Ladies - what do you wear to the gym?

I am day dreaming about the day I will be able to start going to the gym... and so I am browsing sports clothes. That made me think - what do you think is the best attire for an intense session at the gym, what do you normally wear? Are there and do's and don’ts one should be aware of?

I typically wear compression shorts and a form fitting tank top. I like my gym clothes to be form fitting as to not catch them on any of the machines.

    But typically anything goes

I used to wear one of my husbands shirts and a pair of workout pants. I don't advise jeans, but have seen people work out in them. Seems like it'd chafe? I don't like my body so I hide it under as much baggy attire as I can get away with. When I was running and at a comfortable weight and I was a bit more confident and comfortable with my body I wore the tight running pants and a fitted running shirt. I didn't go to the gym then

Now I am a mom and I don't have the time for the gym so I wear one of my husbands t-shirts and a pair of work out capri's and do 30DS in my living room before the little one wakes up.
  • Usually yoga pants or I actually wear black tights, the ones that go down to my calves and a tank top. Usually the tights on cardio days.

A pair of my boyfriend's old shorts and a bigger t-shirt. I don't give a damn what I look like, I'm just there to get all red and sweaty anyway :)

This. I also love the tanks and boyfriend shirts from Victoria's Secret to pair with my leggings/yoga pants. I look like a fat load but at least I am comfortable.

Yoga pants or sweatpants and a reasonably tight-fitting shirt (it bothers me if a loose shirt is flapping around when I am exercising).

Yoga pants (Victoria's Secret are my favorite) and tank tops or these long v-neck tees that I found at Target. They're fitted, super soft and comfy. They're thin, so I wear a tank under them too.

Shorts and a tank if it's hot. Pants (sweats/track pants/semi-fitted sport trousers) and a tee if it's cooler.

I can't afford to shell out for things, most 5Ks give you a free tee for showing up, so those get a lot of use before they go to the rag bag. You can pick up tanks pretty cheaply at old navy when they go on sale. For shorts/pants, I watch for sales, trawl the second hand shops and places that sell seconds like TJMaxx and Gabriel Brothers. Currently Champion's website has all bottoms on sale (sports bras too).

Same here, I can't go to the gym ATM due to working full time and having a little one at home. Hopefully when she starts full time kindergarten I can find some time for the gym! I have the 30d shred dvd but no opportunity to work out at home at all - my daughter won't let me when awake and would woke up if I did it when she is asleep :(

Thank you all for the repplies... I think I like the yoga pants and a tank top idea the most :)

It depends on how I feel...

If I feel like I am having a skinny day ( or the scale says I lost weight) or I just think damn my body looks good... Shorts, sports bra fitted clothes - If I feel ok, nothing great, leggings, tank. If I feel fat, or it is TOM or I am upset loose shorts, and a tee shirt.

I wear mostly Yoga pants and recently I actually started wearing shorts! Go me! But I wear Yoga pants and a tank top or spaghetti strap shirt. Or I would do Yoga pants with a short sleeve shirt or shorts with a long sleeve shirt.

i used to wear a baggy tee and pants, because i didnt want anything snug due to all my chub. I have learned for me it is much more comfy to wear compression pants that arent riding up my but or rolling down like the looser pants did, and i also like a snug tank, as i do cardio kickboxing and such and even with pushups my tee shirt feels in the way.

I'm in the same thing errrryday. Yoga pants + fitted yoga tank. Easy movement, and no extra fabric flapping around.

    My favorite leggings:

    yoga pants and t-shirt.
  • I go early in the mornings (5 am) so I wear yoga pants and a hoodie most of the time. If it's warm, I wear a t-shirt instead of the hoodie. The 5 am crowd at my gym usually consists of a 60-ish year old man in his denim overalls and boots (usually busting it on the treadmill!) and a couple of bleary-eyed 40 something women like me...so it's not an audience I need to put on a show for at any length. LOL!!!

Yoga pants and a wife-beater-- nice workout pants can be pricy but the tanks come in 5 packs for ten bucks so I figure it balances out

And when I work out at home, undies! :D

Nike Dri-Fit shorts and a tshirt from various events/shirts I have to support my brother's athletics on NON-spinning days.

Spin days...Yoga capris and a tshirt.

    Always a tank top underneath.

I usually wear gym shorts (the longer ones) or sweat pants becaus shorts rise up sometimes. I wear a regular t-shirt that fits, nothing too baggy because when you get sweaty it'll stick to you and stuff. I've worn yoga pants before, but I have too much thighs and butt and don't like feeling uncomfortable. Also, I've worn leggings under my sweats and that helps everything stay tight when you're working out.

My typical gym outfit is usually a good sports bra (I have this favorite Nike one I wear probably too often, I'll be so sad when I have to retire it!), an Under Armor or Nike sleeveless top (the dry-fit kind that wicks moisture away from the body), and either Nike running shorts (I have a million pairs because of all the pretty colors) or some Nike or Under Armor running leggings (again, the moisture wicking kind). And I never wear underwear. People think "eww gross!" But if you're wearing the right exercise clothing, underwear is pointless and can actually cause infection. The Nike running shorts have a built in panty that has the same effect as the dry fit clothing, and the tights have a reinforced crotch area and the same moisture wicking technology. Soooo much more hygenic than sitting around in soaking wet cotton panties!

I also alternate my shoes, running or HIIT days I have on my good Brooks running shoes, and then the days I'm doing some kind of crosstraining or just weight lifting, I have a pair of Nike Lunarglides that I love. OH and good socks. Thorlos are my favorite.

I'm one of those annoying matchy-matchy girls in the gym. Whatever, I like cute workout clothes, they make me feel good, and I work my BUTT off :) Sometimes, if I'm just doing lifting, I'll wear a race t-shirt or some other random t-shirt I've got with my running shorts. Yoga days it's Lululemon yoga pants and a tank top/sports bra.

Once I get to the official halfway mark in my weight loss, I'm rewarding myself with a couple nice new Lululemon outfits, and then when I'm at goal weight, a few more lululemon outfits :) They're expensive but great quality and SO CUTE.

Yoga pants and a tank. If I am running on the treadmill I will wear a shirt around my waist.

Personally....I try to look as un-cute as possible because I am literally the only chick in the weight room most of the time and sometimes I feel like a porkchop in one of those cartoons with the bulldogs......I'm not saying I'm hot or anything like that but those weirdos stare and it makes me feel uncomfortable. I am very curvy so I wear two sports bras, a baggy t-shirt and yoga pants or sweats.....plus a retainer, coke bottle glasses and a baseball hat....LOL!
