Contact your senators and representatives about this please if you haven't already. If you don't already know about it, then just look it up. Tons of stories out there.

    I contacted mine yesterday. I noticed that despite all the publicity, not one had any information about the bills on their websites. I get the sense they are working for the lobbyists and hoping their constituents won't notice.

    I was surprised to see even all the fairly liberal senators are supporting this, which saddens me. I'm contacting them all today, Democrat and Republican alike, letting them know that a vote for these bills are a vote against them in the election, by me.

    Just to urge everyone to help out... a site like MFP might have to shut down (or potentially become a paid service) if the legislation passes. MFP would be on the hook for everything WE as users post that could be construed as intellectual property theft. It would be impossible for MFP to be continuously policing the forums and making sure that this doesn't happen.

    The major reason this bill has any support is because big companies who's movie and music sales are declining and dumping millions into these senators pockets. All they see is dollar signs and they seem to think this will force people to buy movies instead of downloading. They don't seem to understand that in the long run this will really screw them.

    Politicians can get away with it. How often do we REALLY hold politicians accountable? Rarely. Everyone gets all up in arms, but tend to forget when we go to vote.

    Part of the support was due to the influence (read: $$) of lobbying groups. A big one is the Motion Picture Association of America. There were also just appeals to common morals that theft is wrong. Saying 'Piracy is bad. This bill stops piracy' was enough to get support in some cases. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like they actually read the bills. Or perhaps the familiarity with web technology is so limited that they couldn't foresee the consequences.

    The funny thing is, both sides pretty much agree that piracy is bad.

    A list of the supporters/opposers of SOPA. May not be up to date with some of today's retractions of co-sponsors. One my own state senators, Marco Rubio, retracted his co-sponsorship. I may not agree with him on much of anything, but at least he's listening.

    Also, please watch out for H.R.1981, the Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011 in the future in the House of Representatives! This bill could easily have much of the language from SOPA snuck into it, and with a title like that, it's easy for people to be okay with it passing.

    Keep this going. If you don't know your reps info, go to Wikipedia. You can enter your zip code and they will have all the contact for your local/federal reps. I said it in another thread. These are the same people who are doing a bang up job with the post office. Do we really want them running the internet?

    Writing is absolutely worthless. If you really want them to get the message, calling is the most effective way of doing that. It's very easy to throw out a letter or delete an email. Calling, however, forces them to pay attention. Yes, you'll likely be speaking to an intern, but they definitely pass the message on if their whole day is spent taking calls on SOPA.
