Tips that have worked for me
- Put your current numbers into MFP
Select sedentary as your activity level
Choose how much you'd like to lose (i.e. 1 lb/week)
MFP will give you the number of calories to eat
Eat those calories
... and weigh (with food scale) and log every bite.- Stick to it for 5 weeks, then reassess how things are going. :)
A few extra things have helped me along the way:
Exploring my grocery stores and markets to find delicious, filling low calorie foods. It's amazing what's out there!
Of course, I do much of this online because I order most of our groceries online and have them delivered. But that gives me the time to check the nutrition lists etc. I tend to get much of our fruit in person from a fruit & veg market near where I work.Exercising as much as possible. Exercise gives me extra calories to work with so that I can have things like pizza now and then. But to keep my sanity and not wear myself out, my exercise quantity varies as does what I do for exercise.
I do a mixture of cycling, walking, climbing flights and flights of stairs, running, rowing, swimming and weight lifting.Eating how I want to eat. This is where everyone is different ... some people prefer to employ fasting, others like high protein diets, some like vegetarian diets, some like to eat 2 or 3 meals a day, others like to graze. Go with what works for you.
Personally, if I had to define what I do, my diet is probably most similar to a Mediterranean diet with a vegetarian lean. I do an informal intermittent fasting (I don't eat breakfast and haven't since my late teens) and I'm a bit of a grazer during the time period when I do eat.
I also have to adjust what I do depending on my cycling events ... they're tricky because I need the fuel without going overboard.10 Things to Stop Doing If You Want to Exercise

Thank you! Yes, 24.5 lbs. 😁
I think I've mentioned this before … 😊
I think of weight in terms of 2-litre bottles of pop (soft drink). That gives me an idea of how much extra weight I've got and how much weight I'm losing.
Back in January, I calculated that I could definitely stand to lose at least 16 kg (35 lbs). 16 kg = 8 of those 2-litre bottles of pop.
If we were to place 4 of those 2-litre bottles of pop into one shopping bag and 4 in another and then pick them up ... they'd be fairly heavy. If we were to go for a long walk carrying them, or try to jog carrying them, or if we were to put them in a backpack and go for a bicycle ride ... they'd soon start to feel really, really heavy.
Now I've taken 5.5 of those 2-litre bottles of pop and "placed them back on the shelf". My "shopping bags" are lighter! I can walk further and faster! I jog and feel OK. I cycle up hills and they're not quite so hard as they once were … and my speed has increased by 2 km/h!!
Every 2-litre bottle of pop I "put back on the shelf" should make the activity I do a little bit easier.
And the more active I am now, the easier it should be for me to be active as I get older. I want to be one of those 80 year olds who is still out cycling … like my father!

Morning, the only good thing I can say about the parathyroidectomy is that I sleep better and wake earlier and dont take many naps anymore.im down to 124.4 want to lose to 120.and then figure out how to maintain. I Feel better at this weight for sure.but I used to cook everyday for Tom,also baked treats..now I dont feel like cooking at all,it's to much of a chore ,they say once you have open heart surgeries that you change ..well between that and the kidney transplant and the parathyroidectomy in 5 yrs time I would say so
Hope everyone is enjoying there day so far..I know the West Coasters are still snoozing

Beautiful. and its SOOOO nice to have blooms in November.

😀 I eat almost the same thing every day at the same times. It solves the decision making process and makes shopping and cooking easier. I cook a few things in big batches and freeze them in single serving portions. I seek every opportunity to be active and rarely sit for more than 30 minutes at a time.
😀 Right now my freezer has single serving portions of chicken soup, chicken with peanut sauce, chicken breast, chicken sausage, and turkey burgers along with many bags of frozen veggies and two loaves of Dave's Killer Bread with seeds. My snacks are pecans, prunes, and cherry tomatoes. I get vegan snack and meal replacement bars made by Gomacro.
😀 My fridge has cheddar cheese, cream cheese, green olives and whatever is thawing for lunch and dinner. I have a chocolate Isagenix shake for breakfast.
😀 I walk every morning after breakfast and again later in the day with a friend and the dogs—minimum 10,000 steps. I ride my exercise bike for at least an hour every day.
😀 Today I will take my Sunday and Thursday walking friend to the hospital for a medical procedure. I'll take Annie with me. I'll get my friend checked in, then come home and wait for the phone call from the hospital to tell me I can pick her up. It's about a 30 minute drive to the hospital from her house. I told her that the whole day is hers so however the schedule works out, I'll be there for her.

I am glad that the surgery to remove your parathyroids are showing its positive effects!💖👍🏼 I think the goal now is to adapt to all these changes your body has gone thru. Its nothing short of a transformation.😁🙃. But I bet its so nice not to carry around all those liters of soda like Machka mentioned! I am getting there! We are all just fed up Pepsi Cola centers saying this soda business is poppycock!😂😂 Big hugs at 6:25 am!

Allie - So pleased the last surgery is finally helping you sleep. If we can sleep, we can heal, and you have a lot that needs healing, dear heart.
Sherry - I think the "flowers in November" post was for me, and yes, yes it is amazing. I live at the foothills of the Ozarks, so my weather is a cross between the mountain weather and the Arkansas River Valley's temperatures. Love it here.
Finally peeled Egg off my keyboard so I could type - I may not need to see the keys, as I'm a touch typist, but a ten-pound cat draped across your fingers is basically lifting weights in order to type! 🥰🐈⬛😂 I'm not THAT good. 👀
We worked so hard yesterday, but we also got a lot of things ready for the winter. I got hundreds of feet of hose emptied of any water and on reels for the rest of the winter. Corey used the tractor to drag some of the massive treefalls over by the fire pit for fires to come.
Also got my dahlias around the lamp post cut down and a four-inch layer of mulch and new dirt put in. Remember the tree that fell on the roof edge and got us an entirely new roof from the insurance people?
Well, it left a three-foot high stump behind, which has gradually worn down with mushrooms and other agents of decay. I was able to peel enough of the decayed matter off to put a layer of that under the dirt. It will decay even faster and add tons of nutrients to the soil for next year.
This is the dahlias in late summer - in the end, they just covered the plant, it was a sea of red blooms. And, since I had everything cut back, I also repainted that lamp post back to the original black.
I think I will get some dahlia bulbs and plant them into the entire front flowerbed along the carport this coming year.
This is the carport bed in mid-summer. You can see the line of green below the railing, with the morning glories growing up out of it. We ripped all that green out - which was basically English ivy and lots and lots of weeds. The morning glories will reseed themselves, and the dahlias won't even crowd them out—the English ivy didn't!
I'm looking forward to our eighth spring and summer in this house next year. It will officially be the longest I've ever lived in one single place in the last 40 years.
It was worth the wait!
Later, my dears,
Love,

I listened to an interview with Jon Bon Jovi last week. He had throat surgery and was talking about how hard it is to get his voice back. He said he sings for 2 hours before a show. Tony Bennett said he sang for hours every day to keep his voice in shape. That’s a lot of exercise. Maybe you just need to sing more to get those muscles back in shape.
Terri—So sorry to hear of your family’s news.
I’m with those of you who don’t like big shindigs for holidays. We have said no often enough now that no one asks us. The past few years, we’ve gone out. This year, I think we’re smoking a bird. The mister will have enough meat for sandwiches for a while and I’ll get some good soup stock out of it.
Today is food prep day. Chicken filets, mole sauce, cucumber salad, boiled eggs, spiced nuts, protein bars, etc. I am increasing my protein to 120 grams per day. It will be very hard and I suspect I will make it two times a week. If I can get 100 somewhat consistently, I will consider it a win.
Hope you all have a good week.

Pandemic fall out? This morning, I was thinking about how the pandemic has changed our lives - many of us who had compromised health or medically fragile family members stopped interacting with groups, and still do. In some cases, facilities were shut down and in other cases, we chose to self-isolate. Some long term friendships of mine stopped and have not resumed. And, now living alone, I've gotten used to keeping my circle tight. I wonder what my life would have been like if the pandemic hadn't happened? I probably would have stayed a little more socially active. Just pondering.
Lisa - you and Corey got a lot done this weekend, your place looks great. Love the photos.
Tina - I've been on a protein spree too. I hadn't been logging for weeks and realize my protein intake has decreased - my goal is 90 gm so I'm ramping back up. However, coffee and nuts are natural GLP-1 sources, so I don't have the appetite I once did. Threw together some "chaffles" this morning - chicken, shredded cheese, egg - batter put into little waffle maker.
Sarcopenia & protein: I watched a short interview this morning with Dr. Rhonda Patrick and Dr. Peter Attia. They were discussing sarcopenia - how we lose muscle as we age and become more frail, and what to do about it. I was surprised they said protein intake - 1.2 gm/Kg was even more important than resistance training in keeping muscle, although strength training and exercise rank right up there for helping with balance, bone health, glucose management, etc.
Cybill Shepherd & Bruce Willis: By the way, we were discussing the final chapters of our lives, friends and relatives passing, etc. I kind of got a jolt this morning. I saw a photo of Cybill Shepherd and she is nearly unrecognizable, she's so frail. And of course Bruce Willis has severe memory problems now, he is also frail. Moonlighting was my favorite TV show for a while and now this, lol. (They can't all be Betty White!) They must be a lot older than us, right?
Make it a fabulous week!😍

For those who have dogs that like to 'autopsy' them, Lucy has never gutted a toy, but has gutted 2 beds. No more beds for her! We had given her a box with a towel in it, she loved that, so next box I get, that will be her new bed! The toys I get her, need to have some puzzle for her to figure out. She is so smart and needs problem solving toys. That stuffed turkey is great! each little toy has a squeaker in it that she loves to squeak, and I can hide treats in the turkey! She loves puzzle toys. Again, her favorite ones are made out of empty paper towel rolls, or plastic bottles. The towel rolls, I put treats inside, make a couple of access holes in the side and lock down both ends. She loves destroying those! For plastic bottles, I simply put treats inside and put the cap on tight! A happy challenge for her. Sometimes I take a 2 liter plastic bottle and do the same, but because she can't get her mouth around it, I will put a 2 inch slit in the top so she can smell the treat. Her biggest fun thing is getting the cap off! LOL. Yesterday she had a 8 oz plastic Sprite bottle which is harder plastic than the water bottles and she discovered that if she bites hard on it with the cap off, the treat will shoot out of the bottle for her to chase. Completely accidental on my part. Funniest thing ever! PS, once these are destroyed, it is time for a new one. I don't let her eat the plastic.
Currently working the Visitor Center. The Sagebrush is pollinating right now and making my eyes sore, itchy and dry. Allergic, whether the ENT nurse practitioner says I am or not!!
Thought for the Day:
Why did Mom's turkey seasoning taste a little off last year?
She ran out of thyme.

It's turned cold here at last, after the warmest autumn in history. I did get myself out of the house to toddle around the corner to book a hair appointment for next week. My down coat only just zips up! Oops! But at least I can get it on. It must be 20 years old now.
My brother says he is feeling better now and has resumed his volunteering. Eating is much easier. John had been out to spend his gift token, so I texted him to thank him. So glad things are improving.

Sue in WA - Weight stayed the same. Did okay on exercise but missed Tuesday due to phone call from old friend in SD and I wasn't watching the time. Not as good as last week watching the calories. Still need to up water consumption.
Lanette in SW WA State - Weight staying in range. Steps avg. this past week: 7068, down a bit from last week but still OK in my book. Walking 1 - 2 times per day after meals, carrying weights. Also walking more outside around the property, spreading birdseed and filling bird feeders 2 - 3 times per day. Plenty of steps. SWSY twice a week.

I could exercise my voice box, but oh poor hudband! He thinks opera is the noise a cat makes when you pull its tail. So there's that. I need access to a sound proof room. I need to explore that...🙃😁

Oh today I actually jogged to about 3 songs. Got my heart rate up to 148/153. Felt good! Picked up my two boxes of Zepbound from the clinic. Yay!
Today's breakfast was a prune, yogurt and a protein waffle with peanut butter and some honey. Lunch is a leftover slice of pizza from our outting to a nice pizzeria, then cucumbers with dressing. Dinner is a protein shake, 2 fish fillets and tartar sauce. Then my tea. Pretty simple day.

Started feeling yucky yesterday, and was still weak and dizzy this morning, so I stayed home from classes today.

Bruce Willis has frontotemporal dementia which doesn't necessarily affect the memory, or at least not at first. Apparently it is one of the more common dementias to affect people under 60.

Cybill Shepherd is 75 and Bruce Willis is 70. So yes, they are older. 😊

Yay, soup! I made chicken stock with white beans, chicken and lots of spices the other day. Remember to count it as you liquid intake for the day! Also if you use beans, or boullion, drink lots of water because you'll hold onto all the sodium.🙃

Can you order a grocery delivery with cut veggies and cut fruit and some ready to eat protein that you enjoy? I personally can't eat the frozen/readymade meals because of the salt content. I start feeling sick and my joints start hurting just a few hours after I've eaten them.
Sometimes I "graze the pantry," as I call it. When no one else is home, I head to the pantry and grab some nuts, dry fruit, and a handful of cut veggies from the crisper drawer, and my meal is done. It's actually one of my favorite meals, to be honest.
But tonight I'm making grain bowls, because I have middle son home for dinner. We're having quinoa, grilled tofu, steamed broccoli, sliced tomatoes, sliced black olives, and whatever else I can "graze" from the pantry or crisper drawer. Middle son will also probably add some shredded cheese to his.
I hope everyone is well this evening.
Much love.
