A lot of these replies seem really negative.
I wouldn't just do it with out talking to a professional and really looking into it but there are lots of legit types of fasts done for different reasons. It's not as simple as just saying 'don't do it' or 'it's so unhealthy'

I am a professional. I say dont do it. problem solved.

Oh please! Fasting for 1-3 days is not bad for you. Long term of course it is. OP how about you do your own research on google instead of asking a bunch of know -it -alls on a forum.
  • I just finished my first attempt at the Master Cleanse which isn't as rediculous as a water cleanse, though very close to it. I won't explain it all, look it up. I only made it three days, but this is what I will say about it. It is extremely beneficial for cleansing toxins out of your body, and I could tell it was working in that respect, but the weight I lost came right back as soon as I caved to eating again. As far as losing weight, it is NOT the answer however as far as cleansing your system, it has many benefits and I am excited to try it again this summer when I can cleanse for a longer period of time. One of the signs the cleanse is working is a white, fuzzy tongue. I did develop this on my last day, and you are supposed to go really until your tongue turns pink again. This could be much longer than the original 10 days. Some people take up to four weeks to get their tongue pink again! No it's not a good option for weightloss, but it can be beneficial for other purposes. I say don't knock the Master Cleanse until you try it!

    What exactly is your profession?
I'm nor suggesting to do it but surely people can respect that there are reasons and circumstances in which to consider it?

Ive heard of some people water fasting.
i was just wondering if that would be a bad idea?
like some people gain weight back that theyve lost but some dont.
and wouldnt it be good to like, clean your body out? 0.o
    lol
Let's see: no protein or fats just water. Protein and fats are ESSENTIAL to healthy living and living period. Uh no.

fasting for medical diagnostic testing is the only valid physical reason to subject your body to the effects of fasting. fasting for spiritual and/or religous reasons is a personal choice that has nothing to do with weight loss which seems to be the OP's original reason. fasting to "detox" or "cleanse" the body of toxins is total nonsense. The body's liver and kidneys function best when fed and the liver and kidneys are all the detoxing we need.

I wouldnt say it's for everyone but I do know a selection of people who do it regularly, are all extremely healthy and swear by it!!

I fast regularly for the mental benefits of it...really helps with mental clarity, etc. I'd never do it to lose weight.

Cleanses are scams. There is NO SCIENTIFIC evidence that shows that doing them "detoxifies" you any better than just eating better and making sure you're getting sufficient water in your system.

If your looking to a less disputed way to start to cleanse and detoxify your body, look into seeing a lymphatic drainage specialist. It can also aid your weighloss journey.

I plan on doing a 24 hour fast tomorrow. I actually feel good affter i complete one, and seem to have less cravings than before the fast. But I don't use it necessarily for weight loss.

How do you know they are healthy??? Because they look it??? I'll betcha their labwork would be all screwed up. Low sodium levels, low potassium levels, and various other things. Low potassium can cause irregular heart rythms, something looking at them isn't going to reveal. Other deficencies in electrolytes can cause any variety of health issues that may not show up till it's too later

People who fast regularly actually have lower rates of diabetes and heart disease according to several recent studies

Yep. If you want to find out how fasting and drinking only water affects the body, why don't you read about the 1981 Irish hunger strikes. Organ failure, blindness, and death are the most common side effects.

I am sorry, but these types of fasts really annoy me. About 5 years ago I suffered from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm which had me in intensive care for 17 days (no permanent damage luckily). Before it, I was very healthy, low body fat, no blood sugar or cholesterol issues. While I was in ICU I was concious but was given fluids through an IV. For most of this stay, I did not eat at all and when I did it was mainly clear fluids with small amounts of solid food in the later part of my stay. During my time in ICU I had tests coming out of the wazoo (sp?). They had to give me lipitor for cholesterol and insulin. I came out of hospital, after only 17 days, being so weak I could hardly walk (and just before I could leg press more than 3x my body weight). It took me many many months to get my metabolism regulated. That is what an extended fast does. Why would someone want to put them through that voluntarily I ask you. After that, I think I can knock this Master Cleanse.

And...isn't a fuzzy tongue an indication of thrush? Nice!

I don't really know what a master cleanse is or if it's exactly like a fast. But I know alot of people who fast regularly (primarily for religious reasons )and none of them have had problems and they seem to have normal metabolisms. Although I wouldn't advocate it as a weight loss method

I thought of oral thrush too! yuck! I had oral thrush with my second pregnancy and it was miserable- my doctor told me that it's a sign of a compromised immune system...so yeah, I'm not so sure that this cleanse sounds like the healthiest path

Yes - but how long do they fast for? These posters are talking about people doing weeks of fasting.

Usually a day at a time sometimes a few. I have gone up to four.

I am not a 'fan' of fasting at all (can't you tell!!) but I do not think folks are saying a day or two is actually dangerous (although I do not think it is necessary or particularly good - just my opinion, it seems to work for you) - the issue is with the comments about folks being on it for weeks. There are many cases of people on hunger strikes (see prior poster re 1981 Irish Hunger Strike) where people died after 40 - 50 days of just drinking water.

i don't believe that fasting long periods of time purely for weight loss is the thing to do, but there is plenty of research touting the health benefits of 24 hour fasts. so although i believe a healthy diet and exercise is the way to lose weight, fasting can be a healthy part of your lifestyle. People who use extreme weight loss measures will probably not learn and develop the habits needed to keep the weight off

I am 61 years old and I have water and/or juice fasted periodically since I was 19. By periodically, I mean sometimes I might go five years or so between fasts. The longest I was on a water fast was 7 days and that was only twice.

i actually find the boredom to be the worst part of a fast, not the hunger. Its amazing how much of a day has to do with eating, you take that out and there is a lot of extra time.
