NON PALEO please .. Coconut oil v olive oil (virgin)

I am Asian and I have yet to see coconut oil being used for cooking. It might be different cultures of course but... where I come from, coconut oil is usually used for hair (it gives hair awesome strength, shine etc).
I'm very big on olive oil. It gives great flavor and I think the calories are reasonable.
Sorry not much help here I guess
Ohh how do you use coconut oil in hair?
Sounds like its a wonder oil!
I use it as a deep conditioner, and as a serum after using straightening irons. great for both
Thanks, going to try that.0 -

I bought some a while back but really do not like the taste - I think I will have to start using it on my hair and maybe as a moisturizer.0 -
So, I don't do a PALEO diet (I like the thought but we have two sets of teeth for a reason) and most of the coconut oil threads on MFP are from PALEO peeps. I bought 2 jars of virgin coconut oil, one for applying to my skin and one for eating. But it's so darn high in calories! Wondering how do people use it and are you seeing benefits? ( I read its good for getting a flat belly .... And lowering cholesterol ... anyone seen results?)
I should add I'm not doing a low fat diet, I need the good oils at my time of life
paleo people eat meat and veggies... thus satisfying the requirement for having two sets of teeth.
your post confuses me.
Bolded the area so maybe you won't remain confuse. She couldn't find a non-paleo POV on the subject and made a thread.
You're welcome
the phrase "we have two sets of teeth for a reason" in relation to not eating paleo is the source of confusion. At least for me. I would be interested to know what was meant by that.
Lol someone has already asked this... the OP reply was that she had to much wine... love it
okay lol... that's a reasonable explanation :drinker:0 -

Do we have two sets of teeth? Or is it one set? Do the upper and lower make a set - which would be one set?
Maybe I need some wine.0 -

see, this kinda crap is why these forums aren't the resource they could be. ANECDOTAL evidence is good enough for many. Oh and the 'blogger'? She's a highly respected NZ nutritionist, trainer and health guru. Works with one of our national teams. So yeah, I'd listen to her.0 -
unless something has changed coconut oil is an about 66% MCT which is 8.3 cals a gram.
The oil in my hand proclaims a calorific value of 900 calories per 100g, and the MCFA content is 86%.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11880549 says "From the literature reviewed, we conclude that MCT increase energy expenditure, may result in faster satiety and facilitate weight control when included in the diet as a replacement for fats containing LCT."0 -

I think you're taking this personally and maybe you're in the right. However, you have to realize that many of us have spent a large amount of time challenging the false information on the internet and have come to learn to accept only good, solid research as means of information. So when folks link these blogs, no matter who they claim to be, without proper research we just cannot believe them.
You linked a blogger saying that she's a highly respected NZ trainer and health guru. We have several of those in US too. Bob Harper etc. They CONSTANTLY tell crap which is dismissed by research. The suggestions are mostly total crap.
Try the link I posted earlier and checkout the research. You might be highly delighted0 -
Thanks everyone I'm having it on toast before exercising today - much as I love the coconut oil on my skin I can't say I'm enjoying eating it, yuk! Olive oil wins on the taste score for sure! I'm going to persevere though, it just seems to have so many good properties.
Toast doesn't sound good. I put it in my coffee sometimes. IT's yummy like that. One day I poked holes in warm cupcakes and poured some on then topped them with strawberry jam, let that set then frosted them. Not the healthiest. But tasted good.0 -

You just massage your head (and ensuring oil is used all over the hair, like shampoo really) and then let it sit for an hour (I usually just used to put it on before sleeping and made sure I slept with an old pillow case) and then take a shower and shampoo your hair.
Me too. I rely on cal deficit to get rid of my belly and it's working as per previous poster. I consider coconut oil amazing for my skin and hair, and possibly logically for my insides too, like olive oil does good things on the outside so maybe on the inside. My logic is also skewed by wine right now, but I just don't ingest a whole lot of it hoping it will trim my waist. I rely on cals for that, and only ingest it when I find a way it tastes good, and with the side hope it will do more than flavor my food. I look at it like I look at other 'healthy fats" like avocados, olive oil, etc. and not much different. But with a tastier flavor. That's all. I wouldn't credit it with my weight loss even though I've had some in the last few months.0 -

We have two sets of teeth because adult teeth don't fit in a baby head, and baby teeth in an adult head are far less efficient than the milk teeth approach many mammals have adapted.0

There is however only one answer to whether "coconut oil activates your metabolism better when it comes to burning fat calories. " or not. Source was asked (rightly so) and you couldn't provide it. No harm done. I have made similar mistakes and learned from them and moved on.
You can either gripe about the situation or learn from it. If its me you've put on ignore then hopefully somebody else learns the value of proper research before making such claims and learn the ability to weed out BS claims such as made by the blogger you posted0 -
Hehe! It's morning here now! Enjoy your wine everyone!
Taunto, yes, you understood me perfectly thanks. I'm not anti paleo per se, I just don't do strict fad diets and people do tend to get evangelical when they're on one. My foolish inebriated faux pas reflected this view
I actually bought the virgin coconut oil to put on my skin but my dermatologist told me there is new scientific evidence to suggest it feeds bad bacteria. I've read up lots of scientific articles this week and couldn't find anything to match his claim but plenty of others that do validate what other people have said on this thread. I don't have the web history on my iPad but will share the links when I get to my pc.0 -
All this scientific study stuff is BS. I like this video:

Studies are still statistical and do not encompass everyone. I like personal experimentation. My diet works for me and I could give a rat's butt if it works for anyone else.0 -

I've always wondered, how does one train to be a 'health guru'?0 -
So, I don't do a PALEO diet (I like the thought but we have two sets of teeth for a reason) and most of the coconut oil threads on MFP are from PALEO peeps. I bought 2 jars of virgin coconut oil, one for applying to my skin and one for eating. But it's so darn high in calories! Wondering how do people use it and are you seeing benefits? ( I read its good for getting a flat belly .... And lowering cholesterol ... anyone seen results?)
I should add I'm not doing a low fat diet, I need the good oils at my time of life
paleo people eat meat and veggies... thus satisfying the requirement for having two sets of teeth.
your post confuses me.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9570335Fatty acids undergo different metabolic fates depending on their chain length and degree of saturation. The purpose of this review is to examine the metabolic handling of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) with specific reference to intermediary metabolism and postprandial and total energy expenditure. The metabolic discrimination between varying fatty acids begins in the GI tract, with MCFA being absorbed more efficiently than long chain fatty acids (LFCA). Subsequently, MCFA are transported in the portal blood directly to the liver, unlike LCFA which are incorporated into chylomicrons and transported through lymph. These structure based differences continue through the processes of fat utilization; MCFA enter the mitochondria independently of the carnitine transport system and undergo preferential oxidation. Variations in ketogenic and lipogenic capacity also exist. Such metabolic discrimination is supported by data in animals and humans showing increases in postprandial energy expenditure after short term feeding with MCFA. In long term MCFA feeding in animals, weight accretion has been attenuated. These differences in metabolic handling of MCFA versus LCFA are considered with the conclusion that MCFA hold potential as weight loss agents.0 -

That's a 15 yo review article. In the 15 years since that article there are just as many studies showing little benefit of MCFAs as there are showing benefit, so my impression is that the jury is still out.
I get very suspicious of 'nutrition experts' making these unsubstantiated claims about the amazing properties of coconut oil. In my opinion there need to be a lot more well designed human studies before any definite conclusions can be made.0 -
I have been using unrefined, extra virgin, cold-pressed coconut oils, of varying brands, since Jan. 2007. I use it for so many purposes. I rub it onto my skin after showers, while I'm still wet. I apply it to my feet. I cured athlete's feet a few years back, by first soaking my feet in white vinegar, then applying coconut oil. Did that every day for a few days and the athlete's feet was gone.
No more cracking heels either.
I use it in so many of my foods. It is my primary oil, though I sometimes also may use avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil. I add a teaspoon to my one cup of coffee each morning, along with some raw honey, powdered cacao, and whey protein supplement for cream.
I put it in my yummy, creamy, frozen cacoa/banana almond milk, protein shakes...maybe a teaspoon or two, depending on what fat macros goal I'm still needing for the day. I use it for sauteing or steaming my veggies. I buy Whole Foods wild-caught tuna packed in water, then add a teaspoon or two of coconut oil, for that nice mouth feel. I may add it to my green smoothies, if I'm trying to meet macros goal for fat and haven't yet. I also make my own salad dressings. It is very difficult to find salad dressings that aren't made with soy oil, so I make my own using Simply Organic salad dressing mixes, some Bragg's raw apple cider vinegar and/or fresh squeezed lemon juice, and coconut oil. I toss it all in my Magic Bullet and it makes a very yummy and healthy dressing. My diary is wide open if anybody is interested in ideas on how to use it.
I'll try to list all the benefits I've personally witnessed since using coconut oil. One is that I've rarely had muscle soreness since using it. I don't get yeast infections of any kind anymore...including athlete's feet. It seems to help with healing any cuts, burns, scrapes, bug bites, etc... Maybe due to its reported anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-biotic properties. It gives me a very satisfied feeling after eating, so that I don't feel hungry again for some long time after eating it. Also, it gives me a lot of energy...I mean almost like a caffeine boost of energy. I love to use it before intensive workouts and after.
My friend who has Diabetes Type 2 has had great success with coconut oil in various diabetes related health issues he has, including a nerve condition that makes the out-most skin layers of his legs very, very uncomfortable. Nothing he was using was helping, even doctor prescribed medicines. He was able to get a lot of relief by using coconut oil both topically and internally. He also recently began using medicinal grade hemp oil, which he says helps too, but is harder to get and more expensive.
Lately, I've been reading a lot about the research going on into Diabetes Type 3 and the success being seen in patients with severe dementia who are given coconut oil. This is a subject near and dear to me, since Alzheimer's runs on my mom's side of the family, with both her mom and her sister having ultimately died from it.
My mom uses coconut oil each day too and loves it.
Do a Google search on "Diabetes 3" and look for more info, if you're interested. Here are just a couple of articles about it, to get you started. There are so many, so if this information is of interest to you, you'll like sift through your own searched for articles.
