    German chocolate cake did not originate in Germany but is in fact named after a man, Sam German, who developed a brand of dark baking chocolate that was named after him. It was orignally called German's Chocolate Cake but the possessive form was dropped in the mid 20th century and it became known as German chocolate.

    I only know this because I wondered how in the world a tropical fruit came to be in a European dessert.
