WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JUNE 2025

Thank you Barbie for the clean slate!
I am just happy to have made it through May! I am lighter than April. Still nicotine free in spite of life circumstances thrown my way. Happy to be in June for the most part!
Can't go home for my brother's wife's father's funeral those coming Tyesday and Wednesday. I called him dad. I even looked up flights, but either Dana or I have to be at shop. She has several appointments those two days. I am disappointed.
Today started productively. Just household chores, major weeded one flower bed, planted some yellow and purple iris bulbs as well as some other transplants from a friend. Then.....
My daughter called. My oldest granddaughter t boned a Tesla around noon. Her car is probably totalled. Air bags deployed. They are currently at the hospital waiting on xrays and scan results. Her left(?) arm was swollen before she left in ambulance. It happened in front of our shop. I could take cameras backwards and saw the accident. I wanted to go to hospital, daughter told me no. There are enough people there. I feel lost.....
Protein, water, and 15 mins dedicated walking 6 days/week. June goals.
Welcomes !
Hugs!
Love,
Kylia in Ohio

😀 Meeting new people on this thread has caused me to think back about how I began my journey on MFP. I started with "baby steps" not trying to fix everything at once. Someone had suggested to me that I throw out all the high calorie, or high sugar, or processed foods and start clean, but instead I ate what I owned and logged every bit. That's how I learned about how those foods were not helping me (too little nutrition matched with too many calories). By the time those foods were gone, I'd learned a lot about what foods would give me the highest nutrition for the fewest calories. I decided to seek every opportunity to be active (things like sitting in front of the TV were obviously not going to be a good choice). I stopped drinking coffee when I realized that I liked it best with tasty sugary creamers. I noticed that drinking coffee or tea in the morning interfered with going for a long walk. Little by little I learned more about nutrition and exercise. I read books and online articles that helped me learn more. I endured an hour here and there of being hungry so I could stick to the plan I'd made for the day.
😀 Now I do all sorts of healthy things that have become as automatic as brushing teeth, bathing, and wearing clean clothes.
😀 Lorna, I've learned that shooting myself with the "second arrow" doesn't help me when I stray from the path I've set for myself. Yes, I made a special trip to the grocery store to buy four more pints of Cherry Garcia ice cream and ate them, but I didn't make it worse by kicking myself for doing so I just moved on with a lesson learned. Success is inspirational, failure is educational.
😀 One of my favorite secrets of adulthood is "what's fun for other people may not be fun for me, and vice versa". As I read this thread, I get great ideas that will work for me and read other stuff that made someone happy and wouldn't work for me.
😀 Carla, beautiful outdoor setting. Is that wrought iron?
😍😎 My Zoom call friend cancelled so I had extra time this morning to get all the watering done. I just got home from an hour's walk with Annie and my friend who just returned from a month in England.

@cityjaneLondon – Vertigo is a terrible feeling. I found two things that were very helpful: staying well hydrated and a YouTube video explaining a technique for “resetting” your equilibrium. – These same physical therapists helped me get rid of carpal tunnel syndrome. I am a huge fan.
@ LSamara --- one of the things that I have found most helpful is simple – log everything that I eat BEFORE I eat it. Then I can make an informed decision about whether I really want to spend my calories to satisfy the temptation --- sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes no. And I agree that kicking yourself in the butt is a poor exercise, better to own it and move on.
@ SophieRosieMom the BMR calculator was very helpful. I have used a calculation of 11 calories per pound for years as my BMR which puts me at 2585 resting BMR. The calculator showed 1690 as my BMR --- challenging to lose weight at 1550 calories per day unless I put in some time exercising. Important information to know, too.
@BubBerry – you and I are the same age. From February 2024 to September 2024, I was exercising about the same amount that you are now. I not only weighed myself, once a month I measured upper arms, upper thighs, waist and hips. I lost 14 inches over that 7 month period --- which was much more satisfying that the scale.
All – thank you for the warm welcome!
Now back to work instead of reading MFP posts.

Lorna in Maine - I'm sorry you got trolled, but one thing you'll find is that most unexpected friend requests on MFP are from trolls/scammers, etc. The vast majority of us on this thread only ask for friend requests if we want to message someone directly outside the thread, like Lanette's check-in folks who send in whatever weekly updates they've committed to each week. As far as beating up on yourself, why do that when the world is happy to do plenty of that for you? Just draw a line through it, and go back to what you're trying to accomplish. Take a breath, my dear, you didn't ruin your life, it just ruined your plan for that day or that meal.
Kylia - So stinking proud of you that you're getting through all this nicotine free! So sorry about your granddaughter's accident. It's honestly hardest to be the one who sits and waits for news. I hope her injuries are minor and recovery is swift, dear heart.
Carla - The deck is absolutely lovely. Looks heavenly.
Elaine in Fort Worth - I'm originally from a tiny East Texas town between Tyler and Nacogdoches, just four hours south of Fort Worth. Welcome to the thread, we're glad you're here!
I got a little good budget news - the insurance on the house, due in July, actually dropped by about 4%, which is outstanding considering the fact that it's going up everywhere else, apparently. Looked over the numbers, and we've got more than full replacement cost insured, with the usual caveats. Hopefully never need it, but it's nice to have it.
I'm in the house where it's cool, as it's in the mid-80s outside, and throw in the 60% humidity, and I bog down pretty quickly. The heart medication keeps my blood pressure low, so I don't get along with heat at all these days. That's OK, that's what mornings are for…
My demo guy stopped by and they're hauling the last shed out in toto tomorrow (and more power to him) and he plans to clean up the last trash pile, the one I was dreading having to do ourselves… that's the plan anyway. If he does, we plan on adding about 20% onto the final check I give him as a bonus. Well worth it, in the end.
Later, babies… hope it's a grand week for everyone.
Love from sunny Arkansas,

Did Biggest Lower Power Sculpt DVD then Yoga for Beginners DVD. Then took a walk to Food Lion for cabbage and grapes that were on sale. Finished putting out the ceramics. Vince put out the sign for Porky Pig and my big mushroom.
Drkatie – congrats on that awesome weight loss
Elaine – welcome! Great loss
Heather – hope that “vertigoish” goes away real soon
bubberry – welcome! Yes, losing at our age IS a challenge, but it CAN be done. Come here for support. We support you in everything because everything affects our eating. Our daily life’s ups and downs have a lot to do with it. Coming here sometimes provides ways of coping that you might not think of. Personally, I get ideas for things to eat and different exercises to do.
Barbie and kay – same here about donating. I just can’t bebothered pricing everything, etc. for not a large return so I don’t do garage sales. I just donate. But I do have to admit that lately, it seems that the Salvation Army gets a lot of donations but there isn’t that much good stuff in their stores. And the prices! So I’m going to be looking for another place to donate. I don’t like GoodWill. From what I understand, a lot of the money goes towards the salaries of their CEO and stuff.
Proudlyblonde – welcome!
Carla – Those windchimes with the verses and poems on them sound so neat. I really like original things, not the ordinary. Guess that’s why I like homemade ceramics rather then ceramics that you buy at a store. I can’t remember if we decided to go with Trex or something similar.
Lorna – I’m sorry you’re in so much pain. You know something? I very very very seldom have fried food and now whenever I do, my stomach says “ah, I don’t think so”
kylia – I’m so sorry about your granddaughter
barbie – I like your saying “success is inspirational, failure is educational"
OH, did we have excitement at our house earlier. There was a flying (no less) insect in the house. You should have seen the cats! 4 cats running back and forth. Unbelievable. I think they finally killed it because they were swatting at it and I could see it was hurting.
Elaine – “back to work instead of reading MFP posts”??? Where are you priorities, lady???? lol
Got all but one ceramic out.

The vertigo got slowly better yesterday, though I had a quiet day. I had quite a bit of yoghurt on my breakfast muesli, and in a 'lassi' drink. Delicious veal stew for dinner, with leeks, onions, carrots, celery. Asparagus side. (Barbara, it's just super fresh, and hasn't travelled far. The rest of the year, and I eat a lot of it, it comes from Peru!)
This morning I have just woken up with no vertigo, and some energy! 😃 Haven't had that for a while. Wow, that microbiome is vital to our health! I'm just really hoping the cystitis stays at bay now. I did a quick five minutes 'granny' exercises. Sit to stand, shoulders and back, balance. I will do countertop pushups in the kitchen while I make the tea, heel drops, and elbow to knee while I walk there. In bed I do bridges and crunches. Clamshells etc when I remember. Of course, our stairs are the best exercise. My knee is greatly improved. Not perfect, it never was, but I can even manage the steep top stairs now. For the newbies, I am 75, and had both hips replaced last year. It was a long haul, not helped by a chronic 'dodgy' knee.
Girls today, so I will be washing my hair in half an hour's time. I've got all kinds of gluten free things in. There must be something Bea will eat.
John's trip out with Max to the blues and soul gig was a great success. Max really enjoyed the history of the blues they tell, and John could see he is really interested in the saxophone. (He plays the piano). Great to find a mutual interest with a 14 year old. They also read economics and science books together. I think John was worried they would somehow lose touch as Max got older, so he is very happy.
Love to all, and WELCOME to our new people. 🤩

May Books
Of those 5, I gave The Note by Alafair Burke 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4 Stars went to:
- Dead Simple by Peter James, the first novel in "a gripping mystery series" set in a place called Brighton England and venturing into Hove England.
- One of Us Knows by Alyssa Cole. There's a lot going on in that book!
Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf was the first Virginia Woolf I have ever read … and quite possibly the last. Stream of consciousness is not my style.

JUNE
June 1 - All day training course regarding the Varroa Mite which can invade bees & beehives. I'm glad we went, but I wasn't excited about getting up early on a Sunday and spending the whole day learning about this mite. The course could have ended at least an hour earlier … probably 2 hours. There was so much repetition.
June 2 - Work from home. But also both husband and I had bloodwork and had to sort something out with Services Tasmania.
I worked 5 days last week, had Saturday off, and then felt like I went back to work on Sunday with that Varroa Mite workshop. My weekend was definitely not long enough.
I have, however, managed a couple of walks in the last 2 days.

Managed to get my son's cake made. Edie helped. It's all boxed up and ready to go.
My son is arriving in twenty minutes to pick the girls up. This morning they made cards for his birthday. Lunch was a huge success, with new gluten free pasta for Bea, which she loved with her beloved pesto.. We had smashed avocado, with gf bread, mixed salad, and jumbo frankfurters. Stewed apples and berries for dessert, with gorgeous ice cream. They still managed to tuck into mini pretzels, and chocolate digestive biscuits! John was going to take them out for cricket in the park, but my son is coming a bit earlier than planned.
I'm doing a v easy dinner, and my first priority is a nap, when they've gone.
So sorry to hear about your granddaughter, Kylia. I hope she is OK. 💕

Good Morning.
Barbara … it was cloudy when I went to bed so I didn't get to see the northern lights last night. Slept better on the new mattress (it is still too firm) last night, but that's mostly because I'm becoming exhausted. Still had numbness in hands and elbows.
I did not meet my goals in May. But June is a new month!
Looks like the current deals on Chevy trucks are ending today. I did get my husband to go and take a look yesterday afternoon at trucks in a local lot (while the dealership was closed). It will take a lot of finagling to make it work in our budget and only with a good trade, great dealer incentives and a low interest financing rate. He's gone fishing this morning, so I'm guessing that we'll just have to wait for new deals to come out in the future. I've noted that the trucks that were on the lots at the beginning of May are still on the lot at the end of May … the dealerships will be wanting to move those at some point.
No plans the next two days but some cleaning and catching up on things.
Have a great week!

Hey, kids…
Dropping in to see if there's any news from Kylia regarding the granddaughter, and since there's a smiley icon, hope all's as good as can be.
Machka - Love those word clouds, they make me happy.
Heather - I want to come back as your granddaughter - so many amazing grandmothers on this thread.
Carol - So pleased for yours for her achievements. She's what I wanted to be in high school!
As usual, going three different directions this morning. I've got yarn winding on the electric winder. Broke down and got one, means I'm able to a) get a good handle on how much yarn I have and b) wind it into skeins that are all of a similar size and stack and store easily, and c) make them all center-pull, easy to work with. Only about 40 more skeins are left to get wound up. Videoing them wound on the winding machine, basically ASMR videos for those who know what that means. Will film another five of those, and be done with it.
Soundscape is the way I like it as well - dishwasher going, yarn winder winding, just in general content with my day. Still thinking about driving to see my sister, not sure I'm ready for a four- or five-hour drive, and there's no other way to get there across Oklahoma except to drive. I just love my house and my environs and don't want to leave! Eventually the pull will get too strong, most likely. Maybe when the rain sets in again.
Time to go get the winding untangled.
Love y'all,

Very busy day at the park yesterday. I worked the paybooth all day! Towards the end of the day, our parking was full so had to let cars in when cars left (one out=one in) for about an hour. A wind storm started and that solved the parking problem. LOL
Feeling bad today, GERD and Colitis acting up. Lucy (3 mo. Old puppy) woke me up too early this morning, so took her for an early morning walk, which tired her out, and now finished my coffee and bagel for breakfast. I will read for a bit to see if my digestive track settles down some.
Welcome to all the new people! Keep coming back and posting. This is a wonderful bunch of ladies!
Electronic ‘paper-work’ today is all I have planned. Tomorrow going for kidney ultrasound. Wednesday, Lucy goes for second set of puppy shots. I may get my hair cut tomorrow. Will see how I feel then.
Thought for today:
Why did the teacher call her student average?
She was being mean! (Think math!)
What do you call somebody with no body and no nose?
Nobody knows!

Barbara - very glad only minor bruises and scrapes from the "trip".
Lisa - wearing slightly larger/wider shoes to accommodate my orthotics took a lot of getting used to and still bother me at times. Not so much at the sides, but the bigger/longer toe area. My bumpy back yard is full of trip hazards. Hope the orthotics help, by the way. I still have a hand-crank yarn winder around here, what a useful item!
Barbie - I think you had a great, practical approach to design a way of eating that is healthy for you and easy to maintain. I'm to the point that if my eating plan isn't sustainable without a lot of work, then I'm not interested. Some days I'm not sure if that's wisdom or laziness that drives me, lol.
Kylia - hope Granddaughter is OK. I wonder how badly the Tesla was hurt - the ones I see on the road look pretty sturdy.
Beth - I also see the car lots and RV lots around here jammed, so I'm sure you'll find a good deal on a new truck when your DH is ready. Regarding the mattress, which one are you testing right now that your DH really likes? It would be great if you can get 2 twins, one to suit each of you.
Lorna - I can't rely on "willpower" to avoid snacks so have to make extreme effort to only keep healthy ones in the house. Even so, I can binge on nuts easily.
I was a Weight-Watcher most of my life and watched my weight go up and down, lol. Dropped WW and moved to here MFP several years ago when WW focused on phone apps and had meagre support for computer users.
Glycemic Load - Since I ended up in the pre-diabetic category a year ago, I've done a lot of research on carbs. Not only just carbs, but a deeper dive into the Glycemic Index (GI) and most of all, Glycemic Load (GL). If I mostly focus on foods under 10 on the GL list, I do pretty well. Last night I wanted a snack and chose a handful of raw baby carrots and hummus. Got some satisfying crunch and salt. 😁 And it hardly registered on the GL scale.
I'm attaching links for a few websites that explain more about the GL if anyone is interested. The charts don't always agree with each other, but they are close. I'd love it if MFP could work GL into their food diary. I have to remind myself that serving size matters and the number of servings matter. 😋
Busy day yesterday - checked out Mrs. Roger's Shark Rocket vacuum and liked it a lot, ordered one from Amazon. Planted 6 tomatoes in their containers (5 gallon buckets) so lugged a lot of potting soil around. Mowed the front lawn, and did a little weed whacking out there and need to do more. Finally cleaned up most of the mess under the lean-to attached to the shop (had a collection of yard tools, potting soil, pots, just a buncha crap spread all over, lol.) A few more things to put away and hopefully mow the back yard this afternoon.
Back feels amazingly good today. Yesterday I took an Excedrin with lunch and ibuprofen with supper plus got out my stretch bands and did some "monster walks" and other sideways walking with bands. Examples:
Resistance band for exercise for SI joint, knee, back pain 👍
Cooking this morning. Just boiled some beets to add to salads. Need to steam a bunch of broccoli, and figure out how I'm going to cook that little eggplant I picked up at Winco last week.
Make it a fabulous week, ladies!

Hey guys, just a heads up,
I just spoke to Kim on the phone ( @GodMomKim for those who are new ). She was diagnosed yesterday with a benign brain tumor that is pressing on her optic nerve, and she's in the hospital—they're transferring her to a specialist hospital there in California, and the surgery to remove the tumor will be done there, probably later today. Hopefully home tomorrow or the next day at the latest.
She's shaken, but in good spirits, and her housemate has taken off time to be there for her and with her as she needs. So glad that young man is in her life right now!
She went to the doc because she had noticed the loss of her peripheral vision while driving; they did the MRI yesterday afternoon that showed the tumor, and slapped her in the hospital last night. They're pumping her full of steroids now to get the swelling around it to subside. Prognosis is good; it's benign and in a very operable place.
I asked her before I posted this, and she gave me permission to let you know. Please send your good wishes her way. Will update as soon as I hear from her.
Love,
Lisa in AR9 -
So very sorry to hear the news about Kim! Prayers and big hugs that all goes well! Thanks Lisa for letting us know!

😀 Having a simple healthy nutritious eating plan works for me because it cuts down on decision fatigue because I don't "decide" or "choose" a meal or snack. It's already been decided. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about what to eat to what to buy at the grocery store. I don't make impulse food purchases that require designing a meal to go with what I just bought. I make single portions so there are no tempting leftovers to grab later.
😀 A lot of what I do is the result of taking a regular personal inventory (inspired by the Twelve Steps). Not only do I inventory my resentments and fears, I also inventory my daily plan and my finances as do a lot of you. If it works, don't fix it, and if it doesn't serve you well find something that does.
😀 For a long time I rarely posted on this thread. Recently I tried posting while I ate my breakfast and continued to be frustrated because it suddenly got late and I wanted to get in the shower and get going on walking the dogs, so this morning it occurred to me that I could post while I have my mid-morning snack. Dogs and I have been walked and I'm seated with my plate of Dave's Killer Bread toast with cream cheese and sliced green olives. I facilitate a meeting on Zoom starting at 8:45, but this time is mine.
😪💓 I know Kim isn't reading this but I am sending so many healing wishes her way. How fortunate that she has that young housemate in her life and that she responded immediately to troubling symptoms. Thank you, Lisa, for telling us.
😀 My snack choices each day are prunes, plum tomatoes, pecans, and string cheese. I have some of each during the day. They are satisfying, require no preparation, and aren't the sort of thing to eat in giant quantities. I make sure I have them on my shopping list so I don't run out.
😀 Today I am grateful that Jake wanted us to move into this house in 2011 because he wanted less yard to care for. Most of what has to be cared for in the yard was chosen by me—iris, vegetable planting, other bulbs. Jake's the one who picked out the tools that make things easier—battery powered mower, trimmer, blower, and stainless steel hoses.
😀 Beth, every time we have been looking for a car or a house, I tell myself that the one I want isn't on the market yet, that someone is deciding they want to sell it and it will appear when I'm ready for it. Best wishes on your truck search.

Hi Everyone! I'm back to Myfitness, it's been awhile since I have used this app and it's always my go to when I need to shed some weight. Originally, I was 237 lbs and got down to 170. In September, I shattered my tibia plateau and broke both my fibula and tibia in multiple places while on vacation in Scotland. (on Day 3 of 15)…
Needless to say, I have gained back 11 lbs and am having a very difficult time losing it due to my new standards of living. Currently, I cannot function or exercise like I once used to. After about 1,200 steps, my leg becomes quite painful. I keep telling myself, this too shall pass.
Trying to get my youngest to join with me and be my accountability buddy, any encouraging words to help get her motivated to join??? :-)

Lisa - thank you for the Kim news! Sorry to hear but glad it was caught quickly and is benign.
Kim - if you are reading, best wishes for a speedy recovery. Sending gentle (((HUGS)))
Pip - glad Kirby is making his trip and that you guys have things figured out with Toby when it's his time. When Sophie was failing I had to force myself to stay in the moment and be grateful for all of the good times we had with her instead of being in "waiting" mode and thinking about how much we'd miss her when she was gone. So glad a vet can come to your house. (((HUGS)))
Machka - I admire the way you are going forward with exercise, diet and activities even though you are heading into winter right now and you have a heavy workload. Great job on the weight loss.
Heather - glad you are feeling better. Love reading about all the fun with the grands.
Barbie - thank you for posting your snack this morning. I'm always open for good snack ideas that don't take a lot of work and are healthy and satisfying. Anyone else have favorites they'd like to share?
This morning - right before I read Lisa's message about Kim - I looked out the kitchen window and saw a doe walking back toward the power line which is now pretty stark with the trees gone. Out of the corner of my eye I saw some other movement and two very very tiny spotted fawns were on the other side of the fence wanting to get over with mommy. They were still wobbly. With Rosie here I knew she'd never leave them in peace even if I opened the gate into the back yard. Mommy jumped back over the fence, and they disappeared. I hope they made it to a forested area where they can be safe.

Lorna, so sorry you got trolled! Most of us here don’t do the friend thing and we’ve all had “men” who try to friend us. We get most of our MFP social interaction thru this thread. One thing that works for me for the night time bingeing is flossing and brushing my teeth. Once they are clean for the night, I’m much less likely to snack. The trick, of course, is cleaning the teeth….
For the gal in Texas who loves Vancouver Island, I do too! My only experience with Texas involved a tropical storm whose name I can’t recall and 40.5 hours at the airport in Houston. Not the best ending for our cruise. C’est la vie.
Evelyn, Vancouver Island
