  • You could start pounding down some brusslesprouts....I also might recommend a little more fruit and grain to possibly help ease the flow. A grapefruit juice could help possibly, but its hit and miss.

    Because of how long this has been going on, and all of your other failed attempts I HIGHLY suggest going to your doctor.

    Without being able to view your food diary it is hard to say if you are eating things that contribute to it. You may want to talk with your doctor because I'd imagine you don't want to take these meds long term.

    Are you getting enough fiber? Too much?

    Coffee always gets me going! =)

    That being said, this only started when you changed your diet? Using stool softeners repeatedly makes you only need to use them more... Wondering how your fruit/vege intake is?

    Try psyllium husks - I put it in applesauce but also at times put it in a smoothie. Can't taste it and it will help you when you need it.

    As a non-doctor's opinion, I would stop taking the stool softeners and really packing in the veggies and fruits, then go and see your doctor. I can't see your food diary, so I don't know what kinds of foods you're eating but just make sure to eat as much natural fiber as you can and exercise like crazy. I would recommend a hearty serving of lentil soup - really any bean soup, and that should get you going. Failing that, drinking hot water with lemon has worked for me in the past.

    32 ounces of water and 2 teaspoons of sea salt or kosher salt, no table salt. Make sure you have about 2 or three hours where you have nowhere to go. It will clean the pipes!

    I increased my fiber and changed to all whole grains in my diet. Lots of veggies! I was sick of taking pills.

    I double the recommended fiber on MFP and I have for the last 3 weeks.....for the last 2 weeks I have gone everyday 2-3 per day! I feel great...

    Try benefiber in your food and water!

    If not...go see a Dr....

    Since it has been going on so long, I also suggest seeing a doctor. In the meantime, a run ALWAYS helps me clear the pipes.

    Ground flaxseed, psyllium husk, caffeine. Sometimes mix one with the caffeine.

    Usually helps :)

    Hot coffee, warm lemon water or prunes. Swear by them. Or a ton of apple juice but your gonna pay in calories.

    Coffee (keeps me ridiculously regular) and fiber (quinoa, beans, broccoli, barley, etc)! However, I notice that when I lose weight, I don't poop very often. Probably every other day. My friend in med school thinks it's because my body is absorbing most everything I eat (it's mostly healthy and very little junk) so I don't have anything left to poop! However, since it's been so long, checking in with your doctor is probably a good choice.

    I agree with others - a visit to the doctor would be most appropriate. MFP advise is NOT medical advise - and could potentially be (inadvertently) harmful.
  • Healthier diet, exercise and coffee has helped me and my severe AND inherited issues! ;)
  • OMG me too
    thanks goodness i thought i was alone!!!
  • My nursing interventions for patients that can't have a BM are;

    get them walking/moving
    high fibre diet + water+++++++++++
    privacy in the bathroom
    Prune juice, warmed
    Herbal teas
    stool softener (colace) or Sennosides (senokot)

    Personally though, coffee gets me moving in NO TIME. :):)

    I find that on days where I have a salad for a meal as well as a bunch of raw veggies as a snack, and a couple of pieces of fruit, I am EXTREMELY able to go to the bathroom! I second the suggestion of psyllium husks, and prunes also help, if you don't mind the taste. If increasing your fiber intake doesn't help, definitely go to the doctor - using stool softeners becomes "addictive" to the point where you can't go without them.

    The more you use laxatives, the more your body gets used to them. Drinking water alone doesn't help bring water down to your lower intestine. That's the role of fiber. Incorporate a bit more fiber in your diet and see what happens because that's going to be the very first thing your doctor tells you. And if you tell him/her you already tried that then you get a second visit out of the way.

    Most of the fiber supplements you buy in the stores (except Metamucil) are soluble fiber - those are actually bulk-forming and can constipate you. If you're using a lot of stool softeners/laxatives, your body can become reliant on those to have a BM.

    If you are eating a lot of protein, or taking supplements with a lot of calcium or iron, that can also cause constipation.
    Do you eat enough fruits and vegetables? Do you eat whole grains or refined grains? How much water are you drinking? How much are you exercising?

    I feel like more than half of my job is talking about how to stop being constipated
