Question about the Birth Control Shot

I've been considering switching from the Birth Control pill to the Birth Control Shot...my concern is that many people are telling me it's gonna make me gain weight and make it harder to lose weight.
I need to know if this is true or not.
What experience have YOU had?

This is a medical question that you should ask your PCP or your healthcare specialist who will be administering this.
Drugs affect people differently...
For me, I wont even describe the problems I ran into.... because I was only amongst the smaller percentage affected by it...
Please - talk with your doctor.. they know your health-situations... we dont...0 -
I gained 75 pounds on it very very rapidly and it has been hell shedding it. But that's just my experience. Other people don't have that problem....0

O really? Wow. I'm sorry you had problems with it. I guess I never really thought about that. I've never heard of anyone having issues besides weight gain. I'm sorry. I'm definately gonna talk to my doctor about it. I was just looking for others experiences.0 -
I started MFP and the shot at the same time, no problems here.
You should check out the women's group to discuss these sorts of things. It's called "Periods, Period"0 -

Are you SERIOUS? Wow! Girl, I'm sorry! That sucks. I wonder what it is about the shot that puts weight on people. I'm definately gonna ask my doctor more about this...if nothing else, I'm curious.0 -

I've heard of people gaining weight with this, the I.U.D. is supposed to be good.....one of my girlfriends uses this and has for years without weight gain0

I can't find it.0 -
you should be able to look up the medication on the web also it will list the side effects and how common they are.0

I was on Depo for close to 10 years. During that time my weight dropped to a frighteningly low number.
Many women gain weight - some a little and some a lot - and some gain none. It affects everyone differently. It's not really something you can predict.0 -
I used to get the shot. I don't know if it's the same kind as you want to get but it's the one that you go in for every three months and you don't have a period. Yeah it's kinda nice not to have to worry about it, but.....
If it's the same kind, it works by putting your body in a state of pseudo-menopause... meaning I became physically like an old lady at 23. The thought of sex was gross to me because those hormones were turned off by the drug. I knew something was wrong, so I got off of it. It took an entire year for my period to get back regular. It was horrible. I did gain weight, but not much. I would imagine this depends on the person.
If you are looking to change for a more convenient method, I highly recommend the ring. Once a month.0 -
Everyone is different, but my daughter gained 25lbs with the shot. She was always a size 2. You should discuss this with your doctor to be on the safe side, weight gain is not the only side effect.0
-
Everyone reacts differently, but you should get the implant instead, because that can be taken out if you get bad side effects. The shot lasts for months nd can't be rid of0
-
someday everyone will have there DNA sequenced and we will be able to predict how you react to a drug..until that day arrives we have to just consider everything a crap shoot.
ClinicalPharmacology.com lists both weight gain and weight loss as a side effect but doesn't mention prevelence or frequency of either.Progestins may also cause spotting, breakthrough bleeding, weight gain, nausea/vomiting, breast tenderness or mastalgia, and mild headache. These adverse effects occur less frequently with progestin-only OCs compared to combination OCs. Other reported adverse reactions during medroxyprogesterone therapy include anxiety, diarrhea, dizziness, alopecia, dermatitis, acne vulgaris, melasma, chloasma, pruritus, urticaria, rash (unspecified), anorexia, appetite stimulation, libido decrease, libido increase, breast discharge, cervicitis, galactorrhea, weight loss, fatigue, hirsutism, abdominal pain, leukorrhea, unusual weakness, pelvic pain, back pain, arthralgia, paresthesias, chest pain (unspecified), dyspareunia, anemia, drowsiness, seizures, syncope, dyspnea, sinus tachycardia, fever, diaphoresis, chills, and vaginitis.0 -

I have not done the shot, but if you are looking for something you don't have to worry about 'every single day' you could also consider NuvaRing or an IUD. The upside to NuvaRing is you put it in and leave it in for 3 weeks, so it's not a daily thing, but you are also able to cease using it immediately if you feel you need to. The upside to the IUD is it goes in and stays in for up to several years, although you do have to go back to your dr to have it taken out. But at least you don't have to wait several months for it to wear off if you decide you don't like it. You can just go get it taken out whenever you can get an appointment.
The NuvaRing has hormones similar to the pill. Some IUDs have hormones and some don't (there are different types). You can talk to your dr about all these options and the risks/benefits of each and decide what sounds best for you.0 -
I did this when I was 18 (15 years ago). I gained weight overnight (no joke, woke up one morning just all bloated and the shorts I wore the day before, I couldn't button up). Total gain was 50 lbs.
Did one shot and spotted the whole 3 months - went back to dr. with concerns and was told it would go away.
Shot number 2 had been bleeding for 6 months by then and had put on 50 lbs. dr didn't seem phazed.....she was a real ***** anyways.
Went in for shot 3 by this time had been bleeding for 9 months straight and was told it was normal and would even out.
Eh, young and dumb......if I had to do it over again, I would have only gotten the one shot and and said to hell with it.....
During the time of the weight gain, I started cutting back on my food and running every single day. It didn't budge. I had my last shot in December (I think) and by my wedding in July I had lost about 40 lbs not really trying that hard.
I know it affects everyone different, I have stories about other birth control too - it could just be me, I get affected in a negative way - who knows.......going to get my husband a vasectomy one of these days and that should solve it.0 -
i give this to pts, i would say 1/100 gain weight and when they do they do ,you cant predict the pt some times someone thin gets big sometimes someone big gets bigger if any history of depression can make worse and the vast majority the periods will stop however others will bleed continually try the fpa website unfotunately what suits one person doesnt suit another and pts only tend to comment on a medicine that didnt work rather than on one that did.just some thoughts0

You have no reason to be sorry for asking...
Its just (like another poster here who is an RN), Ive worked in clinics where I had to get authorizations from insurance companies for injectionable-BC medications and have had to print hand-outs from their websites explaining the contraindications in taking these meds (same things you get when you fill an RX at the pharmacy)... the literature, although very easy to understand (thank goodness for companies that give actual ENGLISH translations and not medico-legal jargon), but the reality of how it could potentially react.... its hard to say because patients are all different from one another....
For me as the patient in my own medical office, it was determined that things 'should be ok' but you just never know... I had many problems with it and some that manifested from it.
Im back on oral contraceptives (I take Ocella) and combined with other meds Im taking from an Endocrinologist, my health is SOOOO MUCH BETTER....
But, you have nothing to be sorry about my dear... its just when it comes to drugs, contraceptives, medical questions, healthcare, yadda yadda yadda.... you definitely need to talk with your doctor... no one here knows your complete medical history, and that is private information that your doctor will automatically have in front of them to appropriately help you...
Good luck!!!!0 -
I was on the shot for about 7 years and in that time I gained about 75 lbs which I have been unable to shed. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless it's their only option. I know results vary from person to person and some don't experience the weight gain but from personal experiences many do. Not to mention if you want to have kids down the road it can take a while to get pregnant after going off it. This isn't saying it will just that it can. When my husband and I got married I was on the shot and started doing research about getting pregnant after it and some people still didn't have a bun in the oven after 2 years so I switched to the pill until we were ready which was about a year. Just do your research and make sure you are aware of ALL the side effects during and after going off it before you make your decision.0

I'm a nurse as well and i really like the shot. I haven't gained any weight although I did stall with losing but it's hard to say what caused that. I think you need to talk to your doctor.0
-
i had it for years and gained weight which i found hard to lose, also was terribly moody all the time! have had mirena IUD for last 5 years and no issues, have managed to lose weight on that.
Dr said the hormones in the shot dont actually make you put on weight, more that it makes you want to eat more, so if you have good willpower it might be ok for you.
its best to have a chat with your Dr if you have any concerns, as once you have had it you are stuck with it for at least 3 months, if you have been on it longer can take up to a year to get out of your system totally!0 -
Don't do it! I gained 40 pounds and bleed for 8 months straight! It's horrible! It screws you up so bad! Find another alternative!0

i had the depo shot when i was 18, i turned into a fat miserable moody cow and spotted every day for 3 weeks at a time. my cousin had it and had no problems atall, however after being off it for 7 years she hasnt had a period again. then again, i also know two other people who had it, one lost so much weight she had to stop and the other is still on it now and is fine. my point??? it affects everyone so differently, your dr will help you decide but just make sure you read all the side effects.0

sorry, double post0

The first thing my Endocrinologist told me when I went in for weight loss was to get off the shot. He said if I wanted any decent shot at losing weight I should find a different method. Anyway, here is my experience with the shot:
After I first had the shot, I got my period for about 30 days straight. Not just spotting, full on period. The doctor and pharmacist assured me that sometimes this happens to people when they first start it. It really pissed me off because I chose it so I wouldn't get my period. That month I was also a nightmare to be around.
Other than the first month, it was great for the 18 months I was on it. No period. Didn't gain too much - under 10 pounds (I wasn't tracking back then).
Then I decided to go off Depo. That’s easy enough just don’t get the shot again. But my period didn't come back... I started doing some hardcore research and found some people that depo caused infertility in and freaked out. My doctor told me some women take up to a year to get their period back. It took me almost two years. Now my period is back, and normal, and I am actually happy/relieved when I see it (or has happy as you can be for a period). Now in the back of my head I’m always a bit worried that I may have done some damage.
If I could go back, I'd have done more research and probably picked something different. Good luck with whatever you chose.0 -
I lost all my weight while on Depo.0

Weight gain was the least of my problems on Depo (and yes, there was a fair amount).
Full out bleeding out of nowhere with zero predicibility. Eventually had to keep extra pants at work.
Waking up in the middle of the night in full on sobbing fits. No idea why I was crying.
Hated the idea of anyone even touching me.
Horrible acne (a couple of which I still have slight scarring from years later)
Took 7 months after I stopped getting the shots to get a period. Do you know how many preganancy tests I had to do during that time??
Got an IUD 7 years ago, and I'm on my 2nd one now. I love it. Don't have to go to a dr every three months and know pretty much to the day when my next period will be. Couldn't be happier and wouldn't get Depo again for anything0 -
I went on this for about six months. In that time I gained 30 lbs. I NEVER had a weight issue before this injection and have struggled with my weight since. It messed up my hormones big time. I also had an issue with my hands breaking out into hives just before I would start my period. It eventually started to affect all my extremities. It would only occur just before my period so I knew it was because of this shot and hormonally related. Couldn't get any doctor to believe me that all my issues were related to the shot. I will NEVER take another medication without thoroughly investigating it first. Eventually, after 10 years, I am starting to go through perimenopause and only have a period every 3-4 months. Guess what? No hives because I'm not having a period. I only have the hives/itching when I am going to start my period. Please don't go on this injection. The side effects are too numerous to count, and can include sterilization! I have read countless horror stories from women who went on this drug and couldn't get pregnant, some women have weight gain up to 100 lbs, and as I said many, many other issues. I believe there is actually a class action lawsuit in the states right now against the pharmaceutical company because of the problems women have experienced because of Depo-Provera.0
