Go to most European countries, and you won't be able to find most artificial sweeteners. Why? Because they've done studies that show most artificial sweeteners pickle your stomach with formaldehyde, which IS a poison.0

I personally try to avoid artificial sweeteners. I'm skeptical about how good they really are for you, and some reports have indicated they may inhibit weight loss.
More than anything though, I avoid them because I need to train my body to stop expecting overly sugary things. I try to reach for natural sugars now, rather than processed ones (including regular white sugar.) If I want something sweet, I grab a piece of fruit, and if I want to sweeten something I prefer to use honey or agave syrup. Agave syrup especially is great because it's minimally processed and is mostly fructose.0 -
I like brown sugar or organic honey just my personal preference.0

Dr. Oz did a segment and mentioned "coconut palm sugar" Supposed to be lower on the glycemic scale and you use it in the same proportion as regular sugar. Check his website, probably, for more details.0

I'm so naturally sweet I just usually use my **** to stir stuff.0

I use, CSR Smart - a blend of natural cane sugar with a pinch of stevia, and I like the taste, also you only need half as much.0

I LOVE stevia! I put a dash in my oatmeal and tea each morning It's wonderful0

Whatever you like is what's best.0

It depends on what I'm needing the sweetener for. When I bake, I use either molasses, honey, or raw sugar. I bake my own bread, so that's usually only a couple of tablespoons. When I'm adding sweetener to my coffee, I use Stevia that I get from Puritan's Pride (ingredients are stevia and fiber - nothing else, unlike some others). I'm getting ready to experiment with Xylitol to see if it's as great as the rest of the world says it is.
Since I stopped using Splenda and Equal, I have lost weight without trying and if I grab a diet drink or something sweetened with Splenda, my bowels revolt. I never had that problem when I was using the two sweeteners heavily, only since I stopped using them.

is that the same as stevia ?
*shrugs* ...
i dont use sugar in my tea anymore..

Go to a restaurant and sample all 3 or 4 or whatever they have on the table. lol Then pick the one you like the best. I prefer Splenda myself and there is no aftertaste unless you are eating it with something that has sugar in it! My opinion anyway.
I'd rather use sugar but I want the extra calories for 'food'. There is no way I'm going to waste 170 calories on a beverage when I can sweeten it with ZERO calories!
Do what works for you.0 -
Look into IDEAL NO CALORIE SWEETENER. It is made from Xylitol. It has absolutely no aftertaste. It is cheaper than Truvia and Sweet & Low. It measures the same as sugar. It is NOT and artificial sweetener. I have been using it for a couple of years...coffee, iced tea, cooking, everything. If you email them, they will send you free samples. Nothing to lose...but calories!

Splenda is POISON stay away at all costs! Stevia is choice number one, then agave nectar, then honey then sugar (organic and the like).
Artificial sugars always make me hungry and they are poison for your body.
Rant over.
Agave nectar contains NO H.F.C.S. whatsoever.

Made identically to HFCS..
Everyone likes what they like, I personally wouldn't put that in my body if I want a sweetener 'like sugar' I'll use sugar in moderation.0 -

People ASSUME, incorrectly, that the weight gain is due to people grabbing a candy bar since their soda was only 1 calorie. Not true. Read the entire article.
I read it. Old study done with rats; and they only used one particular artificial sweetener - saccharine. Recent studies done with humans do not show those same results for sucralose and aspartame.0 -

Anything that starts with "artificial" doesn't sound appealing to me. I stick with agave nectar or raw sugar. I barely use any of them anyhow, but I worry about the impact of something that's not natural going into my body.0

Honestly, if you've ever smelled formaldehyde, just the thought of that possibility would make you sick to your stomach. That smell is burned into my brain. Eck.
Kinda like my aunt telling me all hot dogs were cased in intestines. It was years till I ate one again, and then only skinless and charred on the grill.0 -

Umm. Wrong. Your insides won't get pickled from artificial sweeteners. Small amounts of methanol and formaldehyde are produced in the process of digesting many things, including fruits.0 -
But seriously sweeteners of any kind should be such a small part of your daily diet anyway that it matters very little if its pure sugar, sucralose, or crystal meth.
Ok, maybe that last one would matter a bit. Go with what you like and keep the amounts sane.
Never had or will try crystal meth but didn't realize it was sweet.0 -
splenda and sweetnlow are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar and trick your brain which leaves some people to feel hungier. It has that affect on me. It's really better to use sugar or stevia. I use stevia in smoothies if I think they need sweetening. Not sure how it'd work in baking, it's too expensive for me to use it that way right now but I guess honestly I don't bake anything.0

I'm just learning,so please don't flame me.0 -
I'll use sugar minimally, because of the empty calories, but I'm not going to abstain from using it. Some things just taste better with sugar.
I have a bottle of stevia extract that I use often to sweeten tea or seltzer water with lemon or lime juice. Bought it at Whole Foods for $20 and has lasted me 10 months and counting. Just 4-5 drops for a cup of tea, says that there is over 1800 servings in a bottle. Just for the convenience, I like it but not exactly sweet like sugar. Also use a few drops when I want sweeten up spaghetti sauce or a curry.
I've got honey, agave nectar, and maple syrup around the house for cooking and things like pancakes. Those I use as a flavor preference. When I drink "diet" drinks I look for those with Stevia or Sucralose because they taste better than those sweetened by aspartame or saccharine. I haven't had Xylitol or the other sugar alcohols so can't comment on those.0 -
I hate the taste of splenda and I always feel like it's a "too good to be true" thing, in that it sounds great to have a sweetener with no calories, but it's still going in your body, you just don't know what all it does. So I just use sugar (or maple syrup), but less of it. I'm more comfortable with that and it tastes better anyway.0
