  • I don't think it's a stupid question. Here: Let's say a serving size of something is 100 calories. They list it as 1/4 cup or 50 grams. If you measure by the cup, you get about 25 grams. So if you use the volume measurement alone, you're getting 50 calories. However, if you go by weight, it's a lot more than just 1/4 cup.…
  • When I eat avocado, I usually split it up between two meals, e.g., half for breakfast on an English muffin and half for lunch over a salad. That way, I get to enjoy avocado twice!
  • No, the US isn't the only place in the world with obese children. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/stark-warning-on-childhood-obesity-problem-468833.html
  • It's really difficult for any person to say a child *needs* to be taken away from their parent--this is extremely, extremely traumatic for the child. How do we know we're not going to create MORE problems taking a child away from his/her parents?
  • My blood pressure is very low, similar to yours. My doctor said to drink more water, and I find it helps a little. When you're dehydrated, your BP goes way down (less water = less blood to be putting pressure on your blood vessels!).
  • You could have had five peeps, but you wouldn't have gotten the fiber and vitamin C... but the grapefruit is probably sweetened, like the person above said.

  • "Chewing and spitting" is actually a form of bulimia. Doing it once or twice won't make you bulimic, but bulimic behaviors are addictive. Chewing and spitting is bad on your teeth, and your stomach produces acid when you chew. If no food is going into your stomach, all that acid can be detrimental. Please be careful and…
  • Thanks for your help, all! There are some good suggestions
  • Good question! Naah, I don't think so... a surprise box of healthy stuff would be no fun!
  • If they say they can't do anything, tell them you want your money back for the time remaining on your membership, because you don't feel safe going to their gym.
  • If you measure out your food and know how many calories you're eating, it doesn't matter how fast you eat it. But if you're just grazing or eating at a buffet or something like that, because it does take a while for your stomach to register fullness, people will tend to overeat.
  • I've lost 119lbs since January 2009. I'm not sure about a goal weight yet... hoping to weigh 160lbs by the end of 2011, but I may want to keep going even after that.
  • If you're halving your typical calories eaten (going from 2400 to 1200), you're definitely going to be hungry. That's a pretty drastic cut! It'll be easier on you to cut back MUCH more gradually. Try eating 300 calories less than your typical daily allotment for a week. Then the next week, try 300 less. So this week, go…

  • Neither is inherently healthier. Depends on what you're eating... you can be vegan and still eat a bunch of vegan cookies! (Same for vegetarians who eat a bunch of pizza or something.) The trick with being vegan is you need to be sure to get complete proteins. It's easier as a vegetarian, because you can eat…
  • Eating as low as 600 calories outside doctor supervision for too long will probably get you sick. It's hard to get all the nutrients your body needs to function when taking in such low amounts of food. One or two days of 600 cals won't kill someone, but doing it for too long is very dangerous.

  • Really, people didn't eat nuts and seeds back in the day? That is interesting, and something I'll have to look into further later. Nonetheless, humans also did not evolve drinking cow's milk, but many people have now adapted ways to digest it. Nuts and seeds are great forms of protein, and if you pair them with whole…
  • Not a stupid question at all. Some people find if they stick to a strict schedule, that helps them keep on track and not overeat. If you are one of them, it can be difficult to deviate from the set schedule. That said, it's ok to switch things up occasionally. Sometimes life throws us speed bumps, and we end up going way…

  • Hmm, I'm in the US so I'm not sure whether you can buy it in stores in the UK. But I did find this site... http://koolaiduk.com/category.php?id_category=14 My personal favorite is pink lemonade.
  • reread and realized i misunderstood, never mind.
  • I've lost 116lbs since January 2009. That works out to about a pound a week. (Loss was much quicker in the beginning, then slowed down... it's about .5 lbs a week now.) Note also that I probably started at a MUCH heavier weight than you... and had lots more to lose! You can do it! If anyone makes any comments to you, just…
  • Hey, congratulations on "graduating"! It's such a good feeling isn't it?
  • I'm always happy when I find out someone I know is trying to lose weight. I feel so much better about myself and so much healthier (not to mention I LOOK so much better) now than I ever have in my life... and I'd love it if everyone in the world was this happy. The problem with that analogy is that the pursuit of becoming…
  • Try to think of it as becoming healthy, not becoming skinny. You deserve to feel GREAT and at the tip top of health!
  • Unfortunately, there is no simple answer that will work for everyone 100% of the time. You'll need to use trial and error to figure out what works for you. I recommend eating 100 more calories every day. If, after 2 weeks, that doesn't work to help break your plateau, try adding another 100 more per day. edited for…
  • I've done that before... but then I always delete it. I've become rather OCD with my food journal! :embarassed:
  • To clarify, what definition are you using for "starvation mode"? I've seen a few conflicting ones. Is it a slowdown of metabolism that happens (or does not happen) after a couple days' worth of eating very few calories? Or is it a slowdown of metabolism that happens (or does not happen) after a prolonged period of eating…
  • Yes, you can gain 3lbs in one day! But remember that it's almost certainly going to be water or food weight, not fat weight. The scale doesn't know whether you gained weight from water, fat, food, muscle, clothes, the cat stepping on the scale with you (hey that happened to me once), or whatever. It's best to weigh…
  • You might need to go easy on the exercising, ease yourself into it a little better. Try doing it every other day (and definitely not twice in one day) for a few weeks. And if it hurts bad, definitely stop and find a lower impact exercise (e.g. just plain old walking, or biking, or elliptical machine, or swimming). You may…
  • Good for you! Awesome milestone! Keep up the good work. :flowerforyou:
