The appropriate temperature to serve coffee is considered 155º to 175º.

::Probes Dunkin Donuts Small Hot Blueberry Coffee (+1 packet equal) with kitchen thermometer::

149.8º.

Yay, better get a move on! ::sips::

OWWWW, MY EVERYTHINGGGGG.....

FORGET THAT, DUDE.

Maybe 155-175 is true if you're going to add ice-cold cream or something but this is black. So I waited a few minutes and checked. It was 138.3º so I tried again. Still ouch!

Stupid sensitive mouth parts!

Okay, waited another few minutes. The coffee is now just over 130º and is finally within the realm of just-barely-sippable. But I have to do that little-kid, air-infusey, slurpy thing. And the downside is that there's only like an 8º sweet-spot before it starts to get too cold!

It took 15 minutes in a 75º room with the lid tab open on the Dunkin Donuts paper cup to cool from 150º to 133.5º. For future reference. ;)

Who drinks their coffee that hot?!?! Come on, first-world chat with me for awhile.

I have never taken the temperature of my coffee. Good question though, I don't think I can drink it that hot since I usually have mine sit a few minutes before I drink it. Keep in mind that I recently started drinking it black and if it's flavored coffee I add 1 splenda. It is not just you, I definately cannot drink it super hot either.

It became a joke between me and my favorite barista.
Her: "Do you want that hot or drinkable today?"
    Me: "Drinkable, thanks"

    Who takes their coffee's temperature?

    I've done it, of course.

The issue isn't so much serving temperature as it is brewing temperature. Most consumer coffee machines brew at too low a temperature and produce an inferior brew. Coffee should be brewed around 195-205F. Once it's brewed, let it cool down and drink it at the temperature you like.

I haven't had DD coffee in years. I remember it as really crappy weak stuff. Most east coasters claim they like DD coffee, but that's probably because they load it up with cream and sugar.

I like the inquisitive experimental nature of it all. Anyone that measures their coffee temperature is my kind of person! As long as it is just for an experiment and not an every time kind of thing.

I work with a company that designs and manufactures espresso machines and there are several people on the line whose jobs are solely to measure temperature and measure the height of foam on cappuccinos. I kid you not. They have thermometers and rulers and measure all day, every day.

But seriously, if you're drinking real espresso or cappuccino the correct temperature is essential.

If you're steaming milk to go in espresso, usually you want between 145-155 or so depending on preference. The espresso is usually hotter. And to people who wonder about taking the temp...well for steaming milk, you need to watch the temp or you'll scald the milk

That's exactly right! haha When I lived in NY, everyone freaked out about Dunkin Donuts coffee. I finally relented when I smelled a hot blueberry brew. I liked it enough to remember that Dunkin is the place to go if I MUST get coffee on the run.

And I ran out of coffee at home yesterday. So til I go shopping, this will suffice. It's much better than Starsucks! XD

And yes, this thermometer is brand new. I used it last night for the first time to make yogurt. lol

I have plans to molest all my food with it in the coming days.

No one should ever drink coffee that is that hot. The skin of the mouth and lips is thin and very sensitive. Even liquid at 145°F can cause 3rd degree burns in <10 seconds. It's not good for any part of your digestive tract to be forced to consume things of this temperature. You did right by yourself in making sure it was cool enough to drink safely. Cheers.

Really? You're going to attack East Coasters? Not all of us have cream and/or sugar in our coffee..

I don't check the temperature of my coffee, but I do check my tea as it should be steeped as a certain temperature (depending on leaf type).

Usually steep around 180 degrees and it isn't drinkable till around 135.

Edited: who "brews" tea? Changed to steep.

I heard a story (so it may not be true) that many of these companies serve their coffee at extremely hot tempuratures because it takes you longer to drink it. The end result is less refills.

Might I recommend a book and a cup of, say, coffee with which to relax?

Oh, super interesting! I hadn't thought of it that way!

We coffee connoisseurs swear by certain brewing conditions to bring out the beans aromatics, flavors and oils, too, though. It's an art. :)

I have trouble steaming latte milk cooler than 160-165, personally. But that's milk/espresso which is a whole other ballgame.

I'm not attacking East Coasters; I'm attacking Dunkin F*cking Donuts. I'm originally from the east coast. I only mentioned "east coast" in the first place because that's the only place I ever see Dunkin Donuts.

Every time I go back east, the coffee situation seems to be getting better and better.

My fiancee takes his coffee black, I take mine with cold cream or milk and sugar ....
One day, we were at WaWa and we decided to get coffee. He handed me his so he could pay and not remembering which was mine and which was his I took a giant gulp of one. It was his.
Everything hurt. I couldnt stop crying for hours (cause I kept trying to talk annnd that wasn't fun) for the first 3-4 hours I couldnt eat anything... after that only cold items for the rest of the day. It was aweful and excrutiating- I don't know how hot they brew the coffee at WaWa but I'm pretty sure this was fresh

Sorry ur story reminded me of that. Worst day ever, i couldnt even have MY coffee :(
