Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. In order: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. I only see Subtraction, Multiplication, and Addition. First do the multiplying, then the adding, then the subtracting.

wtf i don't remember this =| this is why im a social science student

    OMG what a tard I am....hahha It would be 9-5=4 Then 5x0=0 then add 3 soo 4+0+3= 7

PEMDAS is the order of operations. parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

so, you do the multiplication first 5x0=0

    that makes the problem 9-5+3.

when you get to addition and subtraction you work the problem left to right, 9-5 = 4. then 4+3 = 7.

IF you chose to do addition first, you need to be sure to take the symbol in front of the number with it, thus making the problem 9+ (-5) + 3 which, is still 7.

it's not 0 because the whole equation isn't multiplied by 0, only 5.

    it's not 1, because when you do the addition first, it's not 5+3, it's -5+3 which is -2, and 9 + (-2) is 7.

it's not 3, because you don't do the problem left to right, you have to do the multiplication first.

answers of 9 and 12 kind of confuse me

and answers of 7 make me happy. :)

    But "maths" should be "math."

    Thanks for asking!

It's actually called "maths" in Great Britain. I thought it was weird at first too.

Former math teacher here. It's 7.

I just sat with a bunch of 4th graders and taught math today, please tell me I am right when I say 3, then I saw the correct answer and I know why I am nt returning to teaching next year LOL
  • Once you multiply the 5 by 0 dont forget that two plus signs equal a negative. (I THINK.)

Without looking at anyone else's answers, I applied PEMDAS for:

    9 - 5 + 5 x 0 + 3 = ....?

    9 - 5 + 0 + 3 =

    4 + 3 = 7

    So, my answer is 7.

That said, I ****ing hate math. Ask me to spell or define just about any word and we're golden, though.

Now, back to the thread to check how I did!

I hope you weren't teaching them orders of operations....

    close, subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive 1 - (-1) = 1 + 1

    7. The people prioritizing subtraction over addition or vice versa forget that they have the same priority haha. Same as multiplication and division.

I'm not even going to pretend I know. I have dyscalculia., so math is just about impossible for me to learn, even the easy-peasy stuff.

Me too. I finally learned a few simple formulas to pass my basic algebra class in order to get my degree, but I hated every second of it and I don't remember a bit of it. I'd even forgotten Dear Aunt Sally until I read this thread.
