So..... We have to redo the basement because it flooded a year ago. We are at the part where we are going to start painting and..........

I think we should paint the walls first and then paint the floor.

My reasons:
* If you paint the wall it will drip
* Clean up on the floor won't matter as much
* Sometimes there is unseen splatter from rolling

He thinks we should paint the floor first.

His reasons:
* It will be easier to wipe up

If there are any other reasons I don't know because that seems to be the only one he keeps giving me. Am I in the wrong? I want answers! Why do we have such a silly debate and why does it bother me soooooo much! Help I want to see which seems more practical. Thanks :indifferent:

You're right. Walls first, trying NOT to drip, then floor.

    Cuz I said so.

I'd paint the walls first, as well. It isn't easier to wipe up drips, spatters and spills if you don't catch them before they dry. You will be less likely to spatter the walls when painting the floor than vice versa.

I agree with you on doing the walls first! It will make the cleanup / cover up process a LOT easier.

    Walls first.

I'm confused by your husband's argument...as I'm usually confused by MY husbands. LOL

Well if the paint on the floor is going to be epoxy, then it takes much longer to cure and dry and if after you painted the walls there was drip, it wouldn't be hard to clean up.
Floors are harder to prep than walls, so that may be his thinking. You're constantly sweeping dirt and debris off floors, where you aren't on walls.
Either way a DROP cloth pretty much solves either issue.

I can tell you this much...professional painters would paint the walls first. Messes are less of a worry, and if you paint the floor last you can paint yourself out of the room and not have to walk on it again until you're ready for furniture.

I hate to go against the man code, but I'm siding with you! Walls first, then floor. LOL

Just let your husband win by allowing him to paint the floor. The respect itself will reward him. If the paint drops, let him do all the cleaning up. (Try not to say "I TOLD YOU SO") Have fun!

Walls first because of the drip factor.

Always work from the top down, the paint on the floor will need to cure for at least a week before you walk on it anyway so best to do that last.

flip a coin, it doesn't really matter as long as it all gets painted properly.

Walls first because as they dry, you can paint the floor.

That's how I did our basement when I was 14...
