It was Twilight fan fic. You can still download PDF's that still have the names Bella & Edward in it before she changed them.

I'm going to get flamed, but they are complete crap. It makes me so angry that so many woman think this is amazing fiction.

But, I guess I should be happy because at least people are reading books?

Totally agree. I think I wrote something like this when I was 14. Lol.

LOL. It was Twilight fanfiction before she self published. That's like one of the biggest things about it- she just changed "Bella" and "Edward" when it started to get popular: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/jacketcopy/2012/05/the-origins-of-50-shades-of-grey-go-missing.html

If you enjoy 50 shades though you should check out things like "Berkley Sensations" - it's a line of books that specializes in erotica. Or you could check out Romantic Times- it's a magazine that has TONS of romance, mystery, and erotica reviews, recommendations, and resources.

I have to be FULLY honest. I DO like these books! BUT... I too started " rolling my eyes" when they would have sex every other page. That part DID.. get boring.. I do like plot and character development.. but I still enjoyed this easy read.

I just finished the 3rd book a few days ago. Prior to knowing they were fanfic from the Twilight novels I felt the similarity. Scenes and verbiage can be repetitious but overall I enjoyed them.

Black Dagger Brotherhood is soooo much better than 50 Shades.

Vampire series by J.R. Ward. Check them out.

I'm going to look into this!!!!

EVERYONE should read the books by Laurell K Hamilton. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series and the Meredith Gentry series. THAT is some good reading. She is amazing.

    oh this again

Sorry to bore you. Sorry if there was already a post on it.. but I looked through the first 3 pages on " chitchat fun and games" and didn't see one. So, yeah.. this again. :flowerforyou:

Just was curious what others thought.

I never read the twilight series so I can't compare. I'm enjoying it but I feel it's very repetitive. And, as most love stories, hard to believe but I'm looking forward to the final book :-)

I'm on the last book now. it's been mildly entertaining. If I read one more time about "just-facked hair" & "happy trails" & "stirrings down...there" & "biting lips & eye rolls" I just might turn into a Dom and beat someone. I like the story but the sex schtick is getting old by the third book.

Has anyone seen the clip of Ellen DeGeneres reading a page from "50 Shades"? Hilarious.

Never seen Ellen! But, I do feel the sex thing got old quick. It was fun at first.. maybe its why I liked the first book the most. It got old halfway into the second book.

I'm not getting sucked in. Everyone says it's terrible writing and it was originally a fanfic for Twilight. The author just changed the names and sold it.
If you want a really good read, try Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series. It's a little advanced for the Twilight fans, but if you thought 50 Shades of Gray was good, then pick up Anne Rice. You will then realize that 50 Shades was made for teens.

I haven't read them yet, but I will. I'm a Passion Parties' consultant and our summer catalog is called "Shades of Summer" which is inspired by the books... some of the new products and specials we have coming out really made me curious about the books!!

I don't get the excitement over these books! I'm in the middle of the second one, and am not impessed! I'm an English Lit major so picked them up out of pure curiosity. It just amazes me what amazes others. Are people unaware that sexier fiction exists? Also, the characters are totally lack luster in my opinion and the story line is boring.

I read all three, by the time I was half way through the second book I started skipping full pages of scandalous scenes to try and actually follow the story line. Although, I think how Christian's character changes is pretty interesting... I'm just a sucker for reformed bad boys though.

Personal opinion, they're complete junk. Horribly written, stupid story line, and the sex isn't even remotely hot. But hey, whatever gets you goin'.

AGREED! The writing was horrific to say the least! She needed to get herself a thesaurus! I'm pretty sure if I read "bemused" or "mercurial" one more time I would scream. Plus, the plot is completely over the top. Don't get me wrong. I'm into some Kinky F-ery but this was unrealistic. Grey was f'd up. I don't find it plausible that he would do a complete 180 in a month and get "better"
  • after seeing all the hype over these books i felt i was missing out so went got the first one butttt i just cant get into it at all iv tried few times now ..however i picked up sam fiars essex book n read over half in one sitting so maybe its more to do with me than the books haha xxxx

And this review sums it up

    Did a teenager write this?

I really don't like writing bad reviews. I admire people who have the courage to put pen to paper and expose themselves to the whole world, especially those writing erotica. Having just finished this book, however, I feel compelled to write a review.

About half way through the book, I looked up the author to see if she was a teenager. I really did because the characters are out of a 16 year old's fantasy. The main male character is a billionaire (not a millionaire but a billionaire) who speaks fluent French, is basically a concert level pianist, is a fully trained pilot, is athletic, drop dead gorgeous, tall, built perfectly with an enormous penis, and the best lover on the planet. In addition, he's not only self made but is using his money to combat world hunger. Oh yeah, and all of this at the ripe old age of 26! And on top of that, he's never working. Every second is spent having sex or texting and emailing the female character. His billions seem to have just come about by magic. It seriously feels like 2 teenage girls got together and decided to create their "dream man" and came up with Christian Grey.

Then come the sex scenes. The first one is tolerable but as she goes on, they become so unbelievable that it becomes more laughable than erotic. She orgasms at the drop of a hat. He says her name and she orgasms. He simply touches her and she orgasms. It seems that she's climaxing on every page.

Then there's the writing. If you take out the parts where the female character is blushing or chewing her lips, the book will be down to about 50 pages. Almost on every single page, there is a whole section devoted to her blushing, chewing her lips or wondering "Jeez" about something or another. Then there's the use of "shades of". He's "fifty shades of @#$%% up," "she turned 7 shades of crimson," "he's ten shades of x,y, and z." Seriously?

The writing is just not up to par, the characters are unbelievable, and the sex verges on the comical. I don't know what happens in the remaining books and I do not intend to read them to find out. But given the maturity level of the first book, I imagine that they get married, have 2 perfect children, cure world hunger, and live happily ever after while riding into the sunset, as the female character climaxes on her horse causing her to chew her bottom lip and blush fifty shades of crimson. Jeez!

I agree! The lip biting and eye rolling is getting REALLY annoying and I'm only on the second book!

SO! Who has read the 50 Shades trilogy?! I am almost done with the third book. I LOVED the first book. Second was good, so was the third thus far.. but I feel like in the first one, I was somewhat reminded of twilight. Anyone else feel that AT ALL?
I didn't really feel that but I had heard it before I started reading them. When you get to the end you will really feel it cause the last of the book is from Christian's perspective like Meyer did with Edward on her web site.....I loved them both.

Have you read the Black Dagger brotherhood books by JR Ward? They are great, the first one is Dark Lover!

just wow . . . Twilight, 50 Shades and Black Dagger mentioned all in the same post . . . quite the spread on genres and quality of writing, I'd say.
