I enjoy my job quite a bit.

But, a word of advice -- I would NEVER post on a public forum something that could have a negative impact on my entire life. Not a wise move.

I don't hate my job - I just hate the stress.

    OK, so GET ANOTHER JOB!

Come on folks; just siting around sniveling about a problem does nothing.
If you are unhappy in your current position, get out!
Make a transition plan today that will reasonably move you into something you are more suited for.

A good vocation must engage your passions as well as your skills. And can the difference in what you may lack be made up through training, additional education or experience? Don't just curse the darkness; do something about it.

    Do that TODAY!
    Take action TODAY!

Again, moaning and crying does nothing, and misery may love company, but your misery in your job is optional.
Success and happiness is a choice.

    Make the right choice today.

    Read the OP's post properly.

But, but, that would require some sense of intelligence, to read and comprehend something before replying.
  • I have been working for a big fortune 100 company as an Actuary for four years now. I hate the job. It makes me feel miserable 40 hours a week.
I know if I stay longer at this job , I will have a stroke or become very stressed and depressed.
Some of you might wonder why , I just don't go somewhere else. Well, I am working in the US with a worker's visa. Transferring to another company is not impossible but it is a very complicated process. I might eventually be able to leave but I am not sure when.
I run into different kind of people everyday who hate their job as well.
If you have the opportunity to leave , do so. It's not worth it to stay at a job you hate.
We spend tremenduous amount of time at work , I think one will live longer if you enjoy what u do.

    That's all.

Do you like being an actuary at all? Or is it the company? I only ask because I love math, and thought about taking the exam at some point.

Oh yeah it's great. The exam are tough . A good website for you is www.beanactuary.com or www.soa.org

I love people who think getting a new job is just as simple as saying it. If that was the case, my fiance and I wouldn't be homeless. He's got an interview at Taco Bell tomorrow and I couldn't be happier after six months of unemployment.

I work a three jobs at my school and also at Burger King. It might surprise others, but I love my jobs. I love the people I work with.
  • I've worked in some bad environments and I can totally understand.

I have up and down days at my job. I am not paid enough for my background and experience but that's another story.

In any case, if you have to remain there, try doing something different. It might sound silly, but try taking a different route to your office in the morning, or try a new flavor of coffee, or taking a break at a different time and taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Is there a chance to meet new people in your company, or outside of work in some type of actuarial professional group, try to join that. Maybe if you focus on other activities, work won't feel so terrible.

I read somewhere that having fun in a social environment has a positive effect for 3 or 4 days, so if you do things you enjoy outside of work, it can lift your mood.

One final note, are you on LinkedIn? If not, join, or if you are, try connecting with people that way, professionally. Make connections now and think about what type of environment you would like to work in, then start meeting and talking to people. Once you put it out there, it paves the way once you are free to leave the company.

Yes I have been doing a lot of networking through linkedln. I am having more interviews as a result. Thanks for the advice, though

LOL I hope my post didnt come across as not understanding. I totally get where the OP is coming from - kinda stuck at the moment. But in all honesty for people that aren't stuck persay.. chances are a change of scenery is required.. which is do know is a harder task that it seems I had over 400 resumes out and got 4 calls on them.

My job isn't as bad as my coworkers. Well, one coworker in particular. She literally works 3ft from me and she's crazy. I mean really, for real CRAZY. Like, she thinks that people come in at night and hack her computer and snoop around her desk. Oh, did I mention, OUR OFFICE IS LOCKED AT NIGHT??? And nothing ever happens to MY desk, so she's just too crazy to see that if someone was really doing stuff like that, it would be happening to me too!!! For the past couple of months, she's been carrying around her purse with her, b/c she thinks someone moved a paper in it! What?!?! Then she went around and told people it was ME! Not to pull the race card, but this is a really small town, with a really small mind and I am like 1 of 7 out out 240 of minorities that work there. It doesn't look good to call me a thief. Like, Really???? And here is the worst part. My boss actually caters to her crazy, nutty whims! Example: My boss agreed to ruin a $10K fire proof filing cabinet by having them install a pad lock on it b/c she thinks that people are "going through" her stuff! This woman makes it hard for me to get up for work in the morning!

Accounting sucks, I have been doing it for 11 years now, working in Big 4 and industry, ugh, I wish I had learned a technical trade. The offsets are job stability and decent money but it's definitely stressful and not fulfilling.

Agree...accounting sucks!!! If I could quit I definitely would, but my littles depend on my paycheck.

Going to be the putz here and say I absolutely love my job and accounting. I been doing it for 10 years now at one of Fortune's 100 best companies to work for. My boss is the best .

The great thing it's just me and him in the office and basically don't have to deal with anyone else except when we go to events or conferences.

    I see two solutions:

    1. Leave your job and take the huge risk of not finding another one. Remember that the grass always looks greener on the other side, but sometimes, it's just a big patch of brown. No guarantees the new job will be any better (if you can get one).

    2. Suck it up and deal with it. Be thankful you HAVE a job because so many people do not. Find good hobbies to occupy your time that you can look forward to. Be proactive and positive as much as possible. You can look for another position while you are still employed and give yourself the time you need to find one that is actually better.

I, Sir, happen to like moaning and crying! Hence keeping the job I hate! Thank you very much!

Right, because there are so many different jobs out there. My sister who is college educated had to resort to retail due to this economy and she is a very bright and highly intelligent..

I think i'll keep my job and just complain than live off the government money.

I absolutely HATE my job, but I love the fact that I get paid to do almost nothing for 40 hours a week except answer phone calls from his wife and girlfriend! I work for a "semi-retired" 64 yr old attorney who spends most of his office time (and evening) with his 29 yr old herion user prostitute girlfriend (not being mean, she's self proclaimed user and prostitute) girlfriend who lives right next door to his office in one of his apartments. Let's just say, it's not boring..........
Not that seems like an interesting job!!

I enjoy my job most of the time, but get irritated when I have to deal with too many stupid people/situations at once LOL. I make okay money, enough to pay our bills, but the hours are exhausting (530 pm til 2 am). But alas, hubby and I do opposite shifts so that one of us is always home for the kids and we don't have to shell out a big chunk of change for daycare. It's tiresome, but it has to be done. My fulltime plus OT job, PLUS serious couponing PLUS being a SAHM during the day is like having 3 jobs anyway!

I don't have an H1b visa issue, but in my career, I'm always looking for the next big thing. I typically end up finding my latest adventure long before I ever have time to hate my current job. I recommend other people avoid complacency, even in this job market. After all, the best way to get a raise it to LEAVE (sad but true). But even so, you don't have to leave your company. You could always be on the lookout for internal opportunities as well.

None of this, I realize, helps the OP...but maybe it's some food for though for other posters
