Anyone eat Coconut Oil?

Ive heard that eating coconut oil is suppose to be healthy for you and has a lot of nutritional value, not sure this is correct and wanted to know you guys opinion. I think your suppose to eat like 3tbsp or something. Thanks :)

    I use it a lot to cook with. Anything that calls for oil or butter i use it. It is great for your skin. My trainer at CrossFit tells everyone at our gym to use it. It is supposed to be better for you that olive oil.

    I don't eat it straight, but I have been using it more often in my foods. I cook my eggs in coconut oil instead of butter every morning, and I top my popcorn (popped in the micro in a brown paper bag) coconut oil and a wee bit of butter. And sometimes I put a little in my hair - makes a great smoothing & shine treatment on dry hair! :smile:

    If you actually mean coconut water, it's excellent for you and very tasty. But if you mean oil, as you said, it is not at all good for you.

    Yep. I use in in my hair, but I also try to have about a tablespoon or so a day. It's great in oatmeal, Greek yogurt, protein shakes, etc.

    My friend eats a spoonful a day and swears by it. I'm actually stopping today after work to pick some up. She said just to make sure it is virgin, organic and unrefined.
  • Just scrambled some eggs in it :) I don't shoot for eating any specific amount, I just add some whenever I want to squeeze in some healthy fats and olive oil, etc. wouldn't be appropriate taste-wise. It's good for high-temperature cooking.

    I cook with it...use it in smoothies sometimes and I put it in my hair. I think coconut oil is good for you in moderation. I still prefer flax oil though.

    yes it is a medium chain saturated fat, its much better for you than other saturated fats

    I can't stand the taste of it, but I heard mention that if used topically enough you get essentially the same benefits. Personally I just use it on any discoloration on my skin from old scars and as a natural sunscreen. I don't cook anything that would warrant me using it instead of something else.

    Thanks guys. Ive been putting it on my skin & hair for a while now and was curious about eating but wasnt sure because it is an oil. I do have the virgin unrefined kind.

    This could not be more wrong.

    Get the Extra Virgin Coconut oil (organic is best), it smells and tastes delicious and is really good for you. Actually aids fat loss. I use it as makeup remover, sometimes in my hair and in the shower as a moisturizer for my body after I wash. Just don't use it on your face...oh boy.

    I also eat it, it is DELICIOUS in Quinoa, just 1/2 tbsp in 1 cup of quinoa. Haven't tried it on popcorn yet but I hear its good. It's good in a baked potato too... It's just GOOD!

    My husband recently made the best shrimp stir fry with coconut oil, a little soy sauce, and sesame seeds. Delicious!

    On the Paleo Diet it's recommended you use Coconut Oil. I would assume it's healthy for you because on this diet you're only supposed to consume healthy, natural things (no grains, no processed foods).

    The old "all fats are bad for you" is no longer true... coconut oil has been found to have many health benefits. Here is just one of my hundred of articles you can find...

    Coconut water is very good for you as well... but so is the oil.

    i use organic coconut oil daily in the place of olive oil or butter. I will say cooking with it that i has a lower smoking point than olive oil, so watch your heat when cooking with it. It is healthier than any other oil out right now...also great on my long hair and my hands. It has no smell and basically no flavor at all.

    cook with, yes :)

    in just about everything. it has a very high heat point, unlike olive oil for example. I also use it in baking gluten and grain free breads or muffins.

    The only things that I have done with it so far is to mix it with my oatmeal (with a little ground cinnamon and flax seed) and used it once when cooking onions & peppers on the stove. I'd love some other ideas of what to do with it, though.

    Moderation is the key word here. It's a saturated fat. But supposedly it's also good for you. I use it on my hair and it's great for the scalp. And I use it on my face once in a while. I apply it, leave it on for a couple of hours before my shower. Then I wash it all off in the shower. Seems to smooth my skin, maybe helps with flaking skin, etc.

    Moderation!

    Many things come and go and are the fad of the month, year, decade, but then they find out it wasn't so great after all. So, who knows? But I do consume it once in a while, not daily certainly.
  • My wife got me into using it for cooking. I also keep a jar in my bathroom to use on my hair. Just a little bit works nice. Anyways. Any time I oil a pan or anything like that I use it.

    Both my medical doctor and my Naturopathic Dr. have advised me to 'eat' at least 2 Tablespoons per day, and up to 3. It's a very good fat. They both said they cook with it, too. I have a hard time just swallowing a spoonful of oil so I was advised at the health food store to use it in any smoothie I make and on my body, like lotion. It's all I use now, for about a year, on my legs, arms, wherever I would've put lotion and it's wonderful, and my hubby loves the subtle scent I have when I've 'oiled' up. I even use it on my face after an evening shower. I wouldn't go in the sun with it, but other than that it's a perfect oil :glasses: . When we lived in the South Pacific, the islanders always had some coconut oil 'brewing' in the sun so they could use it as a moisturizer.

    There is a difference taste and texture wise between the expellor pressed and not. hard vs. soft, no flavor vs. coconut flavor. I have maybe half a tablespoon a day. The soft one is really tasty to dip strawberries in.

    I just used coconut oil instead of vegetable oil in my delicious homemade coconut cake. So good. I've heard many many other uses for it too, besides cooking!

    I use it on my son's skin. However, I don't cook with it. I have thought about it but the fat content is way too high for me. My container of Nutiva organic extra virgin coconut oil has 14 grams of fat per tablespoon (13 grams of saturated) and 130 calories. Not enough studies proving to me that it is a "good type" of saturated fat in my opinion.
