - it isn't able to process income from 1099-R's yet. BUT that upgrade is supposed to happen in March. Think I'll wait a few weeks and give that a try, at least see how close their calculations come to TaxAct. Should be the same....
Beth - good that your A1C is continually checked and they keep on top of it. Also, interesting your Vitamin D results. Mine have varied a bit in the past from the 50's into the 80's, not sure why the variation. Dr. Lisa says these values are "perfect." I always take D3 together with 100 mcg K2 (as MK7 Menaquinone) and Magnesium glycinate. According to some research I once read, if a person is ill or stressed the Vit D gets "used up" but who knows. Reports have come in that people who had Vit D levels above 50 ng/mL fared the best with a Covid infection and were rarely hospitalized. And higher Vit D levels also provide protection against many cancers for some reason. I know medical providers differ on what they consider adequate, and that's OK, I'm sure they have their reasons.
Mo - thank you for sharing your A1C and pre-diabetes history. So glad your A1C was checked and steps were taken to get it back down to 5.4. Sounds like a good idea for anyone who is overweight or has some family history to have their A1C checked early on. And have their D checked especially if we live where we don't get a lot of year-around sunshine or have darker skin which apparently doesn't absorb what we need for Vitamin D production. And like you said, testing could save insurance companies millions. D tests are horribly expensive - I think I pay a cash price of like $30 through my doc.
My paternal grandfather had T2 diabetes and died at age 81 of heart failure. His father also had T2 and died at age 70. According to family lore, he died in jail - he was found on the street slurring speech, they thought he was drunk so threw him in the jail's "drunk tank." He went into a coma from the diabetes and died there in 1931. While my dad didn't have it, I think there's a strong family likelihood. My A1C went from 5.4 before my husband died to 5.8 in just two years and I don't think my diet had worsened and I was still getting exercise. Hoping to stop this trend and get it under control. No, the 5.8 isn't that bad but the .4 increase from 5.4 in a few years is. I'll retest in March or April.
Margaret - thank you so much for sharing your experience with the LaserJet. That's a great idea.
Lisa - I've read that it takes a lot of editing to prepare for uploading YouTube videos. You'll be able to teach a class in it before long. Keep going, you're doing great!
Heather - I keep thinking what a blessing you and John are to be so near to your son and his family. Watching the children when something is going on with your DS and DDIL and participating in their lives. Teaching them about painting for example and having meaningful conversations with them that get their curiosity juices flowing. Wonderful sharing quality time that is good for everyone.
Barbie - I'm with you on staying home as much as possible and avoiding germs. Once spring and summer come and this cold/flu season is past I'll feel better about being more social again. Even if I catch something and I'm only laid up for a day or two, I tend to fret about taking care of Rosie and the hens. Though come to think of it, that's surely an impetus to motor through it.A great thing about tuning into this group is that there's a sense of normalcy - ladies dealing with their own joys and problems and it gets my mind off my own worries. And puts things into perspective.
It's warm, (45F) blustery and rainy today. I've been out to check the hens twice and my hair is a curly mess, lol. So far the girls haven't commented, lol.
This epistle has been in the hopper for hours, better hit the "post" button.
Stay warm and safe, ladies.

Barbie,
I still grieve my daughters. The one I lost( Alexandra) that was March 9, 1999, and my dad passed away on 11/4/2003. I just had a necklace made in Alexandra's memory. I had to go to grief support groups, and I slept with her picture under my pillow. I also grieve for Julia, the daughter who chose crime over being my daughter. I feel rejected and hurt. I talk to my dad all of the time. More so in the beginning. I remember when I visited my dad's grave, I had the children with me. Julia was four then. She saw a lady eating and talking to her husband's grave on her lunch break. Julia asked me if she was talking to a ghost. I told her that she was talking to her husband. Julia said, "Mom?"
"I don't see him," I told her that she sees him in her heart. I was at home, sleeping shortly after my father died. I dreamed of him yelling at me to take care of business and to look in a specific file. I got up at 4 am looking in that file, and the insurance papers for Met Life were there for me. It said for my daughter 100% and my name. I called them when they opened it, and they sent me the insurance money. I know this sounds wild, but I truly understand that the memory and love you feel live on in your heart. Just take your time, cry, and shout if you have to. After the business portion, take care of yourself and allow the grieving process to occur. If you need a therapist, get one. I have one.
Love and tight hugs,

Lunch was its usual heavenliness!
Massive fish and chips, with mushy peas. Max thoroughly enjoyed his and we found enough 'boy geek' things to talk about. John and I shared an afagato for dessert. I could barely walk up the hill to M&S afterwards!
John and Max walked back nearly to his house, but Max had forgotten his key, so, when I got back home, I found him, forlorn, on my doorstep. He must be a very fast walker as John arrived ten minutes later! He borrowed our key and dashed off.
In M&S I bought a Chinese crispy duck.It has all the pancakes, sauce, and salad bits. Will have that tomorrow. With tenderstem broccoli.
Tonight will be scrambled eggs for John and beetroot and feta for me.
My order for Bea's birthday arrived when I was out, and they put it in the old coal bin! The message said it was in 'the shed'.Anyway, it's here and it's safe now.
Then Waitrose arrived with a big delivery which we had to put away. Ooooffff! Some of it has to go in the garage freezer which is down steps. All done ✔️. I still have to hang the washing up, but I am writing to you instead.
Lisa - I'm pretty sure I can't manage all that technical business. I hadn't even thought about writing a script, just a couple of notes. As for titles etc.... .... Just never worked in an office or developed any office skills. I will do something for Instagram though, I swear. My phone is so ancient it can hardly manage much video before overheating! If my son wasn't so incredibly over busy, I could ask him to help me. My elder son lives too far away to be of help, which is a shame as he used to post on YouTube until it was costing him too much money.
I do not want to buy equipment etc.
Maybe someday. Who knows. I study YouTubers very carefully for tips on style though. It seems the more 'natural' the better. Being natural takes a lot of talent and artifice.

Lanette,
It was low when Dr. Monroe checked my D level, and I was in my forties. I had to take a high dose of Vitamin D. Now it is on the high side of normal. So, a D level needs to be checked, too. I got a message that it was time to go to the lab and get my levels tested again. They check everything now. When I was pregnant with my daughter Alexandra, I had Gestational Diabetes, and they say that I should have been at risk for diabetes then. I had to take insulin during my pregnancy with her. With DS, I didn't have that issue, but I did have Pre-Eclampsia. My bp started low but was as high as 176/120. My ankles looked like elephant hooves. I have very skinny ankles typically. So I was shocked when I got off work, put on a short set, and noticed my legs. I never had to go on BP meds, though.
People don't realize that when your blood sugar level is at 300, your blood is thick like mashed potatoes, so that is when you can stroke out because the blood is too thick to circulate throughout the body properly. So, the heart works harder, and in the end, the heart enlarges. Then, it cannot be as effective. That is when cardiac problems come in, and strokes occur. It is pretty scary.
One day, I will post a picture of the recipe to show the difference in the blood at different blood sugar levels. High blood sugar is unsuitable for the brain due to decreased blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. That is why I love Rita shares what she learns in her Diabetes class.
Michelle, I hope you are not bored in Florida. What part of Florida do you go to?
Rori, Your upcoming trip sounds fun. I would love to put on ice skates again and go skating. I also want to go snowshoeing. I think I will try it in Vermont one year. I would love to go to the mountains and stay in a cozy cabin warm enough to scrapbook, read, and color. I will also work. I will work on learning this as well. I also would love to go to Thailand and enjoy the beach and the sun.
Okay, I had better put another load of laundry in the wash. Talk to you all later.
XO,
