I am a little younger than you, but the first field I went into was Engineering Technology and of the 100-odd students in that area in the college I went to, 5 of us were female.
Then I ventured into Software Development and again, the ladies were outnumbered by the guys.
I've been in a lot of fields (education and experience) - some were more evenly split but several were heavy on the male side. Where I am now is quite evenly split which is nice.
My main sport is cycling, especially long distance cycling, and in my cycling organisation the ladies are really badly outnumbered. I'm the only woman on the national committee and the only woman on our regional committee.
But I've always been active.
I'm thankful that my parents encouraged me to be active and to go into whatever field I wanted.

😀 I am older than most of you. When I went to college women had a curfew in the dormitory but men did not. Women were expected wear skirts or dresses to evening meals and when in town. Things have changed since then. Now all the dorms are coed and no one has a curfew.
😀 Debbie, I loved the pictures of Kobe and the wetlands. I, too, get more steps when walking than I do when dancing.
😀 Lorna, nice balance between fitness and family. I've never been to Maine but I've read countless books set in Maine and watched videos of the Appalachian Trail route in Maine.
😀 Lanette, a fawn and chickens. You're right that it doesn't get better than that.
😀 Michele, Jake painted ceramics. His ceramic painting area shared space with the room I dance in. He didn't have nearly the interesting variety that you have. I have a few pieces that are seasonal and I put them out on the stump in front of the house.
😀 Afternoons are too warm for me now, so working in the yard will have to happen in the morning this week—fence washing, weed pulling, watering. It's too soon to transplant the seedlings in the pots. Yesterday someone offered me a cucumber seedling and I declined because I remembered that in years past I tried a cucumber plant and couldn't eat all the cucumbers it produced.
👀 I got a text yesterday that my new glasses are ready (it's only been six days and they predicted 7-10 days) so at 10:00 Annie and I will get in the car and drive to town. I have two books waiting on hold at the library so it will a very productive excursion.

BMR/BMI: I have an app on my phone that I use for this. I’ve had it for a long time. Here are my stats today. Makes me pay more attention to my diet!
I had a great time on my trip! The Colitis attack didn’t start until yesterday. I came home on last Friday. Probably the change in diet. I’m not as young as I used to be! LMAO!
My favorite picture from the trip. This was taken the day I got there. My friend in the picture is only 27 years old. I became a surrogate grandmother to her when she was working her at the park.
Ultrasound yesterday went well. I have not gotten the results yet. I’m keeping an eye out. No reason for there to be a problem.
Vet for Lucy tomorrow afternoon. Second set of shots and worming before spaying. She is doing good and learning fast. Now to get her to stop biting me! I will ask the vet is there something I can use on my hands and arms to deter her. A natural oil/skin cream/sun lotion that would deter her. Anyone here have any ideas?
Thought for the day:
My husband said I should do lunges to stay in shape.
That would be a BIG step forward!

Hey, guys - spoke to Kim, she's doing well, trying to get ahead of her embroidery business contracts a bit to give herself a few days off to recover. Surgery's at 6 a.m. She said to say thank you to all of you for your thoughts and good wishes.

Rita ~ That is a great photo of you and your young friend! Looking at the photos of your trip was interesting especially the ones of that very high off the ground building with lots of stairs.
Lisa ~ Thanks again for keeping us informed about Kim.

Thanks ProudlyBlonde Lynn respresenting the blonde community. It’s tough job but somebody has to do it! ;) No need for specific location but general locale helps us keep you straight in our minds, would you be comfortable with something like Rocky Mountains or Gulf Coast?
Barbie, oops I see you beat me to it, thanks. Remind me what happened to your kitchen light?
Lorna you must be so proud! And not just of your son/grandson .;)
Debbie great pics. Kobe looks so healthy, you’ve really done him a TON of good. Whooshing clear thoughts for the scan.
Allie defective CGM giving false low surgar alarms? That’s scary!
Lanette lucky little fawn! Our powerline is in deep woods (and yes blackberries and salal) and on such a slope there’s no way we could mow. They come through every decade or so and clear trees.
Tracey being able to block future mfp friend requests is a great idea!
Heather good job re-homing the winter duvet.
Machka ah. I meant face-planted in bed and was out for the count. . . ;) Three rest days and I’m recovered from the root trip fall, Thanks! Con VERY gratulations on the size change, that really is the best!
Rita like the pic, LOVED the lunges… ;)

I went to get my watch and was delighted to put it on. I got to the bus stop and it had stopped. I had to walk quite a way back to the shop! They've taken it back in to adjust the angle of the hands. Boo!
So that was a bust!! I did buy some gorgeous artisan seeded sourdough bread and got them to slice it. I then got off the bus a stop early to buy Dim Sum and a lovely bunch of flowers. Arrived home knackered!
In the morning I shifted some boxes upstairs around to prepare for DSIL. Made progress, but more to do. I had put all my excess bedroom stuff up there. There is still a collection of books on the stairs! Also found some beautiful paper we bought in Florence 22 years ago that I'd forgotten about. Her washed bedding is drying. Vacuuming and dusting tomorrow. I will spruce my bathroom on Friday, before she arrives, as I am still using it.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Lanette – awesome about the fawn!
After work went to WalMart then to take the sandwich to my neighbor then home. Safelite came here to fix the chip in my windshield. Made haddock for later in the week. Vince is at bowling right now (he’s subbing). Looks like we won’t get the deck until the second or third week of July, but I’m thinking it’ll be more like August or September unless Mother Nature gets her meds straightened out, which I doubt will happen
Go for my shot of Prolia tomorrow. Ordered the cake to take up to Steve’s this weekend. Didn’t realize it, but I have an eye md appt for Sept.
Lisa – again, thanks for keeping us updated about Kim. Praying things go well
Vince probably won’t be home from bowling until around 4 (it’s 3now). The guy from Safelite was here and the guy about the deck called, so I think I’ll take a walk.

Hello, extraordinary ladies;
I had 2 days of doctor visits. Both of my doctors moved to a new location. I used ways to figure it out. Today, I forgot to bring the note card I had written to remind me of which office to visit. I was on the wrong floor, but they gave me directions. My Allergist was so pleased with how well-controlled my Asthma is. He advised that my outdoor experience would be challenging when it gets hot in Mississippi. He told me to moisturize my skin and stop taking the Benadryl. It causes early dementia. He ordered Atarax instead. My GP is concerned about my headaches and ordered an MRI. So we will see what happens.
Kim, I'm praying for you and sending you positive vibes.
Tracey, I am over the moon proud of you and your accomplishments. I love the way you decorate. You have great taste and an artistic eye.
Lisa, that's how I gained the pounds. I didn't want my uncle to notice me or care about me. Any male attention made me uncomfortable. I was at the grocery store, and this man was looking at me with his wife right next to him. I picked out my fruit and left. I am happiest at home.
I'm looking forward to doing my crafts again. I wish I could crochet as well as you. I will learn by practicing. I do not understand why these men are targeting their family members. This one baby we have was born without a face and was not only the daughter to the mom but also the sister. They have undergone some surgeries to alter her appearance, but she still looks scary. She has no eyes. My other uncle on my mom's side propositioned my cousin, who was only 18 that he would treat her well if she slept with him. My uncle, who started messing with me at the age of 7, has done this to many kids, including his daughter. It is so sick!Allie, Delia is such a pretty girl, and Miles is so cute! I'm glad you're doing well.
Matchka, I need to post all the books I've read on Goodreads. I have been documenting them on my Reading List card. I hope you will enjoy swimming soon.
Lanette, That was so cool to see and touch that beautiful fawn. Your hens are so lovely and chunky.
Elaine, I know you have seen a lot as a trial lawyer. I hope you enjoyed your career. I was torn about becoming a lawyer. The calling was louder to be a nurse. Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. Do you want to travel and try new things? The possibilities are endless.
Lorna, one of my favorite vacations was in Maine. I was obsessed with the blueberries. My best friend and I went, and we stayed in Portland, Maine. We visited Bar Harbor, Kennebunkport, and Acadia National Park. I hope to go back again soon. It was breathtakingly beautiful there. The pictures pop up on my phone, and my heart warms again. Everyone was so lovely.
Lynne, Have you ever played racquetball? That is fun, too. Pickleball is all of the rage these days. I tried to get DH to play, but he had no interest. I used to play racquetball with my ex-boyfriend, but I broke his leg going after the ball, and that was the end of us playing that game. When I was in college, I took up tennis with my bestie. We would spend more energy laughing than playing. Welcome to the group.
Carol, thanks for the hugs, and I am sending you hugs too.
Margaret, thank you; it's hard, and I almost cried.
Barbara, some people do not divide the workload evenly. I could be working my butt off while some nurses have time to do an art project or watch TV on their phone. At least the night charge was beneficial, and another nurse joined in.
DH came into town on Sunday, and I had to tell him that I needed peace. Monday is my coma day. I slept and tried to de-stress. He complained about my diffuser, and I told him that it was part of my healing. DH got my car tags, which was nice cause I hate doing that stuff. DS finally used his resource( his cousin ), who is a Tisch Alumnus, to connect him with someone who will have him as an intern for the summer. Now he can get his $5,000. Julia received a check from State Farm as a result of the accident. So now she will get a car. DH is still applying, and I found some jobs for him to apply to from my old job in Chicago. So, stay tuned, everyone.
Have fun and stay safe, ladies.
XO,
Mo in Mississippi.

Michele and Mo - yeah, pickleball was all the rage when I lived in CO and it seems it’s caught on here too! Have toyed with the idea, but I’m a terrible doubles player. 😬 For now, I’m just trying to keep dropping weight and increasing some light activity to unfreeze my knees and ditch the sedentary life that’s had me in its clutches for the last 3 years.
Don’t know much about her, but it seems Kim is very loved by this group and I’m wishing her well as she goes through this undoubtedly scary time.Lynn in Southern CT

Debbie - I just love seeing the wetlands where you walk. I can see why it's you get plenty of steps in on that enjoyable path - no worrying about traffic, no interruptions. You get an ever-changing landscape with the different waterfowl and wildlife you encounter. Plus, a perfect place to walk Kobe.
Rita - so glad you enjoyed the trip with your young friend, she looks like a lot of fun. I remember you talking about her.
Tracey - your living room is gorgeous, you have such a keen eye for design. The shelving is very nice. Remember the days when department stores would have big display windows? Maybe they still do. You'd be great at that job.
Heather - a shame about your watch. GGRR! But at least you were able to get some shopping done. How log is DSIL staying?
Lorna - how terrific you and your son/grandson are taking Karate. What a great way for you to keep in shape and get good exercise and stay on top of balance and strength. And spend quality time with him! Your future body thanks you for staying active.
I'm 73 and have had to tone down my activity due to injuries and surgeries over the past 20 years. I get irked about it, but am very grateful I can still "housewalk" and carry weights, do stretches and a bit of Tai Chi - helps keep me in shape for things I want to do when I'm 93. 😁
Mo - Good to hear DH is there and helping you get things done, and that your son's internship came through. $5000 is nice! What is he majoring in by the way? Glad the one nurse came and helped you. Hope the MRI doesn't show any anomalies - good to get these headaches checked out. Do you think your asthma would be better in Chicago?
The ENT I used to go to moved to the Olympia WA area from Michigan and said he was surprised he needed to take allergy shots out here on the "wet side" of Washington. We have some nasty allergens that aren't present in the Midwest. I took massive allergy shots for a few years then had to quit when I had gallbladder surgery and never picked it up again. At least I'm not getting headaches from allergies, just plugged up ears, itchy eyes I take drops for, semi-plugged nose. Allergy meds like Nasonex dry me out too much and I get nosebleeds so I just deal with it. I heard that about Benadryl and there are a number of meds linked to dementia. My DH was on generic Nexium for many years to combat stomach issues caused by taking prednisone for his RA. I wonder if contributed to his memory loss.
Questions-
- Have any of you ladies taken the AARP Driving class? They told me I could save $50 a year on my Hartford car insurance.
- Does anyone eat the skin on Kiwi? I bought some golden Kiwi that are just about ripe and not real hairy so I'm wondering if I could just eat them like an apple. Co-pilot says yes, wash them good.
Had a nice breakfast this morning with my former walking partner D. Was able to make a lot of good substitutions. I had a scrambled egg and 2 delicious pieces of bacon. Swapped the hash browns for some sliced tomato, toast for a great little fresh fruit bowl.
Warm and muggy here this afternoon, the weather is gearing up for a hot spell by the weekend.

Lisa: Thank you for keeping us updated re Kim. Is there a way to get her address? I'd love to send a card.
Mo: Of all the horrors possible to victims of incest, being born without a face must be near the top of the list. I hope you find pain free days. peace and professional acknowledgement you so deserve.
Michele: I remember seeing your pool when you were just starting to paint ceramics. Great job amassing your collection.
Machka: I keep meaning to comment on your swimming lessons. I learned as a toddler and have lived with pool access most of my life. I LOVE swimming in the open ocean, and for this reason I recommend you learn to breathe from BOTH sides. When I do laps in the pool or swim in open ocean, I breath every 3rd stroke and that forces me to use both sides. In ocean, you have to be able to turn your head away from incoming waves. Your beaches are so beautiful. I'd love to jump in for a swim.
I'm happily taking a break from work and sporting events. Instead I'm spending more time with books, movies and learning all I can about Morocco. Haven't put a deposit down yet, but it's looking good that I'll be going there for a holiday in November. So, also have downloaded Babbel in order to refresh my very rusty French.
Mars the Leash-Loving Cat is asleep at the foot of my bed. He is snoring!! Makes me want to lie down and nap for a bit. Stay well friends. We can do this.

This is such an amazing group of women! I really like it here.
I had a pre-trial conference early this morning about 30 miles away. Conference went smoothly. My opposing counsel is young and inexperienced. I ended up introducing him to the judge because he didn't know to introduce himself. I enjoy being a lawyer. I don't think I will miss it. My husband says that I don't have time to miss it because I still get calls from clients. For a long while, I had a really mean paralegal. She did almost perfect work and she was mean to my clients so I gave them all my cellphone number so that they wouldn't have to deal with her.
Today, after court, I went to Pilates then to the garden center to buy mulch. Our realtor (we are getting ready to sell our home and hope to move to the mid-Atlantic area) told me that it looks nice for the mulch to match the roof —- our roof is both gray and brown so I got cedar mulch and organic Texas hardwood — I think that I will have to mix them to match the roof. And I think this is a crazy idea but I am willing to try.
A few years ago, we lost a tree because it got poisoned by a leaky gas line. All of my shrubs on that side of the house were shade loving and I lost them shortly after we lost the tree. I am just now putting new shrubs in —- for someone else to enjoy.
Mallie —- your grandchildren are beautiful. I so enjoy seeing picture of the littles. And especially gingers - both of my husbands are red heads. That doesn't sound right - my first husband and my current husband are both red heads.
Mo —- to care for a child without a face is so heartbreaking. My heart goes out to you and I am so grateful for the work that you do.
Pip — what are those numbers at the bottom of your posts? And I love echeveria - its a cute tablescape.
For those of you in the PNW, I am so envious! It is so beautiful there. I remember when I was a kid and I would visit my grandmother in Astoria, she would give us packets of seeds to plant and we could sow them directly into the bed and they would grow. That doesn't happen here in Texas.
My extended family —- my uncle and all 4 of my aunts are still in Oregon. One of the good things about DH is that he is from Oregon and has family there also. As a result, we get to visit often.
Our children and grandchildren are in Virginia and Delaware. So we are hoping to move closer. We thought that my son would be getting a lateral transfer where he currently works but that has not come through. Our current plan is to sell the house and move, then couch-surf until he gets his next job. My son is an only child who married an only child. My DH and I both adore our DIL. Her mother has terrible early onset dementia to the point that she sometimes forgets her name and the fact that she has a child. Her father died many years ago. So, we are planning to move near to them so that we can help.

Lanette I have taken the AARP driver's class numerous times. You have to take it every three years to get the discount. The cost has varied $16-$20. If you get $50 saving for three years that would be 150-about 20 so that is a $130 saving. I took it online and from what I remember you can take it at your own pace. There are quizes and a test at the end. I found the last time I took it more time was spent on the effects of meds and physical changes that can make driving more difficult. I am probably due to take it again if I want to continue to get a discount. They did add a section on roundabouts. I think it takes about 8-10 hours to complete.
I am a member of AARP so I should start watching for when they offer it at a discount. They do that periodically.

Rori - I have been to Morocco twice with John, first for our honeymoon, under our own steam, and once on a long private tour, by car. So, a total of five weeks. I love it, and it has the bonus, for me, of being French speaking! Especially in Rabat. Their French is much more comprehensible than French French. 😁 Much slower. A lot of people also speak English. I think we went to every area, Atlantic seaside, Atlas mountains, Sahara desert, Marrakesh, Fez etc. We were invited into people's homes for mint tea. The Sahara at dawn is a sight to remember. So many marvels to see.
Dentist check up today! Plus preparing for DSIL. She's only staying for one night, but you still have to do all the prep. I will get John to carry the vacuum cleaner up the two flights of stairs. It's very steep!
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx (thinking of Kim 💗)

I’m winding down for summer break. Attendance at our groups tends to drop away during June as people take advantage of lower season prices for holidays. And as our age demographic is mostly seniors, many of them look after grandkids in the summer holidays

📍Daily weight fluctuations are normal, and can be more than 2 lbs a day for no apparent reason.
📍A general downward trend is what we are looking for. Eating out can cause apparent weight gain because of high sodium levels, but usually goes quickly. Drinking extra water helps with this.

📍Plateaus are a normal part of the process. The body is consolidating and adapting to your new way of eating/exercising.
📍The closer you get to your goal weight, the more difficult it becomes to lose weight, as your body becomes more efficient at using what you feed it.
📍When you exercise you build muscle, which takes up less space than fat, so use measurements as well as weight to assess your progress.

Rori, the problem is that I can't breathe at all.
I've done some research and I think what's happening with my breathing when I swim is "breath stacking".
"Breath stacking in swimming occurs when a swimmer does not exhale adequately before taking another breath in, resulting in a residual volume of air staying in the lungs. This is common in cases where the swimmer utilizes an upper chest pattern of breathing because of over-reliance on the accessory muscles, thoracic stiffness and reduced diaphragm use. When breath stacking occurs, the swimmer does not refresh their entire lung volume, effectively starving the working muscles of fresh oxygen."Respiratory-dysfunction-in-Swimmers.pdf
"Most athletes worry about the inhalation, but putting emphasis on the inhalation, rather than the exhalation means you end up “breathe stacking” – you take one breath on top of the next and before you know it you feel like you can’t take a full breath."
I'm good when climbing stairs, cycling up hills, in stressful situations and when I am having my blood pressure taken because I use the Physiological Sigh which focuses on the exhale. I learned many years ago that focusing on the exhale and just letting the inhale happen was a great way to keep my Exercise Induced Asthma under control.Of course, the Physiological Sigh inhales through the nose under normal situations, but when I'm pushing up a hill or am in a sprint, I'll do the double breath in with my mouth rather than nose. The main thing is to focus on the exhale.
Physiological Sighs Are Scientifically Proven to Reduce Anxiety
So, when I'm swimming, I feel like I'm not exhaling enough before it is time to inhale. The first thing I do when my nose and mouth come out of the water is to finish exhaling. Then when I try to inhale, I feel like there's a blockage and I can't take a full breath. Everything gets all tight and I can only inhale a tiny bit. It doesn't take long before I'm out of air entirely.
Now one thing these articles suggest is to exhale through the nose into the water. I've been exhaling through the mouth because that's what I do when climbing stairs, cycling up hills, etc. So I will try exhaling just through my nose. In other words, I'll try doing the opposite to my usual Physiological Sigh ... exhale through my nose, inhale through my mouth.
I might also try some of these exercises:Importance of thoracic mobility in swimming and tennis, Spring Physio blog

Machka - I know from other people that the breathing is the most difficult thing. I am a good swimmer, and I know that it is because I have the breathing right. I exhale slowly and deliberately the whole time my face is in the water, so I can see and hear it. Then , when I come up, to the side, I can take a good breath. I often count my breathing length to my strokes. I usually breathe on one side, so, 'one two three four breathe' bubbling out the whole time. I can breathe on both sides, which would be 'one two three breathe'. It's a measured breathing out, very steady, with the effort the same throughout. Do you have a bath you can practice in?
Off to the dentist, plus picking up a prescription. Weather miserable.
Heather UK xxxxxxxx

I can do 6 - 8 strokes with my face in the water, while breathing out and bubbling away, before I feel like I need to take a breath.
It's possible I need to breath out faster.
