what about checking out Park Run? Isn’t that a national or international group?
Somebody please correct me if I got the name wrong.
1 -
The name is right! They're all over the place.
And, it doesn't need to be a run. It can be a walk or an easy hike. It's hard to find someone with the same running pace as you, but easier to find walkers/hikers. I also find that people love going kayaking. We have rentals around here, but I also own two of them.

Thanks for suggestion @AnnPT77 I'll check that out. Unfortunately, the closest running store is 35-minute drive away, but who knows, maybe they'll plan some runs up in my neighborhood. Right now, I'm working up to a 10K. I used to do 10Ks all the time but suffered with COVID (3 times despite getting vax) and got long haulers cough. Finally recovered completely and back to running. slower than I was before, but can complete a 5K. Just wish it wasn't so hot here. (record breaking heat this summer).
Hope everyone else is doing great! Keep moving!

@BigDfromNJ : It has been really hard to get back to running this year after an injury in the fall. I also had COVID, and I've been wondering how much that affected me. It's been a long slow recovery and I'm still slow! Of course, I'm also 64y, but hey!

Fifteen or so years ago, I got a prescription for joint pain. Five bouts of rheumatic fever (not diagnosed til the fifth time, repeating in the classic 7-year cycles) have played havoc with my joints. I took it for a while but decided, if I start taking arthritis meds at this age, and get used to them, what’ll I do when I’m older, really need them, and they’re no longer effective?
So I stopped and sucked it up for fifteen years.
Finally told my doc I was ready for something that would help. Was on Celebrex a month and all it did was tickle the GERD back into life. That was a no go. GERD (or the bitter memory of) wins over joint pain every time.So I switched to Meloxicam last weekend. Spent two days and nights with every possible joint singing to me, and was miserable.
Got up Sunday, and after a few minutes, realized I hadn’t staggered out of bed, wasn’t all hunkered over making the bed, didn’t limp to the bathroom and didn’t hand-over-hand it going down the stairs to let the dog out for his first wizz of the day. In fact….i felt great. Like twenty years younger great.
Did my hardest class of the week this afternoon and it felt better than it has in recent memory. I don’t feel swollen and inflamed in the morning. I don’t ache sitting down. I’m not feeling “nappy” in the afternoons, and have had enough energy to get up and do chores I’d let go lately.
I am praying there’s no side effects with the Meloxicam. And I’m glad I waited, so I didn’t build up a tolerance. This stuff is a miracle.
I could sit around and whine about the joint pain- and often do (poor, patient husband!)- but in truth, I’m lucky as hell I didn’t get the heart problems that typically go with it, and I’m so so grateful for that.

Interesting conversation I overheard at my senior water aerobics class this morning. 3 people discussing their weight and eating habits. One of them said she quit dieting, eating healthy, and worrying about what she was eating anymore, because when you get old your appetite naturally diminishes and you will eat less. So she KNOWS it's ok to eat anything she wants because she will slim down and lose weight without any effort because of that. Just has to wait a few more years to be skinny. Hmmmmmm….. I guess it's good she was at the aerobics class.

That's hilarious, but also sad.
Kind of the flip side of a conversation I overheard at my spin class in which women who were probably 30-something said they needed to do things like spin class now, because they wouldn't be able to do it when they got older. 🙄😆 (I was right there, and pretty obviously around twice their age!)

😂 oh, Ann. Man oh man oh man. The biithness of youth.
I hear more crazy stuff in the hot tub after aquafit than you can shake a stick at, generally from an older, obese woman who has decided she is the gym authority on weight loss.
I used to hop in after laps. (I do laps while husband does aquafit.). Not lately. The one time my head swiveled around and I disagreed vociferously, it was pretty clear that no one wanted advice from the thin, fit woman. I’ve given up on showing fatty photos to prove “I was one of you no so long ago”. It’s not worth the disbelief, the what did you do?, the eyes shuttering when I reply “counted calories and exercised”.
anyway, I came to share my latest friend request. It is just OTT and I am burning mad. Profile pic is a guy AND his ford pickup AND his very elderly, very toothless mom, with her arm around him.Who would be suspicious of a guy, his truck and his elderly mom?
I immediately did a google image search and it comes back to the IG page of a totally different name, belonging to some guy who is an actor.
That’s just disgusting, stealing a pic of a guy and his MOM so you can get over on somebody else.

@springlering62 is on a tear!
I’ve never looked like more of an a-hole than when moved to give diet advice to any large-ish person anywhere, even if it’s the topic of conversation! When people have weight to lose, I have to remember to let them do the talking. The most I'll say these days is “I dropped a little weight recently.“ If they ask “how” I say “calorie counting” and leave it at that. No one really wants to hear it, I’ve found. Until they post something to an anonymous chat board!

@springlering62 I wish I had someone pop in and give me advice. Don't stop being you. Helpful suggestions may not be taken by all, but if you help just 1 person, it's worth it! I hope you won't keep your keyboard silent with this group. Suggest / Advise away, I'm listening!!

Out in real life, the trouble is that most people who pop in and give advice give the advice that's boosted in tabloids and on the internet, and most of that is over-elaborate nonsense. The culture is steeped in nonsense about health and weight management, so the audience is primed to believe it, too.
I've mentioned the acquaintance who indignantly insisted that we had to eat low carb to lose weight "because over the Winter she had read all the books and they all said that." It was unconvincing to her I'd lost tens of pounds over that same Winter, eating lots of carbs, and she'd see the size drop off me - even had meals with me occasionally in which I'd been eating carbs.
On top of that, so many people have tried to lose weight so many times, without significant lasting success, that they think there has to be a hack or a trick. (Tabloids and the internet reinforce that "hack" idea, too.)
Pretty much no one wants to hear our tedious, non-trendy, patience-requiring, boring but potentially successful approach, even if we demonstrate that it works.
I don't normally talk about it in regular life either, other than - at most - the brief "I lost about 50 pounds 10 years ago, kept it off since, by calorie counting normal food and doing my usual exercise". Or just "I lost from obese to this weight at age 59".
If someone asks interested questions, I'll answer them, but others are right: The normal reaction is that people's eyes glaze over, and they turn back to the overweight person touting the supposedly latest and greatest. Only one person in my life ever listened, got serious, lost around 20 pounds. She was surprised how simple the process was, not miserable.
Here on MFP, it's a different bet. I think we still don't convince many, but I for one haven't stopped typing about what has worked for me, and how valuable it has been to quality of life. I want other people to succeed, sincerely. At least here, the people who don't buy in generally just disappear: We don't have to see the eyes glaze over. 😆 I think the Community wins a few, though.
Another weirdness: After a while of being at a healthy weight, overweight friends - people who'd been there through my weight loss - started classifying me as one of those "naturally slim" people who "eat whatever they want, whenever they want". That's another reason not to listen to me, it seems. 🙄
Denial is real. I think I did it for years myself: If weight loss - long term loss - wasn't really possible, I was off the hook about even trying. 🤷♀️

@AnnPT77 That thing about being “naturally slim and in shape” made me smile. I just got that comment— after a year of struggling to lose weight and reclaim some level of fitness. It’s been really hard work! I didn’t correct them, I just smiled and said “thanks!”

gigantic iced coffee with cold foam:
2 cups cold brew coffee (via aeropress) 5 calories
One 30gr serving fat free half and half 20 calories
1/3 cup skim milk (27 calories) beaten in a Ninja hand frother with 2 drops vanilla extract and maybe a teaspoon of sugar free simple syrup
52 calories total. This was lovely!!!! Very satisfying and surprisingly satiating to boot.4 -
I think tomorrow I’ll give a coffee granita another whack. Any suggestions? The one up at the terrific Roman pizza place up the street is terrific. The owner gave me a sample but said I wouldn’t be happy with the calorie count.
I’m thinking maybe coffee mixed with some Ghirardelli ground sweet chocolate, pulverized with ice and half and half? I think I might could pull it off for about 100 calories?

Hi Everyone—65F just started back on MFP about a week ago. Have about 100 pounds to lose. Starting around 240 and aiming for 140. Love the community and support here. I look forward to sharing this space with all of you.
Tammy 😉

Welcome Tammy! I don't comment very often, but I am here. Glad to see more faces😊

Well, I am almost 60. Does that count? I will be 60 in April.

our (very authentic) Roman pizzeria serves affogato! Had never heard of it, so Raphael gave me one on the house to try and I loved it!
This sounds intriguing but I have no idea what a frau (fra?) Angelica tastes like, so no idea what to use for a sub?I bet this might be fun with some of my homemade vanilla ice cream, too.
Would this send me climbing the walls before bedtime?
Have thought about trying ricotta as a Special Occasion ice cream base. I might give that a whack today to freeze for tomorrow’s dessert, with some fresh strawberries or peaches. I’ve got one container left of strawberry ice cream I made with yogurt, fresh berries, vanilla bean scrapings, a dash of extract, and coconut water. No sweeteners added and it turned out delicious!Anyone who says that cutting calories is hard needs to put their imagination to work!
Tonight we will treat the dog (and us, of course!) to Cookout for dinner. Their tray with a double burger and double onion rings is under 600 calories. 👍🏻 I told him when we went out for morning wee, “I’ve got a surprise for you later!” and he has been glued to me ever since. Will not take his eyes off me, lol. Who says animals don’t understand? It always amazes me how fewer calories breaded onion rings are than French fries. “Dry” crunchy onion rings instead of the drippy greasy variety, that is.

welcome @tammyroberts4070 and @tufntender
hope you’ll participate frequently!!!!1 -
From the internet:
Fun fact: Frangelico is a very nutty liqueur, so expect it to show in its flavor and aroma. This liqueur has a delicate balance of sweet richness and hazelnut, with hints of coffee, cocoa, and vanilla.

Blended Dirty Chais might be another option.

I've never seen anyone on this thread check IDs at the door, and we've had other participants who were not quiiiite to to 60 yet. 😉 So: Welcome!
And welcome to you, too, @tammyroberts4070!
If you have questions, comments, just need to vent or want to chat, don't be shy about posting here. 😊

My friend and I have to check IDS as a necessary evils when we (volunteer) cashier museum events every six weeks or so. We sell both admission and alcohol tickets to redeem at the bar.
We laugh our butts off because everyone we choose to ID is late 20’s, but they look like babies to us!
At least people are flattered and not ugly!3 -
had a bad day yesterday but headed to the gym today to weight train and reset! Had a healthy breakfast, so I started my day right! Hope you all find joy today in whatever you do! 💪

Oh, what an indulgent weekend I had! My wife and I decided to eat big breakfasts and big dinners. Cocktails were also broached. Sat night was a little hard because it was one of those "long line seafood" experiences. By the time you've waited 45 minutes in line (drinking beer, listening to the fun guitar guy, watching the sunset, chatting with other people) you could eat a whole grouper (it was a seafood venue, after all). So, we chowed down with abandon!
I did some fun exercise, too. A vigorous stand-up paddle board, a 1.25mi ocean swim, and a 4 mile jog, all in perfect conditions. Really one of the most sublime weekends of the year. I'm having a hard time at work this morning!
So, let's see if I can get back to my pre-weekend weight by the end of week!

@springlering62 I've always told my husband that I gain weight by smelling the aroma in a bakery, I'm glad there's historical fact to go behind this theory!! 🤣
4 -
It was definitely true that waiting in line for 45 minutes "inhaling the odour of fried seafood" worked up a powerful hunger! 😋
Ah, so the entire problem is "odours." Stay away from those, and you're fine!
