June Goal: 140 Miles
6/1: 11.02 miles
6/2: 6.06 miles
6/3: 3.33 miles
6/4: 6.05 miles
6/5: 6.02 miles
6/6: 6.04 miles
6/8: 10.26 milesI thought I posted Friday's run, but I don't see it. I ran a 6 mile threshold run. It was hot, but uneventful.
I took Saturday as a rest day. There was a blood drive at work on Friday and I donated, so it was a good day for a rest. I also stubbed my toes at Wal-Mart when I was grocery shopping. It hurt at the time, but it is fine now. I do have a bruise and a chipped toenail though.
Today I ran 10 slow miles. It was so hot. There was a storm to the north that gave me some cloud cover, but it was still hot and humid. I saw two jackrabbits today and a cottontail rabbit. Plus I saw 4 horses running in a pasture. They were beautiful.
This afternoon has been pretty stressful. One of my nephews is bipolar and he's gone off his meds. He's been sending hateful texts to the family and we are all pretty worried about him. We are also expecting some bad storms tonight, so that's just an added stress.
@AlphaHowls I am so sorry for your loss. I know that is especially hard with your mom.
48.77/140 miles completed for June

42 of 225k for the month. Yesterday, finally got out to do some elevation training, it wasn't pretty, in terms of how my legs felt. 8k 700m gain. Took me 1:20 to get to the top. Used to be able to huff it in 1:05. Need more practice. Tried to make a friend, he said nope. A mountain raven, big fellas. A bit smoky from all the wildfires. Ok you seniors out there, how to do you deal with declining performance as we age. My brain thinks I'm still 20 but the body is going nah…..
8 -
@daria919 Sorry that you had to wait for an Ortho appointment. I hope you find out good news today.
Nice pre-drive run @John772016 .
Sorry for your loss @AlphaHowls . You are having a very rough go of it these days. Hugs and prayers.
Nice running @kgirlhart . I'm glad that you didn't hurt your toes worse than you did. So sorry about your nephew too. I hope he gets back on his meds and everything turns out okay.
You're doing great @chris_in_cal .
Great running @tarun_yadavA and @ContraryMaryMary .
Looking forward to the run-sees and food pictures @tarun_yadavA .
Beautiful view from the top @WarmJellyfish . Part of that huffing and puffing and slower pace was probably due to the smoke.
5 -
In my experience I can take on humility and wisdom, or my body will foist it upon me. We get to choose. Choose wisely amigo. :)
4 -
@chris_in_cal the body is already making its demands known by shutting down stuff 🤣
3 -
@WarmJellyfish how to deal with injuries/old age/declining performance.
Realize we have GOSA injuries.
Getting Old Sucks A S S

Posting two days again.
Yesterday, before mom and I had lunch, we received a call from my nephew. They had decided to have an impromptu birthday party for his son….had told us they weren't going to do anything because they were going to be gone the week before and the week after his birthday. We decided to go, so I came home and did a quick mile on the driveway to keep the streak going and then we headed out to the party. It was fun and we got to see most of the family.
Today I did a run while procrastinating making the phone call to purchase my new car. (I'm excited about the car, just not about spending the money or going through the procedure required to get it. LOL) Since I was putting off the call, I ran further than I had intended. I guess this is one of the only times that procrastination was a good thing. Anyway, I walked 0.35 miles for warm up and then ran/walked at a fairly easy pace except for the last 0.26 miles, then walked a total of 1.14 miles for cool down. The run splits were 13:15, 12:39, 12:39 (for 0.75 miles) and 8:30 (for 0.26 miles). I was very pleased with the sprint at the end. Avg HR was 129 with a max of 163 bpm.

I think we all hate getting older. Injuries are one think but age-related ones are particularly frustrating. That and the lengthy recovery. Sucks.
5k for me today. Butt was sore from Pilates but running helped. Winter has finally arrived here - grey, wet, and only 15 degrees (59F).
7 -
Morning all.
I got in 3.72 miles at 10'23
7 -
Well am I not a living breathing example of injuries… LOL.
Seriously tho I decided this year that I was NOT going to give in to the "we can only maintain" as we get older and pushed myself really hard in Jan-April to lose 5 pounds and my avg daily mileage - for almost 150 days was over 7. About double last year.
Of course then I tripped and now my mileage is pretty zilch but I think if I was younger I would still be in the same boat and perhaps it will take longer to heal totally at 66 than 36 but damned if I am going to give up. Let's get STRONGER/FASTER and HEALTHIER…
7 -
Ugh my quads are still sore from Sunday. Mondays are recovery days. Garmin tells me a threshold run is planned this evening, lets see.
@ContraryMaryMary I feel your winter pain…
@quilteryoyo new car! Yummm love that smell
5 -
@ContraryMaryMary I always think it is interesting that exercise helps the soreness go away.
Nice "short for you" run @tarun_yadavA .
Let's do it! @SummerSkier . I hope your foot continues to heal and you'll be back to those 7 miles in no time.
I woke up last night with a thought, which can be dangerous. I followed through this morning and signed up for a 5K race in DE. Since I'm going to be there anyway, I might as well get a state off of my list for races. I'm signed up for the Bethany Beach Firecracker 5K Run/Walk. It doesn't sound like a very large race, so we shall see how I do. The route looks pretty flat and ends on the boardwalk along the beach. My bib number is 555. I don't know if that means there are 555 entrants or not. They really didn't have any pictures from last year, so I'm doubting it.

Nice runs folks!
Had a longer note typed(&re-typed) but after the 2nd time that MFP kicked me out and didn't save the drafts, it got shortened! Then when it wouldn't let me update a meal, I gave up on it entirely yesterday…..
Spent a few minutes trying to figure out what GOSA was before giving up & checking the spoiler, I wasn't even remotely close😂June:

Speaking of milestones, got this notification today

@John772016 Technology can be so frustrating. I'd love to hear some of your guesses as to what GOSA was. Great running.
Eight years! That's great @Scott6255 !

It's been a weird day. My landline phone is on the fritz again - since Sunday. It works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. They are supposed to fix it next week. Anyway, because it was out, I had to drive down to mom's this morning for a phone call with the car dealership. I should be getting the Subaru in a couple of days - well, maybe more. No date set yet. Still have to overnight paperwork, get some of the accessories, and get it delivered. But, the deal is made.
This afternoon, the phone being out pushed me to run further than intended. During the run, I stopped and had a chat with our neighbor. I wanted to talk to mom about some of the things he said, so wound up running further so I would end at her house and then walk back home.
I walked a total of 1.75 miles for warm up and cool down - including a false stop tenth. (Decided to run more after I walked that tenth.). I was running at an easy pace and decided, after 1.8 miles, to see how far I could run at a pace of under 11 min/mile instead of a sprint. I'm not really sure how far I could go, because this is when I ran into my neighbor and stopped to talk. I was proud of myself though, because I ran 0.40 miles at a 10:19 min/mile pace (with a stop not counted in the time), and then after 0.10 mile walk, decided to run again and ran 0.3 miles at a 10:00 min/mile pace. That's pretty good for me.
I have a cardiology follow up appointment in the morning. Just my yearly where he will tell me to keep doing what I'm doing, I'm sure.

I thought I saved a draft of my run report yesterday, but I guess I did not, so I am posting two runs again.
Yesterday I ran 6 miles. We had storms overnight on Sunday, and there was lots of water running in the streets and several trash bins and limbs down. I saw a really pretty fox.
Today I ran another 6 miles. We had thunderstorms again this morning, but I managed to get out before they got here. I did get rained on the last couple of miles. I also saw a possum and a skunk.
Here's a question for the group. Recently one of my sister's coworkers asked me how I stayed motivated to run. I really didn't know how to answer, but I have been thinking about it a lot since then. I think for me, it has to do with my reasons for running. Running does allow me to eat more and still keep my weight under control, but that's not really what motivates me. I like to run, and I want to run. I run because I want to, and not because I have to. If I don't get out early and do it, I will probably miss my opportunity, so I get out early because if I don't, then I won't get to run. What motivates you to run?
7 -
Dang, I had to come right after @kgirlhart 's provocative question....I have to think about it for a bit, but I come back around to it.
I ran 1.73M at 12'06, it was more intervals.

I remember the first time i decided to go running - I tried to run down to the letterbox, a distance of about 150 metres, and I couldn’t do it. I was mortified. I was about 18.
That shocked me but it wasn’t enough to get me out there everyday. Through my 20s I’d run sporadically to try and keep my weight down (with little effect as I didn’t appreciate the level or quality of calories I was consuming).
In my early 30s I got my first senior level job and the stress saw me pack on 10kg and that was enough to make me run more regularly. Then I started entering 5k and 10k events, which I enjoyed and found motivating simply trying to better my times.
Then a woman I was sharing an office with, who was an elite runner, offered to help me get my race times down. I did as she said and made huge progress in a very short amount of time. And that got me hooked - trying to better my times, improve my technique, up my stamina. Next thing, I’m running half marathons.
A couple of years later and I’m married with a baby and I ran to keep myself sane - that uninterrupted space for an hour or two was bliss for a new mother.
Then, 10 years on, with covid lockdowns giving me loads of free time, I ran a heap - I had a coach and a plan and got ridiculously fit and surprisingly fast, and that was hugely motivating, and is, in fact, what is driving me these days.
That, and I love being lean (vanity is a perfectly valid reason to run… or is it actually greed that is motivating me? I do love to eat…)
But, regardless of this varying motivation over the years, what it really comes down to is discipline. Sometimes, you’ve just gotta get out there and run, like it or not.

Morning all
I got in 5.2M at 09'53.
To the debates of the day... At 45, I feel old. And I hate it. Can't even sleep through the night without getting up to P33 at least once. Long roadtrips are now painful. Said bladder, and then just back and knees.
And onto running...
Keep Lean, as already pointed out.
Calorie burn is HUGE, and allows me a sweet treat (I have a sweet tooth!), and finally... Those 30-60 mins daily. Fresh air. Me time. Me thoughts. Declutter.
7 -
hahaha.. @tarun_yadavA you are a babe. If you are only getting up once you are doing well! Enjoy every day in the 40's…..
Interesting topic and I think most of you have covered it. The stress relief, the lean feel, the ability to eat more, the shoes….
5 -
Ha, yes @tarun_yadavA just wait another 20 years! Enjoy your youth.
Motivation for running started just as most everyone, to lose weight and get in shape. Now it's just stress relief and chasing that feeling of pushing yourself to do something hard.I actually got outside this morning for a 5K. The knee felt good, but my cardio has really declined! It was a struggle to keep going. I'm a totally different person than the guy who was running a HM every weekend just a year ago. Hopefully we will meet again in the not so distant future.
5 -
I saw that there were some heavy storms come through your area @kgirlhart . I'm glad the damage wasn't worse. Great running.
Nice intervals @chris_in_cal !
Great answer @ContraryMaryMary .
You're only as young as you feel @tarun_yadavA .
I'm glad your knee is doing better @Scott6255 . I predict you will be doing HM again, if the knee behaves.
As for running motivation: Like everyone else it seems, running is the only way I have found to lose weight and sort of keep it off. I do have to keep in mind that "You can't outrun your spoon." which is hard sometimes, as I love to eat too. But, I also love the way that I feel after the run is over and how much healthier I am now than I was in my younger years. The fact that I KNOW beyond a doubt that preparing for a HM before I had my open heart surgery (aneurysm repair) was a big plus in the recovery and that it keeps my heart healthy is another reason I continue to run. As for being motivated on the days I really don't want to do anything - it's the streak I have going. There have been many days that I would have just sat on the couch instead of at least walking a mile if it weren't for that.
