i have never really liked soft drinks of any kind. i attribute that fortunate fact to my parents being older and spending their young adult years before soft drinks really be came a thing, so when i came along in their 40s they never really fed them to me much. it’s worth thinking about how habits like that are often burned in in childhood —that *may* help, anyway. (my own childhood burden is my father’s maxim “an open bottle is a dirty bottle.” i never really thought about it as i don’t really drink, but that’s certainly my attitude towards packaged baked goods of any kind. or store bought ice cream. sigh.)

I never though I'd hear Led Zepplin or KISS as "muzak" at the grocery store….

what’s weird is the young yoga instructors doing a reverse Muzak.

Several of mine have slooooow versions of Ring of Fire and I Want To Dance With Somebody, and some Fleetwood Mac song in their playlists.

Sorry, but a slowly dreamy and particularly whiny version of Whitney Houston makes me cringe.

If you don't already know about the album (OK it was a CD) from 25 years ago called "Prozak for Lovers," you should go seek it out.

Better than Muzak. Still; it was fun to find. I still have a copy somewhere. You can listen to the version of "Proud Mary" that someone posted on YouTube here:

Here is a spotify link for that… Listening now… can't decide if I like it or not. I think maybe not… but interesting. Admire persons who can "turn" a song from one genre into another.

yall, I am not renewing my subscription to MFP. until the kinks are worked out.

My daily diary is so beset with problems of every stripe, I can’t get a handle on it.

Last night it subtracted 6 or 7,000 steps, which affected my calorie account by 100 calories or so.

This morning my today’s step count went DOWN during breakfast in front of my eyes How can you lose steps?

The Negative Calorie adjustment has become unreliable- sometimes just a couple hundred, sometimes three times that. Before, it was fairly consistent and predictable. For those of us who burn a lot of calories, that’s another critical issue

I can’t easily retrieve many foods I’ve used on a daily or weekly basis. I went out of town for 6 days and had to rebuild much of my foods database. That’s annoying.

I can’t copy meals from other days because the days are so scrambled up, my diary doesn’t know what date to copy from because there’s multiple “today, yesterday and tomorrows”.

The 7-day calorie net and 7 day macro averages I rely on are utterly fouled up. It shows I have t eaten hardly anything on some days, and have eaten well over 3500 other days. I try to hit a certain net calorie average, but short of writing them down with a pencil and doing the math myself, the app’s net averages are off, potentially several hundred calories. I don’t have the time or patience for that for an app I pay for

My days are so scrambled up, I can’t pre-log days out, like I prefer to. Yesterday shows as “tomorrow” Saturday shows as “today” Sunday shows as yesterday.

I’m still logging, but it’s ugly and the platform is currently unusable.

And let’s be honest 15 months after the fact I’m still cheesed off that the Newsfeed is gone, yet MFP keeps (and appears to encourage) posts from users seeking friends or motivation buddies. We all know, the only thing they’ll get is some male photo, carefully chosen to appeal to their own profile pic age, of a scammer looking to make a buck off the lonely. That’s out of their hands, but new users racking up lots of friends ought to have some kind of red flag setting. Maybe a friend limit until X number of boards posts.

Speaking of which, these boards are dead. I’m either talking to myself, or to @annpt77, @nossmf, @cmriverside or a handful of other regulars. MFP doesn’t promote the boards.

God bless the folks on this board for hanging in and participating, btw

Inviting bounty hackers in to see where their weaknesses are caused a schlew of spammy posts which has, in turn, caused several-day-old posts to show up as brand new . While I appreciate them (apparently) monitoring the boards for these posts, I don’t want to reread the same first timer posts for days because they keep getting bumped up the feed. Some boards are so dead, the post recent posts is over a week old.

I think you’ll find few users who are as big an MFP cheerleader and fanatic as me It has changed my life But I am frustrated beyond belief right now.

If they can work out the kinks, no one will be happier than me.

I’m not just blowing smoke this time. I’ll be experimenting with some of the other calorie counting apps in the meantime, while crossing fingers MFP gets their *kitten* together.

I'd love to hear about some of the other options.

I am here mostly for calorie management. So far that seems to be working for me. If it starts to degrade, it won't be a useful tool for keeping me from gaining weight again. I don't want to just abandon all my data, but if I can't access it, that is a fool's errand.

I had tried a couple in the past but didn't stick with them because MFP works for me. If it stops working for me, I'll need a better option. I only started with MFP when the USDA stopped their "Super Tracker" site. It was very klunky, but it was publicly owned. I didn't want to use a commercial service. But I picked one and it worked. It still does. The social part can be nice, but I'm here for my belly.

I do NOT want to do the old fashioned look things up in a book or online with the USDA site. Too time consuming.

Interesting. I haven't had any issues with the logging recently. The new diary will probably be a disaster as usual but other than that the copying, finding foods and such still seems the same. Of course I have an iphone and mostly log food on my Mac computer.

I have a few community places which remain active and I frequent. Not here as much but I do browse. Oct will be my 8 yr maintenance anniversary altho I don't really think of it as having any sort of end date. Just keep plugging along.

    @ springlering62

They seem to have worked out nearly all those previous bugs for me, but I use the web version. I tried the app a few different times and it was so buggy I just couldn't.

Yeah, the forums are deader than oak leaves in November. I don't blame anyone for abandoning the site. It's only because I have decades of past data that I stay here and the food logging along with my Excel sheet work for me. Now when I have to get a new computer this month I'm probably going to have to toggle back and forth between two computers and that's gonna be annoying. I probably don't need all the data I've saved, I mean, the past month would be good enough I guess.

Have you sent them that post as a Support Ticket? May or may not help…::oldschoolflowerforyou::

Sorry, as much as I’ve cheerled for MFP, I feel like I’ve got the right to post some bitchin’.

I'd like to know what other loggers you find. I've only ever used this one, and not to the extent anyone else seems to use it - yet. I was starting to explore more.

I get annoyed with all the possible choices with different calories for things that "in theory" should be the same. Also with the serving sizes. Bouncing back and forth between "1 medium" or 2 oz or 28 grams… that sort of thing. It would be wonderful to have items with a consistent measuring unit. Perhaps it is there and I just have not found it.

Like the bar code scanner…. use that a lot. I've only found a couple things it did not recognize.

Anyways, there is my 2 cents worth….

I have to chip in to say that I have had none of the issues mentioned by @springlering62 .

I have been a lurker on this thread for some time (don't worry, I'm well over 60) and very rarely comment but I have to add my pennyworth. I use an android phone and use Chrome on an old laptop for the web version. I use the free version and have been been using it for over 7 years through a few changes.

I've even tried the new diary and frankly, don't see many problems with it. We all have to get used to new software from time to time, we will get used to the new format. My only gripe with the new diary is the date in the top right is in American format - very confusing for this Brit, especially when I was trying it out around the 9th of September - I thought the "yesterday" and "tomorrow" arrows weren't working. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (sigh!)

    @springlering62

Oh, don't get me wrong, I've had those issues in the past. . .it's just that it's working pretty well for me now other than the Ain't-Never-Fixin-THAT things like the database 10 million entries and no way to vet them - like @lesdarts180 said above. That should have been remedied years ago. It was possible to choose the USDA Admin-entered selections back in the day and it got messed up under Under Armor…still seems to me like an easy fix that they refuse to do for whatever unexplained reason.

I'm the first one to post threads in "Suggestions" and "Tech" and I send a lot of Support Requests. Eventually stuff (most stuff) gets fixed. Takes months sometimes. Since they're rolling out that new FOOD page it's bound to be messy.

Where are you looking that's better? I've snooped around the internet before and may again soon - is it chronometer?

a lot of people left here and went to Lose It because they had free barcode scanning, but more importantly, they still had a (sorta) Newsfeed.

The free scanning is now behind a paywall. I tried their feed but it was more like a Reddit type format of nested answers and responses. I find that very confusing, plus I liked my selected group of friends. On Lose It, it’s more like these boards. Anyone could see your posts. I couldn’t see the point.

I’ll try to get back in, but they may have done away with the trial, and I’m probably already past the free trial anyway.

Am intrigued by the reviews for Macrofactor. I may spring for a short term membership to check that out. Supposedly their app adapts to your metabolism. How?

There’s also several new AI Calorie Trackers that weren’t there last time I looked. Be interesting to see how that looks.

I am so unenamoured lately with MFP’s whacky, arbitrary and illogical “negative calorie adjustment”, I’m halfway tempted to go straight calorie counting and rely on Apple Watch for tracking calorie burns.

Or, I can hear my husband has just found The Munsters on the TV downstairs. I may just throw up my hands, grab a sack of sweets, and go join him. Like the good ole days.

Seriously , I guess this is my homework this weekend to see if there’s something better out there, or if I continue to limp along, making allowances for known glitches on MFP that don’t see to get fixed.

I am curious though, Those of you experiencing the yesterday, today and tomorrow glitches…..any chance any of you have had a time zone change lately. It did occur to me that my problem started around the time we had a three-zone change flying home from the west coast.

Here is just a super basic fix for things that go wrong for me - reboot. Turn off and turn back on whatever device it is you are using. It is so obvious that I forget to do it, sit there and curse my electronics for a while and then remember to power off, and restart.

Doesn't work for everything, but has sure solved some of my issues. It might work for the Time-Zone issues - don't know as I am stuck in the same one.

have deleted, rebooted and reinstalled. It errored out multiple times during the reinstall, presumably because of the lengthy user history.

New glitch, as of today, it’s refusing to add steps, even though I’ve tried syncing several times, and have closed out and restarted several times.

As a result of being so “inactive”, despite several workouts today, my negative calorie adjustment is already approaching -300.

I have found, for many months now, that mfp, when on my iPhone, doesn’t let me see/access ‘my foods’, but my Mac will. How does my computer know and my synched iPhone doesn’t, lol? I pretty much only use my iPhone with mfp. I haven’t bothered to try to see if mfp could figure it out. I don’t have to headspace for that (read: tolerance).

I haven't seen most of the problems others reported with logging, but I admit I've been mostly taking a logging holiday lately to see how that goes.

About the bug bounty thing: The people pursuing it in the Community are full bore dopes. The public bounty offer very clearly says the Community is NOT included in the bounty program. It's limited to the regular MFP software, not the Vanilla Forums software that constitutes the Community.

    "public bounty?" offer?

  • AnnPT77
    AnnPT77 Posts: 38,137 Community Helper

It's a thing where companies offer payment to (theoretically) good-guy techie people - some would say "hackers", specifically "white-hat hackers" - who find bugs, primarily security exposures in the software, and report them to the company so they can be fixed. It's a fairly common thing with large-scale public-facing software applications.

There are various ways of offering or managing the offer. When it's a public offer, it brings out not only quite clever techies who might be involved in private bounty offerings, but also large numbers of beginners or outright dummies (sometimes a.k.a. "script kiddies") who try lots of stupid, ineffectual things. In this case, there are strong hints that the dummies might have reading comprehension issues - didn't read the offer, or didn't understand what they read. 🙄

Companies offer techies bounties (payments) for finding bugs - usually security risk type bugs - in their software. It's fairly common with large scale consumer-facing software. Sometimes the offers are published on sites designed for that purpose. Public offers tend to bring out the unskilled. Apparently some of them have reading comprehension problems.

sorry, didn’t mean to turn this into the bellyache thread, but it’s like the iOS app is crumbling. Had another major issue crop up yesterday, but there’s so many I can’t even remember what it is now.

Only half my steps are syncing, which is making me seem less active, which is throwing off the negative calorie adjustment which throws off net leftover calories. My right brain knows i have about 100 more left than whats showing but my left brain is like “nope, there’s a number there and you’ve always followed the number”.

It’s like having the rug pulled out from under me.

    Numerical dysmorphia.

Spent a couple hours reading reviews of other tracking apps to get a handle on their issues. Lots of complaints about lag, small or inaccurate database (I’m assuming crowd sources, too, so that I know how to deal with it ), frequent logouts (oh! That was my problem yesterday! Couldn’t stay logged in and had to verify I was human repeatedly!), a lot of complaints I’d simply put down to inexperience.

Amazingly, one I looked at only records via photos (no manual logging) , and has terrible reviews because you can’t edit quantities. People are reporting the first photo (in this review it was a fried chicken thigh) was logged at 46 calories, the second photo, same thigh, was 600+.

I’m wondering if some of these bounty hackers got in to MFP and did some mischief?

  • springlering62
    springlering62 Posts: 10,308 Member

….ironically several other apps had complaints that their social and friends aspect wasn’t as good as MFP.

    😮

And the two apps that most my angry MFP friends switched to when Newsfeed got killed off have a litany of bad reviews for……wait for it……putting bar code scan behind a paywall. 😂

All apps I looked at had tons of complaints about aggressive ads, including one that made you watch an ad each time you logged a food. (At least, that’s how multiple reviews were worded.) Several reviewers on two of the biggest apps were particularly outraged because they were getting screen-filling pop ups that they were infected or were out of memory, and when they touched the X it took them to the ad anyway.

I’m getting that on various websites lately, though, including some articles I get on Apple News. I guess that particular kind of aggressive ad is making a comeback. 👎🏻

It is sounding to me like the app has not kept up with technology updates - which is a difficult task given the large amount of devices and persons. Not making excuses for them, just saying. One change can affect a gazillion other things - and might not be found for a while.

I never used the app. I stick to web version, never had a problem. I don't stress about not being able to scan stuff. If I eat out, I will search online to see if the calorie count is listed on the online menus, otherwise I don't stress that meal. I just stick to healthy choices and don't worry about it. Life is too short to be frustrated with an app!

I am now noticing that there "yesterday" is labeled "tomorrow" on the iOS app. Tomorrow is labeled "today." The day after tomorrow might be correct. The day before yesterday seems correct. It's very weird.

I will go send a support ticket; maybe they'll fix it.

    Hello -

I have been using MyFitnessPal on and off for several years, it was encouraged and premium paid for by our company. I am 67 (until next month) and recently retired in April 2024. My weight gradually ballooned to 202.4lbs - mostly related to the stress of having three grandkids (and their dad) move in, dealing with breast cancer and getting out of a stressful marriage. In addition, my diet changed significantly when I started shopping and cooking for the kids. I was able to lose 60lbs before I was diagnosed with cancer and retired (I thought the cancer would help me keep weight down, but nope).

Cancer free, divorce almost final and my eldest granddaughter has moved on and started her own family. Plus, the younger kids' dad has found a place to rent nearby and has finally moved out.

I can finally feel like I can focus more on myself and my health. I started back on a healthy diet recently and finally starting to lose weight again. I also started to do things just for me, like traveling and weekends with friends.

It would be nice to find others in my area and in my age group who are focusing on their health that are interested in a morning or evening walk. I find it boring all my myself.

Any folks from Manteca, CA out there?

My “real life” experience has been that friends, neighbors, even others in the gym don’t care about your experience, your weight loss wins, loses.

I’ve actually found a much better group of folks here online.
