leave her alone! that pic was taken in october!

    MEANIE!

Besides - veganism is more about being ethical than strict "letter of the law" adherence. There is some debate amongst vegans what to do with a pair of leather shoes you had before converting. The options are:

    1. Keep them for the rest of their useful life than replace with vegan shoes.
    2. Donate them to charity and replace with vegan shoes.

Neither answer here is "more right", a a sampling of vegans will give you people on both sides of that fence.

Yep. I kept mine. Also my son's baseball glove. Are there even good synthetic versions of baseball gloves? I dunno? Guess I need to do more research. ;)

I meant to add above: there is an option 3: Throw them away and get new shoes. This is the "least vegan" (and least ethical because its the most wasteful and disrespectful to the animal) option. It is simply the wrong answer.

Hi, I'm actually vegan and MFP is telling me that I'm consuming way too much sugar (all natural sugars, dates, maple syrup, fruits) and too much fat (natural fats, avocadoes, nuts, seeds)... I mean, is it okay or does it really affect my health? And I still lack proteins... I can eat as much as I can chickpeas, nuts, avocadoes, nuts milk, etc., it still remains the same if I'm respecting my calories intake. I guess I should take vegan protein shakes...

Don't worry about tracking sugar unless you have a medical reason to do so, and overconsumption of fats shouldn't pose any risks or inhibit your weight loss as long as you are staying within your calorie goal.

Great. I was only wondering if it was really risky for me to consume more sugar/fat than recommended by MFP and I thought that nuts were providing way more protein than MFP is displaying. Actually, this diet doesn't fit to everyone and I respect that.

Just chiming in to say that Bridgedale makes Bamboo socks as an alternative to wool. They obviously lack the anti-microbial properties and supreme comfort of great wool socks, but they are a suitable alternative for those with wool allergies or, as I have recently learned, vegans. Carry on.

I'm going to help jack this thread...I use vegan protein shakes after I go to the gym..simply because I have a dairy intolerance (I still eat meat). I use almond milk and pea protein powder instead of whey powder.

Not even cotton has given me the same level of awful blisters that I get from bamboo, so it's not for everyone.

No, nuts aren't a good source of protein. Some good sources would be beans, lentil, tvp, tofu, soy milk, seitan, meat analogs like Boca burgers. Edamamme, chickpeas..... Just to name a few.

OP, what's your view on eating eggs from happy, free range, eithically raised chickens, given that unfertilized eggs are mentruation and would occur regardless of any human intervention and once they are laid, unless the hen is broody, they sit and rot? Really, it equates to using manure for fertilizer as they are a waste product. Thoughts?

I think OP has checked out and left us to our own devices.

I actually have a friend who raises her own hens for eggs. I broached the subject with my husband, because this is the only scenario I could ever see myself eating eggs again. I couldn't trust 'cage free' eggs found in a supermarket, but I know my friend's hens are very well taken care of, happily living their little chicken lives. One of them likes to lay her eggs in the front hedge, rather than the coop. It's pretty funny.

We decided that now is not the time, for us, but I'm not against that at all. Nor am I against hunting (for food, not sport)..... My main beef ;) with beef is factory farming.

Yeah, my folks have 2 chickens and they supply eggs and these chooks are the happiest animals on earth. If you sit down in the backyard, they come sit in your lap. I supply one of the guys at work with eggs from them because he's vegetarian/closer to vegan but he's seen the chickens and doesn't feel bad eating their eggs!

Lauren: is it common for vegans to go over on fats based on standard MFP settings?

I can't speak for everyone, but I'm usually under on the days I don't eat avocado. :p Today I hit 28 grams and my goal was 40.

That was what I was wondering. As I eat more "plants" and less "animals" I see that my fats have gone way down and I actually have to think a bit about them. I've been logging the last few weeks with exactly that in mind as I don't intend to eat "low fat".

Sauté in olive oil or use it as a dressing on salads

PETA is full of crazies. My family has a dairy farm and I can tell you that those animals are better taken care of then any of us kids were. A farmer's livelihood is dependent on having healthy happy animals. The vast majority of farmers do an excellent job taking care of their animals.
A friend I went to college with had a dairy farm and those cows have air conditioning!! lol

I do, but as I have to watch my calories (and I measure the oil I cook in and log it) I use limited amounts. I saute in anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 1tablespoon of oil, depending on the recipe. It's hard for me to hit my fat macro without going over in calories. I'm ok with it.

On the positive side, I am saving a ton of money, I used to go through olive oil like crazy.

If I want to use olive oil. Yes. Typically, I'd rather eat some avocado, or some nuts. But yes.

I think I get it....if OP has been reading PETA materials and forcing herself to watch slaughterhouse videos, she's been getting really pumped up about her newly vegan lifestyle, and is all Woot! GO VEGAN!!!!!!

New vegans IMO, are usually the preachiest...

It should pass in a few more months, or OP will go back to eating meat. Because, lets be honest, the majority of vegans are only vegan temporarily.

Did I mention I loathe PETA?

There's that, and the age group she falls in certainly helps. I find time after time that people in or around that age group learn one factoid and then think they are experts.

I've been thinking a bit more on this and mostly I'm curious about some vitamins that aren't readily available when eating vegan. Vit A, D and B12 specifically. They pretty much have to come from supplements, correct? I suppose it was hard to be a "healthy" vegan before vitamin supplements were produced commercially. Also, Vitamin A needs fat to be easily absorbed, doesn't it (maybe I'm mixed up here). Do the plant based oils do the job?

There have been some really interesting questions asked in the last couple of pages. But rather than answer them you appear to be just posting angry responses to this thread. If you want to help and support people you might start by actually answering some of them.

    Fortunately, there are supplements.
It is completely possible to be an omnivore and have a b12 vitamin deficiency. But people don't jump on omnivores about watching their b12 levels. I did have a deficiency before I became vegan, and my levels have been fine since my transition. I don't take a specific supplement, but it is supplemented in the foods I eat, like nutritional yeast, spirulina, breakfast cereals....etc.

I'm pretty sure that animal fat is not needed to aid in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins.

I didn't mean to imply that anyone was jumping on anybody else, but protein and b12 are the biggest arguments I hear when people argue against a vegan diet.

ETA: the majority of vegans I know are very conscious of their micronutrients and have read extensively on how not to become deficient. :)
