Biggest Pet Peeve

My biggest pet peeve with dieting is when people eat their exercise calories back with horrible foods.
Actually scratch that, my biggest pet peeve with dieting is the entire Weight Watcher's program. Everyone in my office is doing it, and just replacing meals with whatever is low in points - regardless of it's nutritional value.
With exercise, my biggest pet peeve is people who use a machine for like 30 minutes straight at the gym.0 -
People who insist that powders are the only way to lose weight. What do you do after you've lost your weight? Keep drinking powdered mixes? It's all about lifestyle and learning how to eat correctly, not replacing real food with powdered 'stuff', pills, magic potions, energy bars, etc. Oprah is a good example with her Slim Fast diet she was on.
I don't mean people who eat extra protein after heavy workouts. I understand that 1. It's the whole idea of replacing a meal/meals with a powder that I don't get.0 -
People that are too focused on calorie counting. There is a limit... You do not need one of those damn scales..
AND YOU DON'T NEED TO WEIGHT YOURSELF EVERY DAY.0 -
everyone asks me what did I do to lose the weight and the answer is simple, change my diet and incorporate exercise, when I give them that answer its like they wish I said I had a magic pill!0

Well today my pet peeve is work out buddies that ditch. I was supposed to try a Piloxing class tonight with one of the only people i know who care about fitness, and she forgot to bring her workout stuff. this will make the second time this has happened. We were gonna be brave and take this class after our zumba workout, which i was a little nervous about anyway. i still may give it a try, i will need to see how I feel after Zumba.0

Can I just say AMEN!!!!!0 -
Those stupid "toning" shoes. You can't eat crap, wear the stupid freaking shoes and think your going to lose 20 pounds-- They are just SHOES!!!
Also I'm short and fairly petite, so people who say things like "your so tiny, you don't need to lose weight" or "you only weight 90-100 pounds" When actually I can lose a few pounds and still be healthy, and I do weigh more than a hundred pounds!0 -
What are your biggest pet peeves when it comes to diet/exercise?
Mine is "don't worry, muscle weighs more than fat."
Generally this will go as follows:
Friend 1: Help! I have gained 3 lbs this week. I don't understand.
Friend 2: (trying to make you feel better) "Don't worry. Muscle weighs more than fat. Its probably all muscle.".
No. Nope. Nu-uh. Sorry. ..well maybe..yeah..No. It is not muscle...and even if it were muscle the scale wouldn't reflect it.
1) A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. A pound is a pound. However, muscle is leaner than fat. So if you really did, miraculously and against all logic, exchange 3 lbs of fat for 3 lbs of muscle you would look leaner. But it would not reflect on the scale.
2) It is basically impossible to gain 3 lbs of muscle in a week! You can maybe, maybe gain 15-20 lbs of muscle a year. "According to the Colgan Institute of Nutritional Sciences (located in San Diego, CA) run by Dr Michael Colgan PHD, a leading sport nutritionist explains that in his extensive experience, the most muscle gain he or any of his colleagues have recorded over a year was 18 1/4 lbs." (excerpt from an article on bodybuilding.com - but other sources would concur with this.) So basically if you lift hard, work hard and are very dedicated, you could possibly gain 1-1.5 lbs of muscle a month. But that is probably not the case.
So that 3, 4 or 5 lb gain you are seeing on the scale this week is not all muscle. Sorry. This really just drives me crazy. It takes all the self-control in the world to not retort with this response every time I read "muscle weighs more than fat, don't worry." but I really don't want to be one of "those" people. So I will just vent here instead
So yeah, what are your pet peeves?
THIS ^ I hate when someone asks why they've gained X amount of pounds in X amount of weeks and everyone's always like oh, you're lifting 5 pound weights, so you must have put on 7 pounds of muscle in 3 weeks...I want to slap foreheads every time...argh!0 -
3. "I just can't lose weight." ..... Yes you can. You haven't tried hard enough! Everyone can lose weight with a little will power!
BTW.... I haven't lost any lately cause I'm Pregnant, and I'm not currently trying to lose weight. BUT when my baby gets here, I AM going to lose all the weight that I gain!
Technically I can't lose weight because of a severe hormonal imbalance, not because of a lack of willpower, but thanks for rubbing it in:drinker: One of my pet peeves "willpower is all you need!" you also need a body that is functioning properly
Things that are my pet peeves:
1. People thinking I only exercise to lose weight, I do it because I feel awesome afterwords.
2. Those who underestimate us fatties in races. I've tailed a few people who've tried to keep up with me.
3. The assumption that the same diet or exercise is what's best for everyone... do what works for you!0 -
*when people tell me "You don't need to lose weight" when I tell them 'I am watching what I eat' -F*** off and don't tell me what to do!
*when certain 'friends' say "all that stuff about GMOs, HFCs, etc, (or whatever) in BS...they wouldn't keep selling it if it was bad for you" -well I want to 'eat clean' and just because you are a RN doesn't mean that you are also a nutritionist, RD or are any kind of 'expert'...look at how fat your kid is!0 -

Didn't mean to rub it in.... I have a hormone imbalance as well... I'm pregnant... Isn't that an imbalance?
Just because you have an imbalance doesn't meant YOU CAN"T it means it's harder to lose.0 -

No, being pregnant isn't an imbalance LOL It's a temporary state. And no, I CAN'T lose until we figure out how to rebalance everything. Still in the process. It's just one of my pet peeves because I exercise and I eat right and the scale hasn't moved in a year. I lose just to gain back within a day. It's frustrating.0 -
Oh, and skinny women who always say things like 'I feel so fat' all the time.....when they are probably at the low end of their BMI range, if not below.
That shouldn't be a pet peeve. People with low self-esteem shouldn't be dismissed like that, whether they're skinny or fat! Maybe they have a little to lose, in which case, they may feel fat, and if they don't have any to lose, maybe they should be encouraged to realise that. Just a thought.

That is frustrating! I do apologize! I understand what you are going through..... I'm sorry for being rude. Is this rare? I've never heard of such a severe hormonal imbalance! Goodness, I'm sorry!0 -
My pet peeve is you pick up a maz that has something about losing weight and the next subject is this fat dang cake recipe. Hold on I was just reading about lossing now they show me cake and pies and cookies. Can't they get one good maz that is not such a flip to one or the other.0

You're fine I'm just being pissy:flowerforyou: I had a total hysterectomy about two years ago, I didn't go on estrogen therapy right away and it's sent my adrenal glands into overdrive which in turn has started to mess with my kidneys. It's a mess and my endochrinologist isn't exactly sure what's going on. What we do know is I need estrogen what we don't know is how badly things are messed up. I go in again next week to see if the estrogen therapy is helping.0 -
The word DIET when used for a temporary change in eating habits. It is about a life long commitment to health by eating right and exercising.0
-
My pet peeve is that it doesn't matter what size I end up I'll still be out of proportion for high street shops. Got slim before & it makes no difference, if a dress fits my top half it's lIke a tent on my waist & hips & if it fits my hips it won't do up over my bust, yes I know, wear separates but it's a pain in the *kitten* that I can't just walk into a shop choose my size & buy a dress or even a button up top & it fits properly.
The answer... Take up sewing, specialist shops for well endowed ladies ( for crying out loud) or surgery.
Bloody hell this really is p***ing me off!!!!
Thanks for letting me vent ...!0 -
"Is it OK to eat 800 calories a day? I am really struggling to eat more than that."
Riiiiight...

Hahahaha. I love this one.0 -
Thank you everyone for sharing! I needed a great laugh today. I have just one more to add!
People telling me it should be easy for me to loose weigh for reasons A,B, or C. If it were easy I wouldn't have been at least 40'pounds over weaight my whole life. And I sure the he'll wouldn't be watching Tony Horton tell me to bri g it or be the calm with in the storm six nights a week. So yes because I am singel and a horse trainer, who runs hr own business and has to scedule work out time it must be very easy for me. Lol0 -

Haha. But didn't you know it is easy? All you have to do is go on a liquid diet, take this magic pill, only drink powder and/or water with pepper, lemon and green tea! You don't even have to exercise in fact. Oh did I mention these pills/liquid/powder drinks will cause the fat to melt right off and you will drop 40 pounds in less than a month! WOW! Lets all sign up
I think being a horse trainer would be awesome. I always wanted a horse but Santa never brought me one You are living every girls dream0 -
is people who tell me I don't need to lose weight, that it's perfectly normal for a middle aged man to have a paunch, and I'm going to kill my knees and hips with all that running (while they're guzzling down beer, pizza and haven't walked more than a block in 20 years)0

The people that are "on the diet" but not willing to exercise or watch what they eat. Then you just hear them complain on how they are gaing weight. Think about it. If you don't make a change in your life you will not be able to make a change in your body.0

This! The people who complain that they can't lose weight no matter how hard they try while eating 2000 calorie meal. Or they ask you what you are doing and when you respond "exercising and eating right" they say oh i can't do that because of _____.0 -

I think people get mixed up that 1 pound of muscle is denser than 1 pound of fat. I asked a friend the same, how is 1 pound of fat weigh more than 1 pound of muscle, she says it just does. I said, so its denser than fat that is why...yes that is what I meant....Ugh!0 -

Oh yes I am sure this is what most of the people mean...which is why I don't go out of my way to correct this statement every single time I see it. I hope most people know what is actually meant by the statement. But there are many out there that actually believe that 1 pound of muscle actually weighs more than 1 lb of fat because this is so commonly misstated.0 -
When people start lecturing and saying others are stupid for perfectly valid diet choices. I don't subscribe to any particular plan, but instead just learned through trial and error what would be healthy for me; the result ended up pretty similar to paleo. I'm also very short and don't always eat more than 1200 calories.
But I swear, people who love all the popular diets and conventional wisdom/tips/tricks will rabidly jump all over anything remotely resembling that, like a diet without pasta and Wonder Bread is some sort of horrific and fatal decision masterminded by Satan himself. Look, I get that you have your own view on this, but you're not going to convince me that eating whole, nutritious foods is worse for me than the crap I was eating before. Seriously, quit taking it personally; it has nothing to do with you.0 -
My pet peeve is how my metabolism is a lazy bum... lol.
Another is how people aim to lose weight in such a short amount of time with supplements, starving themselves and no exercise.
Amen! I have been there done that as well. My co worker and MIL are both on the Ideal Protein diet (not putting it down) and they cannot exercise at certain parts of the plan, my co worker can now do some cardio but no strength. They tell me first, because the scale wont move and the plan guarantees a certain number lost each week and exercise can slow this number down (for so many of us want to see the numbers not the inches, GUILTY here) and another time I was told that including exercise would cause the muscle to eat itself due to the type of diet ( I care less to even know the mechanics as well). But when they commint on my loss (scale doesnt show large numbers but inches do and I am firming up....) I am being lectured about how I should go on this diet and the numbers will fall faster. Umm ya and the weight will come back faster and restricting me from most foods for months at a time, nope!!! It works for them, I am happy, but it wont for me, been there done that with other diets, this is a lifestyle change, why cant some see that...:huh:0
