I'm in again this month. My family and I will work on being closer to full primal before the end of the month.

    End of October Stats:
    - Weight: 222 lbs
    - Neck: 17"
    - Waist: 42.5"
  • I see this is a 'closed' group. What's the protocol here? Do I have to request to join in? Starting Whole30 for the umpteenth time, and could use some support. It's not the food I have issues with (I've been basically Palaeo for over 5 years) it's the quantities - I feel I'm eating too much in one go, and I'm struggling to eat 3 times a day. It seems to be easier to follow the plan in the US than over here in the UK. The one thing I know I MUST cut out is the goats' yoghurt (even though I do only have 100g per day); it's NOT on-plan.

The protein sources I have are eggs, steak, sardines in EVOO
Fat sources: - olives, EVCO, guacamole (store bought, no oil, but it does contain some double cream. I actually have an aversion to handling avocados - and I can't stand them in any other form - I like to keep it simple (think that's because I'm autistic, I actually don't have the patience to cook anything very much - and you would not believe the number of pans I've ruined because I forgot I had something cooking until the smoke alarm went off!)) EVOO
Carbs: - rocket, spinach and watercress (I eat as much as I can, but it's really expensive and I'm on welfare. When Dad's grown it, then I can have it from the garden, but not at this time of year). Fruit, when I do indulge, is berries.

I also have a ready supply of proper cider vinegar (organic, unpasteurised, and with the mother). I tend to pour this over my food.

At the moment, I'm struggling to eat more than once or twice a day. I began intermittent fasting about 3 years ago, and it's become habitual now. I've only eaten once today, 20 hours ago, and that was 118g of fat, 84g of protein, and 5g carbs. I do not have the urge to eat anything non-Palaeo (apart from yoghurt and that only appears to be around TOTM).

I'm not doing it for weight/inch loss, I'm doing it to combat gallstone symptoms (though some of the symptoms I have I don't think have anything to do with gallstones, whatever my consultant says to the contrary. I get EXTREMELY bloated, particularly my belly, bum, chest and boobs (I've not been able to wear a bra since February) and I appear to now have a size 2 waist, but size 6 hips! Before all this I was 30-24-33 - a perfect size 2 - the smallest I've EVER been and this is really beginning to take its toll on the state of my mental health, too, to see my once-fit and toned body becoming a shapeless bloated blob. I lost 16 stone in 3 years (probably the reason I've got gallstones now). When my chest isn't so swollen, I can fit into some of my tighter dresses, but then I can't do the buttons up round my bum! My waist is still 24" and I have found some leggings with enough 'give' in them to accommodate my swollen belly and bum; I've had to star buying 'tall' ones to compensate for the bloat. This bloating came right out of the blue, and I'm not going to think for one nanosecond I've started gaining again because I've not touched grains in more than 5 years (nor any other form of starchy carbs, either)

I just want to start deflating so I can wear my proper clothes again!

I know this sounds ridiculous, but I really do think I need telling how much to eat per meal; the guidelines in the Whole30 guide are far too vague for me (again this is an autistic thing, I'm sure).

Sorry this is so long, but I would be grateful for any support...

    Rosa,

do you exercise? Exercise is extremely important to maintain or succeed at body fat loss.

your exercise regimine may look something like:
    day1 upper body strength training
day 2 cardio / aerobic hill climbing moderate pace
day 3 lower body strength training
day 4 cardio / aerobic walking moderate pace
day 5 flexibility training+ quick upper body strength
day 6 sprints and plyometrics + quick lower body strength
day 7 cardio / aerobic hill climbing moderate pace

without exercise, your body will not burn your fuel. Eating without burning = gaining weight. Since you are gaining weight on your hips this suggests that you are not walking or climbing at all. Also, have you had any bloodwork done lately? Gall stones is inticative of not having enzymes in your body to digest fat. That's a huge problem if you consume allot of meats, dairy, seafood.

I'm in. Will get my results from October Whole 30 Challenge in a day or two, then I'll post my November start stats here. Hugs, everyone.

Are you ready to make the committment?

Are you ready to heal your body? Can you commit for 30 days?

I want to re-iterate a couple of points. As I mentioned, no one here is expected to be perfect as we are allowing raw dairy (if you can find it in your area) or at the very least purchase organic dairy.

However, other than the exception of allowing dairy, no cheating. This is about committing yourself to begin the healing process.

As mentioned on the Whole 30 website:
The only way this will work is if you give it the full thirty days, no cheats, slips or “special occasions.” This isn’t Whole9 playing the tough guy. This is a FACT, born of education and experience. You need such a small amount of any of these inflammatory foods to break the healing cycle – one bite of pizza, one splash of milk in your coffee, one lick of the spoon mixing the batter within the 30 day period and you’ve broken the “reset” button. You must commit to the full program, exactly as written. Anything less and we make no claims as to your results, or the chances of your success. Anything less and you are selling yourself – and your potential results – short.

    Can you commit ?

I am sorry, I am not trying to be a hard *kitten* or anything, but this challenge is not to be taken half heartedly. We are taking charge of our health and well being.

I'm entirely commited to the Primal WOE & lifestyle. I want to be in, but at the same time, I am not hardcore enough to commit to what you have laid out here. Guess I'm out after all. Thanks!

Ok I need to write out my goals so I stay focused and commit to them.
Stay away from the scale. Not hard to do when I am cramming my face with a lot of carbs but harder when I am eating "clean"
I did resist the temptation today though so that is all I have to worry about is today.
Try new foods and new ways of preparing them.
Coconut milk in my coffee is really awesome. Just found that out. Thanks guys I would never have tried it if I had not read it here.
commit to exercise 3 times a week. This sounds good in my head but pushing myself to do it is hard. No excuses accepted though so I WILL DO IT. Have a great day all :)

I'm entirely commited to the Primal WOE & lifestyle. I want to be in, but at the same time, I am not hardcore enough to commit to what you have laid out here. Guess I'm out after all. Thanks!

You did very well in the October challenge. Don't leave the group, stay and do what works for you. :flowerforyou:

Lay out your own goals and stick to them..........

Ok, I can't remove my post about being committed to the challenge in the way that I am for the month.

I just want everyone to realize you get out what you put in. So, the more you stay committed to the challenge the way it is laid out, the more rewards you reap from it.

My apologies for offending anyone as this was not my intention.

Last night I told my potential new personal trainer about Primal/Paleo eating and exercising. I gave him a few sources to reference because if he's going to train me, I want him to know what my diet is like and how I want to exercise. Who knows--maybe I can get him to convert ;)

    Hey there everyone.

    Sorry if I offended anyone.

I just want what is best for everyone. Personally for me, I have to stick to it on the straight and narrow because of my health conditions.

Maybe I am not the one that needs to be leading this group. I will find a replacement and graciously bow out.

Who wants to take over leading the group?

Thanks and have a great day.

How is everyone doing?.. I managed to get 50 grams of protein within 45 minutes of waking.. it takes time to cook stuff.. especially with kids,a baby and a dog needing my attention first thing. I was going to weigh and take measurements but I'm puffy today and decided I really don't want to know. so i'm going to skip it.ha ha!

I think you should stay on as leader. I think it's an awesome idea to just have everyone set their own goals that they want to hit for the month and use this thread to be accountable.

Can someone remind me why you should eat protein so quickly in the morning? I've heard it before...Is it because your body burns it up so quickly? I am certainly all about eating breakfast, I know how important it is, but I usually don't want to eat until like 1.5-2 hours after waking, once I get to work. If my body is just going to burn up the protein so quickly in the morning, why can't I just not eat it, and wait until I am hungry for it?

    Thanks!

Most people do the 50 grams of protein to get their body to reset Leptin Resistance.

It is for the leptin reset to reset my metabolism strict paleo with 50 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking.. some of us are doing it but you certainly don't have to meet the 30 day challenge... paleo/primal rules state eat to hunger.. many people like IF- intermitten fasting.. so they naturally skip breakfast.. justt do what feels right for you.

grokette. you are our mod and leader. :) let the newbies read and learn, don't take negativity personally. If someone says they can't, that's their problem. You and I know, can't is a word that just isn't polite on our thread. lol, no biggie. But keep your chin up, paleo is a wol that many (including me until August) just can't see themselves doing.

I used to think that this was something you did to get cut before a show. Wow, was I wrong. Paleo is a wol for health. You know it, I know it. Eventually, others will know it. No amount of begging or apologizing to someone to research and commit to the guidelines is worth the stress. We can help, but we just have to be good at that. Our testamonies and experiences will help allot of people. That's so worth sticking around.

    Newbies,
we only ask that you commit to doing your best if you say you are joining us. The Oldtimers here like me who've done this for at least one full month are sharing what has worked for us and we don't mind assisting you in your paleo journey.

    Newbies
need to look at the paleo guidelines before commiting. That's all we ask. Don't make us crazy (should I, shouldn't I?, what to do? I guess I won't....) we don't like it when you make us crazy. I don't like it when you make my mod crazy.

Please stay off posting in our closed group if you are not yet a group members. How do you become a member? Read the paleo 30day guidelines, and if you are ready to set your goals and have a support system here, post that you are joining, introduce yourself and be ready for some fun.

Please consider reading the October paleo 30 thread
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/357394-october-whole-30-for-paleo-primal-support-peeps
completely for information before joining here, so you are informed and have a bit of a vibe to what we are doing here. If you have been in communication with me or another member, welcome. If you are a serious lurker, welcome. If you are wishy washy and think this is a fad diet, hmmmm, this may not be the group you want to join but you are welcome to read the posts to learn more about paleo. There is tons of info. available in last month's thread.

For the hard core Paleo, Grok On!

Thanks! As I told Grokette, I'll give this a try and see if it impacts my hunger levels throughout the day...worth a shot!

Okay, so I took my measurements this morning before breakfast:

    Weight: 134.2 lbs (I'm 5'3.5")
    Chest: 37.5"
    Waist: 27.5"
    Hips: 37.25"

I'm not trying to lose weight since I'm at a "happy weight" for my body and my husband and I are trying to conceive (or, actually, I am trying to regulate my cycles).

    My goals are:

    1) To keep a clean paleo diet this month to help combat the inflammation (very evident in my skin but probably present throughout my body and not really beneficial to the whole cycle-regulation thing). So, for me, that means: no grains, no dairy, no alcohol, no caffeine. I *am* going to keep my small square of 85% dark chocolate in the evening. I don't see this as a problem food for me (so long as it is a SQUARE not a BAR).

    2) Lift Heavy Things 2x/week

    3) Hikes near my home to get sun

    4) Folate, magnesium, cod liver oil daily

    5) SLEEP! Off the computer by 9, in bed with lights out by 11.

I second or third this as well and remind everyone that the written word may not sound the same when you read it as what the writer intended. :)

    help,

    how to pan fry safely.

I'm just now getting into pan frying my chicken or meats. I prefer full frying or just baking. Last night I fried up some yummy chicken legs in bacon fat from last week's bacon, and the fat was spitting allot. Burned my face with one of the pops. :( What's up with that? Is there a safer way to pan fry? I used a deep pot. Maybe holding up a screen as I turn the legs? Any advice would be helpful. - BWB.

I would temporarily remove the pan from the heat when you want to turn food, I have found that to be helpful. As an extra measure, you can hold up the pot lid as a shield.

Hope everyone's Wednesday is going well so far. I'm about to go eat my lunch at the picnic table again, it's still flipflop weather here which makes me enormously happy! I have been incredibly protein-hungry lately, not really sure exactly why that is but I'm going to quell the craving with quite a bit of rotisserie chicken.

I'm still in! I started in the middle of October so I don't have new starting info just yet! I need to buckle down for the last half of my month though! I've had too many bumps in the road so far. I got my husband on board so I'm now cooking this way for both of us, which really helps. Good luck to everyone!

BWB, like jamk1446, i also remove the pan from heat for about 30 seconds, listen to check if the oil has mellowed a bit and then remove the lid. I also like wearing long sleeves and using my oven baking mitts as "gloves" to prevent oil from splattering on my hand
