Thanks for the replies! It's not really that I can't get the kids to eat meat... they love it! It's more or less the PRICE of meat for a family of 6!!!

I have 4 kids between 5 and 9 years old. My husband has always done the cooking, and none of them do Atkins or low-carb but me.
A lot of times, like tonight, we just have chicken salads. I found some low-carb tortillas (3 net carbs) and so I can always have what everyone is having., and whenever they have pasta or rice, my husband will grill or sautee squash or zuchini because they make a good substitue. Sometimes, we'll have pork chops with broccoli or a meat and veggie. We've never been big on starchy foods, so it's not unusual for us to not have bread or rice at all. I don't even think we have any processed food in the house right now. It's actually cheaper to eat whole foods and meats, you just have to find deals. Also, a Sam's or Costco membership is helpful! Good luck!

My favortie store to shop for veggies is Sprouts. I can't even believe the prices sometimes. They can actually be cheaper than a farmer market! Love love love that store! Plus they have bulk foods in barrels too. I get a lot of nuts and such there. They even have the ground flax meal!

I'm away to a Christmas market in Germany next weekend......not sure ill not be cake to not have am alcoholic drink but believe vodka is 0 carb......what is the best mixer to have with it? Normally I'd have diet coke.......or is wine ok if only 2 ?
Vodka and other hard liquor is zero carbs but you still need to be careful with them. Any non-sugared mixer would be fine. I personally prefer flavored vodkas with Diet Coke. Good ones are vanilla, lemon and orange.

Hi everyone. I started induction a couple weeks back and I will admit I cheated, not everyday but some and so my weight loss was slow but I was happy I was losing weight at all, so I lost about 5 pounds during that first week and then stopped doing Atkins, not completly but there were some dinners when I just said "forget it". I have been maintaing this weight loss for the most part until I discovered this morning I gained a pound but thats what I get for not working out and incresing my carb intake. So on friday I ordered the book from amazon and it will get delivered sometime today. I figure once I read the book and really understand the science behind it maybe it will help keep me on track. I am happy to report that not counting calories is no longer a big issue for me since I know that I can lose weight with this diet. Induction sucks but i believe I can do well if I really put my mind to it. Okay that is all

Thanks! I agree, I'm huge on the Mama Lupe low carb tortillas! I use them for wraps, bake them for chips, broil them for pizza crust, etc. I also use pork rinds as a substitute for bread crumbs. It definitely helps. We do have a Sam's, not sure about Costco... we might? Still waiting for Joplin to rebuild. We're supposed to be getting all kinds of new stores, so that will be nice, :-) We are blessed to be able to rebuild and finally catch up with the times. Honestly, anyone (unless they're still living in a FEMA trailer... and there are 400 of those families) who complains about the state of Joplin right now is just a big whiner. We have been blessed with quick clean-up and new buildings (for the most part). I can't wait to see the new face of Joplin!

I have been incredibly bad about logging in this past couple of weeks! I promise I will get back to my diary logging after Thanksgiving. I am also giving myself Thanksgiving to eat whatever I want. Not by choice, by my husband refuses to cook a special meal for me. One meal won't kill me. We are having it so late, 7 pm, that I can just do the one meal, and get right back on Atkins on Friday. We're also aiming for no leftovers.
The whoosh fairy must have visited, because I lost 2.5 pounds in the last week! Hope it sticks!
Oh, and whoever suggested that Banana MIM....I made it, and it was delicious! It's going into the rotation!

I'm glad you liked the banana mim! Banana bread is my weakness, so I'm glad to have found something comparable!

It did taste like banana bread! I need to add a little more splenda, but I love it!

Get Gary Taubes' "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It" and/or "Good Calories, Bad Calories". Atkins will give you the diet and Taubes will give you the science. Both a must have for low-carbers.

BTW, welcome aboard!!!! Also there is a low-carb group. I was surprise this thread is not part of that group but probably since we didnt have groups prior to the start of this thread.

I'm back! Went off Atkins for Thanksgiving, ended up with a stomach virus, and carb loaded all weekend. Scale said I put on 5 pounds, but I'm sure most of it was water weight! So, back to Induction for me today! Let's hope it all comes off, and more!

And for those of you who think you want to carb load once a week or once a month....Not Worth It, IMO!
I felt bloated and yucky, and the salt has made me retain water.

    ^ this!

I agree 100% One days when I was carb heavy, I felt sluggish and just not myself. It really is not worth feeling like crap to enjoy bread or pasta.

Plus, we have so many low carb swap out to use now. In fact, I am addicted to swap outs. My favs:
    Cauliflower for mashed potatoes
    Eggplant strips for lasagna noodles
Pork rinds for breading (think fried chicken etc)
    Mushroom caps for pizza crust

I have yet to dive into low carb flour / mixes. Don't know if I will b/c of the price and tatse.

Great switchouts! My husband has been grilling zuchini and squash in a cast iron skillet for most of my bread substitutes. I snack on pork rinds, and I found a low carb tortilla with only 3 net carbs, but I limit those to only once or twice a week! If we have sliders, a friend on here showed me a recipe for a MIM that can be used as buns!

I've baked with soya flour, and it's actually pretty easy and tasty! I went to the Atkins website and printed some dessert recipes. I wouldn't recommend unless you're in phase 2 or higher, because the soy flour and splenda seemed to stall my weight loss!

Hello! So happy to see a Atkins support group.
I had a very CARB HAPPY Thanksgiving and having challenges getting back into the swing of things. Still have big cravings for sweets! Each day is a new beginning.
Anyone have issues w/Splenda causing cravings? I use the liquid Splenda but wondering if the Splenda/Coffee might be increasing cravings. I also eat a lot of dairy?????

    Any suggestions?

I had a carb heavy three days last week, and I felt awful! I was so full of water, I just finally got my ankles and fingers back! It's definitely not worth it, but it is nice to eat normally once in awhile with friends and family. I haven't checked out the damage on the scale yet, I'm waiting a couple more days.

My cravings went away after awhile, just give it time! It's easier if you can find substitutes for your favorite things. I haven't noticed Splenda causing any adverse side affects. Just keep at it!

I don't know that it's the Splenda causing cravings...it may be the caffeine!
Too much Splenda, dairy and salt may stall your weight loss.

After a nice 5 mile run after work, and a low carb day, I dropped nearly two pounds overnight. Thank you, Whoosh Fairy! I'm glad to have those Thanksgiving-caused pounds gone.

Have you ever noticed that when you give yourself a carb day, it makes all the cravings for bread and sugar come back twice as bad! OMG I am having the hardest time getting my mind back to where it needs to be!

SuInAZ....great job! I think I need to do that...minus the 5 mile run! lol Maybe a kickboxing class instead.

Hello all -- I'm new to MFP, but not really new to Atkins. I'm here because my primary care doctor suggested I check into it. Things look great so far, and I'm happy to see an Atkins support site.

One question -- although I have figured out how to change macronutrient levels under "goals", I don't really have a clue how to set them for Atkins. I figure I'm shooting for a max of 6 ounces of protein per meal, and 20 net grams of carbs (I'm still in the induction phase). But under "goals" the carbs listed aren't net carbs, right? They are total carbs. My total carb count should be something over 20 grams, per day, but that would seem like somewhat of a guessing game.

So all that makes it seem like you just kind of pick some numbers that might estimate out, more or less, give or take...or am I missing something here?

Thanks for any and all assistance!

I wore ankle weights all day while shopping and that night when I took them off, my ankles looked freaking fab-U-lous!!! My calves were sore but it was soooo worth it. Just an FYI for those puffy cankle days :)

For atkins, you want something like 5% carbs, 35% protein and 60% fat. When you set up your diary to show these, also add in fiber so that you can subtract that from your TOTAL carbs to come up with your Net. Then to keep track of that, just add it to your comments for the diary that day :)
