Losing weight, without a gym
Replies

Twoyears ago I was doing a lot of excercise. I walked a lot of trails and excercised on the wii. I played volleyball once a week and bowled on a league once a week.I watched what I ate and lost 32 pounds. Unfortunately, last year I broke my foot while playing volleyball in May. I couldn't do any of the activities I had been doing. It was October before I had surgery so I have been a couch potato for the last three months. I am hoping to get back to at least doing some walking this year. It will be April before I am allowed to play volleyball again. You can lose weight without a gym membership. I have never had one.0

I've never been to a gym. I do go to my local pool a lot, but otherwise, I use my Wii fitness games such as Zumba and EA Active, (highly recommend both by the way), workout DVDs and walk everywhere.
As a student I can't afford gym membership, and if I'm honest, even if I had it, I'm much more likely to workout in my own room for an hour, than walk a mile to the gym, sweat and pant in front of strangers, and then walk a mile home a sweaty tired mess to shower properly, taking up around 3 hours of my morning/night.0 -
I lost my weight through diet alone. Exercise is very beneficial, don't get me wrong, but it is not the most vital aspect of weight loss- diet is.
Although exercise builds muscle which makes for a better metabolism and healthier heart
Like I said- it is very beneficial...0 -
Absolutely! I walk or jog with my dogs (huskies---VERY high energy, they need their exercise). But even before I owned dogs, I never had a gym membership. There are outside tracks that I would run on, or I'd run in my parents neighborhood. Just pick somewhere safe and well lit, preferably where there are other people0

I walk, zumba, and play on the wii (boxing will wear you out). Have lost 40 pounds so far (started losing before I joined this site). Good luck, you can do it!!!!!!!0

I agree! Exercise tones you up, but diet is more important, imo.0 -
The past year I've lost all my weight (40+ pounds) without a gym membership. My husband had a treadmill when we got married and a little weight bench. We added an elliptical that we got for $200 cuz it was a display the regular price was $599, our old neighbors gave us a punching bag for helping them move and I have a a couple Jillian and Biggest Loser dvds. My friend also gave me a double jogging stroller for watching her kids short notice one day (she had upgraded to a Bob stroller.)
I try to mix things up in order to lose the weight. I personally prefer the elliptical but right now I'm training for a half marathon so I've obviously been using the treadmill a lot more. I run 3x a week, do the elliptical 1x a week and I'll usually do a dvd 1-2x a week to get some strength training and abs in. Thursday is my rest/recover day.0 -
There are lots of great ways to lose weight at home. Outdoors, running/walking/biking. Indoors, cardio machines, dvds - p90x, insanity, zumba, Jillian Michaels dvds, etc etc. If you are on a tight budget there are lots of free youtube videos and online info that can help you create your own routine at home. Also, just get creative - Canned goods or textbooks make for good dumbbell like weights.0

I lost all of my weight on my own at home...running, riding, very basic weights & most importantly, PORTION CONTROL. I just recently joined a private gym with a private PT to take me to the next level...strength, and, oh, getting ripped at 41!0

By tracking what I eat. Running helps a lot too.0

Haven't had a gym membership in several years.
I love the new Les Mills PUMP (it's like BodyPump taught in gyms). I also walk/jog, Turbofire, P90X2 and so much others.0 -
I've lost over 54 pounds so far by exercising in my living room (and, obviously, eating right). I have an elliptical and started out using that as my main form of exercise. Then I did Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred (twice, back to back); Pauline Nordin's Butt Bible; Jillian Michaels' Ripped in 30; a whole bunch of stuff from Exercise TV when it was still available. Currently, I am doing ChaLean Extreme and I love it! Even when I worked out with a personal trainer at a gym, I never pushed myself as hard as I do now.
Check out your local library, because many libraries have a fairly good selection of workout dvds so you can sample some to find what you like.0 -
I lost all of my weight doing at home programs (for example, Turbo Fire) and XBox Kinect games that will have you moving.0

I do 5 to 10 minutes of calisthenics most mornings and try to walk for 30 to 60 minutes per day. As per Chairless's comment though I do this to keep active and eat more.
Good luck,

I don't have a gym membership, but I do have a really good home gym, a weight set that goes from 5-50 lbs, treadmill, and other accessories that I've collected over time (bands, balance boards, skip rope, ball). I didn't pay a fortune either... look on kijiji, craigslist, you'll find great deals on the things people buys brand new, use twice & sell for less than 1/2 the price they paid ;-).
As an ex-personal trainer, but still a personal trainer at heart :-), there are so many exercises you can do from home without a gym, and you won't have to fight others for your turn at the equipment. Walking, running, hiking, there are so many good DVD's out there, but you have to be careful when doing weight & strength training to watch your posture... posture is everything when doing these types of exercise or any exercise... if you don't have proper posture, your not benefiting from the exercise and could do more harm than good. Keeping proper posture is easier said than done, especially as we fatigue during exertion. Always good to have a buddy system to help with that. If you've never worked out before, then a gym would be a good place to start to get that advise, or get a couple personal training sessions.
Best wishes to you all!0 -
I have an elliptical (got on craigslist cheap), a power rider (craigslist), bike (craigslist) and I play dance party 2 and 3 plus zumba on the Wii.
LOVE IT! I make use of other people's old equipment (or sometimes not so old either) too!! No tax, no boxes, no stuff to put together, sometimes, and no packaging to throw in the landfill. The smarmy garbage reductionist in me loves it too...0
