Exclusionary clothing stores.

That'd be like being pissed that a Mexican restaurant doesn't have Chinese food on their menu.
:laugh:0 -
I have the opposite problem (please don't hate me!) where I don't bother going to certain stores because they probably won't have anything small enough. That means cheap places like Walmart but also mid-range stores like Ann Taylor. I'm short so clothing that's too loose tends to make me look frumpy, but the small fitted stuff is usually only at more expensive stores.0

Now, all I want to do is go shopping.. :laugh:0

Different stores cater to different clientele. That's how they make their money. You don't see stores like Lane Bryant carrying my size and I'm not going to complain about that. That'd be like being pissed that a Mexican restaurant doesn't have Chinese food on their menu.
Honestly, I can't think of a thing that tops this, so I'll just quote it
just had to add. I pass a restaurant almost daily that serves both chinese and mexican food. Never been courageous enough to try it.
On the original topic. I was surprised that old navy has a plus section. I normally wear a 3x for comfort buta 2x at old navy fits perfectly. AND what about stores like Catherine's that sell only plus size clothes? are they being exclusionary and discriminating against skinny people?0 -
That doesn't mean that the inches are correct or consistent among brands. And for the record, I have shopped with my wife for 20 years. I'm probably more familiar than most men with women's clothing as I have bought things for my wife and I shop with her often. We both take about the same amount of time trying to find clothes that fit. If you want to just whine, by all means be my guest. I'm sure the entire world is arrayed against you.
Entire world really? Dont you think youre being a bit over dramatic? I dont remember attacking you?0 -
Oh for God's sake, clothing from V.S. is made from several different manufacturers in Mexico. The grading is not always the same. Pattern grading.
Oh, btw, don't mess with me when you're discussing sizing/ fashion/ pattern grading, draping, textile composition. I will be right.0 -
What I'm wondering is if the OP is shopping in Junior stores and getting mad they won't fit?
Why are women shopping in juniors? Why not shop in regular women's clothing?
Someone mentioned 5-7-9 - that's a junior store as well.. it's an odd number, it's a junior size. Women sizes are even numbers.
I don't get mad when I don't fit into junior sizes... I'M NOT A JUNIOR. I'm a full curved WOMAN.
All clothing manufacturers make clothes differently, that's why we all wear different sizes sometimes. There is a company I love and I know I can wear a small with them. Other companies, I'm a medium.0 -
Meh, wear clothes that fit you well. Nobody sees where you bought it or the size once it's on. An outfit that suits your figure will flatter you more than squeezing into something that doesn't fit just because it's the size you want.
It seems like common sense.....it will never catch on, no matter how much I agree.0 -
It's simple all you have to say is they dont get your money. Obviously they dont need money and money is not that important to the company.
I wish Lane Bryant had a smaller size sister company because I'd shop there at goal just on principal, but they dont. Not sure which company I would find worthy enough to have my money when I get to goal? I'll have to research.
I think The Limited is Lane Bryant's smaller sized sister company.0 -
lol, All the pretentiousness. Chill.
I should have made myself clearer. It was more of the *way* the employee went about it that irritated me. Like, I know I'm a little bigger but jeeze.
To everyone that mentioned Abercrombie, I also refuse to - and have never - and will never shop there. Especially due to the recent statements by the CEO, but that's not the only reason that would motivate me.
I was moreso looking for people to share their frustrations with clothes shopping/things clothing store employees have said. Thanks for those that have shared!0 -
I believe that every private business has a right to cater to customers they want to. They make money from it apparently.
I think it sucks when you can't fit into things but you could technically complain about stores exclusive about being only for children or a different generation. Or some stores only sell work out gear and others are only for luxury items. It's a bunch of different niches! Size can play into that too and its important. Thankfully we live in a capitalistic society where you can shop wherever you want. I would Google USSR and bras for an idea of how bad it really could be. :flowerforyou:0 -
I just wish I could find clothing that fits that isn't expensive. Lane Bryant seems so expensive to me. So sad, I haven't shopped anywhere but Wal-mart in years because I can't afford the expensive plus size stores. Shoot, I can't even afford Wal-mart, so what am I complaining about again? Oh yeah, mean people suck. But I honestly think she was trying to make you feel better unless she said it in a snarky way.0

I can't wear things from there or 5*7*9 or Abercrombie. Also Victoria's Secret doesn't make a bra size big enough for me cup wise.
But I rock at finding cute clothes elsewhere, so that's no big.
I wont even go into a Victoria's Secret because Im positive they dont have anything in my size! I could be wrong but Im a doubtin' it lol
Victoria Secret does have clothes that fit larger people. They go up to XL. I'm 30 lbs over for my height and I shop there all the time.
edited for dumb spelling.0 -

I totally agree. Different stores cater to different people based on age, gender, size. They just do.
OP, I'm not quite sure why you love Rue 21 if you don't fit in their clothes. Also I don't think you are "pretty woman-ing" anything by returning to the store once you are able to fit and then buying all their clothes. Unless I misunderstood what your plans are when you go back.
I do understand that it's frustrating when clothes don't fit. It happens to me. But I'm short with a big butt. I need a bigger size yet they are a mile and a half to long. But that's why you should keep looking until you find a place that you like and fits well.0 -

I mean the plus size is typical Old Navy quality, but I've gotten some really nice tops and dresses from them. I even bought some cute cashmere sweaters on year always get compliments on the sweaters.
Yes Catherines is being exclusionary. That lets you know that the money of smaller people, according to Catherine's, is not valuable to them.0 -
I want to own my own Victoria's Secrets franchise so I can stock XLs that actually ARE XL (size 10 is NOT XL), and I'm going to stock the XXS drawers w Twinkies. Mwaaahahahaha!0

Yes... this happened to me all the time.
However, I will share this with you: I went in to a plus-sized store the other day with a friend and the associates looked at me like I was nuts for being there (I'm a size 10/12, by no means a 4) and then said, "uh, why are YOU here?". I guess it was sort of a back-handed compliment, but I really didn't like it. Maybe it's part of the deal, no matter what store you're in, or what kind of clientele they cater to.0 -

Try old navy online. You know you can find some really nice clothes in a second hand store too. Also I bet there are some people on MFP who are getting rid of their clothing, and would probably be happy to send it to you. There's a clothing exchange group on MFP but its not very active0 -

Look, here are your own words:
"But it's still measured in inches or are you a size blue? You guys can argue with me all you want, but I just want you to go one day buy yourself a pair of jeans and buy your wife a pair of jeans straight off the rack and report back. "
It's really not worth an argument, and it's simply a matter of whether someone wants to believe that the world is arrayed against them or not. I choose to believe not and get on with things. Best of luck in your shopping endeavors.0 -
'Squeeze' wasn't the right word. The tops fit...after I wash them. It loosens the fibers or something. They even hang a little loose, which is nice because I hate the feel of a tight tshirt showing off flab, lol. I am aware of what fits my body and I don't walk around with cringe-worthy tightness.
Rue 21 isn't a junior store to me. They have cute stuff. A lot of my own friends, older than me even, shop there. If I were shopping at Justice or something, yeah, berate away. :P
Oh, Internet.0 -

No, The Limited sold Lane Bryant in 2002.0 -
I went into Torrid (a plus sized clothing store) a few weeks ago in hopes of finding a bathing suit. There was this girl at the front and she immediately approached me as I was looking through the racks. This girl was triple my size and she said "sweetie just wanna let you know that our sizes run really small, so you will probably have to go up a size or two." LOL. She gave me a dirty look and walked off. I didn't even bother looking. I gave her a "who do you think you are" kinda look, smiled, and then I walked right out of that store. It was kinda hurtful but then I laughed about it at the end. I try the best I can to laugh at ignorant people.0

Oh, Internet.
Rue21 is a juniors store in my opinion....just check out their website...its obviously aimed at high schoolers. I'm not attacking you, I'm just suggesting maybe you try other options... I don't fit into juniors stuff either, the fit isnt right. And I am not overweight by a long shot so I dont think weight or size is playing a part here. It's just not flattering for grown women in my opinion.0 -
Being a petite 5'2" (short arms, legs, & torso), 90% of all stores are exclusionary to me.
It's one reason why I'm starting to sew my own clothes. The other reason being I can't stand to wear polyester & other man-made fabrics. More and more the only clothes I can manage to find in a petite size are made of that dreaded man-made crap.0 -
The way you tell the story, the sales associate sounds mean. But, having been a sales associate in a ladies' clothing department of a higher end department store, I know how delicate the dance can be when you're trying to help someone who clearly isn't going to fit into the size they want/is available.
My mantra that "Just because you can zip it, doesn't mean it fits" comes from my time trying to convince size 16 ladies that the size 12 skirt they squeezed into wasn't supposed to hug EVERY curve of their backside & thighs like that. It was designed to have a different look altogether. . .perhaps a larger size would be more comfortable. Nope. They'd insist it fit or that our clothing was poorly sized.
It's hard to sell women clothing because our feelings get hurt by the reality that not all styles are flattering on our figures. It's not an insult. . .it's just the truth. And, while I haven't been in the store you mentioned, I've followed my 13 year old daughter around stores like Hot Topic, Body Central, etc., and trust me. . .ain't nothing about this 41 year old momma's body gonna fit into THOSE clothes. . .and I'm in decent shape these days. Use your displeasure at not being able to find your size to motivate you to get to the place where a) you don't care about that kind of crap; or b) you fit into their clothing and life is all sunshine and kittens.0 -
Yeah, I'll pretty much cry a little tear the day I'm too small for Torrid & Lane Bryant. They are the only stores that treat me decently when I shop there. I will have no idea where to get clothes at that point.
One of the other posters said they are owned by the Limited Company, so I would encourage you to patronize those stores. I feel the same way you do.0 -

Thank you. I thought I heard Old Navy carries plus sized, but the last time I checked into it, I couldn't find my size. I don't remember what I size I was then, so maybe? I went to Goodwill this weekend. I didn't even have the energy to figure out how they had their racks set up. It smelled bad and seemed over-priced for really used stuff. I did get a pair of jean capri's at Ross though. I totally forgot about that. They are too tight in the calves though so I am going to cut them off and turn them into beach shorts. It didn't fix my problem of only having 2 pairs of pants that fit, but for $6, I really can't complain too much.0 -

I am totally there with you... on all fronts (I am also 5'2")... I just want some cute flattering clothes... I need to make time to learn how to sew as well... It has been on my to do list for a few years now.
A lot of clothes I can't wear, because I don't have the waist for it... at all.0 -
TIL when women go shopping it isnt that rare that they are horrible to each other.0

Meh, we just want to complain about not being able to find clothing.... It's more common than the rude salesperson (which I fortunately haven't encountered... or if I have I brushed it off). :flowerforyou:0
