Fitbit uses the same technology as the Wii- it tracks the body's movement in space. It has an accelerometer, so it knows if I am walking or running. It also has an altimeter, so it knows if I am going up stairs or hills.
But no, it doesn't know if I am carrying my son around or carrying groceries. And it doesn't know if I am lifting weights- I enter some of my exercise manually but they make that fairly easy to do.
It's awesome and I love using it as a gauge of my general activity level. Most of us are very sedentary, and that is a big reason we have all this weight to lose. The fitbit is a really great motivator. So is this:

Omron do a pedometer (HJ720 ICT). which links to a web site. Here's the link. Why is fit but worth the extra money.
Please convince me.

Because it counts stairs and hills differently than regular steps... Plus it tracks your sleep, which is very important to overall health. And it syncs so well with MFP.
Worth every penny!0 -
The $49 is optional if you want to subscribe to fitbit's upgrade deal on their website. This is completely unnecessary if you are syncing your fit bit to MFP. Save your $49 bucks for some hot new gym shoes instead!
Agree with this^^. I don't see the need for the yearly fee either.... I LOVE my fit bit!0
