@chris_in_cal you went for for a run the same night after daytime drinking? Woah

Happy Monday! The artic chill made it to my part of the country today. Saturday when I ran it was 50f and this morning it was 29F with 9 mph winds making it feel like 21F. It really wasn't bad though. I ended up removing my gloves on the last mile (ran 5 miles).
I agree with @tarun_yadavA - kudos to you @chris_in_cal for getting out after a day of indulgence!

Monthly goal: 50 miRegarding hills while running, my old high school cross country coach really emphasized hill training as part of our program, even going so far as driving us to the nearby ski slopes (no snow on the ground during the fall) so we could dedicate a workout per week to just hills. But the key point for him was the psychology of hills, how so many runners psych themselves out even before the hill starts about "I can't keep my pace uphill" and "this is going to exhaust me". Our team members were told specifically to SPRINT up any hill, then drop back to just-below-normal pace after reaching the top until we felt recovered enough to resume normal pace. Not only did this take a few moments off our course time, as well as counter our own mental doubts, but the magic was placing an additional doubt into our opponents' minds.
Think of this: you're already struggling on a hill, when somebody blazes past you. Your brain will set in your unconscious the thought "wow, that guy/gal is FAST uphill, there's no WAY I can keep up with them!" Even after the hill is over, you see the back of that person, and your brain still thinks, "can't keep up", so often the runner never even tries, even automatically slowing their own pace to match yours during your mini-recovery, and then watching in dismay when you pick the pace back up again a few moments later.
I can attest how accurate this is, based on the fact that during my races I would pass dozens of people on hills, and they would pass me back again on the straightaway maybe 10% of the time, leaving the other 90% still behind me. And I wasn't the fastest guy on the team! (I was actually the slowest on the team, which always overshadowed in my mind the fact I would finish races in the top third of all racers most of the time. Back then I thought I was hopelessly slow; now I realize my team was just amazingly fast, one of the reasons we had multiple state championships.)

Yup, I had a backyard garden party to celebrate a shady deck I built on the back of my house. It was 25° C (77° F).
Ending at 3:00 p.m., then an hour nap, then looking at all the dishes and mess for thirty minutes, I realized it was my usual run time….so I did.
Re: Hills
That's a good story @nossmf
I ran one season of cross-country and "hills" play a role in my one season. I was over confident I would do well on the team, and the story I told myself was I was "good" running hills. The team's first full workout was a full Hills interval workout … I was destroyed and I completed disabused myself of the notion I was 'good' on hills.
The last race of the season I walked the course ahead of time and saw it basically was flat except for one big hill in the middle. I went out fast, hitting that hill I intentionally slowed to a crawl, and was passed by a bunch, and at the top picked it back up and finished the last of it going fast. Thinking and preparing for that hill as something to be respected totally calmed me and changed my mindset, and the last race was my best race of the season….good memories.
What I thought of hill running and then what I actually learned about hill running was the theme of the season for me.

@chris_in_cal I have a really hard time exercising after eating, and drinking. You did great. Congrats on the shady deck. I bet you'll get a lot of use out of that.
@tarun_yadavA I hope you cut your run short today because of work and not an injury…or maybe the weather.
You're a much stronger woman than I am @Teresa502 . That's just way too cold for me and I KNOW my gloves would not have come off. 🤣
@nossmf You are correct about the hills, if I could just convince myself of that in a race. I love hill repeat workouts, but mostly because after I sprint up the hill, I can walk to recover. LOL It does make you feel strong though.

I didn't think I was going to get to run today. I had planned to work at daycare from 7:30 - 4:30, come home to take care of Tippy, do a quick mile walk, and then meet the tennis women for dinner at 6:00. But, is was so cold (wind chill in the teens) and had been snowing on and off all day with possible black ice, I decided to opt out of dinner. So, when I got home, I went down for my planned Fast Finish Run on the treadmill.
Plan called for 5 min in Zone 1, 20 min in Zone 2, and 5 min in Zone 3. I ran these at 4.5, 4.8, and 5.0 mph (walking when necessary to keep my HR in the zone). I actually ran a little over 6 min at 5.0 with no walk and my HR never got above Zone 3.
Avg pace for the run was 13:12 min/mile. Avg HR was 134 with a max of 159 bpm. I was pleased with it, even if it was a bit slow.

It was cold this morning. Garmin said the temperature was 32°F, but the weather app on my phone said 28°F. Either way, that is too cold for me. I considered going to the Wellness Center at the hospital and using the treadmill, but I didn't really want to run on a treadmill. So I got dressed and headed out. It was colder than I like, and I am still a bit sore from Saturday's race so it was a tough run. But I managed to get 5 slow miles in. It isn't supposed to be quite as cold tomorrow, but I think there will be more wind.

Rolled out of bed, glass of water and a half hearted stretch before an easy run on feel rather than HR.
The running numbers seem to be going up quite nicely this month, this is effectively the last week I have of a normal workload. Starting Monday work is going to be incredibly busy until Christmas week & thats before any Christmas socialising etc.
Hoping to just stay consistent for the next five weeks.
6/17 runs 40km/110km

Dilemma Question: go out for my 3 mile walk now at 8AM with feels like temp of 21F or wait until 3:30PM when feels like temp is 39F?
edited: decided I’m going this afternoon6 -
Great running @tarun_yadavA, @kgirlhart and @username301 .
Too late now, but I vote for this afternoon @daria0919 .

I decided for this afternoon as well @quilteryoyo 🙃! Just too darn cold for walking. Might have been a different decision had it been a fast run, but those days are over.

Smart! I hope you can warm things up just a smidge before Saturday morning please! 😁

You will have to let us know how you get on with the nose strip @John772016
I was with John on the LSD psychedelic @WarmJellyfish . I have heard about this runners high, I'll try anything once, twice if I like it. Probably should add 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' to my run playlist.
My daughter flew back for an early 30th birthday celebration this weekend. Just about kept on plan with some juggling of run days and early starts.
Fantastic result @kgirlhart , I will be bragging about knowing an HM winner.
Hace a great week everyone 😀

Doing great @nossmf .
Sounds like you did great with the juggling act @TheMrWobbly . Happy Birthday to your daughter!

Nice walks & runs @chris_in_cal, @tarun_yadavA, @Teresa502 (I'd be looking for another pair of gloves to put on!), @nossmf, @quilteryoyo, @kgirlhart, @username301, @daria0919 (too late for me to respond but I will go for a walk in almost anything if the weather isn't supposed to improve),
Used to love hills & the challenge until I screwed up my ankle during the Covid shutdown. Bum ankle for weeks, can't go anywhere. My normal hills became an issue. I normally conquer them by the end of summer. Didn't this year.
Happy 30th to your daughter @TheMrWobbly!
Posting 2 days.

The snow flurries continued off/on yesterday until this morning. Apparently my neighbourhood only got about 7-8cm (~3 inches) so only a few hundred car accidents😮.
Last 2 day's runs on the treadmill, I was running along with a trainer apparently around @chris_in_cal's neck of the woods - San Diego.
Yesterday was running through Balboa Park (Past a bunch of museums, through the Cactus Garden & Rose Garden & way too many high incline trails😂) & today running in La Jolla (along the top of the cliffs while watching the paddleboarders & pelicans).5 -

Happy Veteran's Day @quilteryoyo and @SummerSkier ! And any other Veterans I may be missing.
Today's run was much better than yesterday's. It was 46°F, which is pretty chilly for me, but not unbearable. I am still a little sore, but not as bad as yesterday. I ran 6 miles. They were pretty slow, but I still got it done.

Great walking @daria0919 . I hope the weather is great for you and @Teresa502 on Saturday!
Sounds like great treadmill runs @John772016 . If I ever have to get a new treadmill (hopefully wont have to for a while yet) I need to get one with all of the nice training runs like that. I have an IFit, but never got the subscription. I may look into it, but it's probably so old that the software isn't supported anymore - think I got it in like 2008.
Thanks @kgirlhart . Your recovery is going great. @CMorning99 is also a veteran. I second the sentiment to all those who served in the military. Thank you for your service.

Mom and I both had dentist appointments this morning. Afterwards, we met some friends at Applebee's for lunch (free for me for Veterans day). I also went by Texas Roadhouse and got a coupon for a free meal that can be used until the end of May. They also gave the veterans that stopped by a cupcake. I ate it and it was really, really good. AND, I went by Dunkin Donuts for a free donut, which I gave to mom. LOL
After I got home, I did a cross training workout - 2 miles uphill on the treadmill. I worked my way up in incline to 3.0% at 4.0 mph. I could have probably increased the incline, but didn't want to do too much too soon and hurt myself.
Tonight, I played indoor doubles tennis. Round robin again. My teams won two and lost one. I think it was 6-0, 4-6, and 7-6. It was fun.

@John772016 I'm thinking about doing a Turkey Trot there (Thursday November 27) IRL.
Come on down we can run it together.

Thank you for the veteren's day wishes. FOr some reason this year "thank you for your service" just seems not quite the right thing I want to say. I dunno why.
41 miles to date out of 100 goal this month with some very unmotivated feelings yesterday and it was chilly but I sliced out a 5K.
5 -
Good morning! I got in 5 miles this morning. It was a little warmer than Monday at 34F.
How about "I appreciate your service" @SummerSkier , @quilteryoyo and @CMorning99 ? Thank you! Glad you were able to enjoy some pampering from local businesses @quilteryoyo !
3 -
I am telling myself to run today. If I don't get myself out the door now when it's just above freezing, I am not going to want to go for run when it's below freezing.
5 -
Mon and Tue were recovery days. Yesterday was particularly stiff. Can't bounce up and go like I used to.
@quilteryoyo @SummerSkier belated happy veteran's day wishes, from another one.
5 -
Good morning!
@quilteryoyo Happy Veterans day to you as well, thanks for remembering!
So I went MIA for nearly a month LOL It all started with an update either with MFP or my work computer where I couldn't pass the "are you human" test. It has happened before and it usually resolves…so I am back!
I have halfway fallen off the bandwagon. Between not logging in and catching a obnoxious cold in Oct, to visiting family, our anniversary weekend, the shutdown.. meh. It has been a doozy.
The good news is that my TrainWell app has kept me on track for strength training, so I am on track for that. In fun news one day I was feeling feisty and decided to see if I could even run 1 mile. Turned out I could…at a 12:30 pace, lots of pep talks, step counting…just to the next tree promises…and burning ankles and calves. I have done it a few times but fell off the "run" wagon the last few weeks with work being a complete PITA and with the time change…I have just done my strength and crawled home to couch rot.
I have been thinking a lot on how to better structure my day. I am a morning person…I feel my best at 7am…I have to be at work at 6am…so wondering what I want to prioritze to capitialize on my energy.
Best get to it! 3rd rain storm this fall/winter in central cali…so very odd.

Intervals this morning.
500m@5.56m/km & 500m@8m/km x5.
I cracked at the end of the 4th faster interval. Unfortunately, whenever, I dont meet a goal, I have no ability at all to have a of bit extra rest then finish 'on plan'. I just get grouchy.
The 4th interval was 400m@5.56m/km & 5th was only 200m@5.56m
In all 2.1km@5.56m/km & 2.9km@8m/km. Will revisit this in a fortnight.
7/17 runs 45km/110km

12 Nov … 0.3 mi (work) // 1.8 mi (jog)Cumulative totals: 5.3 mi (walk) // 19.9 mi (jog)
Cumulative total: 25.2 mi
Monthly goal: 50 miAnother veteran here, as is my brother, brother-in-law, father, both grandfathers, two uncles, son and daughter, father-in-law, mother-in-law, great aunt, and on and on. It's actually easier in my family to identify who is NOT a veteran. But between long work day plus even longer commute on either side, I didn't get to partake in a single veteran's day discount/freebie being offered by the community. Phooey.

@SummerSkier The unmotivated runs are the hardest. You did great.
Thanks @Teresa502 . Nice run.
I hope you got out for a run @angf0679 .
@WarmJellyfish Didn't know you were a veteran. Thanks for your service.
Welcome back @CMorning99 . Sounds like a tough Oct. Glad you are back at it and congrats on making the mile! Awesome sauce.
Still a great ru @username301 .
Nice running @nossmf . Thanks for your family's service. Sorry you aren't able to get any of the freebies.
