I have never been and have always thought to myself, "there is NO WAY my chunky, clumsy, uncoordinated self is going to Zumba". Well, there happens to be a class tomorrow at my gym... It's the only class on saturdays and I think I'm going to go!0
-
I went! there was only 3 people in the class since it was a saturday morning. I looked rediculous but it was okay and man, do you burn through the calories!0
-
Only 3? Wow. We have 15-40 per class. Small class but I bet you had fun! It is a great burn!0

Zumba was the first group exercise class I tried and it was great!! I completely lack coordination, but ZUmba is still fun. Definitely give it a shot. Every dance can be modified to suit your fitness level. Just introduce yourself to the instructor before class and let her know it is your first class.
As a general rule, people are very self-centered. So, no matter how goofy you look at the gym, other people are so focused on how goofy or great THEY look that they really don't even notice what you are doing.0 -
i tried zumba for like 3 weeks but to no results...
was i doing something wrong or is it the body's reaction??
Between do join zumba it's lots of fun... i have my friends who have joined it and have lost weight... I dnt know what my body wants..0 -

Omg!!! I'm starting zumba classes on Tuesday. I'm so nervous..don't know what to expect. Thanks for the details. Going (to attempt) to go 5 days a week.:embarassed:0

Great advise. I hope everyone is so into themselves..I won't be noticed...lol0

Didn't read everyone's answers. My suggestion is to search for a Zumba video on YouTube. I did that and followed along at home to test it out before going to a class. I then attended a class at my gym. I am not a fan of it. I didn't enjoy it as much as others do. I am sticking with kickboxing.0

Definitely go for it! It's so much fun and trust me, nobody will be staring at you!
You just get yourself a good spot where you can see the instructor and do your best.
Key is- Don't stop moving! Have a great time!0 -
Try dragging a friend along so you can laugh together when you mess up! That's what I do!0

Pretty much everyone looks ridiculous doing zumba. You don't need to be a good dancer to do zumba, you just need to keep moving. After a few classes you learn the moves pretty well too, and look a little more coordinated.
Honestly, sometimes you just have to push yourself out of your comfort zone to make progress. Think of it as a growing experience. Not only will you be exercise, which is good for you body, you'll be working towards getting more comfortable in your own skin, which is just as important as losing the weight (if not more so).0 -
Dont worry I danced for almost all my life and even I sometimes look crazy in zumba trying to get it together.. ITS FUN and EVERYONE is having a good time. If you cant do a move JUST KEEP DANCING0
-
I tried it after being mainly stationary for many, many years. Nearly killed me, the first class.
It gets better though. Drink a lot of water and stretch.
You should attempt almost anything (that may be good for you) once, just to see if you might like it, as long as you're physically okay to do so (doctor gives the green light.)
Good luck!

Yes...Love Zumba my advice is first time work in the middle....therefore you can try to grasp the fun steps...and you won't have everyone looking at you if you mess up on the first time just a little..but you will get it in no time and love it!0

Try it! It's so fun once you finally get into it. Yes, it'll probably be a bit embarrassing at first when you don't know the moves, but that 's completely normal. Just do your best & have fun Don't be afraid of messing up & if moves are too advanced for you or you feel uncomfortable with a move, modify it!
After a few times going, I finally warmed up to zumba & I'm so glad I started doing it:)0 -
Don't focus on anyone but yourself (well, and the instructor). LOL The most important thing is to just keep moving . . . even if you are just walking/marching in place until you can get back into the steps. Everyone has to start somewhere so just don't give up!
Best wishes :flowerforyou:0 -
Zumba is so much fun you forget your exercising. Try Zumba Gold if its offered in your area. Great for beginners and slower paced. If not go to the original zumba class. It takes about a month to learn some of the routines, A good instructor will continue with some of the favorites and change up a few so not boring & still a challenge for the ones who have been going awhile. Don't be afraid to ask for help after class or before the next class starts. Beginners ask me all the time, I was once new also wanting them to succeed also. Being up front helps you can see more and catch on easier. I watch the instructor only time I'm watching someone else is if I'm helping or counting so they can learn the routines. Check out Zumba toning using light weights and aqua zumba which is water aerobics. Zumba.com list classes by city & states. Try out different instructors until you find one you like. Prices varies also. If I pay by the month works out to 4.00 a class. If I drop in on a class it's 5.00. Not all places allow drop in so check first. Some charge up to 12.00 a class. Community colleges, churches, and fitness clubs are teaching zumba now. Check out zumbacommunity.com & zumba utube for free routines. or search zumba for instructors showing routines to get a feel for the steps. Classes you get to network with others. We laugh so hard I have come close to peeing my pants. There a few of us that are class clowns it lightens up the quiet classes and beginners relax . Have fun!! I have lost inches and my bum has lifted!0

YES!!!!!! I teach a similiar class and I burn approx 550 cals an hour! It has toned my body as I lost my 45lbs!!! It's wonderful!!!!0
-
Zumba is tons of fun!! No one is perfect the whole class through. Just keep moving and have fun with it! An hour long class goes by so fast and you burn a ton of calories.0
-
By the way if you do mess up we call that modifying many of us have injuries or medical issues so no one says anything . Instructor will tell you keep moving!0
-
YouTube has some videos that show the basic moves--so you could "practice" before going!0

Having read your question and quite a few of the responses, I have to say "Yes!!! Go for it!"
I had wanted to try Zumba for quite some time but lacked coordination. The gyms around me didn't have the class and I didn't want to drive that far and pay for the classes. I had a treadmill, some videos, and some weights at home so I was doing fine working out.
My friend found a gym about 2 miles from my house with really cheap drop-in rates for classes...I didn't have to join the gym to go to class. There went my excuses. My friend wanted to start working out, needed something fun, and wanted moral support. Now that all my excuses (except lacking coordination) were gone I couldn't say no especially since my friend wanted me to go. I quickly became addicted and have started going more frequently than she does! I absolutely love it. My coordination still isn't the best but I have fun and get a great workout each time I go.0 -
I love zumba - I do it 4 times a week... along with eating right... into my 2nd week.
don't worry if people are looking at you funny
noone is looking they are trying to get the moves too.
Win win situation... and I burned 500 calories in 1 hr... yay!!!

I would say go for it. Zumba is a very up beat dance/cardio workout and the moves can be tricky. Even for dancers like myself. The thing is to just give it a try. If your worried how others are going to look at you just get in the back of the class and and try your best. Don't give up if its hard at first, you'll get the hang of it, and you will feel better by the time the class is over. Zumba has a way of making you feel new.0

I go to Zumba! Or, I used to. My new gyms Zumba class seems too slowed down! But it's fun, and I had to get over the anxiety of moving in front of others! Everything is fun and fast paced and the people are delightful! Nothing to worry about!0
