Detox and cleanses

    Thnks for sharing the diary.

So your caloric intake looks fine most days in my opinion. Play with your nutrient intake a bit (I am a pure meat loving carnivore and I am experimenting with most eating vegetarian except for fish). Try some new stuff though, whole grains like quinoa are awesome (complete protein), good fiber, carbs, filling etc.

Now, I think your honesty is badass with logging it all but chill on the beer (this is coming from someone who can drink like a fish). That is your one and true only detox you can probably do for yourself, but I saw much of that was only this past week anyway. Drink even more water.

Try new things with your carb and protein intake and I think you may see a difference. Take in more protein, it won't hurt you even if it says you are over what you should have). Complex carbs are the way to go, quinoa, steel cut oats, sweet potatoes, strawberries, cracked wheat, almonds etc. You will feel better because those are very nutrient dense items to eat.

You look healthy, so experiment with your diet but keep it fun.

Now a note, I mention the alcohol intake but I am someone who doesn't dig "cheat days", but that is for me. I enjoy a good drink though so maybe try things like vodka, enjoy sipping straight whiskey etc? If you want to get your drink on it's a good way to go. All things in moderation etc.

Thanks for the advice! My drinking over the last week or so has been out of control; it's that whole feeling like I'm not getting anywhere, so I said F it and went overboard.

I know that feeling, hey I was proud of myself for not going bonkers over holidays and spring. My stress comes from a high stress job and I have a well stocked bar at home.

So enjoy the beers (seriously, hope you did, life is meant to be enjoyed). But lets play experiment.

I noticed you live in Ft Worth so close to the same haunt. Explore some different options at Costco, they sell much of what I buy.

Black bean burgers are surprisingly awesome, they sell those there.

Quinoa quinoa quinoa, more flavorful than brown rice and much healthier (if you haven't noticed I love it).

Costco sells North Dallas Honey Co stuff in this area, which if you like honey in the mornings is awesome. Raw honey has a much better nutritional profile than basic processed stuff (and can also help a bit with allergies via basic immunitherapy).

They sell an "antioxident blend" of fruit in the frozen section that is awesome for home made smoothies. I'm a berry slut so I love this stuff, though I've been on a fresh strawberry kick lately.

If you like sushi, try sashimi, especially tuna and salmon (good fats, protein heavy, no getting filled on rice)

Grats on losing what you have lost so far (seriously, much badassery there), ignore the cleanse nonsense and keep at it!

    No, seriously.

Toxin cleansing is a biological function of your liver and kidneys. You cannot supercharge this, you cannot force it. If you drink a bunch of acai juice, guess what, your kidneys still have to work just as hard as if you drank nothing but water. There are foods that keep these organs healthy yes, and contribute to general wellness, but to tell people to buy into cleanses is misleading and unkind.

Did you not read my response there that explained that cleansing as it is generally marketed is snake oil?

Eat healthy, you won't have toxins to "cleanse".

Actually, I think Chris1816 was spot on. Completely right, you cannot defy bloody science. It just doesn't work that way. I'm not sure what you meant by you had an X-ray and MRI and they were both negative, they're not really positive or negative tests, and not only that, but they only tell part of the story. Not everything shows up on them, they are designed to be tools in the box of medical science. Used in conjunction with medical knowledge, and medical precedence, one can then make an informed and sound judgment.

Cleanses are bunk, period. You can argue till the cows come home against that, but in the end, it's like faith healing. The body is capable of doing so much, and sometimes the placebo effect is extraordinary great.

    Which toxins do you mean?

Why in the world don't people understand the human body already has a "toxin cleansing system?" what do you think your fecal matter and urine is?

Costco and Central Market are my best friends! I eat a lot of fish, and chicken so bulk is great from Costco. I did have unprocessed honey from McKinney for awhile, but burned through that. I like the floral taste in raw honey. I did however just buy the kirkland's brand. I've never tried quinoa, but would like to. The show Chopped has me a bit scared of it though. The judges always complain about people under cooking it, and I seriously just figured out how to not under cook rice!

Now with sashimi, I will eat salmon, but texture wise it's hard for me to rock the others. I'm a sucker for rice!

I'm feeling better about not trying another cleanse at this point; I've seen some helpful advice, and I'm getting my confidence back.

SORRY IF THIS IS A REPOST - I accidentally left the page in the middle of my response.

CHRIS - There have been so many responses to this topic that I actually made that response BEFORE reading on to all of your posts. I NOW have decided NOT to do a body cleanse.

Right now I am enjoying a Chicken, Spinach, and Raw Vegetable Salad with a Tall Glass of Water :)

I also give MAJOR PROPS to the creator of this Topic who shared her diet with us....I could not have done that!

Ok, as someone who breastfed four kids, I have to ask. How old was your baby when you stopped? You were probably burning up around 500 cals per day if they were exclusively breastfed and even an 1 yo will eat around that much since they eat more at a sitting than an infant.

So my question is, when you stopped breast feeding, did you drop your cal intake down by 500 per day? If you were eating around 2000 before, (and losing weight) you need to be eating around 1500 right now to keep that weight loss up.

Or, you could increase your exercise by another 200 and decrease your cals by 300. You get the idea.

Also, do you actually NEED to lose more? Or is this a case of you need to reshape your body with HIIT cardio and weights, so you burn fat, and keep some muscle, all while not really seeing the scale move?

I'd consider myself healthy. I eat a balanced diet, work out daily, play tennis singles competitively once a week, work a physical job part time, and take care of my 10 month old child full time. I'd say I'm happy for the most part too; I am human, and do get down sometimes, but would not consider myself unhappy.

I've tried zig zagging calories within a reasonable amount of my BMR, which is 1480; tried increasing the weight I'm utilizing in strength training; tried working out at different and multiple times a day; increased my fiber intake; increased water consumption from 8 glasses to 12. I feel like I've tried it all, but this plateau won't give!

A cleanse has been my last resort in hopes to help boost my metabolism, but like said before I don't feel like the one I did had much affect.

Plateaus are *kitten*. I think the best way to get over one is with patience. Its really easy to think the answer is to do something drastic, but in reality all you need is more time.

Do you know how long I need to maintain patience? Come May 2nd, its 2 months of patience, and I'm running thin on it. Is 2 months of a plateau normal?

I know its a pain. All i can suggest is to evaluate your energy intake and expenditure to be sure you arent incorrectly estimating something, and be sure the deficit is appropriate for you.

I used to be a Weight Watcher and one time I was on a plateau that lasted nearly 7 months. I stayed with it and once I broke through started to lose regualarly again. Now I did keep measuring my body and seen losses there and my clothing size went down. But was losing patience quickly when I started to lose again.

You should look into Matcha Tea! I copied and pasted this from the website I order from!

Please read the various articles provided to learn more about the health benefits including…
    • Matcha tea is approximately 10X stronger than regular brewed green tea, and so it has extremely powerful therapeutic effects on the body.

    • Matcha contains over 70 times the anti-oxidants of fresh orange juice, and over 9 times the beta carotene of spinach.

    • Matcha also contains high amounts of L-Theanines—a unique set of natural amino acids found almost exclusively in Matcha, known to reduce stress and anxiety, heightens the concentration to help provide increased mental clarity and focus.

    • With virtually zero calories, this makes Matcha the ultimate "energy drink"—without any of the side effects found in the highly sugared, over-caffeinated beverages sold in stores today.

    • When drinking Matcha or enjoying a food or beverage made from Matcha - you consume the entire tea leaf. Matcha drinkers receive the full nutrition benefits of the whole tea leaf and will enjoy the high concentration of green tea antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fiber.

I LOVE it. Check it out and think it over, I have made changes to my diet and been exercising more so although I won't give it full credit for my weight loss thus far I definitely think it has been playing a part! :)

    Sweet christ.

Yes green tea is good for you, and has lots of antioxidents etc, but as you said you likely benefited from the diet and exercise change.

To note, all teas are awesome as caffeine is a stimulent and appetite supressent.

If you are a tea person though, don't buy expensive as matcha green tea from some fad diet reseller.

Go to a small asian grocery, probabably around Royal/Harry Hines, and buy some green tea.

Also, drop by a Michocana or other hispanic market. Yerba Mate (mate cocido is the teabag form) is even better than green tea health and stimulant wise, and dirt cheap there, as its local faire...not some wonder drug from a magical brown people land.

    (Yes I am brown)

Ya know, as much as you may want to continue losing, it may be your body saying that it's where it needs to be right now, and it's time to switch to something like body fat % to measure success, rather than pounds.

If you are healthy, active, and eating well, and healthy tricks haven't gotten you losing again, it's probably time to stop trying to lose.

If you really think that your metabolism is moving slowly, ask your doctor for a fasting/fed thyroid analysis.

Re-evaluation is necessary sometimes. I got down to 437 then had a free day on Easter, gained back 8, and now I'm stuck at 442 again. Not saying we can directly compare to each other, but there are definitely worse places to be :P

Your diet to me looks like too much alcohol and processed food. few if any veggies for the last few days. When I switched my diet to veggies first, then fruit, then nuts & seeds and grains and put animal products and oils last and cut out sugar and sodium my weight loss was significantly easier. Although don't judge me by this past birthday week or you will see waaaay too much sugar and some alcohol in the past two days, too! Typically I get 50 - 80 gms of fiber in my diet and I eat little processed food or restaurant food. It has helped me to blast off the last 7 of my 10 pounds. Made losing those last 7 of the 10 easier than the first 10! And yes, I choose to eat like this now. It isn't temporary!
    Best of luck!

She was 8.5 months. I wanted to continue, but she wasn't demanding it. I added 300-500 calories to my diet for breastfeeding. So that's what I cut when I stopped.

According to the BMI, I'm considered overweight. I know I shouldn't be my current size, and don't feel comfortable also.
  • So you think you need to poo? Go to health store, by some CALM. It's magnesium...it tends to relax you & help with poo. Want a skin clense? Google a detox bath & follow directions. It's relaxing...but be ready to sweat. If you aren't "regular" a good few poo's can pull you off a "plateau". Being backed up causes all sorts of problems from insomnia to bloating & water retention.

Isn't that what your liver, kidneys and bowels are for? They get rid of waste that your body doesn't need. Any other type of 'detox' is a hoax and you're wasting your time, money and energy. Laxatives (ick) do the same thing, they remove feces... just like your body does but faster.
Just focus on eating healthy food and exercising. It's not that hard once you get used to it. Good luck!

p.s. To the OP. I plateaued for over a year. Yes. OVER A YEAR. I kept at it and I'm back losing...and my body was definitely not telling me I was where I needed to be. Don't give up.

When you do stuff like that, you upset your body's natural cleansing capabilities. It's just like when you take antibiotics for an infection. You can kill off ALL the bacteria in your body then get a yeast infection because there are GOOD bacteria in your body that you need and shouldn't be killing off. When you "cleanse" your body (which is probably just fine and not foul in any way), you disrupt the balance in your intestines and the same sort of thing can happen. Eating healthy does not make your body dirty, so why cleanse it? If you are constipated just use a stool softener, don't kill everything in there.

It's amazing how marketers can make a person buy anything. Just suggest that a person is fat which makes them unattractive, dirty and offensive in some way, undesirable, etc., and they shell out the cash like they have money to burn. They are all scams, but are legal. They can lie and make ridiculous claims and make BILLIONS of bucks off of needy, insecure people. QUIT GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY!!
