It's too bad there are trainers out there who aren't really well educated. Gives us other ones a bad rap.

    Agreed. I don't envy you.

I use whey protein and I put it in coconut milk which ups the protein even more. I have been using it as a drink after I work out or as a meal replacement. After 3 months I am down 18 pounds. But even more important that what the scale says. I am down 7 inches in my waist. It's all about tracking your calories. Protein in important to build muscle.
I am by no means an expert! Far from it! Just working for me personally.

I recently started a medication that kills my appetite (clearly never a problem for me in the past!), and if I didn't rely on whey protein shakes I'd just get hardly any protein at all. I do well to get fruits & veggies, other protein sources are just too much for me to choke down a lot of the time now.

Oh yeah, and I've lost weight. What's really a shame is that some people will listen to him because he's "a trainer".

Whey protein is food. Like all food in the universe, it will make you gain fat if your intake exceeds your requirements.

Remember, personal trainers and group exercise instructors don't have much if any nutrition education. Next time, ask him where he got his degree in dietetics because I guarantee you he doesn't have one. People in all professions, personal trainers, doctors, nurses, etc. all need to take a good hard look at what they are doing and not step outside the scope of practice for their education.

Don't overdo it though. I always wonder when running a half-marathon, how the other participants can have time stuff themselves with all the bars, gels, etc they've stuck in their belts - when also taking an energy drink at every depot AND eathing a banana, apple, two chocolate bars, etc that are usually given at the finish line. I really believe that some of them are eating more calories than they are burning in such a race :-)

Keep in mind that a lot of marathon and half-marathon runners don't necessarily care if they are eating back all their marathon calories on race day - in fact that's the desired outcome. Most of them aren't in it to lose weight, and race day is not a day to deprive yourself of calories, it's a day to feed the machine so the machine can deliver.

This. I just ran my first (and probably last) half marathon, and had a half a bagel beforehand, gatorade/water, and another half a bagel when we were done. I'm pretty sure if I'd eaten everything they'd offered, I'd havetaken in more than I ran off!

Well said. Consumption of whey protein in itself won't make you gain, it's the calorie surplus that does it.

LMAO. that "personal trainer" has much to learn. You can tell him that this is me BEFORE at 232.2 lbs MArch3rd 2011, then AFTER on January 10th, 2012 42lbs lost, drinking WHEY protein EVERY SINGLE DAY. LOL.

This next set is from April 30th 2012 thru May 26th 2012 part of my current 90 day challenge.

That trainer was clearly trying to sell some crap product and doesn't really care about people. I am living proof that whey protein is a good thing and will not cause you to gain weight.

So what brand do you use? Thanks for sharing your story; I'm interested in trying anything to get my weight loss jump started.

    Thanks

I use whey protein the same as you (after a heavy workout) and I have not saw any gain from it. I have hit plateaus but definitely not gained anything back!

The trainer was feeling a little threatened by someone so informed...

I tried a protein mix one morning (was lucky to get a sample from GNC the night before) and I felt like I was going to hurl for about 4 hours afterwards.

Of course, I was at my desk job when I took it, but I felt so ill that I don't think any activity would have done me any good.

I will admit I don't have any protein drinks after doing my c25k runs or other lite strength movements (just starting out), but the glass of chocolate milk or peanut butter on an english muffin does taste pretty good.

That trainer sounds like an idiot!! I drink a Whey Protein shake EVERY MORNING with my breakfast, in part to help muscle recovery and also becasue it's a good way to make sure i reach my protein goal everyday (I can sometimes fall short). I lost over 60 pounds doing this every day. Shame on him for saying this to you in front of a bunch of people!

I wonder what he'd think of my shakes then: Not only do I drink 2 whey shakes a day (sometimes 3) I also add 1/2 cup of heavy cream (400 calories, 44g of fat) to also make them into a calorie-laden meal for me.

I've been drinking those same shakes for over 2 years now, had about 900 of them I'd estimate. And I lost well-over 100lbs in well-under a year while consuming them.

Whey does not make me gain.
I also think that was very unprofessional of him to speak to you that way at all never mind in front of a group!
