BT1988--Your description sounds A LOT like Polycystic Ovaries. Esp. since you're talk about "drilling" and hormone issues. Please talk to your Endo about it, just to clear that ambiguity up. People with PCOS have a hard time losing weight (and regain quickly). Having cysts on your ovaries causes your body to product extra hormones, so, if you're experiencing acne, unwanted face/body hair growth, hair loss, unusually periods, bad PMS, problems losing weight, trouble conceiving (if this is something you are trying for/want), dry skin, digestive issues...you should talk to your doctor about it, and see what treatment options there are for you.
People with PCOS have a 50% higher likelihood of insulin production problems (insulin tolerance and production seem to be tied to hormone levels). Ranging from insulin resistance to full on type-2 Diabetes. While you're waiting for your Dr. appointment try starting a diabetic friendly eating plan--possibly something focused on the "Glycemic Index." You want to go with carb sources that are slow to digest (complexed carbs, not simple sugars). Don't cut carbs out entirely, your body does need them to function, but a smart, lower carb eating habit could help you.0 -

hey everyone, thanks so much for your help.
I been taking a break for a few weeks because I was doing two jobs for the season. Finally done and I can start on my normal life. Just went to the gym today to do a little stuff. Tomorrow, I start my first personal training session and I signed up for a challenge. I want to fit in a size 16 in three months and hopefully lose 40lbs. I just started following the zone diet today. I will see my doctor this Thursday. Hope they can also help me understand my really bad mood swings. I get these a lot when I do not eat right. I've been thinking its depression but when I eat fine and workout, I always feel okay. As soon as I eat like crap, I start being *****y =/

FWIW BT, 40 lbs in 3 months is an extreme amount of weight loss. I implore you not to be too hard on yourself if you don't hit it. Even 10 lbs a month is pretty steep unless you are MORBIDLY obese. Not to say it can't happen, but it's not the norm.0

In agreement with this, I'd suggest more weight lifting and intervals, not only to burn fat better, but having more muscle will probably have the clothes fitting better compared to just losing fat, if that much pure fat loss was even possible at the lower level you are at.
I'd bet a toned up body with firm muscle but only 20lbs lost would look better than the more realistic 30lb loss you might obtain otherwise without it.0 -

I was hoping 40 might be reasonable =/ I just started my first personal training today and it really kicked my butt! I do it twice a week and I get two extra free sessions a month. So, I am hoping all the hard work will pay off.
I am also making sure I am getting enough sleep. I think my diet is better but I am still always over some carbs and protein =/ but I took all kinds of wheat or any types of bread and pasta out. Its all fruits, veggies and lean protein. Not much redmeat, sometimes red meat makes me sick =/
Tomorrow is the doctor appointment, so hopefully they can give me some more answers that can help me with my weight loss.0 -
So everyone, I went to the doctor today....
they only did an ultrasound on me to see if i have PCOS. She didn't do bloodwork on me because she said I was "too heavy" to find the vein. I have never been told that by any doctors.
Second of all, she told me that eating 1600-1800 calories is too high and its keeping me maintained. She told me to eat 1000-1200 calories a day and then burn 500 a day. That means, my net calorie intake would be 500-700 a day. Is this healthy? I feel scared to do this at all. I mean, I thought eating 1600 would be good because I would then lose 500 calories in working out so my net calorie would be 1100 and that would help me lose fat. But she said because I have so much excess fat, I need to eat less.
She told me if I feel sick, to take aspirin and just keep drinking water. I am so confused on what to do. I feel jipped cause my bloodwork wasn't done. Their ultrasound machine wasn't even working properly. I feel her information was just wrong. I'm nervous. I probably eat too many carbs (i measure everything to fit at least 1750), but its all veggies and fruits. My breakfasts are sometimes really big because I like to feel full for 5 hours at work. I have tweaked everything and will keep tweaking (trial and error process) but I am not sure about this 1000-1200 calories a day....is this something I should do?0 -

Are you taking a rest day each week (a day of no exercise)? Your body needs time to recover. I do C25K 3 days a week (T/Th/Sat); M/W/F is a few minutes on the elliptical to warm up, followed by the New Rules of Lifting for Women workout. Sunday is a rest day (maybe a casual bike ride with my kids, but not anything intensive). You might want to try making sure you have a rest day in there somewhere.0

Definitely find a new doctor! I've never had a doctor say they can't find a vein due to overweight (geez, they find them on those 800 pound people on tv, so surely they can find yours at 260!). You also have to push for what you need. Did you go to an OB/GYN or a GP? If this was your OB/GYN, find a new one! Push for bloodwork. Not everyone with PCOS actually has cysts on their ovaries, so that is not a definitive test. Bloodwork needs to be done so they can look at testosterone levels (that's the biggest culprit!).
You are the best advocate you have for your health, so don't be afraid to push for the tests you think you need to have. The doctor you have sounds like a jerk who didn't want to be bothered...find a new one! Ask around. You may also want to do a google search on PCOS. There is a lot of info out there, and there are forums available. Join up and look for people in your area and ask them what doctor they use. I went years before mine was diagnosed; when I finally had the right doctor, she figured it out with just a few simple questions--bloodwork was just to confirm her diagnosis.

Are you eating 6 small meals a day?
If your eating enough in the am to last 5 hours...your metabolizm must be effected.
Bkfst I have 2 hard boiled eggs and a coffee with half and half
Mid morning small oatmeal with raisins and cinnomin (cinnomin helps break down sugars)
Lunch Turkey Chili with beans about a cup and a half
After noon snack, fruits, veggies...
Dinner with either wheat carbs or none. Usually just meat and veggies.
This is a basic template of what I eat, I do switch it up.0 -
I am the same way, so obsessed with food that I have been told I have an "eating disorder". Maybe so, but regardless, when I am unhappy with how much I weigh, then yeah...who wouldn't be obsessed? I am finally getting to the stage where I realize that there has to be a balance. I still eat the same foods day after day becaused I know that they will fill me up and keep me under my calorie goal, but I think that it might be wise to change it up. Somedays, try taking in more calories, it keeps your body from going into starvation mode and slowing down your metabolism. Fasting helps too...if you can. Another thing you can try is have a day or atleast 2 meals where you don't eat any meat. These are just ideas that I have found help me. Hang in there!!0

Maybe your Calorie goal for each day is off... 1800 seems a bit high. I weigh 242 and my calorie goal (set to lose 2lbs a week) is 1390 calories . Eat the daily amount it says then when you exercise try to eat them back. I rarely ate them ALL back, just because I think MFP over estimated what I burned and it worked for me... some weeks were slow some were better. I find changing up your menu/exercise routine helps. You don't want your body to get too use to any routine- thats how you hit a plateau.
I think you need to work your way down to 1200 a day... Not automatically start eating that amount. MFP is pretty good normally at adjusting your intake depending on your weightloss. But that's just my opinion. I think you'd be best fit seeing a specialist in weight loss or nutrition.0 -
Hi - I've been on this journey for a couple years and have lost 191lbs. I was 378. First, you are doing awesome. You are focused and consistent and that is more than 1/2 the battle. Next, everyone one is different so finding your right mix is the key. You are frustrated and have been trying so many things that you are at your end.
I do not eat all my excercise calories back, never have and never will. I have always eaten in a calorie range from day one. When I was over 300 I was eating in a range of 1500-1800 and working out twice a day(almost all cardio but I've added strength in the last 6 months). When I got below about 270, I adjusted my calorie range down to 1200-1500. This is where I am today and I've had consistent weight loss (slower but consistent). I also upped my protein intake big time. I try and eat in a 40-30-30 ratio (40% good carbs like fruits, veggies, whole grains, 30% protein and 30% fat). I don't hit this all the time but I try and I do still have some of the "not so good" carbs, just in moderation. With all your workingout, you need to keep the protein up as it is key for building lean muscle and burning fat.
The range helps as I don't "go over and feel guilty" if I miss a hard and fast number. I wouldn't go as low as 1000 but 1200-1400 would be a good adjustment range to start.
I also take Sunday's off from working out and logging food. I still "watch" what I eat but I need a day to be relaxed and let my mind rest along with my body.

I'm horrified by this. I don't know where you live but please keep in mind that most GP's get very little training on diet and nutrition in medical school. Please go see someone who knows what they are talking about. Get a referral to a nutritionist or pay for one.0 -

You paid enough attention to post a reply quoting out of context. I said I aim for about 700Kcal/day NOT COUNTING RAW FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND NUTS. Maybe you should read things in their entirety before posting your uninformed opinion. Are you paying attention now? Stop taking the things I say out of context. I don't do that to you.0 -
OK I work for and endocrinologist. And subsequently i have PCOS. I also see the endocrinologist i work for as a patient... I am currently taking metformin to help regulate my PCOS. I had tried the HCG diet before i saw my doctor for the first time, and so when i told him i had been eating 500 calories or so he said more power to me if i can keep my calories in that range , but not to bother with the HCG drops because stomach acid actually burns up the hormone. The only way to actually get HCG into your system is to get physician administered injection (which my doctor doesn't do). He told me that basically for my size I'm 5'3" and at my heaviest was 205 (now 197.6) i should eat about 1000 calories a day and exercise regularly in order to lose weight. So after seeing my doctor, and he did a hugely comprehensive fasting blood panel to confirm my diagnosis, i started on metformin and began attempting to eat better but not religiously. SO after a few months my metformin wasn't working properly, so my dosing needed to be adjusted, due to my hormone imbalances i had the insatiable hunger and so i began packing on the pounds, it was aweful almost as if i was some insane pregnant woman with hormone swings and all. So my doctor prescribed me phentermine (and appetite suppressant) and increased my metformin to 750mg now i'm all on track and officially dieting. I hope maybe my experience has helped you in understanding how it typically goes with an endocrinologist and PCOS. Let me know if you have any questions i can always take them to work with me0

ALso BTW the ultrasound is not necessarily a conclusive test for PCOS, it just shows cysts. I have PCOS and i haven't had a cyst in 5 years, and my friend doesn' have PCOS and she has recurring cysts so um... yeah. I would definitely see another doctor.0

Even if you aren't losing weight as quickly as you'd like, do you realize what amazing things you are doing for your heart?! Actually, your general health. Your body is loving you right now. You're decreasing chances of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, etc, etc, etc. You are improving the quality and length of your life. Congrats to you for doing such amazing things! The number on the scale can be upsetting sometimes but just remember that every workout is helping you.0

Thanks guys. I'm going to see another doctor next week along with an allergist. I been eating close to 1600 past two weeks with exercise but think I will lower it and just play with for a couple of weeks and see what happens. I will be seeing my trainer tomorrow and she will help me figure out what to do. Apparently, I have a lot of access fat calories that I need to burn and the food I am eating now is just supporting it and not really helping me lose weight. This is a struggle and really breaking me down. I have never been so stressed before. But, I'm not giving up.0
