My First 5k Obstacle/Mud Run & 80lbs Lost – Lots of Pics

I DID IT!! I am beyond excited; so I thought I would share. I have always wanted to participate in a mud/obstacle 5k run but was always too heavy and out of shape. I lost 80lbs on MFP and did my first 5k mud obstacle run this weekend (I should of started with a normal 5k but oh well).

I finished 3rd in my heat, 2nd in my age group and 51st overall (about 500-600 runners total). I am just over the moon with excitement about my results. I was expecting to come in last place.

I also broke my foot in the last obstacle in the race; it was an 80 foot mud slide into a water/mud pit and a big rock (2 foot across) was at the bottom. The rock attacked my foot and now I have a hairline fracture but I finished running the race up a 100 yard hill with a broken foot...woot woot!!

I know you always say pics or it didn’t happen; so here you go!! If I can do this, anyone can do this!! I couldn’t run a minute straight when I started working out at 240lbs. Thanks for taking the time to celebrate with me and read my thread. I appreciate you!

Before the race, little did I know there was a huge rock hanging out in the bottom of that pit that would cause a hairline fracture in my foot…urgh!

After the race, I didn’t get a pic of me super muddy. I was power washed by the fire trucks before this pic. It was a blast but I was hurting a bunch.

    Awesome job on your weight loss. You look amazing. Congratulations to you on doing the mud run. What a way to take that on as your first challenge.
    Sorry to hear about your foot.. Oh ouch! Take it easy on that foot.

    Funny you mention that. I HATE my quads. They are big and my trouble spot. I posted not long ago about my bulky quads and got all the standard responses - you are a girl and can't have bulky anything, you are fat not bulky, you can't get bulky quads while eating at a deficit, blah blah.

    They are so wrong, I have bulky man quads and hate them. I guess I have to embrace them. You can see them really bad on the last pic where my leg is flexed because I am on my tippy toes, my shoes were muddy and nasty. Ugg I hate my quads but they are rock hard which is better than flab i guess.

    If I may offer a little advice you can "make" your legs look less bulky by evening them out. I am not sure if you workout your hamstrings but if you focus on them that should make your legs look more balance and your quads will not stand out so much.

    Another option would be to incorporate distance running into your workout regimen. If you suffer from joint pain I would not recommend it but if you could, start running long distance. This will eventually transform your leg muscles into more lean tissue. This is a technique used by women who have run track or played volleyball etc for a long time. :-) hope that helps.

    Yes, that helps more than you know. Thanks so much. Once my broken foot heals I will run longer distances. I also played Volleyball and ran Track so that must be the culprit. Darn the luck!

    Just curious - what are guys thoughts on girls with bulky quads or larger quads?

    Thank you, it was the 5k mud/obstacle run in denison. I think it was the first one and they will have another one in sept. The website for the next race is www.mudrush.org. I will be there if I am healed. It would be fun to get a group from MFP there!

    You are AWESOME! I did warrior dash last year before I really started working out and it was so hard. So I know exactly how hard you had to work for that. Congratulations! This is an outstanding accomplishment!

    As far as the bulky quads thing... I have the same problem with my calves. Always have. I've always hated them too. Every time I see another girl with bulky leg muscles like quads and calves, it kind of throws me off a little bit. But in the end, I guess it definitely is better than flab. I agree with the long distance running though. Let me know how it goes!

    Wear knee pads too, mine are so torn up and I would have gone faster with them.

    You made me laugh. I did run up a 200 yard hill to the finish line on a broken foot. I didn't know it was broken and probably made it worse but wanted a good time. I do feel great and thanks for the sweet comments.
