LESS Alcohol ~ APRIL 2025 ~ One Day at A Time

@SparkSpringtime69 Well I guess, I don't get out much anymore. Since I've been an adult, the only states/countries that I've been to are Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, and Baja Mexico. I grew up in CA and helmets have been required there for many years (I believe in OR also). At first, the bikers resisted. But they make some pretty cool looking helmets these days.
When I was a teenager, I used to ride my brother's 350 Honda around town. I had a driver's license, but not a motorcycle license which is required in CA and OR. Helmets were not required and I didn't wear one. My attire was usually shorts, tank top, and flip-flops. Probably, not a good idea. I drank beer at the time. But if I went to a friend's house and had a beer or two, I would ride home and get my car. Again, probably, not a good idea. But, they were different times.
@mfowler883 I don't think you mentioned how old your grandson's age was. But I was thinking the same thing. If I had young children, I would still let them experience riding. But I would buy dirt bikes or three or four-wheelers and take them to the desert, off-road forest roads, or the dunes. And, yes, they would be wearing all the right equipment. I hope your grandson recovers quickly.

@mfowler883 so sorry to hear about your grandson’s accident! How old is he? A broken leg in three places … wow. Hopefully he’ll get and wear protective gear from now on. You had every right to voice your opinion! Scary stuff.

LA today and last night-only one glass of wine. I was consistent about logging my food today and met my calorie goal! Glad I did because that sealed my resolve to not have that 2nd glass.

@mfowler883 OMG… sorry to hear about your grandson. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

A - 1Daughter was admitted to the hospital today. She’s been having some serious intestinal issues, so they are prepping her for endoscopy and colonoscopy tomorrow. Going to be a long night. More of a night for coffee rather than wine. The hospital room couch will not be great for my hip, but oh well… what’s a mom to do?
@mfowler883 sorry about your grandson. I think you’re very right about the helmet. My brother an experienced rider not too long ago was hit by a car. His helmet saved his life, so I’m definitely pro helmet for all.
8 -
@NonnieDoiron Hope they figure out what's wrong with your daughter and you got some rest last night.
@Womona Good job not reaching for that second glass!
AF last night for me after my indulgence the night before. What a lesson that was! No plans for drinking this weekend. I'm trying to avoid the casino even though it does mean not hanging out with SO much since that's where our "date nights" happen.
AF = 9/A = 1

And finally just did my first workout since the cruise last month! I have to adjust to my new schedule. I need to get up around 4:30 to get a workout in before I head out to work for the day. I've been staying out from about 7 to 7 every day, so it takes up all of my time!

I like how folks are tracking LA days in addition to NA and A days. I think it's great and keeps one away from the all or none mentality.
Great conversation about growing mushrooms. I'll bet there's lots of cost savings there. Can't wait until my husband officially retires and we can move somewhere where I have a bit of land to have a garden. Well I sorta want more. I want the veg garden, a few fruit trees, the chickens (and eggs) and a pet goat. Maybe I'll learn how to make cheese and sell it.
7 -
@globalhiker If you ever get a goat, don't turn your back on it. It's intrinsic…they LOVE to ram you. And they only do it when you're not looking 🙃 Alpacas, llamas, and emus are cool too!

A - 1So, it looks like I’ll be wine free for at least a week longer.
My daughter’s tests revealed she either has severe ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s. The diagnosis will be decided tomorrow after an MRI of her small intestine. The doctor said we’ll be in the hospital for at least a week as they figure out her treatment plan.
The couch is definitely not good for my hip.😕

Today is my 24th anniversary in business (professional pet sitter) I planned all along to drink today. For 24th years I have taken my very first client out to lunch or dinner (her choice) and we had a ball. Filet mignon, fried shrimp, twice baked potatoes and Cesar salad. We each had a martini and split a fantastic bottle of cab over the meal. In addition, I ate an entire pint of Java Jolt Blue Bell Ice Cream. Having said all this, I thought COVID was going to be the end of my business and in truth it nearly was, but I have come out on the other side, stronger and incredibly grateful for the life I have and the opportunities I have been given. Out of 101 days thus far this year, I have drank 16 days Yeah, today was a great day. Have a wonderful, restful weekend.

Had a little wine tonight, but it was with intention, not that impulsive, knee jerk reactive type of drinking. It was sipping, nibbling on a block of Iberico cheese, poring over business stuff.

Grandson is improving - surgery today to put his leg back together, lots of screws and plates but they say he'll make a full recovery. I don't think he realizes yet that he's gonna miss out the rest of the baseball season. He's 8, BTW. Thanks to everyone who's wished well or offered supportive words. Now that the worst is over, tensions around here are easing up.
When we launched our current business, covid was just ramping up. I don't know how we managed, but we actually grew through the whole thing. I would say, generally speaking, running a business under the best of circumstances is a wild ride that will strengthen & enlighten you, and leave you more appreciative of a lot of things. But to run a business under conditions that leave well-established businesses all around you permanently shuttered, scrambling to find a way to make it work and keep it alive, that takes it to a whole different level.

Still going AF Strong. Fingers crossed.
Sorry to hear about the young ones in the hospital, that is so stressful but good on the mend and getting care.
Science lovers: I learned a new vocabulary word today: hyperkatifeia. Do you know what that means?
10 -
What a great way to celebrate the anniversary of your business! You and @Mfowler883 and anyone else trying to navigate a business during Covid… I give you so much credit for ding that!
5 -
@NonnieDoiron Oh my goodness, sorry to hear that! Neither is a great option. How do you even get colitis or Crohn’s???? I hope you can find a more comfortable place to sleep. Keep taking care of your hip!
4 -
@mfowler883 hope his surgery went well. That’s a lot of hardware for an 8 year old! Will be cool to show his classmates the X-rays though!!!! At least he didn’t get knocked out.

Two drinks at a charity gala last night. Husband just poured me a Prosecco for brunch on this lazy Saturday morning. I need to seriously moderate today!
Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

@globalhiker Whoa! Describes me to a tee. I bookmarked the article that you posted. It's long and too early in the morning for me to read.
I also did a Google search (AI overview). These are some points that I can relate to (I boldened them):
Hyperkatifeia refers to an intensified, negative emotional state experienced during drug withdrawal, characterized by heightened sensitivity to emotional distress and a shift in motivation towards negative reinforcement.
- Symptoms: Hyperkatifeia can manifest as dysphoria, malaise, anxiety, irritability, and sleep disturbances.
- Role in Addiction: It plays a significant role in the cycle of addiction, as the heightened negative emotions associated with withdrawal can drive individuals to seek further drug use to alleviate these negative feelings, creating a cycle of dependence.
- Impact on Recovery: Hyperkatifeia can be particularly challenging during early recovery from substance abuse, making it difficult for individuals to cope with withdrawal symptoms and increasing the risk of relapse.
I can't figure out how to get out of bulleted list mode. So I will post more later.
3 - Symptoms: Hyperkatifeia can manifest as dysphoria, malaise, anxiety, irritability, and sleep disturbances.
-
@globalhiker To continue…the statement,
Role in Addiction:
It plays a significant role in the cycle of addiction, as theheightened negative emotions associated with withdrawal can drive individuals to seek further drug use to alleviate these negative feelings
, creating a cycle of dependence.
That's explains exactly what I'm experiencing. I'm afraid to quit because I'm afraid of the negative feelings that I will experience. So I continue to drink to avoid those negative feelings. I need to get past that.
A very close friend of mine, from years ago, would tell me after a night of drinking (beer in those days), "You just have to tough it out!". I would go down to the Ma and Pa store down the street to get some hair of the dog, while she would "Just tough it out". It most likely was not a very pleasant day for her. But I think it's probably the best way.
Wish me luck…I want to quit!

I know the cycle too well. The worse I feel, the more I drink to numb myself, and the more I drink, the worse I feel. It only stops when you do, but when you're on the inside of the pattern, it's hard to see the way out.
Wow this new version is lame, can't quote more than one?
Anyway, @Womona speaking of x-rays:There should be others but that's the one they sent me. Sounds like he's doing a lot better today. Early on, they were worried about internal injuries but imaging came back good. The car t-boned him, crushed his leg against the bike, then he was thrown clear across the street and into a yard. Not sure the source, but other grandson said the driver was on her phone and probably never even saw him until the impact. I don't think he was there, so it may just be speculation, but a neighbor saw the whole thing so it could be true.
I said that's another big factor - you might have rode in the streets out there when you were kids, but today's drivers are cut different. As an experienced rider, these fools scare me, inexperienced kids have NO business on streets, even back country gravel roads.

Last month we were talking about the intro to the monthly threads. @Michieb125 mentioned something about having "prompt questions". Since science was brought up (which I'm interested in), I have a another question that may be interesting to some or not so much to others.
The question is, has anyone experienced vision problems or vision loss that they associate with alcohol usage. I'm not talking about when you are drunk and can't find the door 😯 But, vision problems you've experienced even when you are sober that you may feel that are associated with alcohol use?
2 -
@mfowler883 I no longer know how to quote portions of a post. But it sounds that you know about alcohol addiction, when you said, "I know the cycle too well. The worse I feel, the more I drink to numb myself, and the more I drink, the worse I feel. It only stops when you do, but when you're on the inside of the pattern, it's hard to see the way out".
I hope I can find my way out! I think for myself, that I just have to do it. I'm not having serious withdrawal symptoms (I know them all too well!) I'll keep you posted.
Those x-rays look pretty bad. But, he's young and will most likely heal quickly. I agree with you. What is an 8-year old doing riding on the street? Don't you have to have a driver's license and plates to be riding on the street?
Anyways, I wish him a speedy recovery!

There’s not really a “cause”. They are auto-immune diseases, most likely genetic (my mom’s twin had Crohn’s). The doc said something triggered this horrible flare-up, so this is the first time we’ve experienced this. MRI will be read sometime today, and they will determine which of the 2 it is. But, it’s just a label at this point as the treatment is the same.
I did find a way to make the couch work better for my hip. It’s still not the best, but it’s better and temporary.
5 -
Thank you for posting the article. I learned a lot, and love having a new word in my vocabulary!
@SurferGirl1982 i hear ya. At least you know why now. Doesn’t make it any more fun, but it’s nice to know you can get through it. Meanwhile I am like freaking Pavlov’s Dog in the “anticipation “ stage. After work/out to dinner/end of workday? That’s where I get caught, and that’s where I need to concentrate on changing habits. It’s those initial 3 days that I find the hardest, then it gets a lot easier for me.
@NonnieDoiron autoimmune… ugh! Does anyone know how to combat an autoimmune disorder? There are just so many out there. Anyway I hope she gets relief soon. Glad you found a better solution for your hip.
@mfowler883 OMG that X-Ray! I’m sure there are other views that are just as bad. Poor kiddo.

Last few days been spent fretting over things I can't control. Enough already… Moving on….
What can I control… me! At least attempting to…. so refocusing on everything, starting today. File Under: I know what I need to do, now, just do it!!!

Personal Time ✅@MissMay ~ I like that post….looks like I've answered it. One day at a time 😍
@chicbuc ~ Yikes, that's an early wake up time. I start at 5:30 on work days to get mine in, and I thought that was early 🤓. But kudos for getting it done!
@globalhiker ~ Loving your AF run! Keep it going. Thanks for sharing Hyperkatifeia. It is a vicious cycle. Mine is like… I'll just have one, or two, and then it's the bottle.
@Born2Run1958 ~ Congrats on 24 years! A surviving business through COVID is amazing and speaks to your perseverance ~. I'm glad you were able to come out successful!
@mfowler883 ~ ouch. I've never (knock on wood) broken anything so I have no comparison for pain or discomfort..but that xray does look quite painful. I agree with the drivers of today….too many distractions. Glad he's on target for a full recovery and I hope he heals quickly. That is amazing that you grew your business during COVID. What is your business (if you don't mind sharing)? I'm happy you made it as well.
@SurferGirl1982 ~ No on the vision change, but curious to hear about others.
@NonnieDoiron ~ Sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis. I hope the treatment plan isn't too harsh. I wonder if they could bring in a cot for you vs the couch. Hopefully you will both be home soon!

@Womona I'm familiar with the Pavlov's dog thing. It's crazy! Out to a Mexican restaurant? Well, got to have a margarita, right? Whiskey commercial on TV…boy, those people seem like they're having such a good time. Maybe, I should go get some? It wouldn't be the same mowing the lawn without a cocktail afterwards! And, on and on.
I really will be on board soon. I agree that the first three days are the hardest. After that, I start feeling better physically and proud of myself. Then I don't want to blow it and lose that feeling of accomplishment.
@itladyee Your goal list is looking pretty good. I had to chuckle a bit when I saw the 🚫 symbol next to alcohol. I'm not suggesting that your drinking is out-of-hand. But, it seems that your drinking habit may be similar to mine. Please be careful because I believe you said you've cut your working hours. It can become very easy to over-indulge when you don't have to be somewhere at a certain time. That's when things got out-of-hand for me…idle hands! I thought that retirement would be great…all the things I would have the time to do. But, it turned out just the opposite. I started drinking daily. Now, I'm physically unable to do those things that I was looking forward to do.
I'm also curious if anyone else has any comments about vision problems. I find it interesting to see if there are similarities.
