What Mini Goal is motivating you right now!

@anxietyfairy YES! this was my elusive goal for several months! But like you...I believe in results, time and patience. Once I had become accustomed to a regular yoga practice....I did the Beginners Walking Workout. This year I felt ready to tackle the seemingly impossible 10,000 steps goal and I am thrilled to report I am happy with my progress π. I am currently following the Spark People Intermediate Walking Workout.....I am on Week 6 of 12 and currently just over 5000 steps 4 to 5 times a week. I remember when my steps were 1500. I am a strong believer in following a program that leads to a goal you can align with. Then by simply following it...you eventually reach your goal. Rather than just thinking about it. With Walking especially...it's just putting one foot in front of the other and it's amazing how the inches melt off.
Google Spark People Intermediate Walking Workout, you'll find it in Images. It's 12 weeks long and quite a bit more intense than the Beginners Walking Workout. If you are really new to Walking or concerned about the time commitment...go for the Beginners. Its 3x per week.β¦plus I suggest a 5 minute walk the other 4 days to stay consistent. It is also 12 weeks.
The Intermediate is 4 to 5X per week with an average time of 30 minutes the first 6 weeks and 45 minutes the second 6 weeks. They both increase slowly, are 12 weeks long....the Intermediate takes you to about 10,000 steps after 12 weeks. 5x a week
I still exercise daily but I do yoga the other 2 days to stay flexible....I follow Yoga With Adriene on You Tube.
If you REALLY want to commit to an exercise program that's really effective and non threatening....it would take you 6 - 8 months .....I start a week over again if I can't finish it completely the first time.....then do BOTH! 12 WEEKS BEGINNER WALKING WORKOUT followed by 12 WEEKS INTERMEDIATE WALKING WORKOUT.
Youll have fun, there's no stress on your joints, if you can't finish the week restart it the following week NO GUILT....and literally one step at a time, you'll be a completely different person in 6 months.
In 2 weeks you feel it...in 4 weeks you see it....in 8 weeks your friends and family will see it....in 12 to 16 weeks everyone will notice...in SIX MONTHS they'll ask HOW?π³

thank you for your thoughtful response. I already average 3,000 to 15,000 steps per day, I would just like to be more consistent or predictable. I did 30,000 steps yesterday π. Would love to get to 35 but I might wait till Iβve lost another 5kg so my feet donβt fall off.

It's October 8, 2025, the eve of one month until I turn 63. My mini goal is to lose 4.5 pounds by then and be at 145. I'm right on target with tracking, adjusting, planning, and implementing my food program and I'm working out 5X a weekβ2 rest days recommended by my dietitian. Overexercising raises cortisol (stress hormone) and can INCREASE weight! That actually happnened to me! 45 at 63.

@NinaMJewell I love this! Positive thoughts for a happy healthy pregnancy βΊοΈ

Breaking 200 which I almost did for my daughter's wedding in Febr. 2023. Then hitting 175 which would put me in a healthy range. I also have a wedding to attend in one year, and would like to still be at 175. At the moment I am using keto and the weight seems to be falling off. I'm skeptical that it is real and that it can continue. I'm in my mid 60's and July 2024 to March 2025 had both hips and my left knee replaced. It went perfectly and I have great "wheels" now and can go to the gym and walk steep terrains. Feeling very blessed and very determined.

@oreillywa I lost 70 lbs in about 6 months in 2023 with keto, and have kept them off.
I did "clean keto," making all my food from scratch from whole ingredients. No pre-packaged snack foods, shakes, replacement flours, artificial sweeteners, etc.
I ate lots of low-glycemic-index veggies (mostly greens and green veggies); fish, meat, and eggs; limited dairy and dried beans, and limited fruit (mostly berries and melon). For a treat I'd have a bit of popcorn, 100% dark chocolate, or a small piece of a higher-GI fruit every now and then (a couple grapes, a quarter of an apple, a piece of banana).
I also made sure to eat mostly HEALTHY fats (olive/avocado/linseed oils, avocados, fatty fish, nuts & seeds), and drank only water and herbal teas. No alcohol, caffeine, or diet sodas.
In other words, I stayed away from all the bacon & eggs + keto bread + protein bars + coffee/diet soda that a lot of ketoers seem to be into. Keto works, but it's not a magical "eat anything you want by using manufactured ingredients" diet.
Like all good "diets," keto works because it's actually quite a healthy way of life when done right, and in a way that is sustainable for the long term. The focus should be on getting the nutrients we need in order to be healthy, rather than on "how to keep carbs & calories low while still eating muffins and cereal."
I still eat clean, but more of a Mediterranean diet now, with more carbs (higher-GI veggies, more fruit and beans) than I did at the time. I still don't eat much grains, sugar, etc.
All this to say that yes, it is real and it can continue. But we do still need to eat your veggies, haha. And once the weight is off, we don't go back to what we were eating before, because that's how we get back to the weight we were before π¬
Here are some pictures of my keto meals, if anyone is interested π Best wishes to you @oreillywa

On July 13th my mini goal was to drop my cholesterol level from 279 to under 250 by October 9th. Today I got back my test results and my cholesterol is now 227.

I want to get 35,000 steps in a day, hopefully by Christmas, and eventually 40,000 then 45,000! I don't know if it's possible without injuring myself. If it is too difficult, I might try decreasing how long it takes me, or ruck (carry weight whilst walking, I have a weighted vest that is about 15kg).

Get through this cold without gaining any weight.

I have been on my journey since late November 2022. Or rather....my most successful one. I began in the very high 180s....about 188....and thru slowly changing habits, went from Obese to Normal in that time.
I weighed myself today and despite my regular exercise, I notice I have slowly been gaining weight....eating a bit more as the weather gets cooler. Today's weigh in was the first in 6 weeks....I have gained 6 pounds. At first I was upset....but I have had an opportunity to reassess..hopefully this will help one other person.
a)I gained one pound a week....the same time frame it is recommended to lose...one pound per week. I have always said it takes JUST AS LONG to gain as it does to properly lose. Don't go for the quick weight loss....one pound a week is EXCELLENT.
b) Make exercise a regular part of your day. Even if you go thru seasons in your life when you find yourself eating more, those daily walks etc, will help to stabilize your weight so you don't veer completely off the rails. If you can keep your weight gain to one pound a week, it's much easier to wander back on to the right path again.
c)I know it will take me 6 weeks to lose these 6 pounds. However, the good news is I am only Marginally Overweight and my BMI is only 25.6 By focusing on lowering my BMI to 24.9, I am not overwhelmed and will be back to Normal in no time. It is SUCH a great feeling to feel like I caught this in time. π₯Ή
Finally, I know EXACTLY what went wrong. In addition to my extra calories, I have gone as far as I can with Yoga and Walking. I'm grateful for these exercise options....they worked to help me lose my first 40 pounds without stress on my joints while being effective. Now I walk up to 5km without considering it exercise....it's time to challenge my body once again. Next week and thru the fall and winter, my NEW GOAL is a 12 Week exercise program focused on my trusty Eleptical machine and a light weights/high reps exercise program. I'm not working with a trainer, I have done this years ago and had great results!
Stay consistent, focus on one pound at a time, don't be afraid to step on the scale because it's important to stop weight gain while it's still manageable. Reassess and keep going. π

I am currently maintaining between 127 lbs. and 133 lbs. That's not my intentions. I want to get down to 120 lbs. I'm only 5ft. Under 125 lbs, would give me a normal BMI of 24.9. I am currently considered overweight again. Ugh! As of today, I have 7.2 lbs to loose. My mini goal is to drink more water, so I don't continue to eat back the calories I burn, during my regular workout.
@spirittrail - It's been inspiring to read your posts. (Here and in NSV page) You give some really good advice too. I feel, we've been on similar journeys. I also started my weight loss at 180 lbs. I've lost 60 lbs. over a 9 month period. Then, over the past year, some of my old habits came sneaking back into my life and I put back on 13 lbs. I caught it in time, that it shouldn't be to difficult to lose. I love "30 Day Challenges", they keep me motivated. I notice we eat similar foods too. I believe most my success is from being mindful of what I eat.
@anxietyfairy - You've been inspiring. I've been reading your posts.(Here and in NSV page) You will definitely reach your goals. My goal is to get 35,000 steps in a day, too. I received the Trail Shoe Badge(30,000 steps) with my Fitbit. I'm currently working on my Hiking Boots Badge(35,000 steps). I currently average 10,000 steps in a day. π₯ Here's to us and our success!
@takinitalloff - Hello my Lady! You're still my biggest inspiration. I've been following you since the beginning of my journey. I always enjoy reading your posts. You always have good advice. You also remind me, where I've been, where I am now, and how I got here. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

@Veta2018 Thank you! Weight loss journeys can feel so isolating, it's easy to feel we are the only ones traveling a specific path. I'm thrilled to meet someone who has also set off from the 180s starting line...lost approximately the same amount of weight...gained back "a pesky few"...and loves 30 Day workout challenges. π₯Ή
After my post from last week, I have an exciting update and am my own inspiration. π€© After each trip to the Community Centre, I record my weight in MFP. It occured to me to check my weight loss chart (MFP keeps track for one straight year). I'm thrilled with my progress! Thru slow and steady habit change, my weight since October 22, 2024 has ranged from 134 to 144. So I did actually lose 54 pounds in 16 months...that was in February of 2025 I reached my low of 134. Mostly I stayed in the mid 130s and low 140s this year. 137-143. In August I was at 144. My weight started to slowly creep up in early September to 146....and last week my weight was 150.0 right on the nose! I'm happy because this means I will NEVER AGAIN be in the 150s, 160s, 170s or 180s. Those days are behind me forever.
I am just 5 pounds away from getting back to a normal BMI of 24.9 I'm going to keep doing what works for me. Being mindful of what I eat (my taste buds have changed drastically and I can occasionally indulge in something but I can't eat like I once did.) I am addicted to daily movement like walking or yoga and no longer consider it "exercise". I look forward to working on muscle development thru weights and challenges πͺ π .
Congratulations on your amazing success π. Never be afraid to go at your own pace...it really is a marathon π. Your body and brain will have an easier time of adjusting when you take your time and soon you'll also reach the point where the thought of gaining back 20, 30 or 40 pounds is completely foreign. Isn't that the end goal? To have to do this just once, then enjoy a healthy balanced lifestyle that includes nutrition, daily movement and living your life without panicking every time there's a special occasion? π€ͺ

Thanks @takinitalloff for your great post on keto and the photos. I am also thinking going to the Mediterranean diet once I leave keto. I am not being as "clean" as you although I am starting to lower my saturated fat to more favorable fat like olive oil. More chicken/fish, less beef. But moderation in general. I can't make it so pure that it becomes a burden. I don't buy bread called keto, but I have made keto bread from scratch. I work and currently help my wife care for our ill, but still contributing, Irish Wolfhound.
That transition away from Keto is a long ways off but when I do, I intend to move very gradually on carbs. I understand most people gain weight when they move away from Keto and I hope to make that smooth.
Take care.

@Veta2018 Thank you so much for your message β€οΈ I've been struggling a lot lately, and your words mean a lot to me π€ I always love to hear from you, and I know we can do this!
Congrats on your Trail Shoe Badge π€© Sounds like you'll be getting your Hiking Boots Badge this weekend or so? I don't have a Fitbit, would love to see your badges if you'd like to share a picture. (No worries if not.)

@oreillywa Glad you liked my keto comment & pictures.
I had to go 100% with keto from the start because that was the only thing I could manage at the time. Leaving any room for choices and "interpretation of the rules" would have doomed me back then, because I was excellent at finding loopholes β and then widening them into loopchasms π€£
But my switch toward the Mediterranean(ish) way of eating was gradual. I started by improving my ratio of unsaturated to saturated fats, like what you are doing currently. I was super careful when I started re-introducing carbs, for example I would add a small amount of beans to my veggie soups, or have a couple slices of banana as a treat, or a tablespoon of rice with my curry. I'm now teaching myself to loosen the rules a little bit more, without going completely off the rails (going out to eat once in a while, for example). But it's still a work in progress, for sure.
All this to say that you are correct: you do NOT have to gain weight when you start adding carbs back in (I did not). So go at your own pace, be aware of what you're doing, and stay away from anything that triggers cravings etc. β but don't let those (healthy) carbs scare you. Best wishes!

@takinitalloff - I bought my Fitbit in February. It was reasonably priced. I hear that the Garmin has a lot of badges and challenges, but it's also a lot more pricey. I only just started trying to obtain badges. Most of these I just earn accidentally, during my weight loss journey.

@takinitalloff Funny story for you. We went to a church event - a new thing our parish decided to try - a talent show! My wife and I had to leave real quickly because the talent was mostly bad and we didn't want to speak negatively in front of others! The event provided free dinner - pizza and salad. How was I going to endure this temptation? I got two skinny slices of pizza and scraped off the top - cheese and pepperoni - and the salad was fine. Dressing on the side and I used as tiny an amount as I could. Worked fine and I was very proud that I overcame the temptation to dive into that pizza! This weekend - Halloween - candy and then celebrating our daughter's birthday with my wife and son-in-law. Challenges abound. Already thinking ahead to Thanksgiving. Going to make my favorite veggies combo - olive oil sauteed mushroom and instapot cooked broccoli - and then dark meat from the turkey which is my favorite. I won't be too hard on myself if I have two much of either. I'll have one tiny spoonful each of mashed potato and dressing, to be able to say I had some. My family is supportive, so it will work.
My wife's family, led by my wonderful father-in-law who I miss dearly, were really big into celebrating every holiday, birthday, football game with huge quantities of decadent food and alcohol. Food is the centerpeice. When we have a party which we do fairly often, always very high carbs and we put out way too much food. It would be a sin to not have way more than is needed, it seems. We've gotten better at giving it away afterwards and throwing it away when it's the last option.

Oh wow! I've set a NEW RECORD for exercise this month! 15 hours and 15 minutes!! π 915 minutes for October. The majority of this was spent walking on average 5x per week. My speed has surpassed the max posted for "very brisk walk" on MFP'S exercise log .....I walk 5.0 mph. I've lost 2 of my gained pounds....down to 148 lbs...and I never feel any pain or feel tired. Just energized afterwards. My balance and posture has REALLY improved and I actually feel like a true yogi! Slim and straight. π My mini goal is to continue adding up my daily exercise minutes...improving monthly. With the weather getting cooler I found an exciting new Eleptical machine program to follow in place of walking which will burn more fat and I am FINALLY (re)starting my lightweight cardio program for the next 12 weeks....plus yoga, I will always do some yoga. π₯°
