I'm going on a trip to Vegas in a week for my 30th birthday! Although I'm super excited and I LOVE to travel. I absolutely HATE to fly...I'm terrified. Anyone else scared to fly? Better yet, anyone else want to give me some encouraging words?

I too hate flying -- but -- I still do it.

Its kind of one of those "suck it up, Buttercup" things -- I just ask myself -- "What? Are you going to let fear stop you from seeing the world and living life? That's worse than letting fat stop me!?"

    Good luck!

If you can, go see your doctor and tell him about it.

I take an anti-anxiety drug for it, and it's been truly life-changing. I have to fly quite a bit, and that little pill is truly magic.

(I don't condone random drug use. . .but it's stressful enough to travel.):flowerforyou:

No worries, pet. Flying is one of the safest forms of travel. I'm sure, statistically, in this day and age you're probably more likely to get hit by a drunk driver.

Well have to say don't like it myself.

However I've been in the Travel Industry for over 28 years and am a child of an Ex- Airline employee and have been flying since I was six months old.

Air Travel is probably one of the safest modes of transportation - so have a stiff drink sit back and relax and enjoy you trip to Vegas
  • I too am afraid to fly (even though I have been on nearly 30 flights).

I take Gelsemium and Ignatia (you can go to your local holistic / health food store and ask the pharmacist there for these two). One is for anxiety with flying, and one of for claustrophia. I do find they help. I take a dose the night before, then the morning of, and then as I get on the plane. They HONESTLY do help!

    Good luck!

SO I AM AN AIRLINE EMPLOYEE AND I HATE TO FLY GO FIGURE, I LOVE IT WHEN I GET WHERE EVER IT IS I AM GOING, BUT THE FLIGHT ITSELF IS NOT MY FAVORITE, i FIND THOUGH THAT WHEN I TRAVEL I TAKE A CD PLAYER OR DVD TO TAKE MY MIND OFF OF WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND ME, AND IF THE TURBULENCE GETS BAD I CLOSE MY EYES AND THINK OF A BUMPY ROAD IT USUALLY RELAXES ME, IMAGE YOU HAVE THE PILOT THAT MADE THE SAFE LANDING IN NEW YORK'S HUDSON RIVER IN YOUR COCKPIT HE KNOWS HOW TO FLY A PLANE ENJOY YOUR TRIP TO VEGAS AND WIN LOTS OF MONEY

Couple of tips to make you feel a bit better... make sure you bring some gum! It will help with the pressure changes as you change altitudes.

Secondly bring something to distract you like a mp3 player. (I like to play music that relaxes me when we take off) If you get sick in cars and on boats you might get air sick too. I like to take some anti motion sickness medication just in case so I am more relaxed and not sick when flying.

Third RELAX! More people get hurt in cars then in planes. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing. Also its a good idea to check the weather the day you are leaving and the place you are arriving so you can bring what you need on the plane.

Its the taking off and the landing that are the hardest parts... it only lasts a few minutes and then its not too bad!

There's nothing to be afraid of, really. It's safer than driving to Vegas, and a lot faster! I hate flying, but not because I'm scared, just because it's so damn uncomfortable. First class must be awesome though.

Have a good time in Vegas.

Pretend you are sitting on a bus. It feels no different. You are just as cramped.

Flew first class to and from Hawaii. Got an amazing deal on the tickets. First class was nothing like flying coach. They served you a 3 course meal free adult drinks  and brought you warm moist towels after take off and before landing to freshen up. Also they had a bathroom just for first class customers. Oh plus the seats had leg rests and seat recliners. Felt like flying in a lazyboy the whole way!

    FIRST CLASS ROCKS! :flowerforyou:

Oh as someone who flies kind of alot the best airlines are Virgin America and Jet blue if you are flying coach or business. Jet blue gives you the option of buying more leg room lol! Virgin has wifi on a lot of their flights and the seats are not as bad as american or united. They are a bit wider and more comfortable. Happy Jetting!

I just flew to Vegas in June, it's great fun.

Flying is actually very safe. When you get that rush during take-off, think of it as a low risk thrill rather than a scared moment. Its like watching a scary movie - scary but nothing bad's gonna happen to you.

As Superman says, "Well I hope this experience hasn't put you off flying. Statistically speaking, its still the safest way to travel."

I read the whole post and so far no one has addressed the main reason I haven't flown since prior to 9/11 and will do my best to avoid doing in the future--the nosy. intrusive screenings--ncluding having to take your shoes off and possible partly undress if someone doesn't like your "looks", and the fact that I can't bring simple implements like a tweezer or a cuticle scissor with my on carry on, or a simple bottle of water.

If what they were doing actually promoted air safety, I would go along with it, but I have seen two recent documentaries where industry safety/security experts said most of what we are being subjected to is to promote the ILLUSION of security to ease the minds of the public, The checked baggage screening still doesn't prevent a really determined terrorist from doing something we would all rather not think about. That is only one small part of the shortcomings of the current system.

I don't know what the answer is to security concerns, but detaining and searching congressional representatives, as happened to one from Oregon last year, and making little old ladies take off their shoes, and refusing me the option of bringing a bottle of water on the plane, does NOT make me feel more secure!! If anything, it makes me wonder what threat will pass the screeners by while they are busy with folks who don't pose a threat.

You are absolutely correct about the intrusions. We shouldn't have to deal with it but since its not going away anytime soon (unless we all write our lawmakers the letters they deserve) here are tips to help:

    1. Search for a list of prohibited items beforehand so you don't have to guess. There is a TSA site.

    2. Bring an empty nalgene water bottle in your bag and fill it at the water fountain.

    3. Wear sandals or flip flops for ease, or socks and slip-on sneakers if you don't like people looking at your feet - you get to leave your socks on.

    4. I believe you can bring un-opened food items (please check) so pack your own snack don't let them price gouge you.

    5. Keep your ticket and license out and handy so you don't have to dig.

    6. If you have the nightmare of being "randomly" searched - they will flag American women to offset the number of their foreign male searches to not seem racist - be polite but remember you have a right to privacy and this usually just means someone taking you aside and shuffling through your stuff while they ask you questions about your travel.

    Jules,

Thank you for your tips. I am familiar w/ the "list" you refer to. And your other tips sound like you are an experienced air traveler. I have done my share of flying, but it would be much better, in my opinion, if takeoffs and landings could be eliminated!!

The strange thing is, I have flown on two different occasions in single engine aircraft and in a helicopter, and taking off and landing didn't bother me, but I DETEST takeoffs and landings on commerical jets. I can only figure that it is the noise and the G forces, since the jets go faster than non commercial craft.

I don't have any reason to fly anywhere for the foreseeable future, but I am going to mark this thread so I can refer to your comments later.

    Thank you.

Never fear flying , its such a safe and great thing to do..............crashing hurts.
If you do crash heres what to do ..... seperate your limbs very quickly and spread yourself over several square miles.
Only kidding.......planes rarely crash......well only once after which they dont work very well and its best to get a new one.

Don't wear bling jeans, you will get patted down every time. I have flown twice and hated it. I will be flying to vegas in april sans kids so I'm ready to embrace flying.

Not unless they have a ticket ! Its so annoying that all insects travel free and can easily upgrade to first class. I once knew a flea that travelled all the way to the U.K on a bikers moustashe. The flea previously resided in a very damp but warm place ..........
