Strength and Weights

Efferding says what's up =P
Trust you to find the outlier!
I'm assuming he actively tries for both disciplines though, rather than just happened to train for one and fall into the other. Although there are always exceptions.
Just giving you a hard time. Most people don't do both, and the Rhino is a freak of nature. I do tend to think there's a higher relationship between strength and size than you acknowledge but that's just a question of degree. Beyond that I'm in agreement with you.0 -
Op
I started doing new rules of lifting for women and saw an 8" loss by the end of stage one, it's a great book for explaining the reason why us women should lift and a great beginner programme.
Yes, you do free weight squats and deadlifts from the get go, but not everyday - start light and work your way up if you are unsure. I cannot recommend free weight squats and deadlifts enough - not only did they change my body shape the also cured me of the lower back pain I have had for years.
Please ignore the noise on this thread from certain people. I can't find anyone suggesting you do weighted squats everyday. And for the love of god stay away from the smiths machine. Interestingly I never saw anyone using it for squats at the gym I went to.......
Read some of the weight programme specific threads and groups and get some good advice from people who have hit their goals and have the photos to prove it. I did and I've never been more pleased with my decision.
Good luck :flowerforyou:0 -
If you're scared of squats, don't project that onto other people. I started squatting a couple years ago and have squatted 600+ in competition. There's nothing to worry about if you are using good form and take it slow. That's why programs like Starting Strength are good- they emphasize progressive overload.
DIscouraging newbies from squatting is like discouraging new runners from running hills. You may have some good reasons, and there may be people who are happy never running hills, but who are you to tell them not to?
Squats are amazing. They're my second favorite exercise. They can be done in the smith machine if you're not looking for strength, though I would recommend supplementing smith machine squats with lunges or some other stabilizing movement.
Being scared of squats is just dumb and being scared of failure period is the reason so many people don't get what they want.0 -

I think it depends on definition of strong correlation, without cracking out Pearsons coefficient or similar, to me strong correlation would be something like hours worked and total pay, for someone who is on an hourly rate.
I think it also depends who we're talking about, for the average gym warrior, the correlation is much stronger than for the serious weightlifter who isn't a super heavyweight.
EDIT: You got me thinking about this more now, so going to look some stuff up, this is what I have seen so far - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1606609/0 -

I feel bad for the OP and hope she got some good answers out of all the crap. You know the whole "I have to prove someone on the internet wrong" thing? It just happened to me on this post but I'm out!0 -
I have recently just rejoined my local gym. I have my cardio program worked out and working smoothly however this is not the case with my strength program... as strength/weights arent my strong point i would like to know what kind of program i could start off with? any suggestions would be a huge help!
Form is important, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't do squats or deadlifts. Bet you can get an inexpensive training package, and get pointers, but even if you don't, there are so many videos online that show good form and describe in detail how to do these lifts.
Strong Lifts, Starting Strength, New Rules of Lifting for Women and Nia Shanks all are GREAT starting points and have detailed prorgrams that you can follow.0 -
Sorry for the necro bump, I dropped 8% bf, 15lbs while gaining 10" overall on my body in only 6 weeks while you guys were just talking trash. http://bodyspace.bodybuilding.com/photos/view-user-photo/29740261
I guess I don't know what I'm talking about, bah! I'm such a dummy! :eyes roll:0 -
Oh and since this is "Strength and Weights", in 6 weeks my bench went up by 30lbs, my squat by 80lbs and my deadlift by 90lbs. I don't have any real angst towards anybody and I only did this for myself but how can you say I don't know what I'm talking about. This is what boggles my mind. I'll delete this account pretty soon here anyways, there is absolutely nothing I can learn some of the people in this thread and I'm sure it's plagued most threads. There is a few guys with solid info though, including here. Peace.0

Ressurected an old dead post to get the last word in and then deactivates. This is by far the funniest thing I have witnessed on this site.0 -

Ignoring the lulz, I am still trying to work out how that even related to the OP.0 -
I would highly recommend dumbbell complex circuit training. it's a great cardiovascular and strength training regimen. Fast paced, gets the heart rate up there, so versatile and tears down the muscle. Good luck!0

that was hilarious reading through again.
good times0 -
Smith machines have their uses, particularly in the bodybuilding world....
Oh, they're good for shrugs, too. Since the movement is only a few inches, the unnatural bar path doesn't create too much impingement...and you don't have to pick the weight up off the ground at the beginning of every set.
Lower the bar all the way and use it for bar pushups (for us beginners that can't go all the way to the floor yet )0 -
Starter push ups, yes. I also still use the Smith Machine for inverted rows.0

This was an awesome thread!
highlights were when he didn't know what the big three were and then said he refuted poliquin good times0
