@Nova Is there a way to quote a post and keep the picture format? It just turns it into a link:

Not for nothing. For those of us who do not know how to use RTE, it would be really nice if MFP included a "how to" guide, and the perfect place to have attached it would be the initial notification, or here in the "if you need more information" discussion.

    @BKWERM88

You can center images, but not text. Underlining is not available, but you can use bold, italic, or strikethrough instead. Additionally, you can choose from various heading sizes.

@lauren_989 Unfortunately, no; this is the way the quoting works in Rich Text.

I didn't know about the mentions not working unless its on the first line.

@b3achy said it best…since I can't quote only a portion of her post, i'll copy and paste….and amazingly this came in single space (see note below regarding inconsistency)

……. If the new editor can't do colors, then I don't understand why we're changing to an inferior editor. BBC Code has worked fine for ages, why switch now to something that doesn't at a MINIMUM include what we can do in BBC code and then adds new things. Seems like yet another backwards step on this platform….

I understand companies ending their support etc but I'm pretty sure there were other solutions…..

I guess if all you do is a quick post, then it's not that significant but for me…yikes.

I hold a lot of my content for my different groups in the draft section. If I had known that all my work would go "poof," I would have saved it somewhere else, but that's water under the bridge.

I just succeeded in getting to the point where I didn't have to save content outside of MFP, but I guess that will change again. The tool I was using doubled in membership fees, so I cancelled it….going to have to rethink it as my frustration right now is worth the cost.

IF it worked just like WORD or EXCEL, I'd be ok. But it doesn't AND it's very inconsistent. What worked one day, didn't work the next. The removal of colors makes our post very bland. Many of us used colors for at a glance results…now gone! No "center"…maybe I missed it but I read the only way to center is to use the space bar!!!! HA ~ oh, the space thing didn't work….. oh, I read it works with images but not text.

Automatic double and triple spacing (when you copy) with no consistent way to get back to single space????

The copy and paste is irregular at best and some things just wont! ….and don't get me started on the spoiler. A lot of my content has spoilers and nested spoilers. It made it very clean for reference for me AND for anyone who wished to see the details or not….I'm not going to recreate that scenario each and every time I update.

The Preview was awesome as well. The ability to see what you were about to post vs….let's just hit the button and pray!

I am in upwards of 8 groups and am Admin in two of them. Prior to this change, I could update all those groups as well as participate in the chats in 90 minutes or less. Now it's taking me 3+ hours and then I'm not satisfied with my output….

I use emoji's to indicate success or not like ✅❌. Well when I try to copy and paste those to existing lines…. this is what happens. Then I have to go "Fix" each line, hence 3+ hours. I don't have time for this!

    Existing Line1

    Existing Line 2

    Existing Line 3

All of which I prefer to be single spaced.

I've heard one person say they liked the changes and many considering leaving…

I'm sure there's more ……please consider another source for editing.

I'm trying but I don't see many upsides to this change although I really am trying to do a little research before 'throwing in the towel' all together. I'm sure that you aren't the only one - but I would love to know your work-arounds for some of the things that we are all having problems with ~ or perhaps you could suggest any videos that may help in learning this.

Hey all, here’s an update on the spacing issue:

When you press “enter” or "return” on the keyboard, it typically creates a new paragraph, adding space between the previous line and the new one. If that is not your intention, you can use "shift-enter" to create a new line directly underneath the existing one.

Here's a small workaround for the mentions issue until it's fixed.

This is a weird one, but if you put a single blank space before the mention, it should work past the first line of text.

    @LisaInArkansas Ctrl/Cmd-Z (or whatever your usual Undo keyboard shortcut is) can remove quotes/spoilers and the like. You can also click on the quote to delete it;

    No underlining. 😢
And if there is a way to center, I can’t figure it out!!!

If you were going to improve things, here are two:

    — Allow us to add Signatures
    — Make the profile pictures bigger so we can actually see each other!!!

How can I mention more than 1 person in a message?

Any way to single space lines?

It's really annoying when I hit enter and my lines are double or triple spaced.

    Don't like it.

    @sydditt @sydditt leave a space before each

I appreciate the tips but they seem to be mostly for those using a computer. I primarily use the app on my iPhone, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Yes, me too. I use the Android app 99% of the time. There is no "Shift" key.

Nova I’m having an issue with the quote feature. I click on quote, it looks like it’s going to paste into my text box, yet it does not. It used to. I have seen other quotes make it into the text box, so it’s possible. Do I have to do some other step? Is this an issue only with iPhones? I could not find any info about this in the link regarding the changes. Thanks!

Not able to replicate that; have you tried repowering on your device or restarting the app? Give that a try. If you continue to have issues please send a support request (you can add "Attn: Durden" to the title to make sure it gets to me) in with some screenshots/other info so I can take a look.

Can someone explain the code block, please?

  • AnnPT77
    AnnPT77 Posts: 35,534 Member

Yes. I just explained it - or hope I did 😉 - on another thread.

The MFP Community, under the covers, is really a piece of software called Vanilla Forums. There's a lot of info online about details of Vanilla Forums' rich text editor. This is what it says about code blocks:

    Code blocks

The code block format option formats your text as code and includes syntax highlighting for some of the more common coding languages. When you input code, the coding language is automatically detected and the syntax is highlighted accordingly. Rich Editor currently supports:

    ADA

    Apache

    AppleScript

    C++

    Bash

    BASIC

    Clojure

    CMake

    CSS

    Dart

    Dockerfile

    Excel

    Go

    Haskell

    HTTP

    Java

    JavaScript

    JSON

    Kotlin

    Less

    Lua

    Makefile

    Markdown

    NGINX

    Objective-C

    Perl

    PHP

    PowerShell

    Python

    Ruby

    Rust

    SCSS

    SQL

    Swift

    Twig

    TypeScript

    XML

    YAML

    Source: https://success.vanillaforums.com/kb/articles/615-rich-editor

If you don't write code, no reason to care or use code blocks. If you want to paste a table from something like Excel, you can just copy/paste it, code blocks aren't necessary.

Is there a limit to how long posts can be? I just spent an hour and a half working on my group's weekly assignments in a post, trying to figure this all out. (I hate these ginormous boxes instead of simple blue, clickable links). Anyway, when I went to hit "post" I got an error message saying my post was something like 71000 characters too long. What does that mean? Am I going to have to do multiple shorter posts?

  • durden
    durden Posts: 3,777 MFP Staff

Right now the limit is 25,000 characters, but that hasn't been changed from before.

Also not sure what you're referencing in regards to "ginormous boxes instead of links".

    @durden ,

I think she might mean things like this, shown in a screen shot of part of a post I made earlier linking another MFP thread from my post.

I haven't quite figured out under what circumstances we get that instead of the old one-line blue URL link, because I admit I don't care very much, but it is mildly annoying . . . and I can see how it would make a post with many links difficult to read.

  • durden
    durden Posts: 3,777 MFP Staff

Oh, I see; the rich editor is taking a link to a post on our forums and sort of turning it into a quote. That's actually kind of cool. The more you know!

For normal links it just shortens it, like this; https://www.google.com/ .
