So, I don't do a PALEO diet (I like the thought but we have two sets of teeth for a reason) and most of the coconut oil threads on MFP are from PALEO peeps. I bought 2 jars of virgin coconut oil, one for applying to my skin and one for eating. But it's so darn high in calories! Wondering how do people use it and are you seeing benefits? ( I read its good for getting a flat belly .... And lowering cholesterol ... anyone seen results?)
I should add I'm not doing a low fat diet, I need the good oils at my time of life

Bump. Anyone?0

I use it. I like it, especially when using high heat which is something not recommended for olive oil. Do I beleive all the health claims? No, but I'm liking how my skin and hair look (I use it topically as well), my improved digestion. My cholesterol has improved greatly - I won't give all the credit to coconut oil, but I do follow a LCHF diet.0
-
Thank you what is LCHF? Low carb high fibre?0
-
Low Carb High Fat - hence the coconut oil as I'm always looking for a good fat source :-)0

Olive oil and Coconut oil are both fats with 9 cals per gram.
I cook green beans by frying in coconut oil.
bit of info at http://coconut-oil-tips.com/food-drink/coconut-oil-vs-olive-oil-benefits-comparison/ about the constituents.0 -

There is also something about mcts being oxidized extremely fast. idk, we all know TDEE vs intake matters overall.0 -
I spoke to a really great medicinal chef who uses coconut for high heat, roasting etc & olive oil for the rest. He did explain why, its something in how the fat compounds are broken down and the lack of omega 6 which is present in 'modern day oils & margarine' (omega 3 is where it is at, apparently) - he was raving about cutting out those omega 6's anyway. I sound like i dont know what im talking about, because i don't - just trying to remember what he said.. .I think both coconut & olive oil are good though0

coconut oil activates your metabolism better when it comes to burning fat calories. It has so freaking many health benefits including assisting with hypothyroid disorder and other metabolic syndromes, hair, skin, etc etc etc.
Olive oil tastes better0 -
I love using it, (apart from its lower smoking point been caught out a few times)
I prefer the taste you get with coconut oil than with olive oil fits in with alot of thai influenced cooking i do0 -
I am Asian and I have yet to see coconut oil being used for cooking. It might be different cultures of course but... where I come from, coconut oil is usually used for hair (it gives hair awesome strength, shine etc).
I'm very big on olive oil. It gives great flavor and I think the calories are reasonable.
Sorry not much help here I guess0 -

Have any peer reviewed scientific studies that backs up that assertion?0 -
Thanks everyone I'm having it on toast before exercising today - much as I love the coconut oil on my skin I can't say I'm enjoying eating it, yuk! Olive oil wins on the taste score for sure! I'm going to persevere though, it just seems to have so many good properties.0

and i'm not entering into debate. I have looked into it. I don't really care if people disagree. Theres enough to convince me.0 -

I'm not getting into the debate either because frankly, I don't know enough about the topic (nor do I care to really) however what you linked looks more like a blog. A peer reviewed scientific study would be... peer reviewed scientific study. These kinds of blog sites can say anything but obviously we cannot call them research. I'm sure there are sites out there that say drinking NaOH is good for your health and even go as far as saying Ben Afflec is a good actor. Can't trust everything on the internet ya know.
This thread could be of some use to you perhaps?

I love it in my cooking. I refuse to use anything else & have in in place of butter on toast. Toasted cheese sandwiches taste awesome with it on the outside. I cook daily with it.
I hardly taste it in my dinner though cause I have so much chilli in there, but every other time I love the taste of it.0 -

No debate for sure. You believe a page of blog marketing backed by nothing resembling actual science. Seems legit.0 -
My dog has a skin disorder and I use coconut oil as a moisturizer on him. It works great for that. Coconut oil has a crap ton of saturated fat so I'd rather stick with olive oil for eating. A good quality olive oil tastes like heaven.0

Coconut oil and virgin olive oil can be heated without the fats turning into something that isn't so good, apparently. Both are great for inflammatory skin conditions, and hair, and nails, both great for eating...honestly!
Try roasting veggies in coconut oil rather than spreading on toast... Use it as the base oil for stir-fries or curries.
Perhaps try and make sure you are eating the virgin coconut oil - there is stuff added/used in the processing of 'pure' coconut that makes it less pleasant to consume.
Just as a little aside - I think some of the claims about how good it is for flat bellies etc may mean a more radical change in diet rather than just using it in place of other oils...I'll have let you know about the cholesterol levels - just had my bloods done this week...0 -

Bolded the area so maybe you won't remain confuse. She couldn't find a non-paleo POV on the subject and made a thread.

the phrase "we have two sets of teeth for a reason" in relation to not eating paleo is the source of confusion. At least for me. I would be interested to know what was meant by that.0 -

Think she dislikes Paleo followers. Won't be the only one really. She just wanted to make sure this thread doesn't turn into yet another paleo diet fad thread. Can't really blame her though terminology could obviously be improved. I'd ignore that comment for the sake of keeping the thread related imo.0 -

I use it as a deep conditioner, and as a serum after using straightening irons. great for both0 -

You just massage your head (and ensuring oil is used all over the hair, like shampoo really) and then let it sit for an hour (I usually just used to put it on before sleeping and made sure I slept with an old pillow case) and then take a shower and shampoo your hair.0
