My First 5k Obstacle/Mud Run & 80lbs Lost – Lots of Pics

I DID IT!! I am beyond excited; so I thought I would share. I have always wanted to participate in a mud/obstacle 5k run but was always too heavy and out of shape. I lost 80lbs on MFP and did my first 5k mud obstacle run this weekend (I should of started with a normal 5k but oh well).
I finished 3rd in my heat, 2nd in my age group and 51st overall (about 500-600 runners total). I am just over the moon with excitement about my results. I was expecting to come in last place.
I also broke my foot in the last obstacle in the race; it was an 80 foot mud slide into a water/mud pit and a big rock (2 foot across) was at the bottom. The rock attacked my foot and now I have a hairline fracture but I finished running the race up a 100 yard hill with a broken foot...woot woot!!
I know you always say pics or it didn’t happen; so here you go!! If I can do this, anyone can do this!! I couldn’t run a minute straight when I started working out at 240lbs. Thanks for taking the time to celebrate with me and read my thread. I appreciate you!

After Pics from Race –
Playing on the beach before the mud/obstacle run
Duct taping my shoes on, so many peeps lost their shoes in the mud pits.
Watching the first 2 heats cross the finish line and super nervous to run.
Before the race, little did I know there was a huge rock hanging out in the bottom of that pit that would cause a hairline fracture in my foot…urgh!
After the race, I didn’t get a pic of me super muddy. I was power washed by the fire trucks before this pic. It was a blast but I was hurting a bunch.
I posted this in the wrong section but couldn't figure out how to delete it! If anyone knows let me know; so I can remove it from the fitness section (I am such a dork). Thanks.

Awesome job on your weight loss. You look amazing. Congratulations to you on doing the mud run. What a way to take that on as your first challenge.
Sorry to hear about your foot.. Oh ouch! Take it easy on that foot.
Best of Luck and Keep up the great success.
Your such an inspiration!0 -

Your quads look awesome!! Way to go!!
Funny you mention that. I HATE my quads. They are big and my trouble spot. I posted not long ago about my bulky quads and got all the standard responses - you are a girl and can't have bulky anything, you are fat not bulky, you can't get bulky quads while eating at a deficit, blah blah.
They are so wrong, I have bulky man quads and hate them. I guess I have to embrace them. You can see them really bad on the last pic where my leg is flexed because I am on my tippy toes, my shoes were muddy and nasty. Ugg I hate my quads but they are rock hard which is better than flab i guess.0 -

Let me first say GREAT JOB!! :-D
If I may offer a little advice you can "make" your legs look less bulky by evening them out. I am not sure if you workout your hamstrings but if you focus on them that should make your legs look more balance and your quads will not stand out so much.
Another option would be to incorporate distance running into your workout regimen. If you suffer from joint pain I would not recommend it but if you could, start running long distance. This will eventually transform your leg muscles into more lean tissue. This is a technique used by women who have run track or played volleyball etc for a long time. :-) hope that helps.

Yes, that helps more than you know. Thanks so much. Once my broken foot heals I will run longer distances. I also played Volleyball and ran Track so that must be the culprit. Darn the luck!
Just curious - what are guys thoughts on girls with bulky quads or larger quads?0 -

Thank you, it was the 5k mud/obstacle run in denison. I think it was the first one and they will have another one in sept. The website for the next race is www.mudrush.org. I will be there if I am healed. It would be fun to get a group from MFP there!0 -
Woo! You did good girl! Hook 'em \m/0

So freaking awesome on the weight loss and congrats on the run. You look amazing! Hope your foot heals quickly.0

100% awesome. Sorry you broke your foot, but then again, you're so badazz that you still finished the Mud Run!
Well done! You must feel as amazing as you look!0 -

You are AWESOME! I did warrior dash last year before I really started working out and it was so hard. So I know exactly how hard you had to work for that. Congratulations! This is an outstanding accomplishment!
As far as the bulky quads thing... I have the same problem with my calves. Always have. I've always hated them too. Every time I see another girl with bulky leg muscles like quads and calves, it kind of throws me off a little bit. But in the end, I guess it definitely is better than flab. I agree with the long distance running though. Let me know how it goes!
Keep up the awesomeness!0 -

Wear knee pads too, mine are so torn up and I would have gone faster with them.0 -

You made me laugh. I did run up a 200 yard hill to the finish line on a broken foot. I didn't know it was broken and probably made it worse but wanted a good time. I do feel great and thanks for the sweet comments.0 -
Well done!
You look amazing!0 -
Awesome!!!!! You look great!!! I can't wait for my Tough Mudder in July in So Cal!!!! It's going to be tough and fun, but I know I can do it just like u......duct tape? Must do that for my shoes too then. Does that help staying on?0

I was about to say your legs are awesome.0 -
You're such an inspiration!!!!!!! Well done!! Congrats on all you've accomplished! hope your fracture heals quickly!0

Knee Pads - Check! Lol stuff I would NOT have thought about! Thanks girl!0

You're amazing. Im just under 240lbs and look nothing like you do in your first picture. How tall are you? Its amazing how every single person is shaped so differently. Makes me sad that women compare their bodies to others. Anyway... Im hoping to do the warrior dash in August here in WI. I don't care about my time though because at 235lbs Im not expecting much lol. I hope your foot heals quickly, such a bummer. Wonder how many other people hurt themselves on that thing? BTW I think your legs look amazing and Id kill to have such toned "man legs". Its most definitely better than flab!0
-
Holy crap! You look amazing!!! So inspiring! I'm going to be competing in a mud run/obstacle course in August. It's done over 10kms but you don't have to run the whole thing ( I suppose if you really want to win you would run it) I can't wait! Whereabouts did you do yours?0
-
Congratulations on your great results -- both in the race and with your awesome weight loss! I think your legs are gorgeous and they don't look bulky to me!
I also want to compliment you on your style -- your workout gear is completely coordinated, down to the MATCHING DUCT TAPE!! So you're badass and you look great while you're doing it! ;-D0 -
I LOVE success stories ... and even moreso with pictures. You look FABULOUS! Congrats to you on your 80 pound weight loss, not to mention your improved fitness level! A 5K mud run ... WOW! I lost 42 pounds but still struggle to get three, one and a half minute jogging intervals into my daily treadmill routine of brisk walking. I want to run, but I'm afraid I'm just not "made" for it. You give me inspiration, though! Best of luck on the foot. Stress fractures aren't too bad. I had them in both feet at the same time a few years back. That was interesting to say the least - two walking boots, lol. Take good care and don't do too much too soon.0

Congrats! Amazing! I want to do the Warrior Dash so and but I'm just not ready this year0

Thanks for the info on the fractures, wow two at the same time; you are one tough cookie. I have actually broken both of my feet this year but not at the same time thank goodness.
About the running, I promise you can do it. I just started with C25k and worked up from there. I don't tend to run a 5k on the treadmill now but break it up into cardio intervals between cardio machines and just keep my heart rate up high like a 5k would. This helps me to build the endurace level I need to run the 5k but also keeps me from getting bored. I am convinced that it is all in my head. I "want" to quit running about every minute I am on the treadmill but have to make myself push through. Being at the actual race was much better because I didn't get bored but it was still very tough. Just keep increasing run times little by little and you will be running in no time. You can do this!!0 -
You dont have bulky man quads...you have athletic fit gorgeous quads...embrace them. You are strong and you should be proud!!!0
